Areas of Maths• Number and Calculations• Shape and Space• Measure• Data Handling• Using and Applying including

InvestigationsEven though there are separate areas they are all

interlinked!

Page 4: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

4 Basic Steps• Concrete• Semi concrete• Semi abstract• Abstract

It’s all about children being able to use creativity to solve problems or challenges!

Page 5: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Number – Stage 1

• Counting to 10 forwards and backwards (from any number)

• Recognising numbers• Ordering numbers• Writing numbers• Then moving up to 20 (only when they

Number – Stage 2

• Working with numbers:• Adding and taking away

(Using objects, then pictures, then symbols and numbers, and then numbers on their own)

Includes number bonds to 10 and then 20

• Doubling• Halving – objects and then numbers• Adding coins together (or finding a given

amount)• Other skills: odds and evens, recording work, counting

in 2s, 5s and 10s, place value

Page 7: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Number – Stage 3• Using numbers in other ways:

• Using halves and quarters• Grouping objects in 2s, 5s and 10s to

help count• Recall multiplication of 2, 3, 5, 10• Add and subtract 2 digit numbers in

their heads• Money – working with decimals e.g. £3.06 is the same as 306p

Shape – Stage 1• Finding 2D shapes (different

orientation!) • Naming 2D shapes• Beginning to find 3D shapes Remember the 4

steps!

Page 9: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Shape – Stage 2• Talking about properties of 2D

shapes• Naming 3D shapes • Talking about properties of 3D

shapes

Page 10: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Shape – Stage 3• Naming 2D and 3D shapes• Talk about the properties confidently• Naming 3D shapes from a net

Measuring – Stage 1• Non standard – things like hands, paper clips, pegs, cups• Counting how many of each• Beginning to put 2 or 3 objects into an order• Time – days of the week

Page 12: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Measuring – Stage 2• Can put 3 objects into an order (non

standard)• Starting to use standard units: kg, m and l• Starts to see things that are more or less

than each of these – only using these words!

• Starting to put this information into writing

• Time – o’clock and half past

Page 13: T he Oaktree School Maths Workshop

Measuring – Stage 3• Uses standard units: kg, l and m• Knows which tool to use• Uses cm• Understanding 1000g is 1kg and

1000ml is 1l • Half of 1000g is 500g• Time – reads 12 hr clock; adding time

together
