"SIRIUS": Winner of More Than 700 Races
In the 35 years of her life the 10-meter racing sloop "Sirius" has racked up what may be the world's greatest winning record - winning over 700 recorded races.
Now owned by Arthur Wald of Del Hey YC at Marina del Hey she has, during the three years he has owned her, won 54 of her 57 races. For her previous owner, the late Howard Ahmanson, she won 55 of 60 races en-

tered. And in the Little America's Cup Series she won five of her six races.
The last built of the famed IO-meter boats, "Sirius" was constructed in 1933 by Anker and Jensen of Norway. She was commissioned by the New York YC, which at that time frankly wanted a boat capable of besting all the other IO-meters. She is 58' long, 10' 2" wide, draws 8' 2", has a masthead of 80', dis-

places 42,000 lbs. , and has a lead keel weighing 22,000 lbs.
As working sails, she carries a main of 1,000 sq. ft. , a genoa of 500 sq. ft. , and a spinnakC'r of 1,600 sq. ft. With all three of these sails in use, she carries more than 3,000 sq. ft. of sail. Actually, she has over 45 sets of sheets, and 30 individually bagged sails, for use as racing conditions warrant. She also carries 23 winches, ranging in size from #5's to #35's ( a #35 winch being about the size of an office wastebasket). And the 27 handles for her winches - some with double handles - represent an estimated dollar value of more than $4,000 in handles alone.
Still kept in top racing condition, her interior was redesigned and constructed for Mr. and Mrs. Wald in 1967 by shipwright Will Kelsey of Marina del Rey ( shown at right in new gal ley area). During the past two years, Kelsey - whose shipwright company also handles the maintenance on this one boat - has additionally equipped "Sirius" for long range luxury cruising, wi th stainless steel tanks, Diesel power, and modern water and refrigeration systems.

\JI AMONG ff THE CLUBS
International 14s Compete At Marina del Rey
Hosting the International 14 West Coast Regatta at Marina del Rey last July 15, 16, and 17 was South Coast Corinthian YC.
Winner of the three day, five-race event- which drew 25 entries from throughout the nation - was Roger Welsh of Voyager YC at Newport Beach. Ken Eldfed, the hosting YC's entry in the event, finished sixth.
Unique as a racing class, the International 14 is not limited as to shape of hull; but only in overall dimensions, sail area, and height of mast. As a consequence, among the more than 900 boats registered in this class, the design theories of more than 14 naval architects are currently being proven ( or disproven ) - a method expected to ultimately "improve the breed," unlike the majority of small boat classes of frozen total design.
Marlin Club Soon To Have Clubhouse
The Del Rey Marlin Club will have its own clubhouse on Panay Way when it takes over the facilities soon to b e vacated by Pacific Mariners YC.
Founded two years ago at Marina del Rey, the Del Rey Marlin Club is made up of sport fi shing enthusiasts with and without boats, and offers a continuing program of educational and game fishing events for its members and their families.
Among the club's board of directors and officers are: Harvey Small, Commodore; Alan Epstein, Secretary; John Dawson, Treasurer; Tiny Dees, Vice Commodore; John Story, Intra-Club Activities; Kent Duffin, Tournaments; Allen Kaufman, Historian; Dick Hillman, Sergeant at Arms; Bob Flamer, DDS, Awards; Stuart Fried, Entertainment; and Fred Fox, Ways and Means.
Further details about the group, for those interested in j0ining it or in receiving its monthly newsletter, may be had by contacting John Dawson at 395-1154.
Ericson 26 Group Seeks Members
The Ericson 26 National Association, now one year old at Marina del Rey, offers a continuing program of activities designed to interest cruising as well as racing owners of this class.
Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at Windjammers YC, and all interested Ericson 26 owners are invited to attend. Further details about the association and its coming activities may be had from Secretary Mel Anderson, 14509 Firmona Ave., Lawndale, Calif. 90260.
Albacore Tournament The Second Annual Ma1ina del Rey
Albacore Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11.
Participating in the interclub event will be the California YC Anglers, the D el Rey Marlin Club, the Del Rey YC Anglers, and the Los Angeles Rod and Reel Club.
Trophies will be awarded to individuals, boats, and the club scoring highest in albacore and tuna caught during the tournament. Judges will be Roger Bentley ( CYC Anglers ), Harold Dees (Del Rey Marlin Club ), Joe Lewis ( Del Rey YC Anglers) , and Bill Pearlman ( L.A. Rod and Reel Club).

--------~,. H arbormaster, LEO PORTER-
In an effort to provide safe and efficient traffic control on the waters of Marina del Rey, the Harbor Patrol is stepping up boating traffic law enforcement to assure compliance with nautical Rules of the Road and applicable ordinances.
The Harbor Patrol, of course, recognizes that a responsive community climate developed by public understanding and support is necessary to provide the optimum in safe and efficient traffic control. However, it should be remembered that the Rules of the Road apply to all vessels on navigable waters, irrespective of size or type. Listed for your guidance are traffic control requirements that the Patrol expects you to observe:
1. Motorboats are to keep to the righ t of mid-channel buoys • or markers. Sailboats, when under sail, are also requested to do the same. The prevailing winds (westerlies) at Marina del Rey make it possible to comply the majority of the time, particularly in the main channel and when inbound in the entrance channel. An exception may be when outbound in the entrance channel, but do not tack within 150 feet of rock slope; tack only in 500 feet, center portion of entrance channel. Note: The entrance channel is that
portion of the channel seaward of a line drawn across the channel at the Coast Guard Pier.
2. Auxiliary vessels to use their motor power, especially when departing the harbor.

3. All vessels enter by the south entrance, depart by the north entrance.
4. Whenever circumstances permit, vessels should a void crossing ahead of another.
5. The Rules of the Road give a sailing vessel the right of way over a motorboat except when the sailing vessel is the overtaking vessel. The operators of either type vessel must keep in mind the dangers in navigation, in collision, etc., and if necessary depart from the Rules of the Road to avoid immediate danger. In short, a sailing vessel cannot blindly or blandly rest on her privilege and sail into a collision.
6. It is imperative for the boat operator to realize and understand that the Rules of the Road must be obeyed. Smee they are mandatory and not optional, a departure can only be justified in an emergency - to avoid immediate danger. ( See Article 27, Inland Rules 33 U.S.C. 154.) When the Rules of the Road are properly applied, it should be impossible for collisions to happen; that they do indicates either unfamiliarity with the rules, negligence, or both.

BAY CURRENTS-11. New, " Secret" Information
During other research, Boatin' discovered that the Los Angeles City Bureau of Sanitation, preparing for the construction of the disposal plant, had done extensive investigating over many square miles centering off Hyperion for several years, using dyes and aerial observation, Ekman current meters, current crosses and visual and radar observation. The information served the purposes intended and was never released to the public. Boatin' obtained permission to inspect the reports, buried for over 10 years . These are un-

doubtedly the best existing data on Bay currents.
They produce a clear picture of confused conditions. Typically, over a three-hour period, the direction of surface current at a given point varies over a 58° range - in 12 hours, over a 240° range ( a reverse tidal current would only be a 180° shift). Prevailing current direction at one location on a given day sometimes varies 180° from that at another location a mile and a quarter away.
However, amongst the confusion, some tendencies did show. During summer months -April through October - Bay currents are more likely to be in a northerly or easterly direction. During winter months - December, January, February - they are equally or more likely to set in a southerly direction.
There also appear to be seconda1y eddies - caused by the shelf which extends seaward below del Rey. Onshore currents are deflected - some going north, reinforcing the Palos Verdes eddy-some south, opposing _it.
So, in the summer, over most of the de! Rey course, odds favor northerly or easterly currents, modified by tidal currents and winds. In the southern part of the course and in winter months, currents might well be southerly. And, of course, they might not, too.
If you feel a little uncertain, just be glad you aren't a drop of water coming down around Santa Rosa Island. It truly doesn't know where it's going to go.
