KARANAKODAM THODU Preliminary Study Report INTRODUCTION MINOR IRRIGATION | ERNAKULAM The Karanakodam thodu passes through Karanakodam ,Palathuruthu , Rail Nagar and Elamkulam . The total length of the Karanakodam thodu is 4.77Km with starting width of 4m near at JLN Stadium,Kaloor. The average width of thodu is 8.5m and the whole stretch is protected with DR masonry. The width variation were noted at various stretches with Apartment and building plot compound walls are constructed abutting the thodu. Cross structures not having sufficient clearance for flow of water have been noticed. Many drains are emptying into this thodu. Karanamkodam thodu is a part of Chilavannoor canal and it starts from western side of JLN Metro station traversing towards South and ends atElamkulam, where the water drains in to Chilavannoor kayal. The parent Chilavannoor Canal originate from Chilavannoor kayal, and terminates at Chittoor Puzha , near Amritha Institute of Medical Science(AIMS) Edappally . Earlier people depended this thodu to reach Edappally from Thripunithura and was used for the transportation of goods also. The thodu was originally traversing through the stadium premises and was shifted to the boundary of the stadium during its construction. Now this thodu is seenseparated into two at the Banerjee road near JLN Metro Station. The thodu towards north is Changadam poku thodu and towards south isKaranakodam thodu. PRESENT SCENARIO

INTRODUCTION

MINOR IRRIGATION | ERNAKULAM

The Karanakodam thodu passes through Karanakodam,Palathuruthu , Rail Nagar and Elamkulam . The totallength of the Karanakodam thodu is 4.77Km withstarting width of 4m near at JLN Stadium,Kaloor. Theaverage width of thodu is 8.5m and the whole stretch isprotected with DR masonry. The width variationwere noted at various stretches with Apartment andbuilding plot compound walls are constructed abuttingthe thodu. Cross structures not having sufficientclearance for flow of water have been noticed. Manydrains are emptying into this thodu.

Karanamkodam thodu is a part ofChilavannoor canal and it starts fromwestern side of JLN Metro stationtraversing towards South and endsatElamkulam, where the water drains in toChilavannoor kayal. The parentChilavannoor Canal originate fromChilavannoor kayal, and terminates atChittoor Puzha , near Amritha Institute ofMedical Science(AIMS) Edappally . Earlierpeople depended this thodu to reachEdappally from Thripunithura and was usedfor the transportation of goods also. Thethodu was originally traversing through thestadium premises and was shifted to theboundary of the stadium during itsconstruction. Now this thodu isseenseparated into two at the Banerjeeroad near JLN Metro Station. The thodutowards north is Changadam poku thoduand towards south isKaranakodam thodu.

PRESENT SCENARIO

NEAR JLN METROSTATION AT CH 0 M

At the starting of the JLN metrostation from where theKaranakodam – thodu started, it isnoticed that the2 pipes from theother side of the Banerjee road areconnected to this thodu . Also utilityservice pipelines and cables areimproperly laid across it.The portionfrom JLN Metro station toKarnakodam stretch runs abuttingto the JLN Stadium compoundboundary after which it runsparallel to the stadium link road. The bridges and pipelinesconstructed without adequatevertical clearance across the thoducause obstruction to the smoothflow of water through the thodu. The Adimury thodu is joining to this near the Sreekrishna cateringbuilding at Stadium link road andsteel foot over bridge here needs tobe replaced as it is devoid of anyvertical clearance. The KWA ,KSEBand BSNL pipelines acrosstheculverts near Kent Apartmentand Skyline apartments arecrossing the thodu withoutsufficient clearance .

The thodu crosses the ThammanamPulleppady road at Ch 2039m andflows towards Railway Marshallingyard. A connection thodu toKaranakodam is seen completelyblocked at the downstream of thisbridge.

The culverts in the V.V.Road (ch. 468m)and St.Sebastian Road(ch. 4155m) havevery low vertical clearance and anarrower water way and need to bereconstructed .The area has beensubjected to flooding during heavy rains. There is an iron bridge at Ch 4408m at thedownstream of Railnagar area .Wasteaccumulation and presence of waterweeds have been noticed here whichcauses hindrances to the uninterruptedflow of water. The thodu crosses theSubhash Chandra Bose road (ch. 4650)and joins Chilavannoor Kayal.Thewaterway of this bridge is narrower andalso pillars of the KWA Pipeline in thisbridge coupled with the presence of waterweeds are obstructing the flow and thebridge has to be reconstructed .

The thodu has been included in the Operation Break Through 2020 andwas desilted. Now during the field visit, it has been noticed that Cochincorporation is carrying out cleaning in this thodu.

AT CH :2039 M

Near the railway marshalling yard, the thodu has been deviated alongthe boundary of the yard by theRailways .In this course along theRail nagar area, a railway bridgeis crossing the thodu and at thedownstream of the Railwaycrossing ,Puncha thodu is startingat Ch 3116m. There are twoculverts viz Panorama residencyculvert and Rail nagar No.1 culvertin this area. The thoduregains theoriginal course near Rail nagarmain bridge(ch. 3884) joining thethodu from Marshalling yard andproceeds southward to Chettichiraand finally drains to ChilavannoorKayal. Also at Ch 3986 m, at thesouth end of MarshallingYard,Puthen palam thodu startsfrom this and joins ChilavannoorKayal.

REMEDIAL MEASURES

a. Culvert at Adimuri thodu Junctionb. Culvert at V.V.Road c. Culvert at St.Sebastian Roadd. Bridge at Subhash Chandra bose Road.

A. LONG TERM MEASURES - STRUCTURES TO BERECONSTRUCTED.

B. SHORT TERM MEASURES

1.Starting point -Near Metro Station2.Culvert near Kent Apartment.3.Culvert near Sky line imperial apartment4.Culvert near Panorama Residency 5.Culvert at V.V.Road .6.Culvert at St. Sebastian road 7. Subhash Chandra Bose Road crossing.

A. Two trees which obstruct the smooth flow are to be cut,one near culvert at Ch 515m(NSSKarayogam Junction) ,another near Adimuri thodu junction at Ch 995m.Apart from this wastedeposit and water weeds beneath Iron bridge at Ch.4408 has to be removed. Also the treesnear the mouth of the Kayal have to be pruned for ensuring free flow of water.B. Service Lines to be replaced KWA Pipe lines and cables of KSEB and BSNL -

The periodical desilting of thodu and its connections ,providing cross structures with adequatehorizontal waterway and vertical clearance ,realignment of service lines with sufficient head room willhelp to ensure the uninterrupted flow through the thodu.
