Exercise, meditation, and prayer are all excellent habits to help control stress toxins that build up in our bodies.

Eat HealthyEating a well-balanced diet is important for good hair health. The body needs to get nutrients from foods and supplements. Since hair is a nonessential tissue, it only gets what is left over from other vital organs. Therefore it is essential to eat well in order to provide enough nutrition for your hair. Dieting is a major stressor on nonessential

tissues like hair. Sudden and dramatic weight loss can be harmful to hair as well. Slow, controlled weight loss is recommended.

Use Quality Vitamins and Minerals

There are a number of vitamins and minerals that are essential for overall hair health, especially since many of today’s foods don’t contain the nutrients and minerals they once contained. The five essential vitamins for optimal hair health are biotin, vitamin A, vitamin E, pantothenic acid, and inositol.

Tight ponytails, braids, dreadlocks, and hair extensions can contribute to hair loss by causing scarring under the skin where hair grows. This is a type of “traction alopecia” and over time can lead to permanent hair loss.

Flat irons and curling irons also damage the cuticle and organic part of the hair. Avoid high heat settings on all devices.

Overcoloring or overprocessing can stress and damage hair. To lengthen the time between treatments, avoid hair styling products that contain alcohol. These products strip hair dyes and increase fading. Use a chlorine filter on your shower to minimize the damage to colored and treated hair.

Use Quality BrushesFor optimal hair health, avoid combs and brushes with sharp bristles. Anything that might scratch the skinshould be avoided. Use brushes that have bulbs on the bristles and make sure bristles are placed far apart from each other.

So why is waiting to do something a bad idea?One Word: Progression

If you have pattern baldness, it is extremely important to understand that the progression of hair loss is MORE HAIR LOSS — unless you proactively do something to slow it down or stop it. Although hair loss is considered to be predominantly a middle-aged male problem, hair loss can happen at any age and it happens to women too. In fact, women are nearly as likely to experience hair loss as men. According to the American Hair Loss Association, women make up forty percent (40%) of American hair loss sufferers.

Most women notice the first signs of thinning in their 50s or 60s, but there are many cases where it occurs in younger women as well. Women experience mainly two types of hair loss:

Diffusehairloss (thinning all over), which can only be treated with nonsurgical solutions initially. Surgical solutions may be considered later after diffuse hair loss is stabilized.

Female pattern hair loss (thinning on the top of the head and crown only), which can be treated with both surgical and nonsurgical solutions.

Female Pattern Hair LossFemale pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in women, and its effects are noticed as the hair becomes thinner, weaker, more fragile, and shorter. This type of hair loss can often be linked to genetics, just as it is in males who have male pattern baldness. The hair follicles are sensitive to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which causes them to miniaturize and fall out.

Menopause is known to cause hormonal changes, which are responsible for a multitude of unwanted effects on the body, one of which is hair loss.

When a woman goes through menopause, estrogen levels decrease and testosterone increases, creating a hormone imbalance. As a result, hair tends to grow thinner and finer than before. Once nongenetic causes of hair loss such as chemicals, medicines, disease, or thyroid issues are eliminated, the possibility

of genetic hair loss can be addressed. Ask questions such as, does anyone in my immediate family have pattern baldness (brothers, sisters, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather)?

Darren Andrews, Consultant for PAI Medical Indianapolis, says, “Patients often ask, how will I look right after my procedure? One of the best things about a hair transplant procedure is you have little downtime. Typically, patients will have some small scabs about the size of a large strawberry seed or small freckle as well as a little bit of redness for the first few days. Then the redness begins to diminish to a light pink color and fades away over a few days to a week or so. Skin type has a lot to do with it.
