The Church of the Epiphany has an abundance of blessings; the most important of which is its people. For decades their support has made this parish a place for the community to gather every week to worship, a place to serve our neighbors, a place to help people from around the globe, a place to celebrate the birth of a child in baptism, to mark their growth into adulthood with confirmation, a place to bless lifelong commitments in marriage, and a place to mourn the passing of a loved one.

Because of the devotion of the people of this parish; freely giv-ing their time, sharing in their talents, and generously contributing their treasure, The Church of the Epiphany has been a place to share all of life’s moments with God and with one another.

To help ensure that Epiphany can continue playing an essential role in our lives, and the lives of future members for many more dec-ades to come, the vestry and I have voted to create a Legacy Fund. On the following page, you will find the guidelines and parameters for the Legacy Fund. We are able to start this new project in a strong position because of the generous bequest left by June and Edward Rendall.

The Legacy Fund will allow us to do several things. It will help us build God’s Kingdom today, strengthen the church for the future, and honor those who have come before us and given so much to the life of this church. A parish is a collection of faithful people, living in response to God’s call and love. Our prayers, our songs, our laughter, and our tears make this parish what it is. Epiphany gives a home for this shared life of faith. Its roof and walls shelters that faith, and helps it to grow and flourish. Its doors are open to all; inviting in those who are search-ing to know Jesus Christ. The Legacy Fund will strengthen all that we do together.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be presenting more information about the fund. If you have any questions or want to know more about it, please let me know. My door is always open.

The Legacy Fund of The Church of the Epiphany

The purpose of The Legacy Fund is to support the mission, ministry, budget, building, and grounds, of The Church of the Epiphany.

1.) The Legacy Fund will be invested with the Trustees of the Fund.

2.) Growth of The Legacy Fund is intended to come primarily from, but not limited to: gifts, bequests, pledges, and investment income.

3.) Spending from The Legacy fund is under the control of the Rector and Vestry.

4.) Investment income from The Legacy Fund may be spent by vote of the Rector and Vestry. Income will be reinvested into the principal unless expended by vote of the Rector and Vestry.

5.) Up to 4% of The Legacy Fund principal may be invaded within a fiscal year by vote of the Rector and Vestry.

6.) When contributions to The Legacy Fund are received, they will be acknowledged with a letter of thanks, and other appropriate gestures, if possible.

A Word from the Warden: March already? Time really does fly when you are having to say “see you soon” to someone you hold near and dear. While Harrison’s departure came as a shocking surprise to me, I am so very excited for him and really believe this will be quite a spiritual adventure for him—I have a sweet picture of him riding his bike all over campus with “Deacon Harrison” on his back! He is gonna be great!

Thank you all for making his send-off such a special day—this parish sure knows how to throw a party.

Lent Brings Focus to our Spiritual Journey

Everyone we know is on a spiritual journey. The spiritual journey has no destination as we are ac-customed to thinking of a goal or end game. The destination is to become as close to Jesus Christ as we can.

The spiritual journey, then, is a process of specific acts that focus our attention on our Lord when so much distracts us from Him. Lent is intended to be the time to examine our sur-roundings at this point in our journey, open ourselves to an understanding of how close to and how far away from our Lord we are, and decide what steps to take to be nearer to Jesus. It’s a daunting task, but the good news is none of us has to do it alone. We live and move and have our being, as it were, in community – meaning that the Church offers tools and guidance for our spiritual benefit.

Episcopalians have a particularly rich resource for spiritual direction: the Book of Common Prayer. I recommend that anyone interested in focusing on his/her spiritual life start with regular daily observance of the Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families found on pages 137-140 in the BCP. If you don’t have time to do all four, then choose any number of them that fit your schedule and contribute to your consistency of effort. If you have the time, by all means pray the four daily offices of Morning Prayer, Noonday, Evening Prayer and Compline. In either case, incorporating a rhythm of habitual daily prayer into your schedule is essential to the goal of drawing nearer to Christ.

For it is the deep wisdom of the experience of the Church through 2000 years that we find in the liturgical expression of the prayers I cited above. The prayers are the result of millions of Christians attempting to find their way to God, to give God due praise and to accept our Lord’s prom-ise that what is asked will be granted. Much of what we want from God is already in our lives if we were not distracted from the sound and sight of it by the noise and confusion we ordinarily inhabit. Take this first step, then, in this new stage of your spiritual journey by developing the rhythm of daily prayer.

A Tip of the Hat to the

Men’s Group, Chapter 11!

A big thank you to Chapter 11 and their helpers for the wonderful time everyone had at the Big Night Out Celebration! There was good food, great music and wonderful entertainment! Thanks again Chap-ter 11 for your hard work getting everything together! A great time was had by all!

Chapter 4 will meet on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 PM in the parlor.

Maundy Thursday Reflections Thanks to Father Andrew, the Worship Committee and the Altar Guild, we celebrated Maundy Thursday,

also known as Holy Thursday during Passion Week, with a much different service compared to past years at

the Church of the Epiphany. In addition to our service and special communion to celebrate Jesus’ last sup-

per with his disciples, Father Andrew and Deacon Harrison performed a foot washing ceremony to com-

memorate Jesus’ washing the feet of his disciples. Watching the ceremony, I wondered what was going

through Jesus’ mind as he cared for his disciples. It was feelings of love from Jesus to those he touched that

made me realize the true meaning of this ceremony. The service was very powerful with an impressive mes-

sage to everyone. I urge everyone to consider attending our next Maundy Thursday service. Until now, I

have never witnessed nor participated in a Maundy Thursday service at Epiphany that included this ceremo-

ny. This service is simply telling us as Jesus told his disciples, let’s go forth to love and serve one another!

Lucy Whitlock & family would like to thank the parish for all the prayers, calls, cards and sympathy during her mother’s illness and after her passing. We really appreci-ate all the concern and kind words during this very difficult time. All I can say is —Epiphany you are the best! God be with you all.

The Stone Family would like to thank everyone for the cards, calls and expressions of sympathy during the passing of John’s father on February 11th. Our Epiphany family always goes above and beyond and we are deeply moved by all you have done.

Wayne Whitlock would like to thank the members of the congregation for all their prayers, calls, cards and concern during his recent stay in the hospital. He is recu-perating at home and doing much better. Thanks again for the prayers.

Ray Hampton would like to thank you for the kind Valentines Day Card.

Sympathy

The prayers & sympathy of the congregation are extended to Lucy Whitlock and family on the death of her mother, Norma Hanko, who died on Saturday, February 3rd. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 7th in Wisconsin.

The Prayers & Sympathy of the congregation are extended to John Stone and family on the death of his father, John Stone IV, who died on Sunday, February 11th. A funeral service was held here on Saturday, February 24th at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception.

The prayers & sympathy of the congregation are extended to family and friends of Fred Bales who died on Wednesday, February 14th. A graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Satur-day, February 24th at 3:00 PM.

May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
