PASTOR’S LETTER Passing over to Heavenly Reali!es… In the year 304, the Roman Emperor Diocle!an decreed the death penalty for Chris!ans who were found possessing copies of the Sacred Scriptures, gathering on Sundays to celebrate the Eucharist, or building places in which to hold their
assemblies. In Abitene, a small village in what is now the na!on of Tunisia in North Africa, 49 Chris!ans were taken by surprise one Sunday while they were celebra!ng the Eucharist in the house of Octavius Felix, in defiance of the emperor’s prohibi!ons. They were arrested and taken to the city of Carthage to be ques!oned by the Proconsul Anulinus.
When he asked them why they had disobeyed the Emperor’s orders, one of the Chris!ans, named Emeritus, replied: “Sine dominico non possimus.” These La!n words translate literally into English as: “Without Sunday we cannot.” In La!n sentences, the verb “to be” is o$en implied rather than spoken or wri%en. With that in mind, I think Pope Benedict XVI’s interpreta!on of the fuller meaning of the words of Emeritus make sense: “We cannot live without joining together on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist. We would lack the strength to face our daily problems and not to succumb.” A$er terrible tortures, these 49 Chris!ans were martyred, thus confirming their faith with the shedding of their blood. They died but were victorious.
Why did these martyrs value the Eucharist so highly that they were willing to be killed rather than stop celebra!ng it, and to witness to its importance by their blood? Some answers appear in the following Preface of the Mass of Corpus Chris!…
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salva!on, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For at the Last Supper with his Apostles, establishing for the ages to come the saving memorial of the Cross, he offered himself to you as the unblemished Lamb, the acceptable gi# of perfect praise. Nourishing your faithful by this sacred mystery, you make them holy, so that the human race, bounded by one world, may be enlightened by one faith, and united by one bond of charity. And so, we approach the table of this wondrous Sacrament, so that, bathed in the sweetness of your grace, we may pass over to the heavenly reali!es here foreshadowed. Therefore, all creatures of heaven and earth sing a new song in adora!on, as we, with all the host of Angels, cry out, and without end acclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts…
The Eucharist is the saving memorial of the Cross. Through it, the salva!on Christ won on the cross is made present here and now to raise souls from purgatory and earth up to heaven.
The Eucharist is the unblemished Lamb. At the first Passover in Egypt, the people of Israel put the blood of a lamb on the doorposts of their homes to save them from the angel of death. In the new Covenant, the Blood of Christ on the lips of Chris!ans saves them from eternal death.
The Eucharist is the gi! of perfect praise. Does your heart want to cry out in praise to God for who he is and for everything he has created, does and gives? Par!cipa!ng in the Eucharist is the most perfect form of praise of God possible here on earth.
The Eucharist nourishes the faithful. Just as physical food provides what our bodies need and hunger for, the Body and Blood of Christ gives us what our souls need and long for.
The Eucharist makes Chris"an believers holy. It is medicine for the sickness of our soul and makes us like Jesus Christ by uni!ng us more closely with him.
The Eucharist unites us in faith and charity, countering the rela!vism, selfishness and divisions of this world that are fostered by the devil.
The Eucharist bathes us in the sweetness of God’s grace. It enables us to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8) and be “a fragrance from life to life” for those who are being saved (2 Corinthians 2:15-16).
The Eucharist enables us to pass over to the heavenly reali"es foreshadowed in it. Our Sunday worship on earth mirrors the unceasing worship of the saints and angels in heaven around the throne of God, and the Body and Blood of Christ gives us the eternal life of God enjoyed by the residents of paradise.
Is it any wonder that those Chris!ans of Abitene in the fourth century would rather die than abandon the Sunday Eucharist? May we share their understanding and zeal.
Yours in the Eucharist, Father Rudolph

Speaking specifically of the sin of pride St. Cyril of Alexandria stated: "If the power of pride is swelling up in you, turn to the Eucharist; and that Bread, Which is your God humbling and disguising Himself, will teach you humility." ~St. Cyril of Alexandria (Feast Day: June 27th)

This weekend, June 22-23, 2019, Deacon Rory Desmond of the Christopher Missions founda!on will be visi!ng St. Raphael’s Church to make a mission appeal for the Church’s missionary work in India. Deacon Rory will be speaking to us about The Diocese of Miao which is in North East India. Miao is a new missionary Church in a region bordering Tibet, China and Myanmar (Burma). The Catholic Faith has only been in this area for the last forty years and for the first fi$een years of its existence the Church was underground and persecuted. This region of the Himalayas is extremely isolated and underdeveloped. The people here are a Mongolian Tribal people who are embracing the Catholic Faith eagerly and in growing numbers. Most of the popula!on lives in sca%ered isolated villages. The only reliable schools, clinics and social services are those provided by the Catholic Church. The region has li%le or no infrastructure or development and the Church is the only provider of reliable educa!on and health services as well as public health projects such as clean drinking water wells. Un!l the Church provided schools and teachers none of the tribal people had any access to educa!on. SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT LIETBERTUS Lietbertus (also known as Libert or Liébert) was born in Brabant, now part of Belgium and the Netherlands. He was educated by his uncle, Gerard I de Florines, who was the bishop of Cambrai in France, and was selected to succeed him a$er he died. But before he could take office, the owner of a local castle, named John of Arras, moved his family into the bishop’s palace, chased some of the local clergy away and emp!ed the diocesan treasury. Lietbertus had to wait a while un!l Baldwin I, Count of Flanders, was able to drive John away.
As bishop, Lietbertus was energe!c in his care for the flock God had entrusted to him. He was kind toward everyone, gave to the poor everything he could spare and, as one monk wrote, acted “with holy boldness and evangelical liberty towards the great and mighty of this world.”
In the year 1054, Lietbertus set out on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with about three thousand other people. It was a disaster. Along the way they encountered civil wars, armed bandits, famine, disease and shipwreck. By the !me they got to what is now Turkey, less than a thousand of the pilgrims were s!ll alive. Then they found out that the Muslims had closed access to the Holy Sepulcher (the tomb of Christ) in Jerusalem to Chris!ans and that it was dangerous for them to con!nue any further. Many of the pilgrims turned back, but Lietbertus and some of his companions were resolved to con!nue on. They took a ship, but contrary winds drove it to Cyprus and the ship’s captain insisted on sailing back to Turkey for fear of pirates and hos!le Muslims. The pilgrims never saw the Holy Land and had to go home.
A$er his return to Cambrai, Bishop Lietbertus built a monastery and church, which he named the Holy Sepulcher. He o$en went there barefoot at night to pray for his people. He devoted himself to their well-being in other ways too. For example, he excommunicated a tyrannical ruler named Hugh because of his evil conduct. Hugh consequently had Lietbertus imprisoned in a castle. Lietbertus was rescued by Arnulf, Count of Flanders, and soon a$er that Hugh was driven out of Cambrai, to the great relief of its ci!zens.
Lietbertus was bishop for twenty years. As he was dying, Cambrai was about to be a%acked by raiders who threatened to destroy it by fire and the sword. Lietbertus had himself carried on a stretcher into the enemy’s camp and by his eloquence and threats of damna!on succeeded in convincing them to withdraw without doing any harm. Saint Lietbertus, pray for us!
