sometimes for the practice, so long as you makeyour partner aware that you are not great at thedeuce side, but would like to practice it if that'sokay with them. Most players (unless you are playingfor money) are fine with this arrangement, especiallyat the club level. A good player placement strategyleads to happy doubles!

Doubles, the version of tennis most commonlyplayed at the club level has a few basic

strategy components that are decided before thematch even starts. The main one is which side of thecourt (deuce or ad) the players on the same teamwill play on when the opposition serves. Many timesthis decision is last minute, with little or no thoughtgiven as the players say, "Well, I don't care, I'll playeither," followed by the other player repeating thosewords, then someone shrugging and taking thedeuce side.

Basic rule: the stronger, more consistentbackhand goes on the ad side and the strongermore consistent forehand on the deuce side. If oneplayer is superior in both experience and skill, thentypically, that player takes the ad side because themajority of game points (40-0, 40-30, & ad) occur onthe ad side. Only one (40-15) game point occurs onthe deuce side, so there's less pressure on the deuceside for the weaker player. The player on the ad sideneeds to show consistence on the return of serve sothat they make the opponents earn all game pointswith quality shots. Clear the net and keep the returncross-court.

The exception to these basic strategy rules iswhen a player is dead-set on playing one side. Let

them play that side. It willkeep your partner

happy. Happypartners play

better. Ifpossible, beflexibleaboutwhich sideyou play,as this willmake iteasy for

you to playwith different

partnersthroughout your

tennis life. Also, Irecommend playing

the side you like less

T he MCC talk of December 2017 – NYE at theMCC. I came to the cocktail hour in my finest

We sipped champagne, moved from high-top table to high-top table, with soft, live, guitarmusic making everything so dreamlike. The wait staffbrought around the Chef’s newest creations – MCChors d'oeuvres – mouthwatering, perfectly cookedtiny Lamb Chops with Mint Sauce; Crostini TunaTartare – oh, I had it with a sip of Champagne, CajunChicken Tostaditas – the little darlings went so wellwith the beer the man next to me was sipping on;and, last but not least – Blini With Caviar and Crèmefresh, and another sip of champagne. Our wait staffsubtlety asked – “May I take that drink from you andbring you another?” Then the doors opened to theGalaxy Room. Blue lit Ice Sculptures dominated theWest Wall – Two Huge Ice Bowls filled with giganticshrimp. Between each bowl and the CenterSculpture were fresh ice cold crab claws – youpulled on jaw and held the other and you had alollipop of fresh lobster on a little stick to nibble. Not to be outdone, the East Wall was filled witha table of fresh sushi next to a Hot Station that servedcooked to order Crab Cakes, and Giant Scallops, plusRisotto. I wanted a balanced grazing so I had the babycarrots and freshly steamed asparagus that were tothat perfect place where they were crisp andbeautifully seasoned.
