When Charlotte, Ryan and I decided that theNeil DeGrasse Tyson declaration ‘We are,each of us, a little universe’ would guide this

year’s magazine, we hadn’t heard of Covid19. Wedidn’t know that life as we knew it would be paused,Pompeii-like, frozen in time; that they would end theirschool careers at home; that I would spend hoursteaching from my dining room table; that we would allbe exhausted looking at our own reflections in videocalls. DeGrasse Tyson observes the inter-connectedness of things; Fergal Keane talks about the

way we are all connected by ‘long lines of blood andfamily’; Joni Mitchell sings ‘We are stardust’. Theseinside covers, front and back, I hope remind us of allthis; that even as we are apart – and as I write, we stillare – we are a part of something so much bigger.Thanks to Ryan, Charlotte, Charlotte B whoparachuted in to help us out, Mrs Ritchie and everyonewho contributed when it was the last thing they hadtime to do. We miss you; we can’t wait to see you inAugust.

This year has proven tobe one of the mostchallenging ever in theHutchesons’ universe.The unprecedentedmove to onlineteaching, due to COVID-19, left us all looking fordirection, in thisuncharted territory –this final frontier.

But we persevered, andthe entire Hutchesons’family exemplified one of our core values: resilience.

Even though this change has brought new obstacles toovercome, the sheer determination and grit displayedby everyone has developed our sense of community,and our drive to support one another in thesechallenging times has helped us through. Thoughcommunicating from a distance is tough, pupils andstaff have embraced this new learning experience withtenacity and diligence via Zoom, Firefly and MicrosoftTeams. We have refused to accept distance, and sentour messages out into the universe, confident theywould be answered. And they were.

Though the challenges we may face in the future areunnerving and daunting, if tackled with this samepositivity and boldness, we will continue to thrive andquench our thirst for knowledge and success. Maybethis is a chance to try different things and discover whowe are really meant to be? And anyway, surely theseare the things that allow us to grow and fill our littleuniverses? Perhaps by the time our school experienceis complete we will wonder why we were ever worriedin the first place.

Although my Hutchesons’ journey has come to an end,I look forward to experiencing more little universes ofmy own in the future. Leaving school is agonizing yet Iam thankful for everything school has taught me, thefriends I have made and the jokes we have shared. Ihope everyone is able to look back fondly at school andtakes every chance to experience as manyopportunities as they can. Take your universe, and fill itwith substance.

EditorialThis year at Hutchesons’has been a year full ofnew challenges. As Sixthyears, we have had tomake decisions about ourfuture, shoulder newresponsibilities and getused to a new, moreindependent style ofworking. All of this whilstspending half of the yearunder lockdown. WhenNeil de Grasse Tysondeclared ‘We are each ofus a little universe’ did he imagine we would be likeplanets circling one another, but kept apart by forcesoutside our control? I suspect not, but the current globalsituation has meant we have lived our lives apart from thethings we so much valued being a part of. We havemissed out on many of the events we realise we havecome to treasure: our last ever music concerts, the lastFounders’ Day, the last school show.

It is in situations like these where we discover the truemeaning of the Hutchie values: we have needed creativityto find solutions such as online concerts and classes; wehave needed resilience to stay strong in the face of aglobal catastrophe; we have needed independence tomotivate ourselves to attend online classes.

This spirit is what has made my time at Hutchie somemorable. But all good things must come to an end andalthough I look forward to what lies ahead, my excitementis marred slightly by the great sadness I feel at thethought of leaving Hutchie. I will be forever grateful foreverything the school has given me – the friends that Ihave made, the memories I have and the wonderfulopportunities I have been given. Co-editing theHutchesonian has opened my eyes even further to thewealth of clubs, trips and societies that Hutchie has tooffer and it has been a truly rewarding, but challenging,experience. I would encourage everyone to cherish theirtime at school so that they are always able to look back onthis part of their life fondly. To go back to this year’stheme, we are each a little universe, teeming with infinitepossibilities. And, if we use the lessons we have learntduring lockdown, the things we can go on to achieve areinfinite.

From the RectorEvery year, the impact of

Nature is writ large aroundthe world – whetherthrough earthquake, flood,

drought or famine. Recent floodingaside, we are fortunate in the UnitedKingdom that we have such atemperate and mild climate thatshields us greatly from other naturaldisasters.

However, this year has beendifferent. The Year of Covid-19 or togive its full name: SARS-CoV-2.

Tennyson personifies Nature as “redin tooth and claw”, a comment on,and description of, the sometimesviolent competition betweenorganisms; he wrote these lines inconsideration of the emergence ofevolutionary theories in the 1850s.Having recently watched the ratherhallucinogenic film Apocalypse Nowby Francis Ford Coppola, I re-readConrad’s Heart of Darkness which itis based upon (a difficult text to readin many ways). It is full of suchevocations: the looming jungle,Nature filled with malign purpose,invoking fear.

Buried deep within Darwin’s Theoryof Evolution is the role of chance.Students of Biology will be familiarwith chance mutations occurring toDNA, changing the code in cells andso sometimes the very cellsthemselves. Viruses have a particulartendency to mutate fast, havingturned the infected cell into a virusfactory, but one that makes poorquality copies of the virus with manyerrors in their code of RNA or DNA.More than one virus can infect anorganism, and this allows brand newviruses to assemble and be released,and, possibly, to spread in new ways– and we await information about theorigins and emergence of SARS-CoV-2.

The virus is not malign itself. Thevirus is a simple structure built ofchemicals and not even living. It

cannot have sentience nor, therefore,purpose. But the impact of thecoronavirus is deeper than this.There is the immediate effect on ourfriends and families as well as onthose we do not know; we think ofthem all often. There is the widerimpact on the global economy, andthe duration of this is still to beknown. Yet at the heart of all thesetroubles, the response has beenpositive too.

The strength and depth of support forour unique NHS, for which we in theUK are always grateful, has reallyshone. Along with the Thursday Clap

for the Carers, Captain Sir ThomasMoore captured this spirit as hewalked his garden and raised tens ofmillions for the NHS. The charitableside of all of us in the Hutchie Familyhas been demonstrated more locallyand there are many examples to beproud of: the school charity this yearis Give a Dog a Bone and duringlockdown, children have beensending cards and pictures to olderpeople who are more isolated in ourcommunity; Zara in P7 makingscrubs for NHS staff and many pupilsand staff playing versions of“Somewhere over the Rainbow”.

best time to complete their learning.In this way, the beats and rhythms ofour homes work with the beats andrhythms of your homes, and we canfind accord and shared purpose evenin the middle of such disruption.Supporting this throughout, ourfabulous team of resilient teacherswere on hand to guide and helpstudents as they asked for help.

But of course, we miss each other.Feedback – from you, fromresearchers, from our teachers – tellsus that the aspect that is missed themost by teaching in this way is thesocial connection. Contact in classbetween teacher and pupil, andbetween pupil and pupil; the timeswhen we share a glance, a joke, anod, a smile, where conversation isdynamic and expands knowledge;real life, real time contact. This ismirrored exactly by what we all feelin our lockdown-lives: we missspeaking to and seeing our friendsand our extended family. Contactand touch are so very important tothe social animal Homo sapiens.

Because that is the other side ofNature – human nature and all itsglories: compassion, hope, creativity,care. Yes, we are awed by whatNature can do, but we are alsocomforted by what we can achieve inthe face of its power. We are buoyedup by how the Hutchie Family isweathering this storm together. Weknow that in the months ahead, morechallenges await but we can reflecton what has been achieved and takethe very many positives forward withus as the future emerges.

I spoke with many of our parents as they dropped off, or picked

up their children, and their sense of duty and calm

professionalism was always greatly reassuring to me.

Educationally, the nation has foundthe crisis difficult. Schools wereclosed by the Scottish andWestminster Governments, with onlyKey Worker Care allowed. I wouldtake this opportunity to thank thosestaff who were able to volunteer tofill our rota, and to come in toKingarth Street to work with thosechildren whose Key Worker parentsneeded to be able to work. I spokewith many of our parents as theydropped off, or picked up theirchildren, and their sense of duty andcalm professionalism was alwaysgreatly reassuring to me.

The majority of children, though, hadto stay home and work there, withtheir immediate family. The schoolresponded well, working tirelessly toskill up in a whole new methodology,to establish how to provide highquality learning and teaching at adistance. Thankfully, moderncomputer technology makes sharinginformation technologystraightforward, certainly in a waythat would amaze those Victorianauthors. Based on evidence fromother countries who had experiencedprevious coronavirus lockdowns, theschool chose not to try and replicatethe timetable, with teachers speakingto their computer and childrenwatching. We selected deliberately amodel known as asynchronousteaching where the teachers recordand produce the teaching at adifferent time to the pupilsconsuming that lesson and learningfrom it. This reduces the pressuresand pinch-points produced when allmust be there at the same time, andnaturally leads to a semi-structuredday where pupils decide when is the

The moment we set foot inMr Gamble’s office, and allsqueezed onto the sofa,‘The Good Team’ was

formed. It really has been amonumental team effort – with helpfrom Depute Head Girl and Boy, OrlaYoung (S6) and ArunUttamchandani (S6). They sharedour delight at being given thisopportunity – and our anticipation, aswe were not fully sure what thesenew roles involved!

After being thrown in at the deepend, speaking at assembly on thefirst day, we quickly developed ourskills in the daunting task of publicspeaking. This is a key part of the joband this first assembly was ablessing in disguise as it prepared usfor the readings at the RemembranceService which followed soon after.Thankfully, for Craig’s sake, there wasno dramatic re-enactment of WilliamRhodes Moorhouse’s letter! TheGeorge and Thomas Awards wasArun’s public speaking debut. He washighly sought after by the audience,and his ‘very nice voice’ was acommon occurrence at our morningassemblies, and never failed to bringa smile to everyone’s faces.

These roles open up manyopportunities and allowed us to viewthe inner workings of the school in a

different light. As well as publicspeaking, formal lunches andparents’ evenings, we were taskedwith the much-anticipated trip to pickthe school Christmas trees. This wasdefinitely a highlight amongst theuniversity applications and prelimpreparations that were also going onat that time of year. After MrsPeterkin held Mr Martin back fromthe biggest tree in the shop, andMegan managing to avoid carolsinging, we were treated to a hotchocolate and cake.

Despite our carefully worded passiveaggressive messages on the ‘Thischat is used for basketball only’ S6group chat, this description wasunfortunately taken literally by mostof its members, despite asking for‘prefects’ and volunteers. Althoughwe were hit with the fear of thecoronavirus in January 2020, it seemsthat some of our prefects decidedthey had to self-quarantine fromAugust 2019, which sadly preventedthem from fulfilling their duties.Those who avoided this, however,were a great help at parents’evenings, open mornings and manyother events during the year.

Despite many late nights at parents’evenings, these were a chance formany memorable experiencesincluding Orla’s dinner dilemma, the

jazz tea trolley, and Mr Martin’ssingalong. Unfortunately, to ourdisappointment, Founders‘ Day waspostponed due to COVID-19. Thiswas an event we were lookingforward to and we are sad to missout on the kilt photo shoot with MrMartin.

And of course, the fifth comrade in‘The Good Team’ was the one andonly Mr Martin. He never fails tobreak us into fits of giggles with hisremarks. He also never fails to pointout flaws in any public speaking andhas been a great form tutor, althoughputs new meaning into ‘better latethan never.’

Although we are reluctant to saygoodbye and to pass on our duties toour successors, we will never forgetlife at Hutchie as we move onto ournext chapter – and we are well awarethat as captains of Hutchesons’Grammar School, the door is alwaysopen.

Staff NotesLeavers

In June we said farewell to AmyMurch in the Music Department.Amy’s association with the schoolstretches back to 2008 when shejoined us working as a percussionteacher at Kingarth Street. For allthose that knew and worked withAmy, she was characterised by hersheer energy and enthusiasm,while passing on those qualities toall she encountered.

As well as one to one instrumental teaching, Amy directedthe primary percussion ensemble, entering her pupils incompetitions, building their confidence and inevitablybringing much in the way of success to all involved. Amy,an outstanding percussionist and performer, inspired allthose she worked with. She was a logical thinker and herpractical approach led to many new initiatives in theprimary school. She had a very loyal band of followers andadmirers.

Her own career progression moved in many directions. Abrief ‘sabbatical’ leave in 2012 took her to the States,before she returned to her work at Hutchesons’, this timemoving up to Beaton Road. For many, there was a realsense of delight that she had returned to her teaching andbecause of her, they sustained their interest in music rightthe way through the senior school.

Amy soon developed the direction of her career, and whilegiving classroom demonstrations and observing others,she made the decision to apply for teacher training atMoray House School of Education. We were delightedwhen she returned to complete her probation period withus, securing her first teaching appointment. Becomingestablished in her new role, Amy brought much to theMusic Department. Working closely with Laura Munro,she produced the first ever ‘Hutchie Rocks’, opening ourminds to a new style of event while at the same timeraising considerable sums for the school charity. Amy’sambition and drive meant that she would always belooking for the next challenge.

Fiona Macphail’s association withthe school began when sheenrolled as a pupil in P1, whichallowed her a unique perspectivewhen returning to Kingarth Street.

For several years Fiona taught inInternational schools in both Cairoand Bonn, and on her return toScotland, in various schools inGlasgow. Having been Head ofPrimary at both The Park and Laurel Park Schools, shereturned home to Hutchie in 2001 as Depute Rector andbecame Head of Primary in 2014. Throughout her tenure,she ensured that children were at the core of herdecisions, developing them academically and importantly,as people.

Fiona’s skill with language is second to none, be it written,where she was an invaluable help to staff whencomposing letters, emails and reports, or when speakingto concerned parents.

Travelling is one of Fiona’s passions, and invariably shehad adventures or mishaps whilst on holiday! If she cameback to school without some tale of an incident oraccident, it was a bit of a disappointment! A little-knownfact is her enjoyment of visiting graveyards when shetravels and her inordinate amount of knowledge of their‘clients!’

Fiona enjoys listening to the radio; this often gave herideas for assemblies. Being an ardent ‘footie’ fan, sheliked listening to live matches to hear about her belovedAberdeen, enjoying the post-match banter as well asprogrammes such as The Archers, Desert Island Discsand the Shipping Segment.

Family and friends come first in her life, but she also findstime to read extensively, take a keen interest in boththeatre and film and indulge her life-long love ofworldwide travel. A Hutchesonian to the core, she willcontinue to take a keen interest in the school.

We wish her a happy and healthy retirement.

Graham began his career atHutchesons’ in 1991. Originally inthe Economics department,Graham quickly gained a reputationas an excellent and highlyrespected teacher.

During his time at Hutchie, heworked hard at promoting ModernStudies and had a clear vision aboutwhere he wanted the departmentto be heading. His passion and enthusiasm for the subjectled to it becoming a department in its own right.

After graduating with her degree inHuman Resource Management, Jillworked in HR in a couple ofdifferent organisations beforejoining Hutchesons’ in April 2009.She joined as HR Manager and veryquickly made an impact with herprofessional yet caring approach toall manner of staff matters.Whether assisting in staffrecruitment and appointment,advising Governors on HR issues, helping to resolve andmediate if work was difficult or assisting and advising asstaff went through life changes – births, marriages,illnesses or bereavements – Jill did so with genuinewarmth. She always saw and cared for the individual and

all of our staff benefited from that. Her contribution wasfurther recognised when she was promoted to the post ofBusiness Manager – HR & Operations in 2015.

Her great sense of humour ensured she was an integralmember of the ‘Circle of Trust’ ie the Trust Office. She wasalways one for encouraging opportunities for colleagues toget together away from their desks, whether that be onnights out or team-building treks. She also went (happily?)out of her comfort zone to join in the Trust Office’s runningexploits – Santa Dash(es!), Hairy Haggis Relay and more.

Jill will be sorely missed but we wish her well as sheleaves us to join Glasgow Academy as their Bursar.

was extremely popular amongst pupils, especially those inS6. He was voted Favourite Teacher in the Year Book andkept in touch with many former pupils long after they saidfarewell to Hutchie. Through leading trips in the UK andabroad, to inviting in a broad range of speakers, Grahambrought the subject alive for his pupils.

Indeed, Graham’s guidance and encouragement havehelped many to thrive in the Hutchie environment – bothpupils and those who worked in the department alongsidehim. Admired and respected by staff and pupils alike,Graham was a thoughtful and supportive colleague.

We wish him well in his retirement.

As Senior Teacher of Mathematics,Jim taught Maths with us fromSeptember 2015 to 31 January2019, contributing to the success ofthe department. With departmentalresults consistently excellent – anda particularly high percentage ofstudents staying on to study Higherand Advanced Higher Maths – Jimwas integral to this. A strongmathematician, with a very goodknowledge of SQA examinations in AH Pure Maths,Mechanics and Statistics, Jim was well liked by pupils,

staff and parents. He had an infectious enthusiasm forMaths and teaching: pupils would look forward to beingallocated Jim as their teacher and would derive comfortfrom the reassurances he gave about their abilities in thesubject and impending examinations. He always showedhimself to be an innovative and interesting teacher andwas always willing to give his time generously to those hetaught as well as those outside his classes – for example,the preparation of candidates for University application.Jim was a keen supporter of the wider school life andwould attend many events: he liked to get involved.

At the end of June, the School saidfarewell to Ken Walton who retiredfrom teaching after some 17 yearsin the Music Department. Throughhis work in the classroom and extra-curricular ventures, he contributedgreatly to the successes of Musicand to the life and ethos of theschool. Ken joined the staff ofHutchesons’ for a ‘second time’ in2002, coinciding with the openingof the Fotheringay Centre.

Ken’s talent in performance was quickly realised and hebecame Head of Music Performance in 2007 bringing hisvast knowledge and experience of music to our pupils in ahugely beneficial way. Many will remember Ken’scollaboration with the Primary School and Art Departmentin producing the magnificent ‘Colours of the Clyde’concert in the City Halls in 2008, where he broughttogether hundreds of children and staff in a creativemusical extravaganza based on the words of author AlexGray, herself a former pupil. At the time she described thewhole occasion as ‘one of the best experiences in herlifetime’. A few years later we were treated to a similarexperience with ‘Shall Brothers Be’, a work which Kencomposed, based on Burns’ ‘A Man’s a Man’, comprising

3 choirs, full orchestra, soloists and Pipe Band, all in theopulent setting of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Ken was highly imaginative in devising ways to showcasemusic down the years, but also in embracing collaborativework with other departments. Given his widerprofessional connections to the music industry, we havebeen fortunate that he managed to bring many soughtafter musicians and performers to Hutchesons’, allowingour pupils to benefit from working with the best. Thesescenarios included musical workshops, composing forumsor some memorable ‘Talking Points’ lectures. One majorhighlight was surely when International violinist NicolaBenedetti came into school, working and performing withthe String Orchestra, followed by an open conversationwith Ken.

There is no doubt that Ken’s personality and ‘can do’attitude allowed our young musicians at Hutchie to thrivein music while achieving the highest of standards. ‘Mr.Walton’ was the epitome of a Hutchesons’ teacher andmany of us in the school community, pupils, parents andcolleagues have good reason to be grateful for hisendeavours in the service of the school. We wish him wellin his retirement.

Ken WaltonMusic Department

Margaret has had a long associationwith Hutchie; 39 years in total if oneincludes her time as a pupil here!During her teaching career she hastaught at every stage except P1 andP7, earning a reputation as anexcellent teacher. Margaret wasHousemistress in charge of LochielHouse at the primary, enjoying thispastoral role. She was also SeniorTeacher with responsibility for whatwas known previously as Religious Education. MrJamieson, the then headteacher, asked her to revamp it,which she did, researching and collating resources for thisarea of the curriculum.

Margaret must be the winner, or certainly a strongcontender, in running and organising a lunchtime Club forthe longest time. She ran Scripture Union Club at KingarthStreet for 30 years – surely a record!

Margaret has a strong faith and has many hobbies andinterests. She is very musical and enjoys singing.Margaret has always enjoyed football; her dad was a keenfootball fan, and from a young age, her own skills werehoned in the back garden. Her dad was none other thanSir Alex Ferguson’s Boys’ Brigade leader during his earlyyears in Govan, coaching his football on Saturdaymornings - a connection which endured throughout herfather’s life.

We wish her all the best in her early retirement, enjoyingthese hobbies.

Nicolle joined the staff atHutchesons’ on a one-year contractin August 2018. She quicklyestablished a good rapport with thechildren in her care. She was thePrimary 2 representative on theworking party developing the SocialSubjects syllabus and successfullyled the Hutchesons’ History Weekat Primary 2.

Despite being at Hutchesons’ for a relatively short time,

Nicolle’s outgoing personality, positive outlook and keensense of humour endeared her to all within the schoolcommunity.

As a former pupil Nicolle acknowledged the importance ofco- curricular activities in the learning experience andinvolved herself in the wider life of the school giving freelyof her time. This included organising a P5-7 Dance Club.

We wish her the best of luck for her return to Edinburgh.

Rachel initially taught at Lilybankbefore joining the staff at KingarthStreet where she worked for 12years teaching Primary 4 - 7.

A calm, even-tempered personalityand infinite patience were Rachel’strademark. All her colleaguesappreciated this, often commentingon how her pupils responded,finding much reassurance in it.

Rachel was always involved in running or helping atvarious clubs in school eg teaching knitting or attendingEco Committee weekly meetings to ensure the childrenfulfilled their duties. During her years in Primary 4 and 7,she was involved with major theatrical productions,latterly as Director, where her composure and outstandingorganisational skills, were valued in equal measure. Sheenjoyed the staff fitness classes and was a member ofthe Staff Book Club.

Rachel BallanceKingarth Street

When the Staff Engagement Committee was introduced,Rachel was quick to volunteer her services, and was apopular choice as representative for the Primary teachingstaff, always willing to lend a listening ear to discuss anyconcerns.

A woman of many talents, she has several interests outwith school. A gifted singer, she is a committed choirmember, enjoying both rehearsals and concerts – she haseven performed at The Royal National Mod! She is also aBrown Owl, providing many wonderful activities for thechildren. She enjoys gardening and being outdoors,especially sailing.

Sandra joined Hutchesons’ as theHead of Physics in August 2008.She had previously been teaching atRobert Gordon’s College inAberdeen. She brought fresh ideasand a new perspective to adepartment which had beencomfortable in its ways for a longtime. Her calm and level-headedapproach was a key factor inwinning hearts and minds withinthe department. She always led by example;demonstrating the change she wanted to see and was aconstant source of ‘good practise’ for all things in PhysicsEducation.

Sandra was very supportive of our international exchangeprogrammes, particularly in our Comenius project with ourpartners in Poland and Germany. Jim McDougall has veryfond memories of a weekend in Radomsko during 2011with Sandra and our late friend Gillian Tooth. It was an

enjoyable time in the generous company of the Polishhosts. Highlights included a cycle trip through the woodson a perfect Autumn afternoon, and visiting Krakow,watching a thousand lanterns float into the evening sky,high above the castle.

After a decade in post, the department is almostunrecognisable since Sandra’s first day at Hutchie. Thechange is a testament to her hard work and endeavourover the duration of her time with us. When she wasn’ttrying to modernise the department, Sandra enjoyedsocialising with colleagues and taking in shows. She spentmuch of her free time travelling to visit family in the frozennorth and on shopping trips with relatives visiting sunnyGlasgow for the weekend.

Sandra leaves us to return home to Aberdeen to be closerto her family. She was delighted to accept the position ofHead of Physics back at her old stomping ground ofRobert Gordon’s College. She takes our warmest wisheswith her.

Sandy joined the school in 2012, atfirst as a classroom teacher ofMathematics, before taking over asHead of Mathematics. His love forMathematics is obvious as a threadrunning throughout his career. Aftercompleting an Applied Mathematicsdegree at St. Andrews University hetrained at Jordanhill College beforestarting his teaching career atDunoon Grammar School. Afterspending twenty years there he moved on to PaisleyGrammar where he became Head of Mathematics. Whiledoing all of this he turned his hand to many other things,teaching for the University of Maryland, taking on an OpenUniversity Degree in Computing and working as anAssociate lecturer for the OU.

Sandy’s love for Mathematics was always best used tohelp students learn. In the classroom he was patient,knowledgeable and supportive. Outside the classroom hewas approachable and willing to help any pupil, at anytime. Pupils and parents at Hutchesons’ trusted him, and

under his steady hand the department was able to achieveconsistently excellent results. Sandy’s love for the subjectlay in the beauty found in the methodical, and it wasalways a joy to discover his immaculate board notes left ina classroom after a lesson. There wasn’t a course offeredby the school that Sandy did not teach, and his knowledgeand experience will be sorely missed.

I know that Sandy will be savouring his retirement. Aswell as spending time with his family, wife Anne anddaughters Seonaid and Catriona, Sandy will no doubt bespending time on the slopes as a keen skier. He also lovesto sail and is a talented musician who as well as singing,has recently turned his hand to the ukulele. As much aswe at Hutchesons’ will miss Sandy, there is no doubt thathe will make the most of every moment he is not in work.I’m sure that he misses the classroom, where he wasalways happiest, but he will leave safe in the knowledgethat there is a generation of young mathematicians wholove the subject just as he does due to his passion andhard work.

After university Alex embarked on a career intelevision, making documentaries on a wide range ofhistorical subjects from theatre in Ancient Greece tothe history of the CIA. After over a decade in theindustry, Alex has taken his love of storytelling awayfrom the television set and into the classroom. Awayfrom work Alex plays bassoon in the GlasgowChamber Orchestra and cricket with the BBC ScotlandCricket Club. He is married with two young daughters.

I was incredibly excited when I wasappointed Head of Primary atHutchie as I knew it to be one ofthe oldest and most successfulschools in Scotland. Now, after awonderful start to my time here, Ican see clearly why the school hassuch a strong reputation for a warmsense of belonging. The welcomeand support I have received hasbeen so important, not just for mebut for my whole family as we relocated acrosscontinents, started new jobs and joined a new school.

For the past 20 years I have been involved in InternationalEducation, working in successful schools across theworld. Along this journey, I have worked in Doha,Bangkok, Brussels, and for the last 9 years, in KualaLumpur – where I was the Deputy Head and then ActingHead of Primary. These experiences have developed mypassion for inter-cultural and values-based education. As asenior leader, I have been focussed on improving learningboth for the young people in my care but also theprofessional growth of staff and the engagement betweenhome and school – building a strong learning cultureacross the whole community.

These experienceshave given me inspiration and insight on how tocontinually improve the provision for pupils.

During my first few months at Hutchie, I have seen such acommitment and enthusiasm for continual growth: thepupils’ attitude to learning, the staff involvement inprofessional development, the parental engagement andthe clear vision from the Rector and the Board. This isevident that Hutchie not only has a strong history behind itbut also looks to the future, striving to improve andmaintain its ambition to be the leading independent schoolin Scotland. I look forward to sharing my experience andto learning from those around me so that I cansuccessfully lead the Primary School in the next part of itsjourney.

Away from school, my wife and three children are lookingforward to being closer to family in Moray, Fife andPerthshire, exploring the West of Scotland and watchingChampions League football at a more respectable time ofday (not 3am Malaysian time).

Calum is a major contributor to the work of the UKMathematics Trust and actively enjoys taking part in settingproblems for competitions, contributing to Mathematicspublications and speaking at Summer Schools. In hisspare time, Calum enjoys running, learning languages andtravelling.

Mr. Wolf-Root studiedmathematics and Russiancivilization at the University ofChicago, and more mathematicsat the Independent University ofMoscow, in Russia. He returnedto California to studymathematics and mathematicseducation at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley, and taughthigh school nearby, at El CerritoHigh School, for 9 years. There he ran the Math Cluband was part of the Gay Straight Alliance. He alsotaught Trigonometry to primary students in the

summer. Mr. Wolf-Root then moved to ruralPennsylvania to support his wife’s academic career,and taught for a year and a half at State College AreaHigh School, where he ran the Diversity Club and wasinvolved in the LGBTQA+ Alliance.

On December 25th 2016, Mr. Wolf-Root moved toScotland again to support his wife’s academic career.He taught for two years at Govan High School, startingthe LGBT Club and the International Club. He hopes toshow his students that people from all over the world,for thousands of years, of all genders, sexualities,religions and races have contributed to the poetry oflogical ideas that is mathematics.

I was born in Belfast and have livedand worked there for the majority ofmy adult life.

My original career path was as aQuality Engineer in our very ownshipyard but, back in 2000,redundancies were announced.The majority of my friends movedto shipyards in Glasgow and I tookthe head-staggers, sold my houseand paid for myself to return to University to follow mypassion for Physics and to complete my degree and myPGCE.

I have never looked back. Since then, I have worked asboth a teacher and Head of Science in a busy inner-citySecondary school in Belfast. I have always appreciatedthe opportunity to be part of a school community and, inmy time there, I was lucky enough to start a PTA group,

set up a careers provision for sixth years and work asHealth and Safety Rep, First Aider and Fire Marshal,amongst other endeavours. When my school wentthrough an amalgamation, 5 years ago, I again used thisas a catalyst for change, asked to go to a 4-day week andcompleted an MSc in Education. It was as part of thisprogramme of study that I had the opportunity to carryout research into the links between motivation andattainment.

When my studies were completed, I found myselflooking for a new challenge. My lovely ex-shipyardfriends have spent nearly 20 years sending me applicationforms for jobs in Glasgow and I have always ignoredthem. When I read the advertisement for Hutchesons’,however, I was instantly drawn to the word, “belong.” Iam privileged to be able to say that I am now a part of theHutchie “Team” and I look forward to many happy yearsworking within, and contributing to, the schoolcommunity.

U16, U18, U21 and Senior levels in Hockey and currentlyplays for Clydesdale Ladies 1st XI. Heather also playsteam tennis for Giffnock T.C. and as a junior played atdistrict level. As an athlete she represented the school inDistrict and National Championships.

Heather has been passionate about teaching from a youngage and understands the value of commitment to othersand herself. She has assisted in ski trips, hockey trips andorganised dance displays in recent years. She loves torelax by golfing, cooking, listening to music, dancing andconnecting with friends.

For the school year 2019/2020, the CharityCommittee chose, on behalf of the schoolcommunity, to support Give a Dog a Bone. Givea Dog a Bone is a local charity, based in

Shawlands, which brings together lonely individuals in theelderly community and animals without a home. Unitingthese two deserving groups creates loving bonds and,because the charity covers all the financial barriersassociated with owning a pet, allows many lonely elderlypeople, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to, to own a pet.Although the charity has a community base in Shawlands,the project is UK-wide. The work of the charity benefitsmany individuals and the constant companionship of a petallows the owners new motivation as they are brought asource of affection and company which remains withthem throughout their days.

In addition to this, Give a Dog a Bone also runs acommunity space project which offers a warm andfriendly space for those who are retired to engage withothers and enjoy a range of free activities throughout theirweek. This creates purpose and companionship for manypeople who otherwise would not have the opportunity tosocialise and allows older people to remain active as theycan choose to enjoy activities such as group dog walks.The range of activities offered by Give a Dog a Bone

mirrors the true ethos of the charity as they allowfriendships to be formed and people to be broughttogether, whether that be through crafts, meeting therescue dogs or learning a new language. The clear impactthat this has on the community has made it a pleasure forus to support Give a Dog a Bone.

At the annual Winter Fair, we were delighted to welcometwo representatives of the charity – and their dogs – aswe raised money to support their work. The members ofthe Charity Committee assisted by selling home bakingand the money raised showed how strongly the wholeschool community supports this charity. In addition to this,many pupils and staff (along with their pets) participated inthe Santa Dash – through Glasgow raising sponsorship forthe charity. Further sponsorship was collected by pupilswho were involved in the Cross Country Championshipsand they thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity tomeet and engage with the founder of Give a Dog a Bone,and, of course, her dogs. We look forward to partaking inmany future events to support this worthy charity and aredelighted to play a part in promoting their work.

Each year the school pays tribute to those whofought and those who lost their lives in both of theWorld Wars. It is always a moving service whichhighlights the sacrifices made, not only by formerHutchesonians but all of those who played their partin the wars. Head Boy and Head Girl, Craig Geddes(S6) and Megan Brown (S6) spoke about the life of aformer pupil who was sadly a victim of the FirstWorld War. As part of this, they read letters writtenby him to his wife and son; a particularly poignantpart of the service. Accompanying this was thechoir, which sang beautifully. Directed by MrRhodes, the choir sang ’Angus Dei’, from the ArmedMan by Karl Jenkins with Mr Murray playing theorgan. The prayers read by members of staff as wellas bagpipe playing from Craig Geddes (S6) andGreg Turner (S5) created a beautifully movingservice.

On November 29, the senior school hosted a festiveWinter Fair to raise money for ‘Give a Dog a Bone.’ Localbusinesses sold products alongside pupils, and therewas a fantastic turn-out from pupils and parents alike.S2 pupils in particular could have given candidates on‘The Apprentice’ a run for their money, given their savvyselection of quality products to sell, all with a focus on

Winter Fairsustainability. The marketing and salesmanship that wason display was truly impressive. In total, we aredelighted to confirm that the Fair raised over £1200pounds, and we would like to thank all pupils, parents,staff, and local businesses who helped to make thisevent such a success.

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an activecitizenship programme which empowers#generationchange to make a difference in their localcommunities whilst developing a host of skills. Eachparticipating school is responsible for directing a £3000 YPIgrant to a local charity through a unique programme ofteamwork, research and competition.

S3 took part in YPI (Youth Philanthropy Initiative) this year.It is a great opportunity to broaden our horizons and learnabout compassion for the world around us. In our formclasses, our team (Rachel Brolly, Johnny Bradley, JamieCalder, Steven Carswell, Lily Cornell, all S3) picked andmade connections with our chosen charity. We thenstarted working on our unique presentations.

The charity we picked was PEEK (Possibilities for Each andEvery Kid). We chose them because we’re very passionateas a group about children’s welfare and happiness.

We were delighted when PEEK advised they werehappy to work with us on our presentation and supportedus all the way through the process. When it came to ourform presentations, we were extremely nervous butexcited because we were confident and had prepared well.We incorporated games and interactive elements into ourpresentation which showed that kids can have fun whilst

Hutchie XWhen Mr. Wilson announced that Hutchie would be hosting a Ted Talkstyle event, I was extremely interested. Memories of late-night YouTubebinges about replying to spam e-mails all came flooding back to me in aninstant. I decided to do my talk on being autistic, and all the challengesthat come with being autistic. Mr Wilson soon informed me that I wouldbe going on last, which was admittedly a lot of pressure. Depending onyour viewpoint, this could be a blessing or a punishment. One playing ofRadiohead’s Creep, many PowerPoint slides, and one extended rant onSheldon Cooper later and I was done. It felt great to speak up about anissue which has so much misinformation surrounding it, and really feellike I made a difference.

building skills such as teamwork. Our main idea was that ifwe could make a classroom of teenagers laugh in just over30 seconds then just imagine how much could be done byPEEK in a summer holiday or in a year!

When we were selected in our form to go through to theyear semi-finals we gave our all and after a tough decisionmade by the teachers (Mr Russell, Mr Boswell and MissBeedham) we were selected to go through to the finals!

We prepared until the final and delivered our presentationto all of S3 as well as a panel of tough judges: MrsWindows, Mrs Stewart, Mr Gambles and our guest judgeMr Buchan who is a Community Partner of YPI in Glasgow.

In the end we managed to win the grand prize for ourcharity! It was a great feeling knowing that our smallpresentation has helped each and every kid. During ourcommunity enrichment week (May 2020) and beyond, wehad planned to continue our ties with PEEK via theirvolunteer programmes.

Taking part in YPI has been a great activity for everyoneinvolved and we’re grateful that PEEK has benefited fromit, too.

Since school started back after summer, the J8 Botswanagroup has been keeping very busy! We’ve been raisingmoney to aid our scholarship programme with a school inLerala, Botswana, by taking part in a colour run as well asselling Marula products. In December last year membersof our group, with the help of former Hutchie Geographyteacher, Mr Clarke, travelled to lots of Christmas markets,including the Savoy Centre market, the Langside Parish

Church fair and the Hutchie Christmas fair. We also soldour products at the SNP coffee morning in January, whichwas an amazing experience.

With big plans ahead, like a teachers’ car wash and araffle, J8 Botswana is not slowing down; and we hope tocontinue funding scholarships for vulnerable children!

For the past two years, we have had the amazingopportunity of being part of the J8 group for Tanzania,raising money to send children in Zanzibar to school.We have also taken part in many other events – weraised over 500 books for a food bank to give asChristmas presents and we have written letters to thesix children we’re currently sponsoring in Zanzibar,creating a personal link with them.

Closer to home, we’ve also connected with a localprimary school to encourage reading and improvepupils‘ literacy skills by reading with them and writingbook reviews. To raise money, we did a sponsored 5K

run, had a stall at the Hutchie Christmas fair, and we’recurrently planning to climb Ben Nevis. What’s more,we’re in the process of making videos in which we arereading classic children’s books, both to send to theprimary school here, and our sponsored children inZanzibar.

We would encourage everybody to get involved withJ8 as it is a great way of giving back and helping thoseless fortunate receive an education, which we oftentake for granted.

In November 2019, JacksonMcCawley (S5) and I had thepleasure of hosting two Australianstudents for three weeks. Teganand Jaxon live in Sheppartonwhich is two hours north ofMelbourne.

During their stay with us theyattended Hutchie and fullyparticipated in our school life. Weheld a ceilidh for them in aid of ourschool charity, Give a Dog a Bone,and enjoyed Scottish refreshmentsincluding shortbread, Tunnocksbiscuits and Irn Bru. Jackson and Ieach planned trips with our gueststo let them experience our cultureand customs. We visited Loch

Lomond and Edinburgh and wealso took them to see many of thefamous landmarks in London.

Jackson and I are really excited tobe going to Australia in July. Weare both looking forward toexperiencing school life overthere, trying new foods, learningabout their culture, but most ofall, seeing Tegan and Jaxonagain. It was a privilege tohost a foreign exchangestudent and it was awonderful experience whichI would highly recommend.

Australian Exchange Hosts

In July 2019, Megan Baillie (S6), Logan Anderson (S6)and myself travelled to Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley,near Melbourne. We spent 3 weeks living with hostfamilies and attended their school for 2 weeks of this.During the first week we experienced daily life in a ruralAustralian town. We also had the opportunity to spend afew days in Sydney and experience its culture. Weclimbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and had a completeview of the modern city at sunset. As well as this, wevisited the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach. In aday trip visit to Melbourne, we spent the day shoppingand then saw an ‘Aussie Rules’ football match.

Back in Shepparton, we went to school for the first timeand were greeted warmly by the pupils and staff. Schoollife was very different compared to Hutchie; most of theschool’s facilities were outdoors, with there being nolunchroom. Experiencing their social life and out of schoolactivities was vastly different to Scotland and these wereenjoyed by all. Overall, it was an unforgettable experiencewhere lifelong friends were made.

When we arrived in India we were greeted by Shreeand Veena at Mangalore Airport, and despite thefatigue from 20 hours of travelling, we were all excitedfor the fun – filled week ahead. En-route to ouraccommodation for the week, we were given freshlypicked oranges from a local market. Later that evening,we visited Attur Church and a traditional Indiantemple. The temple was filled with fresh flowers andincense, as well as a holy fire to symbolise thebeginning of the festival – a great introduction to Nitte!

On our first full day, Monday, we visited Dr. NSAMEnglish Medium College where we were greeted bythe school marching band and given handmade rosesand blessed by rose water. We visited many classesand interacted with many of the pupils; it was a realhighlight of our trip. Later that day, we visited the localhospital, where we were toured around and shown allof the facilities that they have. We then visited atemple, a statue and a sacred cow sanctuary.

The following day, we visited the school and spoke tothe project pupils hoping to visit Scotland in thefollowing year about health and well-being in bothIndia and Scotland. This was an interesting part of thetrip as we compared the level of health and well-beingencouraged in both countries. During the week wewere also fortunate enough to visit the PilikulaBiological Park and a pre-mechanised heritage villagein rural India and KSHEMA Hospital in Mangalore. Wewere also able to have dinner with Mr Hegde, who isthe son of the founder of the Nitte Education Trust.This was the best night of our trip as we met manypupils who taught us games and also walked on thebeach at sunset.

At the end of the week, we dressed in sarees to giveour final farewell Scottish presentation to the entireschool. We performed the Virginia Wheel, which wasvery challenging in sarees! We then recited a Scottishpoem called ‘Farewell’, followed by the singing ofLoch Lomond and Auld Land Syne.

We are extremely grateful for all the work and effortput in by the teachers and pupils to make our stay aswelcoming and as memorable as possible. We wereshowered in an abundance of gifts that we havebrought home with us and will keep forever. Travellingto Nitte is a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity,and we would encourage anyone looking for this levelof an adventure to definitely consider it in the years tocome. Nothing will top the capacity for compassionand kindness that we were part of in the Nittecommunity.

It has been a busy and rewarding year for the HutchieAmnesty group. Led by Pragna (S6), Riya (S6), Molly(S5), myself and our committed group of pupils andteachers has learned about a variety of issues over thepast few months.

We opened the year by centring our research around‘The Day of the Disappeared’, in particular, discussingthe Chibok Girls case, five years on, and other such

Delegations from our school went totwo conferences in October, one inEdinburgh at St Georges’ School forGirls, and one to Lorentz Lyceum’s

under-reported disappearances in the Sahel. InDecember, the group wrote to the Iranian governmentto protest the imprisonment of Yasaman Aryani underforced veiling laws, a moving topic which wediscussed at length to ensure a properly informedposition.

We have also been extremely proud of – andimpressed by – the knowledge, maturity, anddedication of our group of senior pupils who continueto champion Amnesty’s ideal that ‘it is better to light acandle than to curse the darkness’.

When I was given my first pen pal letter I felt both veryexcited and very apprehensive at the same time. I wasnervous because I was unsure of what my pen pal waslike. However, when I read his letter, I was so happy withthe result. I really liked the sound of my pen pal and thewhole thing felt a bit like having a secret admirer! When Iresponded, I had a lot questions to ask my pen pal, Henry.Then, after one long month of waiting, we got ourresponse letters. When I read my 2nd pen pal letter Ithought that it was even better than my first as it turned

At the start of this year everyone in S1 wrote to someonein a different country as a pen pal. We wrote to people inMr. Wilson’s old school in Abu Dhabi called ‘BrightonCollege Al Ain’. For the past four years, the English department has beenrunning an international literary pen pals scheme whereS1 pupils are assigned a correspondent in a school abroad,to whom they can write and recommend books. This year,we worked with schools in Abu Dhabi, America and India.The children are not only exposed to a wider variety ofliterature and encouraged to read, but they are alsointroduced to the old-fashioned art of letter writing. It isalways hugely popular with the children both here andabroad and some even choose to continue theircorrespondence after completing the project.

Literary pen palsTeachers are also able to learn much about differentapproaches to education and the teaching of literature,which ultimately helps us to become more creative andflexible in our thinking.

Although the project ended rather abruptly this year, welook forward to renewing our contact with our partnerschools after lockdown and strengthening the alreadywonderful friendships we have made.

My teaching set has Pen-Pals in New York, America and Iwould like to share with you what it is like to have someoneto talk to on the other side of the world. Having Pen-Pals orwriting a letter to someone is completely different tosending a text or E-mail. It feels amazing to receive a letterbecause you know that someone has put time, effort andlots of thought into a message just for you. Some of myteaching set has more than one pen pal because in NewYork, LREI (The Little Red School House and Elisabeth IrwinHigh School) has more people in one class than us. Some

out that Henry and I had loads in common; we both lovebasketball for example. He also suggested that maybeone day, if we meet in future, we could shoot somehoops, which sounded like a plan and a lot of fun. Henryalso described me as “intellectual”, which, as I said toMiss V, was a great compliment. As a fan of all thingsAmerican, I really hope I do get to visit Henry in New Yorkand shoot some hoops with him, one day!

a great achievement for

anybody that manages it.

After my completion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s SilverAward, I decided to continue to the next level of the Dukeof Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Gold award. Split into thefive sections of Physical, Skills, Volunteering, Expeditionand Residential, Gold Duke of Edinburgh offers a widerange of experiences and a chance to meet new people.Gold encourages people to move out of their comfortzones and try something new by requiring them to learnand maintain a skill, practise and play a sport, volunteer tohelp out with their community and participate in aworthwhile 5-day residential project.

Last year students at Hutchie taking part in DofEcollectively contributed a total of over 3000 hours to helptheir local communities through the volunteering section.For the Gold training expeditions, I chose kayaking, butwalking, canoeing and mountain biking are also options.The training expeditions are easily the most enjoyable partof Gold, each one teaching valuable skills about camping,cooking and map reading without ever being dull.

Completing the camping expeditions along with the restof the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a greatachievement for anybody that manages it.

The Festival Band is an ensemble set up by Ms Freelandfor students who wish to participate in the ScottishConcert Band Festival (SCBF) and play an instrument. TheSCBF is a festival to celebrate wind bands and ensembles,in which they are graded according to a certain set ofqualities. This year, the band consisted of woodwind,brass, percussion and string players ranging from S1-S6,and it was the first time that string players had theopportunity to perform in the festival.

After a residential trip to Dounans at the start of the year,weekly rehearsals and, of course, the amazing help andsupport from all the staff who helped pupils in the band,Hutchesons’ Grammar School Festival Band finally got toperform in front of an audience in the RSNO centre. It got

It gives pupils a sense ofcommunity in the school, especially when starting intheir S1 term. Members get separated into the groupsof Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass which allows them tobe comfortable with the range of notes they will besinging. They have rehearsals every Tuesday andThursday morning, allowing them to achieve thestandard of singing Mr Rhodes has demanded.

The ChoirThe choir has performed at many events includingFounders’ Day, Princes Square at Christmas,Remembrance Day, and the November and Springconcert. Collectively, these events offer manyopportunities to perform a wide range of repertoirefrom large choral works to easy Christmas carols. Thechoir continues to improve through every performanceand they show no signs of stopping. In October, thechoir is touring to Leipzig where it will perform twoconcerts and a service in Thomaskirche Church, whichis known as a church that JS Bach often performedand directed in.

off to a thrilling start with Brian Balmage’s ‘Eagles AmongUs’, which the strings performed in, adding a beautifultouch to the song. The band then proceeded to performMozart’s ‘Horn Concerto No.4’, Michael Markowski’s ‘TheCave you Fear’ and ‘Flight of the Thunderbird’ by RichardSaucedo.

The judges gave a special mention to Katya Johnson, whoplayed a vigorous French horn solo in ‘Horn ConcertoNo.4’ and Varun Rana, who was the saxophone soloist in‘Flight of the Thunderbird’. They also particularly enjoyedthe band’s performance of ‘The Cave you Fear’ andawarded Hutchie a gold award. This means that Hutchiehas qualified to go to Perth for the finals in March!

The teatime concerts are an incentive brought in by thenew Head of Performance Music, Mr. Rhodes, and aredesigned to allow pupils of all standards to play in arelaxed way, as well as to promote and expand pupilconfidence in performance. Even though the concertshave only been introduced this year, attendance has beenpromising as many of the young musicians in the schoolhave been able to participate. Pupils can pick whateverpiece they would like to play or sing and are able to gainexperience preforming in front of their fellow musicians.

So far, we have had Strings, Brass & Percussion, Vocal,Piano, Woodwind and the Guitar. Parents are also able toattend, and many have enjoyed the laid-back approach andhad a biscuit or two as well! Performing in a few myself, Ihave noticed the confidence and feeling ofaccomplishment after performing my piece and amgrateful to be given this new opportunity.

On Thursday 20th February the highlyanticipated music competition tookplace. This year we had the honour ofhaving Chris Hart – RSNO PrincipalTrumpet – as our guest judge; wewere very lucky to have him.

Within the ‘Groups’ category, theSaxophone Quartet – Varun (S6),Alex (S4), Jacob (S2), and Finlay(S6) – won the ensemble prize,playing the exciting ‘DixielandMelody’ by Abeling. However, thespecial mention was awarded to theWind Quartet – Esther (S3),Alexander (S2), Daniel (S2), andRachel (S2) – with their performanceof ‘The Second Waltz’ byShostakovich.

Hutchie Music CompetitionThe Grades 3-4 category featuredgreat talent and Nina (S2) won thecategory by beautifully singing‘Shallow’ by Lady Gaga. The highlycommended winner was Cameron(P7) on the cello, who played ‘Sonata(Allegro)’ by Breval.

In the grades 5-6 category, there wasa wonderful variety of instrumentsfrom voice to electric guitar. Thewinner of the category was Daniel(S2), playing ‘Lucy Long’ by Godfreyon the bassoon. The highlycommended winner was Nicholas(P7), playing traditional Scottishmusic on the bagpipes.

The grades 7-8 winner was Maoyang(S3), who played the beautiful‘Lithuanian Song’ by Chopin on piano.The highly commended winner wasLaura (S5), with her amazingperformance of ‘Fantasia’ by W.AMozart on piano.

The Musician of the Year for 2020and winner of The School MusicCompetition Trophy was awarded tothe talented Daniel (S2) following hisincredible performance of ‘Solo deConcours’ by Messager on theclarinet.

Our school concerts provide pupils with confidence in their music andperformance, and allow parents to see how far their child has developed. ThisNovember, the assembly hall was sold out with an audience of around 400people.

First on was the Sinfonia, consisting of pupils ranging from Primary rightthrough to S6. They started off the night with Lord of the Rings, ‘Across theStars’ from Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean. The orchestra (nowconsisting of 70 performers) played these to a very high standard and set thetone for the rest of the night.

Following the Sinfonia, was the choir. The ensemble of 150 pupils and teacherspreformed the well-known choral work, The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. Thechoir was accompanied by a professional orchestra.

The performance was spectacular and included the call to prayer which wasdelivered by our Muslim leader Mr Abdul Wadood Sharif. It was a hugelysuccessful night for the music department and enjoyed by all who attended.

With blood, sweat and tears the Drama Department,yet again, showcased Hutchie pupils’ talent in the formof the senior show: We Will Rock You. With the addedpressure of continuing the polished standards of thesenior shows that Hutchie had produced in the past,making the entire cast tense and nervous, it is fair tosay that all involved were determined to make thisshow, based on songs by Queen, the best yet.Rehearsals commenced during December and wewere all eager to immerse ourselves in the hard workof preparing a performance but still focused onstudying for forthcoming exams! After learningchoreography, completing line runs and blockingscenes over the course of several months, we wereready to perform.

We Will, We Will Rock You

We soared through every show with flying colours,giving the whole cast a feeling of fulfilment as we didthe Drama Department, and by extension the school,proud. Friendships were formed, jokes were made,laughs were shared but most importantly, a largegroup of the school community came together toprovide an outstanding experience for all. Personally, Iwould encourage everyone to get involved in thedrama show whether it be on stage, behind the scenesor in the costume department.

Lights! Camera! Action! In March, seven S6 pupils werekeen to display their passion and determination for dramain the form of ‘Blithe Spirit’ by Noel Coward. Since thebeginning of the school year, the group had poured theirheart and soul into rehearsals whilst focusing on schoolacademia. Every Monday and Tuesday, these individualsgathered to develop their characters, block scenes andlearn lines as well as gaining confidence in performing andprogressing their bond with one another.

Despite initial disappointment due to COVID-19 cancellingthe groups intended performances of the play, they werepleased to continue it in the form of a radio play recorded

NC Dramawhilst in lockdown. During May, the NC group met weeklyto record and edit the radio production of ‘Blithe Spirit’ inthe comfort of their own homes via Microsoft Teams.Once it had been fully edited, pupils were issued with apassword for the audio to share with friends and family tolift spirits whilst in lockdown. This course was a fabulousway for pupils to work together and display theircamaraderie in challenging times.

The NC Group was also responsible for researching andexploring the social and historical context of the play,contributing to their overall performance.

The Junior Show was ‘A Spoonful of Children’s Musicals’ which was a series of acts, songsand dance scenes from several famous musicals such as Matilda, Mary Poppins, Oliver andThe Wiz. The difference between other musicals and this one was that the audience wouldpick from a number line onstage and whatever they chose determined the next act.

I was acting in the Matilda scenes as Ms Honey, the friendly schoolteacher. Before performingthe show, we had to rehearse for a few months to make sure we knew every word to thesongs and could say every line flawlessly. I really enjoyed singing and dancing on stage orwaiting backstage for the next scene to appear as the audience shouted out a number.However, the actors weren’t the only stars of the show as the school band, teachers and stagecrew played a huge part in pulling it all together. Overall, it was a very fun and interestingexperience and I would definitely do it again.

S1/S2 Junior Show

In the autumn of 2019, the Higher and Advanced Higherdrama students visited the Tramway Theatre to see aproduction of ‘The Duchess of Malfi’. The students wentto see the play as part of their Drama curriculum, allowingthem access to a fascinating plot that the students couldanalyse as part of their coursework and discuss thevarious themes in the production.

Later in the autumn term, the Advanced Highers pupilstook an afternoon trip to the Òran Mòr to see a shortproduction of ‘Mack the Knife’ as part of the ‘A Play, A Pieand a Pint’ programme. The pupils enjoyed watching theentertaining production while they ate a pie as well. Theexperience was captivating and unique and the pupilsended up using it as inspiration for their production ofShakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as part oftheir practical coursework. The various productions thatthe Drama pupils were able to see were engaging andcertainly one of the best parts of taking the Dramacourse.

This year’s Junior Show, ‘A Spoonful of Children’s Musicals’ was probably the most fast-paced show to date. Each night, the 18 numbers of singing, dancing, and acting were putin a different order chosen by the audience, with the cast having only seconds to put ontheir costumes and get ready! The numbers were all selected from a variety of children’smusicals, such as Oliver, The Sound of Music and even Shrek!

Of course, we couldn’t have done it without our amazing drama and music teachersputting us through our paces every rehearsal, and Daniel our choreographer teaching usall kinds of moves and tricks to put on display for the audience. Our hard work paid offduring our three shows, and afterwards, although everyone was absolutely exhausted, weall had smiles on our faces and had enjoyed ourselves fully.

In October, the Drama department took theAdvanced Higher and NC drama classes to view ascreening of Emma Rice’s adaptation of ‘WiseChildren.’ This wasn’t live theatre, however, it was arecorded version of live theatre. This was incrediblyinteresting as we had never experienced live-streamed theatre before. This trip also acted asinspiration for a dissertation topic idea within theAdvanced Higher class.

Overall, these trips contributed to bettering ourdrama studies in both the practical and writtenelement, as they were equally educational andenjoyable, and opened our eyes to a broadspectrum of live theatre, which was communicatedin a variety of ways.

In September 2019 the Department ran its first ‘art hub,’an event designed to give senior pupils insights intodifferent careers within the creative industries. Formerpupils Raph Selby, Lucy Dickie, Olivia Taylor, KirstenMitchell and Joanna Susskind shared some of theirexperiences of studying at university and their journeysinto the world of work. In a series of short talks with Qand A sessions, pupils gained a better understanding ofwhat it’s like to pursue courses in Architecture, Textiles,Jewellery, Product Design Engineering and Animation.

Higher Photography has gone from strength to strengthwith a record 14 pupils choosing the subject this year. Inan action-packed year, pupils have learnt how to work withtraditional analogue (film) and develop their own images inthe darkroom at Streetlevel PhotoWorks. We are gratefulto Morwenna Kearsley and Natalie Feather, both well-known Scottish Photographers, who gave pupils lots ofhandy technical tips in a series of workshops whichincluded learning about different studio lightingtechniques whilst gaining a better understanding of whatinspires famous photographers. A visit to the OscarMarzaroli exhibition in March was a wonderful opportunityto see Glasgow documented in such a powerful waythrough the medium of black and white photography.

Our annual Open Studios event took place on Monday 2ndDec. Beth Fagan (S5) and Elizabeth Millard (S5) reportthat ‘during the Open Studios we got to continue with ourpractical portfolios and see what our classmates had beenworking on. We all received feedback and praise from theparents which boosted our confidence in our work. It wasa great night that allowed us to make progress on our

work as well as show it to others. The Art Department’sOpen Studios is a great chance for pupils to work on andshowcase their portfolios to parents and peers, providinginsight into the process of creating art and the time thatgoes into it. With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, theOpen Studios is a night everyone in the Art Departmentlooks forward to.’

Advanced Higher Art and Design continues to be a popularchoice for pupils who wish to immerse themselves in astudio-based environment and pursue their creativestudies more independently. Thanks must be extended toMr McCormick and his team in the TechnologyDepartment for all the help they have given our pupilswith 3D prototyping, CAD tutorials and for generallysupporting a wonderfully positive spirit of collaboration.Marcus Arbon, Joshua Girvan, Emily Cowie, AlizaAkbar and Rory McLachlan (all S6) all head off todifferent universities to study across a range of disciplinesincluding architecture digital animation, art history, fashionand product design. We wish them every success.

Esther Leung (S3) and Nina MacDonald (S2) both won‘Highly commended’ awards in the Friends of the RoyalScottish Academy Annual Schools Art Award. The RSA isbased in Edinburgh and this is an annual competition,open to all secondary schools in Scotland which aims toencourage creativity and showcase talent. Our youngerpupils continue to enjoy a range of activities offered in thedepartment at lunchtimes, including the successfulPhotography and Textile Design club run by MrsBreckenridge and Miss Drake.

It’s great to see such talent emerge year on year atHutchie. Our talented students never fail to impress uswith their creativity and imagination! I would like to thankmy colleagues, Ms Lovell, Miss Drake and Ms Armour fortheir continued professionalism, creative flair andenthusiasm!

Print StudioDuring the autumn term, the Higher Photography class had the privilegeof meeting with Morwenna Kearsley, a Scottish photographer who worksprimarily with film photography, who spoke to us about working withanalogue cameras and developing film. The class had the chance toexplore the inner workings of an analogue camera and have a hands-onexperience, taking photos on a roll of film to then be developed in adarkroom.

After working with Morwenna in school, we then had the opportunity tomeet with her and her fellow practising photographer, Natalie Feather, inStreetlevel PhotoWorks, to process our films into negatives, and finallyinto full-sized prints. We were all apprehensive to see whether our hardwork had paid off and it was amazing to see our work appearing in frontof our eyes. It was a very memorable experience, and we were thankfulthat both photographers gave up their time to help us create beautifulprints.

I cannot begin to put into words my reaction when I firstheard about the LGBTQ+ Cafe. Finally there would be aplace for me, and others like me, to feel supported, to feelsafe and to feel seen. This club has not only met myexpectations, it has far surpassed them. In our hecticlifestyles sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed andstressed; but for the hour we spend in the LGBTQ+ Cafewe shut the world out. It’s a place where people cometogether; gay, straight, male, female and anything in-between. It’s a place where I have formed connectionswith people I would otherwise never have spoken to, aplace where I have been educated and helped educateothers, a place where everyone can relax and bethemselves. But more than anything, the LGBTQ+ Cafe isa place where change is made. Together we are takingsteps to make positive change within our community andto ensure that everyone feels welcome. The club is anincredibly unique and exciting experience and I cannotrecommend it strongly enough.

Having participated in many a public speaking competition,I am no stranger to the tremors and utter fear ofperforming in front of people. But, after that fear, when Ifinally go onto the stage to perform, all the nervousnesshas disappeared. What I can confidently bring it down to isloving it. Loving what I am talking about, what I amperforming – the whole thing, really. If I went up there,talking about something I wasn’t truly passionate about, orsomething I wasn’t truly invested in, I would flounder. Ofcourse, speaking takes courage; it takes developedconfidence and skill – but not only that. It takes true desireto speak to people about something; to tell people youropinion, stories, knowledge, experiences – true loves!And after the whole thing is over – the practice-runs, theteacher’s notes and the final performances – the buzzgoes, and you want to do the whole thing over again. Youwant to feel all the fear, all the messed-up speech drafts,for one thing. The final performance. The buzz. Nerves willalways keep you going, because they push you to standup and go for it. As my great-grandfather said: “If you’veno nerves, you’ll be no good.” So be nervous – it’ll pay off.

Public SpeakingIn December, the Advanced Higher French andSpanish classes went to Strathclyde University for aModern Languages workshop. We gained a deeperinsight of the Advanced Higher Modern Languagesexams and the high standard that we must reachbefore the exam. The hosts of the workshop gaveus great advice and tips of how to increase thestandard of our Portfolio with the help of theirexample questions. Additionally, we had the chanceto develop the quality of our essay writing.Altogether it was a very productive and beneficialmorning. Thank you to Mrs Lamont and MrsMcNeill for organising such a worthwhile visit.

In December of 2019, S1 enjoyed watching Pinocchio theplay in the Tramway theatre. We bought snacks anddrinks, and then made our way to the theatre where wefound our seats and the play began. The cast started bysinging a song and got everyone to join in with actions andlyrics. Throughout the play we had a laugh and engaged inthe eventful play. We were all on the edge of our seatsduring the climax, when Pinocchio got stolen! Everyoneloved the lively cast and had a great time, makingmemories with their friends.

Mary Shelley’s FrankensteinThe tale of Victor Frankenstein andhis monster has been a well-renowned classic ever since it wasoriginally published in the latenineteenth century. When it wasbrought to the Theatre RoyalGlasgow last year, the Englishdepartment’s Miss Bradley and MrsLeonard organised an evening out forpupils to watch the contemporary re-imagining of the Frankenstein story.By the end of the evening, we foundourselves questioning who the truemonster was: the scientist whocreated and mistreated his creation inthe pursuit of knowledge, or the“monster” who committed atrocities

because that was the only thing heknew how to do. This was anoutstanding evening with grippingaction, brilliant performances and aspectacular set. Watching live theatreis such a vital part of understandingand appreciating literary works and,for these opportunities to deepen ourunderstanding of stories, we areincredibly grateful to Hutchesons’.These shows help us more easilyrecognise and appreciate themessages and themes of the worksbeing performed, allowing us toenhance our analytical skills for use inclass.

In September, S4 and S5 pupils attended the ScottishBallet’s production The Crucible as part of their Englishstudies. It was an informative, moving, inspiring andall-around beautiful performance, which wasthoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The emotiveplay was portrayed beautifully by the dancers and itgave the audience a clear insight into the experiencesof each character and the storyline as a whole.Watching such a believable re-enactment of the playwas a great experience and will massively help pupilsto visualise and have a better understanding of theplay in their studies.

I am so grateful to have gone on thistrip of a lifetime. It was an eye-opening experience to visit a countrythat is so rich in history and culture.Moscow’s Red Square is a beautifullypicturesque with St Basil’s cathedralat its centre. The Kremlin is agorgeous complex of stunninglycolourful buildings that hold so muchmeaning from the past and thepresent. I loved performing for thetheatre school in St Petersburg and

Russia October 2019the stage was amazing. I had neverseen a revolving stage up closebefore! Although the play was short,it was really fun. The Hermitage in StPetersburg is striking enough fromthe outside but walking up the mainstaircase made me feel like royalty.The eccentric play we went to seewas very entertaining. I’ll neverforget my time at the heart ofMoscow and St Petersburg.

Over the February Week, a bleary-eyed mix of Fourth,Fifth and Sixth Years boarded the 06:05 flight atGlasgow Airport to Houston, Texas for anunforgettable week of science and technology at theNASA Johnson Space Centre. Ahead of us was aunique opportunity to experience the real work thatNASA carries out to support human endeavours inspace.

The first day saw the group designing andconstructing complete model rockets, with the aim tosuccessfully launch and return the models to theground using stage separations and parachutes.Following on throughout the rest of the week, the

Designing effectiveMartian habitats, constructing model rovers, and evenexperiencing SCUBA diving to simulate EVA walks,were all highlights of the week. Interspersedthroughout this rollercoaster of a trip were touropportunities as well meeting a former Astronaut,Mike Baker, who shared his fascinating experiencesworking at NASA over a 30-year career.

Overall, I speak for everyone when I say thank you toMrs Munro and the rest of the staff for giving us theopportunity to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Since October, Mrs Lamont’s S6 Italian class have beenvery fortunate to have been visited a few times byEleanora Apicella Fiorentino, a Chemistry student teacher,who just happens to be from Puglia in the heel of Italy. Ona cold and dreary day, late in December, Mrs Lamont andEleanora Apicella Fiorentino, taught our S6 Italian pupilshow to make fresh orecchiette pasta using semola andflour. We learned how to make orecchiette with pesto,pancetta and formaggio and learned how to skillfullyshape our ‘little ear’ shaped pasta to allow the pesto tocoat each piece for maximum taste. All pupils agreed thatthey would enjoy making pasta from scratch when theygo off to university and need a cheap and healthy mealoption. We would like to say ‘grazie mille’ to Eleanora forsuch a wonderfully delicious experience!

When dance club began in September 2019, the intention was to bringtogether pupils from various year groups who share a common passionand interest in dance. This club would allow all pupils, regardless ofwhether they had experience or not, to learn various techniques andstyles of dance in a fun, enjoyable environment. The aim was to create anatmosphere where pupils could express their emotions through danceand forget about their stresses. The four leaders, Erin Anderson (S4), AliceAbbott (S5), Sophie Barnett (S6) and Abigail Lindsay (S6), workedtogether by combining their strengths in dance to deliver classes ofvarious styles and suit everyone’s preferences. It has been thoroughlyenjoyable watching the pupils progress and build up their confidencewhile having fun and making new friends.

I think martial arts is really fun and entertaining. It teachesyou how to defend yourself and what to do if anotherperson is trying to hurt you. Martial arts also really helpsyou with your concentration and you can get relax whenyou disconnected from all the sounds around you. It issomething that makes you feel happy and that you willnever get tired of.

It also teaches you during a fight it does not matter howstrong you are because strength is not an important thingin this sport but it is your speed. If you do martial arts youwill learn how to protect yourself from someone thatwant to attack you,

But martial arts teaches you another important lessonwhich is: ”In a fight your goal is not to kill, injure or scare

Martial Artspeople and it is not even to show that you are better thanthem at fighting, but it is to get as far away from thesituation as possible.” As you become better at martialarts you will find that you are going to become muchquicker at reacting, for example: If someone throws apencil at you, you catch it or if the teacher asks you aquestion you might answer it quicker etc. Martial arts notonly make your instincts quicker but also make your mindquicker as well.

This sport is very fun practice friends and relatives andcan be successful with everyone. It makes you lessstressed, angry and makes you more calm.

The Senior Bridge Club consists of 14 players rangingfrom the new S1s, who have just moved through theJunior Bridge Club at Kingarth Street, to the S6s. We

At Kingarth Street we have an after-school Mini Bridgeclub for P7 pupils. This is a simplified form of Bridge thathelps to improve numeracy, analytical and decision makingskills while working with a partner and individually. Theclub has been running since Autumn 2017. Currently, wehave 16 pupils enjoying the class. In March of each year,the Scottish Bridge Union organise a Teams of FourChampionship with heats held throughout Scotland. Allthe pupils work very hard towards this and have had greatsuccess. In 2018 our girls‘ team won the Glasgow HeatTrophy and also the Scottish Championship Shield bycoming first overall in Scotland. In 2019, one of our teamsretained the Glasgow Heat Trophy and were well placed intheir effort for the Scottish Trophy coming a veryrespectable 5th place from 80 teams.

This year, the club’s success has continued to go fromstrength to strength as some of the members werechosen to play in international tournaments, for the fifthtime, against England, Ireland and Wales. We were proudof our achievements, having used all the invaluabletraining that had been provided to us.

We have an unrivalled success in National School Bridgeevents thanks to the commitment of our coaches over theyears. Currently, Martin Bateman, a former JuniorInternationalist and 1st Division player, Frances McKeown,a highly experienced player and Mr DiMambro, a formerbiology teacher at Hutchesons’, all help on Fridays, givingup their time and expertise so generously.

The S5 and S6 Winter Wonderland dance held at theCrowne Plaza this year was a great success and wasenjoyed by all who attended. All pupils and staff weredressed glamorously and showed off their glimmeringdresses, suits and kilts in the photo booth. We all had anamazing time dancing to the fantastic Cairnhill Ceilidhband in the beautifully decorated venue and a fabulous

Senior Dancetime singing and dancing along to Hutchie’s very own liveband, led by Mr Scott. The Senior Dance Committee hadan enjoyable few months working their magic to createthe perfect night for all.

The S6 Committee is a group of S6 pupils thatis devoted to guaranteeing the bestexperience for our last year in the school.Each Thursday during form there is acommittee meeting overseen by MrsFlannigan, the head of the committee. In thesemeetings we discuss any suggestions voicedby our fellow pupils and address anynecessary changes. If these changes aremade, those in the committee are able toreport back any positive or negative feedback.These changes can include when in the yearwe are able to go out for lunch, wearinghoodies in the bistro and end of year schooltrips. Not only do we raise issues for thingswe want to change for our year, we also helpmake changes for future S6 year groups. It hasbeen nothing but enjoyable and a pleasure tobe part of this group in our final year.

Without a shadow of a doubt, enterprise was an eye-opening experience. The purpose of the project was tocreate a small successful business, using creativity,initiative and teamwork, with the intention of reflectingthe process of running a business in the future. The ideawe had was to hand print eco-friendly tote bags,bookmarks and cards and sell them to the general public.My team was small but mighty, with only three of us athand; this meant that not only did we have to design andmanufacture the products, we also had to take on thepositions of accountant, secretary and manager.Considering we were small in number, the success we

Since the start of the school year, several pupils from S6have volunteered to help at Kingarth Street during our freeperiods to help with the primary and pre-school. Fromtrying to explain what a colour was to being drawn on by apack of 4 year olds, there was never a dull moment. Everyweek pupils were asked an endless stream of questionsand got to hear about the intricate daily lives of thechildren. We help the teachers in a variety of waysincluding assisting in art classes, helping pupils to readtheir class books and encouraging the children while they

tackle their difficult maths equations. The children wereconsistently excited to see the S6s and constantly on theirbest behaviour. As a former pupil of the primary school, itwas especially delightful to once again see the teacherswho taught us when we were that age and see all theways in which the school had changed since ourdeparture. The experience was undoubtedly consideredby many S6s to be one of the highlights of our year andwe certainly had a great time helping out.

had was much greater than we could have everanticipated; we sold our products in school fairs, artshows, and we were the first group from Hutchie to eversell at the teenage market in Silverburn. Furthermore, wewere keen to learn more about running a businessoutside of school, and conversed with a professional inbusiness management, who gave us tips on how to run asuccessful business. Overall, it was an amazingopportunity and great fun for both the group and the linkteachers- I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking togo into business, or is just creative.

As you know, entering high school can be an extremelydaunting experience so being a buddy to the newer pupilsof the school has been a highly rewarding experience forthe S6. We have used our own previous experience to aidthe transition from primary to secondary school and helpthem settle into what can be an overwhelmingenvironment to some. Since being allocated form classes,we have been able to watch the S1 and 2s grow asindividuals and build a strong rapport with the class bygetting to know them. This buddying system has given

Each year the school encourages S6 pupils to get involvedwith local charities. As part of this programme, I have hadthe pleasure of volunteering with the Volunteer TutorsOrganisation (VTO). This charity looks to support theeducation of economically and socially disadvantagedchildren by providing free tuition. Every week a group of

VTOSixth year pupils go to local schools to support homeworkgroups provided by the charity. There we help with anyhomework pupils may have, practise reading with themand play educational games.It has been a very rewardingexperience that we all have greatly enjoyed.

House Overview

Last year, we launched the updated House Systemwithin the senior school. The new system addedrecognition for participation in all areas of theschool – Music, Drama and Debating to name but

a few. The updated House system also gives pupils thechance to earn points for their efforts in volunteering andthrough their actions which uphold the school ethos andvalues. Each House has four 6th year House Captains and aHead of House from our teaching staff. Congratulations inthe inaugural year go to the overall winners, Stuart House.

In 2018-19, the competition was closely fought throughoutthe school year with the lead changing hand several times.Stuart who appeared favourite around Easter, managed tobolster their lead in the S1 fitness challenge and throughparticipation in the school show. In June we saw the Houseseal their victory after overcoming a strong Montroseperformance at sports day.

This year, Pupils were able to track their individual pointsand their House position through our new interactive Pointspage, accessed via Firefly. This year, we have added a new

category for “Extra-Curricular Excellence” to be awardedto pupils who have shown extraordinary commitment topursuits outside of their studies. Pupils can be awardedpoints under this category if they are selected to playsport, perform music, or pursue artistic success at anational level.

With the move to distance learning and working fromhome, our House Competition also moved online. Throughthe House Firefly page, pupils were able to earn points byparticipating in weekly challenges and keep up to datewith everything House on the blog page. We saw manypupils enjoying fun activities in the sunshine and creatingsome wonderful art.

With one month to go (at the time of writing) until thecompetition ends, the current points are exceedingly closewith Montrose out in front by 20 and looking to push forthe victory, they narrowly missed last year. We lookforward to revealing our winners and celebrating theirsuccess in August.

As the Stuart house captains, we were optimistic wewould continue our winning streak from last year. As partof our previous win, we helped organise a party for thehouse where we had cake and played Kahoot, helping usbond as a house.

In order to receive points, pupils are able to do a variety oftasks all of which show commitment to the school suchas taking parents around the school for tours and regularlyattending clubs. We were able to help at events such as‘keepy uppy’ and house basketball where we encouragedmembers of our house and got the opportunity to playourselves. Furthermore, we were also able to help atevents with the primary school such as the cross country.

The house assemblies also helped our house get to knoweach other through activities such as poster making andquizzes. As head of house, Mr Ferguson, helped usimmensely and always ensured that everyone was havingfun and engaging in the events.

Overall, we found being house captains incredibly fun andwere given so many opportunities to talk to people wemay not know otherwise.

Well done to all Argyll pupils who attended house eventsand competed for points! It was enjoyable seeing somany of you at the events. S1 and S2 boys wereparticularly good at turning out in numbers to sportsevents. There was great skill and enthusiasm on show atHouse basketball and Heady Handball. Thank you to theS6 House Captains for making these events run smoothly.Georgie and April brought dancing, music and fun, whileVasit brough his cool and calm organisation skills. TheHouse Captains were well supported by their S6classmates. Callum and Megan were always keen toattend competitions and lend a hand at house assemblies.

House assemblies this year were great fun. There werequizzes, doughnuts and lots of motivational chat. Argyllhosted the Keepy Uppy Challenge. It was great to see somany pupils across all year groups and houses focussedon breaking the record. Argyll pupils worked hard acrossthe board picking up points for, volunteering, music,sports teams and charity events.

When school closed due to Covid, Argyll continued torepresent their house well. We received many excellentphotos for the ‘Picture This Competition’, pupils displayedrainbows in their windows to thank the NHS and pupilstook part in another Keepy Uppy Challenge. Zara andAliah used their hockey skills to great effect there. Welldone to all in Argyll and thank you for all your efforts.

LochielWe are all extremely proud of the enthusiasm, effort andenergy that went into every house event.

The broadening of the new House point system has beenan eye-opener to the diverse range of skills of Lochielhouse members. Whether it be scoring a 3-pointer duringHouse basketball, sailing through House quizzes, orcracking a tricky cryptography puzzle, Lochiel pupils haveexhibited their many phenomenal talents.

We have had some fun and memorable moments duringHouse assemblies as well. It was particularly enjoyablewatching several Lochiel pupils struggle to fit themselvesinto a tiny square made of cones, accompanied by EuanMorgan’s (S6) delightful piano melodies.

Special mention must go to Miss Griggs, without whomLochiel would lack the organisation and motivation to keepus ahead of the game. We hope we can end the term asstrongly as we started, and everyone continues to enjoythe upcoming challenges.

We are so proud of the success that Montrose has hadthis year, and the determination shown across all yeargroups in our House Competitions.

We are currently top of the leader board in terms ofHouse points, which is a testament to the hard workwhich has been put in throughout the year. Withenthusiastic involvement in special events such as the“Keepy Uppy” Challenge and Heady Handballtournaments, we secured ourselves the most points forevent participation. Furthermore, we held the top spot forSports involvement this season – something us HouseCaptains are extremely proud of.

Montrose have also picked up points in other areas of theschool. For example, members have helped out as tour-guides, and shown regular participation in drama showsand charity events, showing the versatility of our House.Also, a big thank you to our Head of House, Ms McGlynn,for keeping us House Captains on track, as well as MrMcMullan for all his hard work guiding us through theyear!

In our current social climate, the power of languagefor both good and for evil has never been morepoignant. Set in Nazi Germany, The Book Thiefserves to demonstrate both the destructive and

recuperative nature of words. Whilst Hitler uses languageto cultivate fear and hatred, Liesel uses it as a tool ofempowerment, connecting her to those she loves. TheBook Thief reminds us of the power of language, for goodor for evil, to connect or to ostracise. It is for this reasonthat I believe it to be ‘amongst the best that is known orthought.’

Perhaps the most notable use of language is the way inwhich it is used by the novel’s narrator, Death. Whilstmany novels have been written to shed a light onto thechild’s perspective of tragedy, ‘The Book Thief’s centralconcern is not with a child fleeing Hitler but with the life ofa seemingly ordinary German. It is not Liesel’s voice thatnarrates the novel but Death’s. It is this unusualperspective that sets the book apart to be one of the bestthat is known or thought. In most literature, Death ispresented as a menacing and frightening character, but,unlike his sickle wielding counterpart, Zusak’s Death isinverted and presented as someone humane, morehumane in fact than many of the characters in the novel.Death is amused by our version of him; he claims that ourcaricature of death is, first and foremost, a mirror image ofthe vilest aspects of our own countenance. The mosthorrible images of death are subconsciously based uponthe human characteristics we believe to be most ugly –we too are death but by using language to conjure ‘skulllike facial features’ we attempt to distance death from itspainful reality.

Far from being a novel of war and suffering, it is in fact anovel filled with incredible beauty, love and hope. Beautyin the novel lies not in the recuperative nature of the actsof kindness and compassion committed but in thenarrator’s own lyrical control of language, language thatlulls and soothes, even while articulating horror:

“Snowflakes of ash fell so lovelily you were tempted tostretch out your tongue to catch them, taste them. Onlythey would have scorched your lips. They would havecooked your mouth.”

The horror of genocide collides with the innocence of thechildhood pastime of catching snowflakes; the realities ofwar intrude on childhood, reinforcing that Liesel’s

childhood has been stolen by war. The illustrativejuxtaposition of snow that burns, rather than cools, withflakes that have the capacity to destroy flesh is yetanother example of Zusak’s skill with inversion. The readeris left haunted by a seemingly innocuous image,demonstrating the power of language to turn an otherwiseidyllic childhood memory into a horrifying one.

Zusak manipulates language and images to stun andhorrify the reader but he also uses it to sooth. It is thebasement of the Hubermann’s little house on HimmelStreet that is the most important location for languagethat reconciles, soothes and beautifies in the novel.Perhaps this subverts the traditional associations we havewith basements in literature, where one might think of thespeakeasy where Gatsby and Nick encounter Wolfsheim,and his cuffs of human molars. Zusak suggests, thatanywhere, even somewhere that is typically labelled astreacherous, can be transformed into something beautifulby the power of language. Far from being a place oflurking fears and oppressive forces the basement isliberating. It is the only place in the novel where languagenurtures – and is nurtured. The place where words are notonly consumed but produced. It is where those who haveno power are empowered. The basement is where wordsand people can seek refuge from Hitler’s campaign ofterror.

For Liesel the basement is her refuge – both figurativelyand later, literally. First and foremost, she is empowered inthe basement for it is where Hans teaches her to read:

“Papa would say a word and the girl would have to spell italoud and then paint it on the wall, as long as she got itright. After a month, the wall was recoated. A freshcement page.”

Without language, people are powerless. When Lieselarrives on Himmel street she is illiterate. This results inridicule from both her peers and her teachers. In anattempt to overcome this, Liesel tries to gain power bystarting fights with boys in her class. However, her feelingof powerlessness only dissipates when she learns to read.Liesel’s understanding of the power of language is madeclear in the ‘WORD SHAKER’ a story made by Max as apresent for Liesel:

“She knew how powerless a person could be WITHOUTwords.”

Max’s story the ‘WORD SHAKER’ is a fable in whichthe Führer grows forests throughout Germany by plantingwords, just as one might with seeds. These words growto tall trees provided that they are tended to with hatred,fear and lies. Language is organic. It is alive. It is a forcefor both good and bad and therefore it must be carefullytended. The word shaker grows a tree from her tears afterher friend, a man despised by the Fuhrer, falls ill. Her treeis watered with compassion and empathy proving thatlanguage that cares and nurtures is more powerful thanwords of hatred. The Führer is angered by this and ordersthe tree to be cut down but no one is able to do it with thegirl still there. When the girl eventually does leave it fallsdown, bringing down other trees with it. The fabledemonstrates the power of language to spread andcultivate fear and hatred but also its power to heal andrecuperate. Zusak’s own language reinforces the idea thatthe world can be shaped and shaken by the power oflanguage.

Max spends his long days in the basement dreaming,storytelling.

“In the blue corner,” he quietly commentated, “we havethe champion of the world, the Aryan masterpiece—theFuhrer.” He breathed and turned. “And in the red corner,we have the Jewish, rat-faced challenger—MaxVandenburg.”

Max’s allegory is a metaphorical understanding of hisreality. Even in his daydream it is Hitler who wins thebattle – not by strength or by wits but by inspiring thecrowd with his language and rhetoric. It is only then thatMax feels ‘the fists of an entire nation’. This is somethingthat Liesel herself realises, commenting “Without words,the Führer is nothing”. Max feels powerless, even in hisown mind – demonstrating the extraordinary power ofwords and their ability to destroy. Max’s daydreammicrocosmically suggests the enormous power of Nazirhetoric and sloganizing – the power of language tobelittle, subjugate, manipulate and ultimately destroy.

The Book Thief brings home an important message; thepower of language. It is a message that we, as a society,seem to be forgetting but are acutely reminded of uponreading the Book Thief. Whether that be through Death’sability to manipulate events and turn the ugly into thebeautiful, Hitler’s ability to cultivate hatred through hisrhetoric or finally Liesel who uses language to find powerand connect with others. All remind us of language’spower and for this reason I believe it to be ‘amongst thebest that is known or thought.’

I walked aimlessly as always, unaware and uncaring ofwhere my feet led me until a crunch of wood underfootsnapped me back to the present. I’d broken off a bleachedbranch from a trunk of driftwood. Tangled between thesmaller branches at the top of the trunk was a lump ofcotton, dried out by the sun. It was a dressing gown. Thethin type that you would freeze to death in during winter.The gown reminded me of one I was very familiar with.

Whilst this gown was cotton, my mum’s was silk. She hadbought it a week after we arrived at my aunt’s house in TelAviv. She’d said her fleece one was far too hot to getthrough a summer in . That night, a lazy one I remember,we had eaten and it was late. We were scatteredeverywhere: my sister and I out for a late night swim, myaunty in the hammock, falling asleep to the rhythm of thecicadas, my mum in the shower. The sirens alwaysseemed to go off at the most unexpected times. TheSummer Conflict felt like it had come out of nowhere andeven the locals weren’t used to dealing with sirens.

ConnectionsMy sister and I got there first, still dripping wet in ourswimming costumes. Past the pantry, through the steeldoor leading to the bomb shelter. The neighbours fromour building were already there. Silent, pale, waiting. Myaunty came barrelling in next, pulling the dog by its collar.And then my mum, her flowing gown streaming after her,her wet hair hanging out of a sloppy turban. Relief.

My mum sat down across from me and I watched as thesleeve of her dressing gown caught against the roughcast wall. It ripped all the way from the cuff to the elbow.

Every summer holiday after that, my mum always tookthat torn dressing gown with her. She never did replace orrepair it. Maybe she kept it as her lucky charm, or areminder of our adventures? I’d never got round to askingher, but that is how I remember her: rushing around in themorning sunshine with that flapping, ripped sleeve.

First the scouts go, then it is our turn. Our turn to die, tosurvive then die later. All we men were sent here to die.Because commonwealth lives don’t matter.

We wait apprehensively for the whistle to blow, to signalthe last few minutes of our lives. Most people are silent,or are murmuring silent prayers to the ones up above,hoping at best for a quick death. Others are talking to eachother, saying foreign words in a foreign tongue. We are allmen forced to come here to serve a country that is notour own and to fight in a war that has nothing to do withus. I see one man nibbling at his filthy nails like afrightened child. He has only six fingers left, the other fourbloody stumps are black and dark red where the blood hasclotted and where the wound has given in to disease.When he is not nibbling, he uses his nails to pick off somegrey maggots that make a meal of his stumps.

I feel something scurry across my bare foot. I glancedown and see a huge, fat, black rat scavenging about foranything to sink its fangs into. There are almost as manyrats here as there are men. These rats are massive –about the size of a small cat, they are fearless beasts thatwould consume anything it can find. With them they bringeven more fleas and maggots. We already have the fearof having a shell dumped on us, or being overrun by theenemy, and on top of that we have rampant diseases thathinder our ability to fight, and a rapidly dwindling foodsupply. Unlike these rats, we are unable to eat anythingand everything.

A sudden thought of my mother goes into my mind. I donot remember much of what she looked like, but Iremember that when I was younger, me and my sisterused to get into violent fights a lot – I fail to remember thereasons why - but whenever we did, I used to regretcalling her cruel name and pulling her little chotee, mymother used to say that my sister also felt bad namecalling me and punching me, and that if we did not likefighting with each other, then we should stop fighting. Ohmaathaji! If you could see the world now! I know thepolitics are too complicated for this to happen, but I justwish that everyone would one day stop fighting, andrealise that endless killing and standstill fighting ispointless as we won’t ever get anywhere if all we do is killand fight with one another. As a soldier I know.

Watching, listening, still as the scorching sun. Waitingreluctantly for the inevitable. I look to my right - I seethe bodies of my fallen allies, some lying on the dustyground, unconscious and ignorant of the painful truththat there is little hope for them. I see my friends onthe ground who will never see their families again or bewelcomed home by their companions when the war isover. I hear a loud bang from behind me far in thedistance. We all look over towards the sound but seenothing. We have become used to these suddendisturbances. My friends – some crying, some justwatching, and those crumpled on the floor tooexhausted to go on, just as neglected and forgotton asour dreams in life, goals that may well never becompleted or fulfilled … Time seems to be standingstill, as motionless as those lying defeated surroundingme. A frozen world, shrouded in destruction anddevastation.

I stand hunched over my last distant memory of a lifewithout worry or fear; a picture of me and my family,the paper torn and dirty like most of the things I havecome to know in the ruthless trenches, but it’s the lastpart of my home I fear I will ever see and so I treasurethis tattered photograph as I remember my past life Itook so for granted. Memories of a past I have beenforced to leave behind me are rushing back, like thewhistling wind on a hot day.

My heart is beating in my ears like the thunderousbombs that are now getting closer. The last I can hearfrom another person is the mutter of a silent prayer anda few scratchy coughs in the middle of the eeriesilence. This is it. Every thought that had been dancingaround my mind – my family and memories, my friendslaying ready behind me, the pain I feel in every bone inmy body. the rapidly approaching gunshots, thescorching sun, the knowledge that this may be my finalfew minutes or the start of a lifetime journey from afterthe war. All the things that matter suddenly don’t. Idon’t want to think anymore. I don’t want to put myselfthrough this torture. I need to focus. And I am ready.

And then the whistle blows.

As I strolled among the bluebellsthe sun shone down on meand wrapped her arm around my back.

It has been an exciting year for the musical theatre club.We have enjoyed dancing, singing and acting. This yearwe were meant to put on the our production of Matildabut unfortunately we were not quite able to do it due tolockdown but hopefully we can do one just as good nextyear!

We have not only done Matilda, we have done Shrek,Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bearsand some others to. I have thoroughly enjoyed musicaltheatre and glad I sighed up to go!

I would like to thank Mrs Porter and Miss Cohen for theirhelp and hard work for Musical theatre and for teaching usthe songs, dances and helping us get into character withthe script.

Hamish the Horror is possibly the naughtiest dog to everlive. I was four years old when my parents brought homea fluffy little bundle of fur. He was so tiny with big browneyes and a short stubby tail that was always wagging.

But before we knew it, Hamish the Horror was up tomischief. After only two weeks, he had managed to openthe paint pots in our playroom and tap danced across thehall with multicoloured paws. “Hamish!” shouted mymum. “Hamish!” shouted my dad and my sister and Ilaughed.

He grew and grew and now he is a monster sized ball ofenergy and chaos! I don’t like being in trouble much and Idon’t like being naughty. Hamish tries to be good like mebut he isn’t very successful. He’s like my sister and can’thelp but have fun! When he was a puppy, Aurora dyed hisfur pink while my nanny was helping me get ready forkindergarten. My mum was not happy at all when she gothome from Germany.

Hamish is super fast when he runs. I love to run too butnot so much when I have to chase him! He can almostcatch our biggest dog, Marley. He loves to play fetch buthe doesn’t like to give the ball back.

On his first birthday we were at my gran’s house inCayman and there were fireworks that lit up the sky. Ithought it was for Hamish’s birthday but it turned out thatit was also Independence Day. It was probably just as well

Adventures with my petthat the fireworks weren’t for Hamish. He really, really,really doesn’t like fireworks. They make him hide undermy mum’s bed. This is a problem because he’s notallowed upstairs.

Hamish has fur that is as white as snow when it’s cleanbut he loves to raid the bin for leftovers and is usuallycovered in tomato soup, which makes his fur a weirdshade of orange. We even bought new bins withautomatic lids but he’s a very clever dog and he’s learnedto wave his paw and open the bin. He can also open doorsbut much like me, he’s not so good at closing thembehind him.

The worst thing Hamish has ever done was slip out of thefront garden when my dad was working on his bike.Hamish the horror dashed across the road, heading to thenearby park but our other dog Rollo chased him. Rollo isnearly twelve and not so fast and he was hit by a car.Luckily Rollo was not badly hurt or my mum might havebeen extremely angry with Dad and Hamish the Horror.

While my mum shouts at Hamish a lot, we all love himvery much. He is like sunshine and it’s hard not to behappy when he’s around (as long as he’s not caked incrumbs or soaking from swimming in the pond). We haveso many adventures together and I can’t wait to see whathappens next with Hamish the Horror. He’s never dull!

I have been on many holidays,But have a favourite one.It’s not America, nor Australia.But Japan, that’s the one.

I have visited many places,And ranked them out of ten.Only Japan has reached the highest mark,Which no other country could ever gain.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, I visited them all,Each and every one great – I had a ball.All very different and difficult to compare,But still had similarities, which they could all share.

Tokyo was busy and had many, many shops,We went up Tokyo Tower; were several views from the top.Shibuya Crossing, congested and crowded,Several Starbucks surrounded.

My HolidaysKyoto – all about culture, we spectated some Geishadancers,They twirled around, moved up and down; were superbprancers Ate several pieces of sushi, very yummy,Each bite filled with pleasure, filled up my tummy.

Hakone was up a mountain; we went mainly for the Onsen,A pool of boiling water, so shallow you couldn’t drown in!We went on a spectacular boat ride,And afterwards I was filled with delight.

So that was my favourite holiday, doesn’t it sound like fun?I went to three different places; it was like a three in one!If you’ve still to arrange your next holiday,Japan should be top of the list! Just book, don’t delay!

The big day had finally arrived. The courtyard was allset, everybody was busy and Peyton was grooming thehorses with the help of her dad. Meanwhile, the threeknights who were competing were getting extra specialtraining for the joust. It was time. The courtyard waspacked with people and Peyton had been appointed toget each knight their horse. Excitedly, Peyton dashedinside to get the first two knights. But they got easilydefeated in no time. However, when Peyton went in toget the third knight, she noticed that he was hurt andhad a bite on his elbow. Instantly, she noticed that itwas a horse bite! For a minute, Peyton had no clue whatto do. But she knew that someone had to lead theirarmy so she asked the knight if she could borrow hisarmour. He said, “Yes, it’s for a good cause. We have had so much fun reading with P2G this year.We meet most Friday afternoons, usually in ourclassroom, to read different kinds of books. To startwith, we were focusing on finding words with theirspelling rules but, as the year went on, we started toscan for words and look for nouns and adjectives. Wealso spent a few weeks reading National GeographicKids which is non-fiction and has some amazing facts.We learned loads and had fun doing it. If the weatherwas nice, we even got to read outside!

In Primary 7, I noticed that lots of children throughout theschool were using single use plastic bottles.

I had the idea to produce school water bottles. It took lotsof research to find the best ones but in the end I did. Thewater bottles were 30% recycled plastic, leak proof andhad a space for your name.

I sold them at the 2019 Christmas Fair; we had bought200 bottles and sold around 120 that day and raised £550and by January we had sold every bottle.

The money raised bought new recycling bins for theplayground. At our Eco-committee meeting we looked atlots of bins and I got the final decision. I am very happywith our choice.

I was thrilled with the response and that lots of peopleliked them.

We were given a challenge to create as much frictionas we could on a sheet of card so that a marble wouldtake as long as possible to travel from the top to thebottom if it was at a slight angle.

The ECO Committee had an interesting visit to thePolmadie Recycling Center. We saw the blue S.M.I.R.Frecycling machine and how all the items get separatedinto piles of plastic, paper, metal and food. The plasticwas squashed into bricks and sold to be made intoschool blazers, fleeces and garden furniture. The foodwaste got mixed with water and fed to millions ofmicro organisms which ate it and produced lots ofgas! This gas was made into electricity and poweredthe site and some homes in Glasgow. The leftover bitsthat were not recyclable were made into an ash likesubstance which can be used in making roads. Theheat energy created to do this made electricity too.One of our favourite parts of the visit was seeing Pol,the Polmadie horse sculpture, made out of left-overnon-recyclable objects, some of which were very

This year, the P.4-7 FairtradeCommittee has been working veryhard to make a little animated movieto explain to everyone what Fairtradeis and why you should always chooseFairtrade products in the shops if youcan. When we first started planningthe project, Mrs Buchan split thecommittee into groups to write ascript for the movie and work outstory boards. Then we were joined byMrs Breckenridge from the ArtDepartment at Beaton Road andJoanna Susskind who is a formerpupil and owns Toad’s Caravan onPollokshaws Road. She is a real lifeanimator! We applied for a grant fromthe Scottish Fairtrade Forum to helpus fund our work. Joanna helpededit the script, and then we wereready to start animating.

Filming the animation took two wholedays. Mrs Breckenridge was a bighelp making all the props and Joannaadded the music and turned it into anactual movie! On the first day we

started to learn about stop motionand made lots of the scenes andcharacters from fabric and paper. Onthe second day we started filming afew of the scenes and, in the blink ofan eye, it was finished! After sharing

our ideas, we decided to call themovie A Fair Tale, as suggested byLily Hopkins in P.4B. We learnt a lotabout Fair Trade and how much itaffects farmers in developingcountries and their families. We toldthe story of a little girl called Emilywho lives in Ghana with her family ofcocoa bean farmers. We tried toshow how their lives changed whenthey got involved with Fairtrade sothat they are now paid fairly for theircrops and hard work and Emily cango to school instead of having to helpout on the farm. When you buysomething carrying the Fairtrade logoyou are helping a farmer who needsthe money to look after himself andhis family. We spent a whole afternoon dropping parachutesfrom the balcony. It was so much fun and wediscovered that, if you make three parachutes thatare almost the same but with one difference, it canbe a fair test. Some of our parachutes were reallygood but some just dropped too quickly. I wouldn’twant to have one like that if I jumped out of anaeroplane!

The grass sparkled in the sunlight. Ben spotted a nestwith a robin feeding her newborn chicks in the branchesof the frosty trees. He made his way through the schoolgates. He was worried.

First was art, Ben’s favourite class of the week. He ran tohis seat, eager to get to work on his self-portrait. Halfwaythrough the lesson, he left his seat to get more paint.When he came back, Ben noticed someone had changedhis painting. There was a huge bump sketched onto hisback. The two boys sitting next to Ben shuffled away fromhim. They gave him a hard stare. Ben’s face fell.

Later on, the bell for break-time rang out. The doors burstopen and a crowd full of kids came tumbling out. Benplodded out last and sat down on a wet bench all byhimself. He spotted a boy nearby who looked like heneeded a friend. Ben ran over to him and introducedhimself. The boy glared at him and snapped, “Why areyou such a hunchback?” Ben stopped smiling and lookeddown.

When the children made their way downstairs to theassembly hall, Ben sneaked off to the last row because hedidn’t want anyone to notice his back. On his way, a boywearing glasses sneered at him and called out, “Hey,Notre-Dame! How’s it going?” Ben blushed cherry red.Everyone was staring at him.

The Odd One OutTrudging along the path back to his house, Ben saw therobin’s nest again. The robin was looking up into theblustery snow wondering where her chicks had gone. Thenest looked empty. Ben sprinted the rest of the wayhome. His mother was in the kitchen making pasta fordinner. She smiled warmly at him. Ben just gave her a sadlook and went to the bathroom to have a wash. He let outa long sigh. He wanted to be ordinary like all the otherkids. He didn’t want to be the odd one out.

His back started to itch and a few feathers tumbled out ofhis towel. He rolled his shoulders and looked at himself inthe mirror. He thought, do you want to fit in or do youwant to be yourself? He puffed out his chest and he letthe towel drop to the ground. Two magnificent wingsunfolded from his back. They were golden brown and theyglistened in the sun coming in from the window next tohim.

The next morning Ben’s mother opened the door of hisbedroom to help him get ready for school. The room wasempty. The sheets were lying on the floor. The curtainshad fallen off their rails. Feathers danced in the breezefrom the open window. She fell to her knees and hid herface in her hands. She looked out into the cold, blue air.She knew she would never see him again, but he had gotwhat he wanted. Freedom.

The Spring term was progressing, and us primarysevens were all hyper with the rehearsals of our P7show “Sister Act”. Rehearsals were running full

steam ahead and everyone was working their socks off,excitedly preparing for their allocated roles, so it came asa huge shock and disappointment when the schoolclosure was announced. Everyone was trying to staypositive hoping that maybe the show could go ahead,somehow. Everything sort of happened in a blur. Preparingfor home learning became a priority. It felt unreal whenwe were emptying our desks, almost as if it was the endof the school year, it was almost as if I was having aludicrous, surreal dream. But I wasn’t! All I could hear wasthe monotonous voice over and over, like a ringing in myear, coming from the news broadcasts only commentingon one subject that dominated the news, and our lives. Itis strange to think what everything will be like when this isall over and everyone is allowed to meet up with friendsand family that they have only been able to see virtually.This Pandemic has made us all feel so emotional, lost andlonely. It has created a bubble of uncertainty that will stillremain in the air for a while, however we will learn toovercome our fears and burst it. POP!

I think lots of people have had their moments of despairafter having to adjust to these new rules, changes andrestrictions, however there have been many positivechanges too. People have been finding new ways to becreative. The neighbourhoods soon filled with colour asrainbows began to appear in windows in support of theNHS. I also wanted to help out by raising money for the

NHS however couldn’t think of the best way to approachthis. When I heard that there was a shortage of scrubs forthe NHS, I realised the perfect way of helping out. I wasgoing to sew some scrubs, so I set off to work and beganto sew some scrubs and scrub bags and I found myselfreally enjoying it. I saw pictures of staff wearing thescrubs and seeing the smiles on their faces, I decided thatI was going to put in all my effort to make everyone smile.I started by going out onto the pavement in front of myhouse and using my chalks to make an obstacle course forpassersby on their daily walk. To my delight almostimmediately the course begun to attract attention and itwas a joy to watch the children -and even some adults-taking part in the course. Sometimes they would go backto the beginning and do it all again! I had also added anarea for the people who played to write their names andsoon, it was crammed full of names, full to bursting.When the rain came and washed the game away, I madeit my motive to create an even longer course as it wasbeing enjoyed by so many. Daily life has changeddramatically but everyone has been super supportive,helping guide us through and reminding us that there isalways light at the end of the tunnel. I have now foundeven more ways of helping out like baking for the NHSand leaving out chocolates for the bin men and postman,even just joining in with the weekly clap for our carers asit is great to know that every single thing, no matter howbig or small, is making someone happy and now morethan ever that is what everyone needs the most.

Truth is an essential aspect ofeveryday life. As you may know, inmodern-day society people expecttruth from everyone, and it isconsidered a normal human value.Many people today lie for a living,such as magazine writers just for thesake of starting controversy, lawyersfor getting their clients out of stickypickles and people applying for jobs,who sprinkle in a healthy amount ofembellishment so they come out as abetter person. The word for truth inLatin is ‘veritas’ and is also our schoolmotto. The word is a great motto asit promotes honesty and compassionthroughout the school. Veritas wasthe Roman goddess of truthfulness.She was the daughter of Saturn andthe mother of Virtue. Veritas endedup being the name of the virtue oftruthfulness, which is considered tobe one of the main virtues.

Truthfulness also comes up in literacyand folklore such as the very notable“The Boy Who Cried Wolf!” which isabout a boy who lied by shoutingwolf for attention. The people got fedup and when there was an actual

Veritaswolf, they didn’t listen. I myself havehad a few mishaps regardingtruthfulness. There was once asituation where I had got myself intoa physical fight with a boy at myschool. When the depute rectorconfronted us, he lied about thesituation whereas I told the truth. Heended up getting into more troublethan I did as he blatantly lied. Thelesson learned here is that “Honestyis the best Policy”.

The word “veritas” to me meanshonesty and compassion, as if youwere signing an oath of respect. Ipersonally would have more respectand I think others would if they werehonest and told the truth aboutawkward situations. In today’s worldpeople will disregard people if they lieabout everything and would beclassed as untrustworthy and wouldbe less respected. Even the tinythings that overall really aren’t aproblem, if you’re truthful, but if youdo lie the situation could escalate intoa worse situation if you are foundout.

There are times when it is actuallybetter to lie than the truth. Forexample, if somebody may havesome sort of mark or something thatdecreases their attractiveness, youmay not want to tell them that theylook unpleasant as it might hurt theirself-esteem. Another case where it isbad to tell the truth is maybe you andyour spouse have separated youmight not want to say anything toyour child especially if they are goingthrough their teenage years as, fromwhat I’ve heard from my parents andfriends is that that point of your lifecan be quite miserable.

To conclude, truthfulness overall is agood value and if your friends orfamily have it as a common part oftheir personality you should feelgrateful as a lot of modern-daysociety lack this part of life. I myselfhope that one day everybody willhave truth inside them even if itdoesn’t show that often. I am happythat the school I go to hastruthfulness and honesty as one of itskey values.

As each of the four S6 pupils readout the reason for each child to have won, the wholeof the primary school sat in hopeful silence. However,as there can only be one name embroidered on eachcloak each year, the well-deserving four donned theirCloaks of Magnificence to rapturous applause. The

HOUSE

Wednesday is Argyll’s favourite day of the week. Why?Well, because it is our House Day!

It may be Blue but it is filled with games, fun and catchingup with members of Argyll. What is not to like aboutthat!

The House and Vice Captains set it up and we try andmake it as much fun as possible. We get out the toys andgames for everyone to play with. We make sure theInfants can join in and it lets them meet some of the olderJuniors. It’s nice to say “hi” to the Infants in the corridoror playground after. We always make sure everyone feelsincluded.

Lochiel House ReportThe Lochiel House Captains are Logan Johnston andCoco Croxford and the Vice Captains are ChristopherEltringham and Chloe Campbell. We are so proud tohave represented Lochiel this year. As Captains we havehad extra responsibilities to help around the school andrun House activities.

At House assemblies we get to read out who hasreceived bonus points for our House for excelling insomething or doing an act of kindness. We also find outthe latest House scores which always get a cheer as wetry to encourage everyone to go for it and get more pointsfor our House! Our House mistress, Mrs Unkles, is alsoalways on hand to encourage us to do our best. It isdefinitely the greatest house to be part of as everyone isso friendly and we have fun together.

It has been a strange end to the year with the schoolbeing closed due to coronavirus but the housecompetition has continued. At last count we were second,but hopefully we can overtake to be the winners!

Every month, Argyll also meets in its families. Familiesare a group of 5-7 members from the House and musthave a range of ages – just like in a real family. We canreally get to know each other at these meetings.

We really like the House system because it keepseveryone in Argyll connected in a fun, playful way. Andwe are the best colour too!

Stuart House Report

Being part of Montrose is special because we are allunique in our own way and it makes the House evenbetter. We encourage each other and celebrate eachother’s strengths.

We have the best meeting place for our House Meetingsand our House Mascot is Mr Incredible. Montrose Housechose to be in families, this means that all the children inMontrose are in little groups with a P7 high hiedyin incharge. Each family has a range of children from differentyear groups. We love meeting in the library because it’swelcoming and cosy. At most House Meetings we get toplay a game together. There is friendly rivalry between thefamilies. At House meetings we celebrate achievementsand the Quaich is awarded to someone who has goneabove and beyond.

This year Montrose’s House Captains were Olivia Yuilland Nicholas Richmond and our Vice-Captains wereAbeer Khan and Struan Finlayson.

The best thing about being House Captains is interactingwith everyone and making sure everyone is happy. Wegot to interact with the younger children and it made us

Well, it is safe to say that this school year has been filledwith all the usual buzz, competition and excitement as wehave learned to expect at Hutchesons’. However, theSpring and Summer term of 2020 is definitely one thathistory will not forget.

In August 2019 when school resumed after the Summerbreak, we welcomed our new headmaster, Mr Cornfoot.Now he is part of the furniture. The school calendar wasfull to bursting with school trips, rugby and hockeyfixtures, swimming galas and much much more. InDecember the Primary 7’s enjoyed one of the highlights oftheir final year in the Primary school, the Christmas dance.Sarah Nugent of Stuart House wore an impressive dressthat she designed and created by herself.

Early in 2020 saw the school’s annual Hutchie Scots Verseand Music Competition. Surprising us all, Miss Macphail(our retired and much-loved Headmistress) paid us a visitas the head judge. As ever this competition was fiercelyfought by all pupils in P3 - P7 and an impressive numberof Stuart House members made it to the much covetedrow of finalists - Felix Taylor, Sally Bah, Zara Rashid,Myles & April Macaulay to name just a few. Well doneto Myles who won the Music Quaich presented by MrRhodes.

Every year we get set new Mini and Junior Dukechallenges with 7 activities to complete in the school year.Montrosians worked hard this year and earned lots ofpoints for their House.Through all the House Competitions we battled our waythrough and gave the best of our abilities. Even though wedidn’t always come first, Montrosians are proud and nevergive up!

Montrose tried really hard to earn lots of points this year inlots of different ways, using all our different strengths. Weare proud of everyone’s efforts. Well done!

School life changed dramatically in March 2020! We haveovercome a few hurdles in our years at Hutchesons’however this must be one of the most extraordinaryevents in the history of our school. It came as a hugeshock to everyone when it was announced that all schoolsaround the country were to close due to the Pandemic. Atfirst it was a strange sensation with emotional ups anddowns, however over time we have begun to adapt tohome learning and have started to get into the rhythm of itall. Even though we are all apart during these hard times,Hutchesons’ pupils have all found ways to stay connectedand keep our community together. Most impressive wasStuart House’s Zara Rashid who set to work makingscrubs at home for our NHS - well done Zara!

This term has been one that we will never forget andeveryone is yearning for the day that we can go back toschool but for now we must continue to play our part inhelping to stop the virus spreading. We are pleased to saythat everyone is staying active and keeping involved withall of our Stuart House events and lending a helping handto those who need help. We are all super proud ofeveryone and can’t wait to see them again.

This year has seen another large group of children fromHutchie taking on some of the sixty life skills challenges ofcooking dinner for the family or tying knots or budgetingfor their packed lunches or playing their instruments for anaudience. There have been many P2s making toast for thefirst time or P3s packing their bags to go on a long bikeride or P4s picking up litter whilst on a walk and they haveall said how much they enjoyed learning these new skills.

Along with our school this year, there are a further twenty-one schools taking part throughout Britain and twoschools in Dubai! Altogether, that is over 2500 childrentaking on the Mini and Junior Duke challenges this year.

All very exciting but that meant printing a LOT of bookletswhich meant a LOT of paper so, to replace the 50 treesused in the printing, we made sure to give the WoodlandTrust enough money to replant those trees and more.

During lockdown, many of the challenges had to berewritten but it has been encouraging to see so manychildren from P2 to P7 updating the school platform withtheir photos and self-assessments showing that they areusing their time wisely to continue to learn new skills.

MUSIC

The music department continues to be a busy, excitingplace to be in the mornings, school intervals and after-school. There are many ensembles, choirs and theatregroups to choose from, with an abundance ofperformance opportunities throughout the year.

This year the primary department prepared performancesfor the Senior Winter Concert, Primary Winter Concert,Music Competition, Music Ambassadors’ Concert and thePrimary Spring Concert which was cancelled last minutedue to a power-cut rather than COVID-19!

Primary Winter Concert:The Primary Winter Concert continues to be a popularspectacle for pupils and parents alike, with the appearanceof the famous and world renowned ‘Special Guest’.Thisyear we had performances from the Primary Choirs(Junior Chorus and P4), Junior Strings, Junior Wind Band,Junior Jazz Band, Senior Jazz Quartet and the PrimaryOrchestra. The relaxed atmosphere and presence ofChristmas jumpers and party games such as pass theparcel makes this event an enjoyable festive concert for allthe family.

Music Department at Kingarth StreetMusic Ambassadors’ Concert:Our Music Ambassadors performed in their own recitalconcert in February 2020. Each musician prepared a piecefor a small audience of friendly parents and staff. Each andevery performer showed confidence and enjoyment whenperforming, and a sigh of relief at the end! These pupilshave shown incredible commitment to the musicdepartment, helping our younger musicians, setting agood example at rehearsals, whilst also developing theirown technique on their instruments. Thankyou MusicAmbassadors!

Primary Spring Concert:The Spring Concert that never was, had a wonderfulrehearsal morning prior to what we thought would be anenjoyable and relaxed evening concert! Pupils fromvarious groups including the ukulele ensemble, guitarensemble and choirs gathered together for rehearsals.The Primary Orchestra looked particularly impressive withour newest P3 String players being involved for the firsttime. There was great excitement in anticipation for thisconcert, but unfortunately it was not to be. We hope allour young musicians are practising hard and lookingforward to an event in the future when we can once againmake music together!RP

Every Thursday at Kingarth Street, we have comealong to the music room, with our guitars, ready torehearse. Things can get a little hectic, with peoplegiving into the air of infectious enthusiasm, twangingtheir strings and chattering. I’m unfortunately one ofthe guilty!

The songs we played this year were really fun. Iparticularly enjoyed Billie Jean, but all of the music

Junior Guitar Ensemblewas well chosen. Mr Sim is very patient if we don’timmediately click with the music and is usuallytolerant of the noise when we get a new piece torehearse. I have very much enjoyed performing at theconcerts and am excited about what is in store forGuitar Ensemble in the Senior School.

Jazz band is a lot of fun, and a great way to spend half an hour on a Fridaylunchtime. We have lots of funny moments together, like when I was playingmy saxophone, one of the reed screws fell out! In jazz band the participantsare: Grace Armes (clarinet), Lily Mappin (clarinet), Beth Gambles(saxophone), Livvi Hardwick (trombone), Aneesa Phillips (bassoon),Christopher Eltringham (trumpet), Nikhil Bollapragada (drum-kit), MylesMacaulay (keyboard) and of course Mrs Porter. We enjoyed performing atOpen Day and the Winter Concert and were looking forward to our performingin the Spring Concert. We were going to play Yesterday (by the Beatles) butunfortunately that concert got cancelled because of a huge power cut just aseveryone began arriving. Sometimes if you forget your instrument Mrs Porterwill let you conduct the band which is really good fun and often after concertsthe band have a party with Haribos and games at the next rehearsal. I wouldhighly recommend joining the Jazz Band at Kingarth Street.

Junior Strings is a great place to learn and play funmusic whilst learning to play in an ensemble! A bigthank you to Mrs Porter and Mr Ewart who areexcellent at teaching us! I had a great time learning thepieces we played this year including ‘America’ byLeonard Cohen. We also played pieces like ‘Skipping’and ‘Boys and Girls’. When the full Orchestra cametogether (made up of most of the ensembles), weplayed ‘Have Yourself a Very Merry Little Christmas’and ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, however weunfortunately didn’t get to perform at the SpringConcert due to a power-cut.

Percussion EnsemblePercussion instruments are instruments that you hit, forexample: drums, xylophone, tambourine, etc… There is awide range of different percussion instruments, rangingfrom having a whole drumkit in front of you, to holdingjust two small sticks and tapping them together. Now youmight find that quite useless to just have to tap two stickstogether, however when the whole band is playing, it canhave a great effect.

Percussion ensemble is a group of percussionists playing.For our Primary percussion ensemble, we have thedrums, xylophone, timpani, marimba, tambourine andbongo drums. The tuned players (the players with the

tune), are the xylophone, timpani and marimba. Thedrums, bongo drums and tambourine are there to keepthe beat consistent.

Our percussion teacher is Mr Hyson, and he is veryskilled in many instruments. He conducts our pieces andis a very good teacher. This year, we’ve been practisingthe James Bond theme tune, and when we all playtogether, it sounds great. It does take quite a lot ofpractice however, to get it perfect. To have everyone intime and not mess up, you need to have good dedication.

My name is Blaire and this year I amyour Guitar Music Ambassador,having previously been Vice-Ambassador in Primary 6.

Being Music Ambassador has offeredme many opportunities to perform atvarious school events, includingassemblies and concerts. Myfavourite performance was the sologuitar evening at Beaton Road whereI was proud to represent the primaryschool as the only female sologuitarist.

In addition to performing, the role hasallowed me to showcase the guitarand encourage others to play, learn anew skill or just enjoy music. Youalso gain new experiences in beinginvolved in rehearsals, concert set up,working with younger children andeven gettingMr Sim coffee!!

As an Ambassador it has been agreat experience and one, I wouldhighly recommend. If you’repassionate about music, want to

showcase your instrument,encourage others and have some funI say - ‘Go For It!’.

The music department here at Hutchie are awesome andoffer a wide range of instruments to play, as well assinging.

I play the piano and this year I decided to take up theukulele too. I attend Ukulele Group with a few of myfriends and it is open to Primary Threes all the way up toPrimary Sevens. Miss McGlynn sacrifices her lunch timeevery Monday to take the Ukulele Club and is a superbteacher. She has taught us the simple notes and tunes,

Ukulele Cluband before we knew it, we were playing like professionalswith plectrums.

So far, my favourite tune that we have learned has been‘How far I’ll go’ from ‘Moana’ the well-known Disney film.

Ukulele group is great. I attend every Monday to havesome fun with my friends and to learn a new skill. It fits allages and all abilities, and I highly recommend trying it.

The P6s were over at the senior school for a whole dayand ended up putting on a performance of ‘The Warriors’with the Scottish Opera. We had spent a few weekslearning all of the words to the songs but, on the day, welearned where we were all meant to be on the stage andwhich parts of the story we could really act. It was reallygood fun and lots of our parents came to watch the finalperformance of the day.

The gig this year at ‘Hutchie Live’ was amazing, we all had so much fun and it sounded so good. Thanks, Mr Sim,for such a fun year and I’m sure next year is going to be even better!

Wind band is a lovely group of musical pupils lead byMiss Freeland. Every Monday we get together torehearse a few pieces of music usually for aperformance with our wind instruments e.g.Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Flute etc.Our members range from P5-P7. Wind band is a funplace where we can come and enjoy doing some ofthe things that we love the most. Miss Freeland is anamazing teacher who manages to keep us all undercontrol, I Don’t know how though! I truly enjoy Windband and I know that everyone else enjoys it too.

It is very sad that our Internationalists havebeen deprived of the opportunity to representScotland since the lockdown. The periodbetween March and the summer is the timewhen many of the events would have takenplace. For example, the International CrossCountry event was scheduled for theSaturday after we locked down – howdisappointing for Julia, Zoe, Alasdair andAlexander! To achieve selection for Scotlandis an outstanding testimony to the skill, abilityand dedication of these individuals. All of usat Hutchie are incredibly proud of theirachievements and look forward to followingtheir future successes.

Rugby Season 2019/20

Back in August, the season started off in gloriousconditions and we played almost all scheduledfixtures up to the winter break. However, asseems to be the norm nowadays, Term 2

fixtures took a bit of a hit. The ground staff at Auldhousedid a tremendous job ensuring that our home pitcheswere almost always playable but away games were oftencancelled due to frost or waterlogged pitches. Frustrating,but it’s testament to all our players that their commitmentand motivation didn’t falter, and they continued to train ashard as always through sometimes abysmal conditions.

Like the last four seasons, the Scottish Schools’Conferences created tough, competitive inter-schoolfixtures where results mattered, and points were at stake.All our squads fought hard in each game, recordingexcellent victories against local rivals and taking valuablepoints to add to the whole school league table.

The 1st XV have had a long, successful but frustratingseason, with many highs and lows. This started back inJuly where we toured South Africa for pre-season. Thiswas our largest trip to date, and we had two full playing

squads ready to take on our South African opposition. Wewere unfortunately on the wrong side of the resultsagainst each of the three schools we played, but this wassomething that we knew would help develop resiliencebefore the season started. The tour was not all aboutrugby and the pupils were able to enjoy several activitiesand sightseeing opportunities in addition to their rugbycommitments. The tour developed a positive culture, astrong team dynamic and a robust team ethic – and thedesire to work harder than all our opponents. Withoutdoubt, this helped the boys achieve the success theyknew they were capable of.

The 1st XV had an encouraging season with much to beproud of, but there were challenging spells too. Apredominantly S6 squad, bolstered by a handful oftalented S5 pupils, saw the them compete valiantly ineach of our Conference fixtures. We unfortunately pickedup a number of injuries in key positions during this periodand this meant personnel often playing out of position.The squad gained great success by qualifying for theScottish School’s Bowl Final, which was scheduled to beplayed at the Oriam at Heriot Watt University. Ouropposition on the day was a combined Hawick/Jedburghsquad who we had never played before. We lost thisfixture in controversial fashion 12 -17 but the players gavetheir all. It was a great outing and an experience I’m surethey will remember for years to come. Special mentionmust go to our Captain, Alex Marshall (S6) who led byexample every week and would quite often pop up toscore a crucial match winning try. Alex Hyman (S6),Calum Taylor (S6) and Stan Hickey (S6) wereexceptional all year and Gregor Adams (S5) and OscarLonergan-Black (S5) had great seasons in their first yearof U18 rugby. A special mention must go to Ian King (S5)who unfortunately had to hang up his rugby boots duringthe season for health reasons but his commitment tosupporting, motivating and encouraging the team was keyto our success.

The U16 XV also had a very positive season. Despite asecond-round loss to St Aloysius’ College in the NationalCup Competition, they produced a tight home victoryagainst George Heriot’s in the Shield, winning 7-5.Unfortunately, they came up short in a very entertainingfinal against Dunbar Grammar School. This was a greatexperience for this young squad, and I am excited to seehow this motivates them for future success. A number ofplayers have already shown in training that they have therequired physicality and skills to step up to the 1st XV nextseason and they should mount a real challenge next yearat senior level.

The U15 squad have had a successful season recordingsome excellent results – most notably scoring 50+ pointsagainst local rivals, The Glasgow Academy and The HighSchool of Glasgow. They play a very enjoyable brand of

rugby and have improved hugely throughout the season.The hard work starts now for next year and the step up toU16 rugby. The U14 squad also had an excellent season –with 248 points for, conceding only 149. The squad alsohad their first taste of strength and conditioning, whichwill continue next year in preparation for U15 rugby. TheU13 squad had an enjoyable season and demonstrated agreat desire to improve weekly. They are currentlyunbeaten in 2020 and are desperately looking forward torugby returning soon.

The Primary 7 team have also been exceptional all year.Their contact skills are ferocious, their ability to identifyspace and pass the ball has improved weekly, and theyare now starting to look at set piece plays. Their teamstats talk for themselves – played 15, won 14. This is atremendous record and one I hope they will keep workinghard to repeat in S1. Primary 6 also performed well in theirfirst inter-school season, scoring 90 tries in thirteenfixtures. Several of our Primary 5 boys have also had theirfirst taste of competitive rugby when they representedHutchie in a fixture against George Heriot’s earlier in theseason – this fixture was a great success.

We were also planning our inaugural Hutchie U15 girls’touch rugby festival this March but unfortunately due tothe global pandemic, this was cancelled. I am excitedabout this prospect so hopefully we will be in a position torun the festival next year.

Once again, to all in the Hutchie Rugby community –pupils, staff, referees, parents and supporters – thank youfor your support, commitment and perseverance througha long but enjoyable season!

The 1st XV rugby season began in Cape Town,South Africa for a pre-season tour. In addition toall the team building activities and the sightseeingopportunities, we were very fortunate to play

against three local schools. These teams were all vastlydifferent – first one large and physical, the secondproducing an evenly matched game, with the final teamfast and skilful. This put some pressure on us, because wehad to adapt to the different styles of play. Although theresults did not go the way we wanted, we learned a hugeamount, and we got to try out several differentcombinations and set piece moves. More importantly, thistrip gave us confidence and we looked forward to the startof the school season.

The whole team played consistently well all season and wemanaged to get into the Scottish Schools Bowl Final whichwas played at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. We cameup against a strong Hawick/Jedburgh combined team. Weknew they were going to be physical, but we were lookingforward to the contest. Unfortunately, we narrowly lost thisgame in controversial fashion but there were several standout performances - Alistair McGilvray (S6) carried ball

strongly throughout the game, Alex Hyman (S6) was aconstant nuisance in the rucks, disrupting the oppositionball, and Steven Slater (S6) gave a masterclass on spinningout of tackles. Although we were all disappointed, we stillmanaged to keep our heads held high for the remaininggames and got some great results. Some of the highlightsof the season were our games against Edinburgh Academy,Glasgow Academy and in our semi-final against Jordanhill atBraidholm.

At the end of the 15-a-side season, we managed to play inthree 7-a-side tournaments – the Hutchie 7s, High School ofGlasgow 7s and a 7s Festival. Unfortunately, thecoronavirus brought a very abrupt end to our season and wewere not able to play in the last two festivals.

On behalf of all the team, I would like to thank all of ourcoaches but especially Mr Sorbie and Mr Dewar for all theirsupport and help throughout our last two seasonsrepresenting Hutchie. We all have very fond memories ofrunning out at Auldhouse – and I am sure that we will beback to support the school in the future.

Alex Marshall (S6)

The U16 season started out well, with a five-game winning streak against some decent opposition.Over these first few games, we started our campaign inthe Scottish Shield competition with a very convincingwin against Marr College at home, beating them 41-5 inthe quarter final. We then went on to play a good butvery tough game against George Heriot’s in the semi-final, winning 7-5 due to some outstanding defensivework from our team. This result meant we werethrough to the final, which we played at Heriot-WattUniversity but sadly lost. This was disappointing – thewhole team had worked extremely hard in preparation

U16 Rugbyfor the Final, but we accepted the result and movedforward well. We played a few more tough games andthen one 7s tournament, where we performedwell. Overall, I feel as though the team came togetherand adjusted quickly to senior rugby training. Theyounger S5 players that joined our U16 squadfitted into the team easily and contributed greatly to ourseason. We would like to thank Mr Dewar and MrSorbie for all their help and guidance this year and weare already looking forward to the new challenges thatnext year will present us.

This year our team has improved substantially,winning nine of our thirteen games under thecoaching supervision of Mr Blackhall and Mr Sorbie.Our physicality has improved with a faster line speedand we are more eager to make big hits and counterruck. Our handling has developed with moreawareness of where the space is on the pitch andhow to get the ball there; our support work andoffloading is amazing. The biggest win of the seasonwas against George Heriot’s at home, where we beat

This year’s U13 rugby season has been a greatexperience for us all. We have learned more aboutthe game, each other and our strengths. Thehighlight was our win against St Al’s and that wehave been unbeaten since Christmas. We couldn’t

Thanks to ourstrength and conditioning coach, Mr Williamson, wehave grown stronger and fitter as a team which hasmade a significant difference on the pitch. Whilefacing obstacles such as challenging weather

conditions, team spirit and positive morale havehelped push us through. As this season comes to anend, our focus and attention turns to theimprovements that need to be made in order for usto continue to develop our game and be ready for thenext season. I would like to thank Mr Lang, MrUprichard and all the other coaches for helping usimprove this season.

Hockey

With 16 girls’ hockey teams and three boys’hockey teams – which included four P7teams – we had once again busy Saturdaymornings, filled with hockey fixtures.

Likewise, following the success of weekend training lastseason, Primary five and six continued to train in numberson a Saturday morning. Pupils have really benefitted fromthis extra session, and we extend our thanks to academicstaff in both the Senior and Junior schools for theirsupport. We couldn’t do it without you.

Towards the end of the season, fixtures were arranged forP6 against a few Glasgow schools, but given the Covid 19crisis, we only managed to play one match againstKelvinside. This was played with much enthusiasm andexcitement, and both schools hugely benefited from theexperience of their first fixture.

This year also saw the introduction of ‘Team of the Week’which named eleven players including one goalkeeperfrom all the teams playing on a Saturday, to celebrateprogress and success. It was a highlight of the week forall – with players eager to see who had made the teameach week.

Mrs McNeill retired this year after 17 and a half years ofservice for the school. We’re thankful we managed to playour own Hutchesons’ 3rd XI tournament, which wasnamed after her, as an acknowledgement of all hercontributions over the year.

Once again, we have boys and girls representing theirdistrict and national teams at various age groups, includingFPs at senior level, and congratulations go to the SeniorBoys’ squad who were announced joint winners of theScottish Bowl after the final was cancelled, again due tothe Covid 19 crisis.

All our players have benefitted from a full season ofstrength and conditioning, and early morning, lunchtimeand after school sessions re now the norm. Again, all ofthese teams training sessions and fixtures are notpossible without the continued support of parents,academic staff, groundsmen, coaches and former pupils.The PE department are very grateful for this support.

Finally, we wish all those leaving Hutchie the very best forthe future, and hope they continue playing and enjoyinghockey.

2019-2020 has been a whirlwind – on and off the pitch.The main focus for this year was to develop ourunderstanding of the hockey game but also our fellowplayers. In the first round of the Scottish Cup, wetravelled to Morrison’s Academy in Crieff to play anunknown team. We had a large squad of 18 whichallowed for the younger players to experience thepressures of a Cup match. The squad played some fastattacking moves and won 2-0, with goals Megan Baillie(S6) and Lucy Anderson (S5).

We then played Galashiels Academy, again having totravel, in the second round fixture. It is always difficultplaying a match after such a long journey, and we lost thismatch. However, Kathryn Barr (S6) managed to find us aconsolation goal towards the end of the game. This meantwe now played in the Bowl Tournament. Due to thepressures of play by times, limited time off school, andthe weather, we ended up playing our West District semi-final and the Bowl fixture one day after the other.Glenalmond College travelled to us on a very cold day andboth teams played some excellent attacking hockey butunfortunately Glenalmond sneaked in a goal at the end.We also played The High School of Glasgow in the WestDistrict semi final and after a draw, we just lost in runningpenalties.

We had played a lot of competitive hockey in the first partof the season and the team worked very hard duringtraining to develop and perform at such a high level. Atthe time we did not realise that our hard work anddedication to early morning fitness and extra lunch timesessions was all going to pay off.

As we entered the indoor season, the team felt closerthan ever before and with the help of our new addition,Mr Shepherd, we won the Indoor West District Cup. Weplayed St Aloysius’ College and Lomond School in thesection matches, winning 2-0 and 4-0 respectively.

1st XI Girls’ Hockey

Jordanhill were our opponents in the semi-finals wherewe won 3-1. We met The High School of Glasgow in thefinal and won 3-2. Scorers for the tournament were KateRennie (S5) 3, Georgia Coyle (S5) 2, Kathryn Barr (S6)2, Megan Baillie (S6) 2, Zara Mason (S6) 1, EliseFitzgerald (S5) 1 and Rachel Pang (S4) 1. It wasfantastic to see so many goals scored from so manyplayers.

Next up was Perth and the Scottish Indoor Tournament,an amazing experience as we were playing matches whilethe Scottish Mens’ indoor team competed againstCanada. We worked hard for each other, but we did havesome succumb to injury, and we lost our first match to theeventual winners Strathallan and then drew with RobertGordon’s. Due to goal difference we didn’t get through tothe semis, but played Galashiels for our classificationmatch, winning 4-0.

We entered the second half of the season with fire in ourbellies, and victory over the High School of Glasgow and aspectacular game against George Watson’s College,where we drew. Finally, the sevens tournaments cameround, and we won the plate in The High School ofGlasgow Tournament. We played Kelvinside, St Columba’sand Wellington in our section as we qualified for the platesemi. Jordanhill were our opponents and after a draw wewon on running penalties. We then played Austin Friars inthe final to win 1-0. Scorers were Kathryn Barr (S6) 3 andAnna Winter (S4) 3.

It was certainly a rollercoaster through injury and victory.This was a tremendous year for all and it proved our teammotto ‘Believing is achieving!’ to be correct. There aremany bright sparks coming up through the years and Icannot wait to see what the Hutchesons’ Senior Teamscan achieve in the coming years.

The 2nd XI has had a great hockey season. One of thehighlights was winning the 2nd XI tournament in Februarydespite the freezing, wet conditions. This was well

deserved after flying through the heats and the semi-finalwith goals scored by Anna Winter (S4), Catriona Irvine(S6), Sophie Antliff (S4), Amber Beckwith (S4) andAnais Bonner (S5). In the final we won 2-0 against TheHigh School of Glasgow, with Anais scoring bothoutstanding goals. The tournament highlighted thefantastic team spirit and mindset of the players, no matterthe challenge. Our talented centre mid, Sophie Antliff(S4), also played for South West out of school.

The team won or drew the majority of Saturday matchesthis season and had great fun, while strengtheningteamwork and our hockey skills. In the short, butenjoyable sevens season we played in a mini tournamentat the school, and smaller matches during training. Thiswas a great way to improve both fitness andcommunication skills with a much smaller team on thepitch. It has been an extremely rewarding and enjoyableexperience being captain of the 2nd XI and I wish all thebest to my teammates in their future hockey careers.

Erica Drummond (S5)

Here we are at the end of another hockey season – myfinal year playing hockey for the 3rd XI – and I canhonestly say, I enjoyed every second of it, even theearly morning fitness sessions! We had amazing teamspirit and undying support from Mrs McNeill. The 3rdand 4th XI played phenomenally this year and Icouldn’t have asked for a better group to have playedwith after six years of hockey at Hutchie.

The 3rds started off the season with a hard-fought winagainst Mary Erskine and went on to play well as ateam in their successive matches. Throughout the yearwe played a total of 14 matches, and we won seven,drew two and lost five, while scoring an impressive 30goals and only letting in 17.

In the Hutchesons’ Grammar School 3rd XItournament competing for the Morag McNeill Shield,

named after our own Mrs McNeill, we managed tocome joint third. Our determination to do well for MrsNcNeill also resulted in us ending the season on ahigh, winning against Hamilton College 2-0.

The 4th XI played nine games altogether, won one,drew three and lost five. Like the 3rd’s winter games,many were cancelled but they didn’t let this get themdown and continued in high spirits in both trainingand matches; nothing slowed them down.

The whole year was filled with fantastic goals,amazing saves and an abundance of excitement. Ofcourse, though there was sadness as the year came toan end alongside our time with Mrs McNeill – towhom we wish the best of luck!

Four nil to Hutchie: yeah!!! Marr College defeated. Ourfinal result of the year; here’s how we got there...

Ok, we had a bit of a shaky start. The first year at seniorschool meant lots of changes for us and lots of newpeople. Miss Harkness and the other coaches gave usgreat encouragement and we soon had a six nil victoryagainst Wellington – amazing! Then there were somedraws, losses – and some more victories. We trained andplayed in all weathers, only the fiercest of storms – Atiyah,Brendan, Dennis and Jorge – standing in our way. Welearned lots of advanced techniques and plays, and reallycame together as a squad. We had hoped to play in theWest District tournament in March but of course theseason ended early. I was confident we were going to dowell.

The defence consisted of Kirsty McLeod, Eilidh Fraser,Anna Dickson, Eilidh Cheng, Ariella Greenhill and LucySmart (all S1). The back worked well and although weconceded a few goals, they always worked extremelyhard in their tackling, passing and positional play. Themidfield consisted of Andie Gillespie, Maisie Simmers-Clark, Matilda Littlejohn and Kavita Rakhra (all S1).They were the driving force of the team with speed andskill to overcome opponents. The forwards were the mainattacking force in the team. This line consisted of AriannaKerr, Aminah Malik, Isla Dobson and Lara Sabharwal(all S1). They had a great deal of speed and urgency to go

forward with the ball when they got it. When we did scoregoals, they were spectacular team goals.

I have loved being hockey captain and a massive thankyou to Miss Harkness, Mr Shepherd, Mrs Green, MissBuchanan, Megan and April, our S6 coaches and everyoneelse who have been involved. Also to all the girls in thesquad and all of our Saturday morning support crew (youknow who you are) for making it such a great experiencefor the whole team. I hope everyone has a healthy andhappy summer and look forward to getting my stick downfor some more play after the summer.

Andie Gillespie (S1)

The squad has developed and progressed wellthroughout this season. We started slowly but grew inconfidence and although we didn’t manage to win anybig games, we improved so much as a team,developing skills and strengths. It was a terribleseason weather-wise, with only 13 out of 20 fixturesplayed, making it difficult to get match experience. Soit was a year for building the squad with the intake oflots of new pupils to the school who had never played.

S1B Girls’ Hockey

We have really enjoyed playing hockey this year. Withmany of us having only started playing, there were lots ofskills we had to learn. So unsurprisingly the seasonstarted off with a few losses. This did not dampen ourspirits. We enjoyed training and the friendships we made.In S1C, there were many matches against other school Bteams that proved a hard test, but with encouragementfrom each other, we were able to rise to the challenge.

S1C & S1D Girls’ Hockey

Whilst there were some lows to this season there wasalso some highs, for example drawing with MaryErskines 1-1 in our first game of the season. Drawingwith Marr College 1-1 and Jordanhill School 0-0. Thesewere all very competitive and exciting games whichdisplayed great levels of determination from all girlswithin the squad.

Ailsa Greenhalgh (S1)

The main highlight this year was beating The GlasgowAcademy 2-1 at home in a very competitive match whichshowcased our progress. It was a day to remember! S1Dgirls honed their skills during games time, but wemanaged to gain great experience playing against TheGlasgow Academy and The High School of Glasgow.

We have had a very successful season and everyone hasimproved so much. Despite the weather affecting a lot ofour Saturday morning fixtures, we still played manycompetitive games with very positive results. The S2Ahad an amazing +21 goal difference and a large part of theseason was an unbeaten run. Emma Gilmour (S2) wasour top scorer with some amazing finishes. A big mentionmust go to our goalkeeper Katie Dobbie (S2) who hasbeen solid at the back all season and made so manybrilliant saves.

One of our best performances was against The GlasgowAcademy in September, a game we dominated and won3-2 with goals from Lauren Edward (S2), MirandaSchmulian (S2) and a strike by Ava Walton (S2)deflected well into the goal by Layli Phillips (S2). We alsowon an amazing match against Strathallan in November,

The B Team have had a great deal of fun this year withmusic and motivation supplied by many in the team. Theteam has been captained by Lexi Kerr (S2) with NiamhWyatt (S2) as vice-captain, and everyone workedtogether to build a great team to play in. We played 10matches, winning three, drawing five and losing only twoagainst tough teams. We scored an amazing total of 17goals, with only nine goals scored against us. The C team has had one of their best seasons withHarnisha Aulak (S2) as Captain and Farrah Mohammed(S2) as Vice-Captain. We lost our first couple of games,but then won three in a row against The High School ofGlasgow (twice) and Jordanhill, both very strong teams.Our best win was against The High School of Glasgowwhich was 2-0, and our most intense game was when wewon 3-2 against Jordanhill.

S2C Girls’ Hockey

The 2019/2020 season for the S3 A Girls’ Hockey Team hasbeen a challenge but one we have all thoroughly enjoyed.As a team we have grown closer and more resilient,learning to support each other through hard times. Some ofour matches didn’t go the way we hoped, but we showedimprovements each week and have come a long way sincethe start of the season. We won 3-0 in the first round ofthe Scottish cup against Selkirk High School and went onto a tough match against The Glasgow Academy, wherewe narrowly missed out on qualifying to the next round.After this, we qualified for The Scottish Bowl where welost 1-0 against Edinburgh Academy, closely missing out onthe final.

winning 5-1. These convincing results shaped our mindsetfor the rest of the season.

Every week the team put in their best and our greatresults reflect that. The Hutchie tournament at the end ofthe season was a great day, even though we just missedout on winning. We topped our section which included StAloysius, Wellington and Jordanhill, winning 4-0 againsteach of them. An exciting semi-final against St Columba’sfinished with us winning 2-0 and in a very close finalagainst Kelvinside, we just missed out on the win, with agolden goal deciding the game. A huge thank you must goto our coach Mrs Fulton who guided us throughout thewhole season and kept us positive. None of oursuccesses would have been possible without her support.

Miranda Schmulian (S2)

Glasgow Academy and The High School of Glasgow. Our3-0 win against Marr College in March and 7-0 win againstStrathallan in November were our best attacking displays.All the Bs would like to thank all the PE staff and MrsFulton, Mr Shepherd, Ms Green and Miss Lonergan inparticular for helping us with fitness, skills andunderstanding the game. They have made hockey veryenjoyable this season.

Lexi Kerr (S2)

We also had a great opportunity to play in a team with S3sand S4s, and even though we did not win, it was anexcellent experience. We also had a chance to help out atthe Hutchie hockey tournament. Everybody worked reallyhard and improved so much and we know we have grownso much as a team.

Harnisha Aulak (S2)

Every Wednesday lunchtime, we practise our shortcorners, resulting in strong attacking and defensiveformation. When we get the chance to take corners, weexecute them well, so all the hard work pays off.Recently, we have been working on the skills required forsenior hockey – and playing hockey sevens has been bigpart of that, which will help us next year playing alongsidefifth and sixth years.

Boys’ Hockey

Our season began with a competitive tournament, whereour new, talented squad was tested against the bestteams in Scotland. After a few narrow losses, comingaway with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Robert Gordon’swas a promising start to the season and gave us plenty towork with. Having then suffered a loss to GeorgeWatson’s, the boys quickly bounced back against TheGlasgow Academy, putting on a dominant display andwinning 4-1.

Our Scottish Cup run began with a nail-biting victory overGlenalmond College. Our next cup fixture in thequarterfinal knocked us out of the competition in a thrillingyet frustrating 5-4 loss against rivals Edinburgh Academy.

We were eager to redeem ourselves in the Bowl semi-final against Robert Gordon’s, which brought out our bestperformance of the season to clinch the victory. With a bigfinish to the season against Strathallen in the final, wewere gutted to have the match postponed to a later date.However, we look forward to what is promised to be anexciting match.

1st XI Boys’ HockeyI would like to give honourable mentions to certain playersfor acting as excellent role models to younger players andtheir consistent dedication throughout the season. SakethJampana (S6) in goals has been outstanding, consistentlymaking vital saves. Shreyas Gupta (S6) has been a keycomponent of our defensive unit this year and mentiongoes to David Tobias (S6), Sajal Sethi (S6) and OwenGould (S4) who have contributed greatly to our success.

We owe this success to our coaches Mr Crawford and MrDunlop, who have worked tirelessly throughout theseason to help us reach our potential. Throughout theyears, Mr Dunlop has been a huge inspiration and rolemodel to the senior players and none of this would bepossible without his guidance and genuine passion for thegame. I must personally thank him for his continuedservice to hockey at Hutchesons’.

It has been a great honour and absolute pleasure to leadthis remarkable and spirited team. I wish the new squadthe very best of luck for the next season ahead.

Varun Rana (S6)

The 2nd XI has really improved this year. It started withone of our toughest matches against George Watson’s.But being defeated early in the year gave us a place towork from and through dedication to regular trainingsessions, we learned how to better strategize and co-ordinate.

Across the team, everyone has come a long way fromSeptember, with some such as George Balfour Sayers(S4), Lewis Gambles (S4) and Ronnie Barr (S4) beingselected for the 1st XI and playing strongly there too.Particularly noteworthy is the progression that’s beenmade by Zak Chaudhry (S4): his skill playing in goals hasimproved greatly in addition to his skill on the field, thanks

2nd XI Boys’ Hockeyin no small part to his time playing at Clydesdale.Matthew Smith (S4) has also seen great improvementthrough experience gained playing in numerous matchesacross the year.

While this year has been a success overall, it would befoolish to completely disregard the match results. Thoseresults do not accurately reflect the effort and dedicationput into the sport by each member of the team and, comenext year, the 2nd XIs should easily see every success byapplying the better techniques and skills acquiredthroughout this session. It’s onwards and upwards.

Stewart Alexander (S5)

This season we have performed well, although we havehad some hiccups along the way. We have all progressedwell but the most improved is very hard to decide JamieBarnett’s (S3) has learned to be in better positioningwhereas Niklas Lange (S3) has bettered his marking anddefensive strategy has improved greatly. Some new S2players have started their hockey this season, such asArchie Mclean (S2) who made his goalkeeping debut atthe start of the season and has made many great saves inevery game. Another new player is Elliot Cowle (S2) whostarted at the start of the season and has made greatstrides in his skills and awareness on and off the ball.

2nd XI Boys’ HockeyPlayers such as Foster Harrowell and Jack Nairn (bothS3) have been great when they have been available.Jamie Green, Robin Ferguson, Guy Hogan and JohnnyBradley (all S3) have all been great to train with and learnfrom as they are much more experienced and all play at ahigh level. Firth Borland, Jamie Green and Jack Nairn(all S3) were all selected to play for the West U16 Districtteam. For all of these improvements and skills we mustthank Mr Crawford and Mr Dunlop for helping us not onlyimprove but to help us keep our cool during hard games.

The school football team’s season had a brilliantstart – an 11-0 win – with the team being nearthe top of the league through many weeks ofplay. The team also had a Scottish cup run that

took us to the grounds of Ibrox, where a narrow defeat toWilliamwood put us out. However, even with convincingwins such as a 5-0 victory over St Aloysius, and with theteam in good spirits, a run to the quarter-finals of theGlasgow Cup was ended by Scottish Champions,Bearsden Academy.

Nearing the end of the season, we were in contention forthe league, sitting just one point behind the leaders with agame in hand. But our hopes were cut short, with theleague cut short due to the coronavirus. Despite this, weplayed well throughout the season and a strong campaignshowed our ability – we were really unlucky not to have afinal shot at the GSFA League and the SISFA Cup, wherewe had qualified for the national quarter-finals to playGeorge Watson’s.

Special mention should go to Nathan Heron (S5) whoscored more goals (16) than any other Hutchie pupil sinceway before even the heady days of Jamie Naismith(nephew of Steven) and Mark Davies (son of Billy) inseason 2010/11. Records cannot find anyone scoringmore than Nathan in a single season. Mention should alsogo to some of the other S5 who were excellent (AidanJunner, Jay McFarlane-Letham, Ben Dickson, PaddyLamont, David Reid and Dino Molinari (all S5) and tothe S4 who really stepped up to the plate – Ethan Brewand Josh Kersh in particular. Thanks also to Mr Russelland Mr Leslie for their work with the team.

Logan Anderson (S6)

Football

Awonderful, warm, summer term in 2018 wasfollowed by a rather damp and cold 2019.However, once again, despite the challengingconditions, we had an excellent cricket season

at Hutchesons’. The 1st XI were competitive in all ourfixtures and a real blend of youth and experiencerepresented the senior side during the season. CaptainDaniel Cairns (S6), who gained international honoursonce again in the summer (Scotland U19), led the teamwell supported by his fellow S6 players TarunKoteeswaran and Abhishek Sinha. Varun Rana,Shreyas Gupta and Sajal Sethi (all S5) alongside ZakkiTariq (S4) were stalwarts of the team. Although thefixture with the XL club was rained off at lunch, the fixturewith the MCC was a real highlight with the Hutchie boyskeeping the MCC under pressure for the whole day in atough but enjoyable match with Aditya Mohan (S5)surviving a tense last over to hold on for a draw.

In the opening round of the S1-3 West Cup, NikhilKoteeswaran of S3 scored an incredible 153 not out vWellington School. We met The High School of Glasgowin the final and won the cup for the 5th time in 6 years andprogressed onto the National finals day which took placeat Doo’cot park, Perth. We were competitive in the semi-final but lost out to Robert Gordons in an exciting match.Special mention should go to Owen Gould (S3) whocaptained the side well, giving valuable experience toyounger players. A number of the junior cup squad also

Cricket 2019represented the 1st XI this season including promisingS3’s Aditya Mahapatra, Nikhil Koteeswaran, OwenGould and Hassan Mehmood. Aditya also had thehonour of representing Scotland U 15 cricket in severalfixtures against English counties and Ireland in July.

Junior House cricket rounded off the season superbly andStuart house captained by Robin Ferguson (S3) retainedthe W A Edward trophy after a very enjoyable day ofcricket at Clydesdale.

Junior cricket is going through a transformation with newformats being rolled out by the Scottish Cricket Union totry and make games shorter, quicker and more active forthe players involved. At Hutchie, our focus is very muchon providing a platform for our young players toexperience various formats of the game in a fun andengaging environment. If they enjoy the game,opportunities are there for them to progress at school andwe actively encourage them to join local clubs to continuetheir involvement. Our Primary 6 and 7 play Kwik Cricketusing a soft ball and our participation numbers on Saturdaymorning are very high. S1 are gradually introduced tohardball cricket in pairs games and amended formatsbefore moving on to more formal 20/20 cricket in S2 andabove.

Hutchesons’ boasts eight badminton courts atthe Senior School and one at the JuniorSchool. These courts are well usedrecreationally at lunchtime in addition to being

utilised in curricular time by all year groups. The S6 Highergroup also use the space for their studies on a weeklybasis.

This year, a considerable number of pupils entered theGlasgow Schools Badminton Championships. Thesecondary schools competition took place at BellahoustonAcademy in January, and there were many goodperformances leading to medals as follows:

A few keen Primary pupils entered the PrimaryChampionships the following month and all acquittedthemselves well. They smashed and served and clearedall day; they laughed and smiled whilst enjoying healthycompetition and forging new friendships.

Junior Girls15U girls included Rachel Pang (S3), Brodi Cuthill (S2),Emma Murray (S2) and Hafsah Zarah (S1). They wontheir group by beating both Dollar and the High School ofGlasgow 4-2. They therefore progressed to the Scottishfinals but Hafsah was ill so Isabella Buchanan (P7) filledin but they narrowly lost 2-4 to Strathallan with some veryclose games. Thank you to Newlands Tennis club for theallowing the late booking of the indoor courts as theweather on the finals day was horrendous.

13U girls beat George Watsons 4-2 but lost to Dollar andthe High School of Glasgow. The squad consisted ofMiranda Schmulian (S1), Rubi Cuthill (P7), DiyaSharma (S1), Anna Wilson (S1) and Abi Clark (S1).

TournamentsThe High School of Glasgow had their annual tennistournament which consist of three couples. An U13, U15and a senior couple.Miranda Schmulian (S1) and RubiCuthill (P7) were the U13 couple who won 19 games and

lost 19 games. The U15’s were Brodi Cuthill (S2) andEmma Murray (S2) and they won their age groupwinning 33 games to 9. Rachel Pang (S3) and IonaPurdie (S5) were the senior couple winning 19 games to14. There were 5 other schools in the competition Dollar,St Georges, Glasgow Academy, High School of Glasgowand George Watsons. Overall we came second with allthe games added together from each age group.

There were also some friendly tennis matches hosted bythe High school of Glasgow on a sunny day in June forpupils in P7, S1, S2 and S3. This was a successful daywith lots of tennis being played.

At class level, our P5-P7 girls enjoyed lessons on a weeklybasis at Titwood Tennis Club, and our senior pupilslikewise enjoyed tennis during games lessons. StuartClark, the Titwood Tennis Coach, led Senior Gamessessions on a Wednesday, inspiring all standards to pushthemselves onwards. Thanks to him for all his efforts andhis encouraging manner.

Once again, Hutchie’s talented swimmers put onamazing displays at many galas. Exceptionallyhigh standards were maintained throughoutthe year, and swimmers have competed at

school, area and national championships. In fact, this yearsaw the biggest haul of medals ever at the SeniorGlasgow Schools’ Championships with a fantastic 38medals altogether.

The relay teams swam exceedingly well. Winning goldmedals were the U13 Boys’ Relay Euan Mitchell, FinlayCunningham (S1), Findlay Tsang, Alasdair Nugent(S2); the U13 Girls’ Relay consisting of Heidi Ren, IslaDobson, Daisy Blair, Lara Sabharwal (all S1) also brokethe Glasgow Schools record. Fighting for their win wasthe U14 Boys‘ Relay made up of Guy Pelosi, Max Pelosi,Alex Robin (S2) and Joseph Aylward (S3) who securedthe South Side ASC trophy. The U16 Boys‘ Relay SamSabharwal (S3), Euan McCarthy (S3) MichaelMacaulay and Kaan Comlekci (S4) won the Crew OneClub Trophy

The Open Girls’ Relay consisting of Ellie Lonergan-Black(S6), Elise Fitzgerald (S5), Gail Stewart (S4) and ZoeFlower (S4) won bronze in their race. In addition to thisthe Open Boys’ Relay Callum Gow, George Oades,Calum Taylor (all S6) and Misha Hildebrandt (S5) wonsilver, as did the U16 Girls’ Relay and the U14 Girls’ Relayteams.

In the individual events, in the O16s category EliseFitzgerald (S5) swam extremely well, breaking theGlasgow schools record for 100m Backstroke and winningthe Hutchesons’ School and Club Trust Ltd Trophy. In theU13s’ Category Heidi Ren (S1) had a very successfulchampionship, breaking two Glasgow schools’ records,collecting the Daily Record Cup for first place 50mBackstroke and winning gold in the 100m Freestyle. EuanMitchell (S1) also won gold in the 50m Freestyle. In theU14s, Amy McLeod (S2) won the Sandra Squires Cup forthe 100m breaststroke and similarly the boys swam

successfully with Guy Pelosi (S2) winning gold in 100mbreaststroke. Not to be outshone, Max Pelosi (S2) wonthe Brookes Toc H Cup for the 50m Freestyle andachieved gold in the 50m Butterfly.

Winning silver medals in the Championships were LaraSabharwal, Eilidh Fraser and Daisy Blair (all S1), as didAmy McLeod and Guy Pelosi (both S2). Findlay Tsang(S2) won two silver medals in his races and EliseFitzgerald (S5) and Becca Augier (S4) both also wonsilver. There were two silver medals for our life savingteams Darcey Johnston & Jessica Molloy (both S3) andSam Sabharwal & Lewis Herd (both S3).

Those who fought for bronze medals in difficult raceswere Finlay Cunningham, winning not one but two, andMaya Smith, Euan Mitchell, and Lara Sabharwal (allS1). Alex Robin and Katie McCarthy, both in S2, bothwon bronze, and Sam Sabharwal (S3) and Becca Augier(S4) also achieved medals.

Hutchie also swam at a high level in the Scottish SchoolsChampionship at Tollcross – achieving seven medalsoverall. In particular, the Juniors Girls swam incrediblywith Coco Croxford (P7) narrowly coming second in theGirls 12 & Under group for 50m Butterfly, with animpressive time of 33.11s. In the same age group wasIsla Dobson (S1) winning a very successful gold in the50m backstroke. Maya Smith (S1) just missed out on amedal in the U12s 50m Breaststroke. Heidi Ren (S1)came 5th in the 100m backstroke with a remarkable timeof 1:11.99, she also came 6th in the 200m IndividualMedley. Also swimming very well was Amy McLeod(S2) who won bronze in the Girls 13-14 100mBreaststroke and came 11th in the 200m Breaststroke.

The Senior Girls also swam admirably with EliseFitzgerald (S5) coming 4th in the Girls 17-19 100mbackstroke and 6th in the 200m Backstroke. BeccaAugier (S4) managed to finish 7th in both the Girls’ 15-16200m Backstroke and Butterfly. In the boys’ team, allthree swimmers were in the Boys’ 13-14 category withMax Pelosi (S2) coming third in 100m Freestyle andnarrowly came 4th in the 200m Freestyle. Guy Pelosi(S2) came 7th in both 100m and 200m Breaststroke andAlexandre Robin (S2) did well to achieve a bronze medalin the 200m Individual Medley and 8th place in the 100mBackstroke.

This year at Glasgow Schools Primary Championships wasfilled with enthusiastic swimmers and they swam verywell winning a total of 10 medals: 3 gold, 5 silver and 2bronze.

In the 10 yrs and under category, Alyssa Vavelle (P5) verywell, finishing second in the 25m backstroke. In the 11yrsand under category, Vibha Thorat (P6) also swam in the25m Breaststroke to win a silver medal. And in the boys’category, Jonnie Gillespie (P5) won a bronze medal in

The attendance the primary running club has again been veryhigh this year. All pupils were fully committed to workinghard to improve their fitness and developed their runningboth on the track and at Cross Country.

Hutchie entered teams into the Scottish Schools Road Relay event inSeptember. The races were exciting with each pupil racing a mile. TheP7 girls’ team (Edie Simmers Clark, Aneesa Phillips and CocoCroxford) picked up silver medals. The P7 boys’ team (BenMacCracken, Myles Macaulay and Hamish Cornell) also picked upsilver.

In January and February all members of the running club had theopportunity to race against pupils from; High School of Glasgow, TheGlasgow Academy and Kelvinside Academy as we hosted matches atAuldhouse.

Normally highlights of our running season include Glasgow SchoolsCross Country Championships and Scottish Schools Cross CountryChampionships. Unfortunately, both events were cancelled in 2020.Well done, however, to all pupils who worked hard in preparation andearned their selection for the events. Selected teams are listed below.

In the Junior Championships, first in the Girls was HeidiRen (S1) followed by Amy McLeod (S2) and third wasIsla Dobson (S2). In the Boys, taking Gold was MaxPelosi, Silver Guy Pelosi (both S2) and third was EuanMitchell (S1). In the Senior Championships winning Goldin the Girls was Elise Fitzgerald (S5), Silver BeccaAugier (S4) and winning Bronze was Ava Love (S3).

Finally, at the end of last academic year, on Wednesday5th June 2019 Hutchie made their way to the RoyalCommonwealth Pool in Edinburgh to compete for the firsttime in the Scottish Schools Team Championships. ThePrimary girls’ team of Coco Croxford (P6), AnnaDickson, Daisy Blair, and Andie Gillespie (all P7)finished 6th in the 4 X 50m Freestyle event in the morningsession and were delighted to improve one place in theMedley. The secondary boys’ team won a bronze medal inthe Freestyle event; the team comprised of SamSabharwal (S2), Alex Robin, Max Pelosi, Guy Pelosi(all S1). In the medley race Euan McCarthy (S2) joinedSam, Alex and Max; they managed to go one step further,winning the silver medal.

A huge congratulations to all the swimmers this seasonand a massive thanks to all the PE staff who took the timeto organise and help at all the events. We look forward tomany more years of successful Hutchie swimming.

Ellie Lonergan-Black (S6)

the 25m Breaststroke and Cameron Nugent (P6)collected a bronze medal in the 25m Freestyle. In 12yrsand over, Coco Croxford (P7) had a very successfulafternoon, winning gold in the 25m Butterfly, 50mBackstroke and in addition to this she also won the NairnTrophy in a new Glasgow Schools record, beating theprevious record by one second. Lily McKaig (P7) alsoperformed well in the 50m Freestyle winning silver.

Continuing the high level of achievement was the Primary5 girls’ relay team consisting of Alyssa Lavelle, KatieGilmour, Anna Green and Ameerah Hanif, who workedwell together in the relay to win the Robert SmithMemorial Trophy. The girls’ P7 relay team narrowlydefeated and they had to settle for second. In addition tothis the P6 boys’ relay also won a silver medal.

During the Primary House Championship, Lochiel camefirst with 115 points, Argyll second with 109, Stuart camethird with 105 and Montrose came fourth with 99 points.Winning the Life Saving for the Girls was Lily McKaig(P7) and Eilidh McLean (P7) from Lochiel and winningGold for the Boys was Murray Waugh (P7) and ZacharyRanald (P7) in Argyll.

In the school’s own swimming gala there were four newrecords made by the Junior Girls with Heidi Ren (S1)smashing three new records of 32.62s in 50m Backstroke,30.11s in 50m Freestyle and 31.75s in 50m Butterfly andAmy McLeod (S2) broke the 50m Breaststroke with thetime of 38.82s.

For senior games, I chose to take tennis and I havemassively enjoyed my time playing the sport. I havebeen able to improve my technique and ability, as wellas work alongside my peers. Our great coach Stuarthas helped me become a better tennis player. Tennishas always remained a highlight of my school weekand every Wednesday it was a joy, even in the coldest

The past year, getting on the bus atTitwood Road and going to theGlasgow Climbing Centre has beena highlight of the week for the smallgroup of senior pupils who choseclimbing for games. From thewonderful instructors to the eclecticplaylist (never the same week-to-week), GCC makes the whole groupfeel at home. Beginners andexperienced climbers alike getgreat reward and enjoyment fromcompleting a challenging route and

The senior games Aerobics and Dance Class this year hasbeen very enjoyable! We were guided through manydifferent dance styles and got the chance to perform thesestyles, whilst working either together or individually.Although we were taught many different pieces ofchoreography, we were also given opportunities to use ourcreative skills to create our own, planned or improvised.

Fitness and aerobic movement were also incorporated intoour classes. At the beginning of each class, we did a warm-

up, some fitness and a light stretch to prevent injury andalso to increase strength and flexibility. This slightly variedfrom week to week, creating a refreshing start to eachclass.

Overall, many beneficial skills were learned in our weeklyclasses, which was always a very fun, friendly andsupportive environment!

Climbing

Every Wednesday, the school’srowing group meet with GlasgowRowing club. During the wintermonths, we spent our session in thegym doing strength and conditioningand indoor rowing on machines.

When the weather got warmer, thegroup went out on the water. Formany of us, this was our first yearrowing and our first time on out onthe boats. Whilst the S4s werestruggling to keep the boats upright,the older (and more experienced)rowers were out on singles anddoubles. On a few occasions, thegroup went out on a coxed eightwhere we worked on our techniqueand timings.

This year we have had a successfulyear with Ella Bryant (S6), TommyJohnson (S6) and Oliver Hartford(S5) representing the school at the

Scottish School’s Indoor RowingChampionships in November.

Sadly, we say goodbye to twointernational rowers, Ella and IzzyMartin (S5), both of whom havecoxed for the Scottish team in recenthome international matches.

Thank you to our coach Jack Burns,who helped us greatly throughout theyear. We wish you luck for theOlympic selection for Tokyo 2021.And, thank you to Mrs Martin forgiving us the opportunity to row thisyear.
