Where did the summer go? I guess technically there is a couple of more weeks, but the kids are heading back to school, the CMAC season is over, there are fewer boats in the water, and evenings are getting a bit cooler. I have said before that I think of September as kind of an unofficial new year. It seems that as we all get back into our regular schedules from the more relaxed days of summer there is a renewed sense of organization and planning. As we enter into the last quarter of the year, many of us are making sure that we have accomplished our work plans for this year and planning goals, objectives, and budgets for next.
As you gear up for the last quarter of the year and begin to put plans in place for 2017, I encourage you to think about your engagement with the Chamber. The Chamber team is honored to be able to serve our members needs and we enjoy getting to know and learning more about you. Your partnership with the Chamber and support of our mission is one of the keys to the success of our community and we thank you for it!
For those of you looking for additional involvement, we are always looking to add to our volunteer base. Whether you have the ability to make a short term or long term commitment, we appreciate any expertise and time that you would be willing to share. We value the time commitment of our members in our employees just as much as we do sponsorships. Please consider becoming involved or encouraging one of your employees to become involved as one of our volunteers. We have a number of committees that could use the talents of our members. If you or someone you work with is interested in participation at some level with the Chamber, please have them call the office and we can help find the right fit. I or another member of the Chamber team would be happy to sit down and discuss with you what opportunities are available and where your talents would be most valuable.
Later this month the 2017 sponsorship packet will be sent out to help with your planning for next year. I hope that you will take a few moments to review the info and see if there are ways that your business is able to support some of the Chamber activities.
Happy Fall!
Sincerely,
Alison Grems, IOM, President/CEO

New Department of Labor Regulations
Join us for a Breakfast and Business on September 9th from 7:30-9:00am at The Inn on the Lake. The Breakfast and Business will focus on the Federal Department of Labor’s recent rulings regarding exempt and non-exempt employees. The final rule radically increases the salary threshold under which most employees will be automatically eligible for overtime pay. The current federal salary level required for exemption is $455 a week ($23,660 for a full-year employee), which was last updated in 2004, and the new exemption threshold will be $913 a week, or $47,476 per year.
In addition, the change in the salary threshold also includes an automatic adjustment every three years. The adjustment will be tied to the 40th percentile of full time salaried workers in the lowest wage region of the country (currently the Southeast).
The overtime rule leaves intact the current so-called “duties test” that determines whether or not certain employees are eligible for overtime even if they make more than the new $47,476 threshold amount. To be eligible for this exemption, an employee’s job duties must primarily involve executive, administrative, or professional duties as defined by DOL’s regulations.
Trey Clower III and Nick Herman of Paychex inc. will be doing the presentation on this important topic for you and your business.
Cost to attend the breakfast is $20.00 per person. RSVP to [email protected] at www.canandaiguachamber.com, or by calling the Chamber office. Reservations cancelled after September 1st will be billed.
Breakfast & Business with new FLCC President, Dr. Robert Nye
Join the Canandaigua Chamber for a Breakfast & Business event with new Finger Lakes Community College President, Dr. Robert K. Nye. The event will be a great opportunity for our members to hear from and meet FLCC’s fifth president.
Dr. Nye began at FLCC on July 1, 2016, following a distinguished military and academic career. He previously served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pa., and Deputy Provost of the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Nye served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. He holds a doctorate in public administration from the University of Kansas.
Dr. Nye would like all of you to come ready to share your perspectives on the business climate, education and training needs, and opportunities for the college to partner with area businesses to facilitate economic growth. It will be a very interactive event and one not to be missed!
The Breakfast and Business will take place from 7:30-9:00am on Thursday, September 29th in Stage 14 (next to the café) at Finger Lakes Community College. Cost to attend is $20.00 per person. You must RSVP your attendance by Thursday, September 22nd to [email protected], at www.canandaiguachamber.com, or by calling the Chamber office. Reservations cancelled after September 22nd will be billed.

In 2013 City Council approved a change to city ordinance preventing commercial use or occupancy from
occurring until a zoning compliance application is received from the City Zoning Officer demonstrating that the
intended use conforms with municipal code. A new zoning permit is required if there is a change in use,
occupancy, tenant, or owner for each property. This is an important permit for those who own property or want to
start a business in Canandaigua.
In the past, some new business owners have signed leases and moved into their new building, only to find out
their business does not conform to municipal code. The goal of the ordinance is to identify nonconforming use,
before money is invested, and perhaps not delay opening while a variance is sought. At the moment, there is not a
fee associated with submitting a Zoning Compliance Application, the application is merely a clarifying step early
in the development process.
If you are a property owner or planning to expand, or you have additional general questions regarding general
zoning questions feel free to contact Thomas Lyon, Economic Development Specialist at 585-394-4400 ext. 208
