2 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH
DEAR PARISHIONERS...
We have much to celebrate! On this Trinity Sunday, let us give thanks for three things:
First, for the first of hopefully many young men to be ordained from this parish. This coming Saturday, June 6, Michael Thiel will be ordained a transitional deacon at 10 am at the Cathedral. This is a great moment for our parish. You are invited to this ordination and my hope is to fill the Cathedral that morning and again at our Saturday 5 pm Mass where Michael will Deacon and preach. There is a parish reception following. Second, in the same Mass at the Cathedral will be a priestly ordination. Deacon Edward, currently a transitional Deacon, will be ordained a priest. Since priesthood assignments can not be made until ordination, and we are the only parish in need of a priest according to the last assignments, I suggest you put two and two together and be there to pray and congratulate him on his new assignment. Third, we have done it! Great news! We have met our Bishop’s Appeal in record time! Thank you to all our donors! Last year, which was the first year in my ten years here that we met the goal, we did it in the fall. This year we made it by Memorial day! Now if you were considering a gift, you may still donate. What happens is half will stay at the diocese and half will come back to the parish, which we will put towards our Renewed in Faith project, specifically towards multi-media upgrades that are happening.
Thank you , Thank you, Thank you.
Fr. Doug PS: Fr Jason’s father, Douglas Blahnik, passed away last week. Please remember Fr. Jason and his family in prayer. If you would like to do something, you might consider a Mass offering of $10. You can send it in a card to Fr. Jason at the Newman Center, 800 W Elmwood Avenue, Oshkosh, WI 54901

Baptism Preparation
Infants accept the faith through the faith of their parents, so St. Raphael the Archangel Parish offers group sessions to prepare parents for the baptism ceremony and for lead-ing their children in a life of faith. Sessions are held twice per month, all year round. Please call, e-mail or stop by the parish office to register for the Baptism Preparation group session and to schedule your child’s baptism. See the parish website for more details. (www.raphael.org)

MAY 31, 2015 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY | 5
Reflecting on the Scriptures Brothers and sisters: For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will. At some time I believe all of us have experienced feelings beyond words, and articulation of what is in our hearts is not possible. Like a crying child who is asked, “What’s wrong?”, I may only be able to respond, “I don’t know” because I can’t name it.
Indeed, it is the Holy Spirit who knows and understands what is in my heart before I am even cognizant that I am feeling empty, lonely, listless. The movement is so deep in my soul that I cannot speak about it. Paul articulates this part of the Christian life in terms of the need to be led by the Spirit. The Spirit is God at work in the world and in the human soul. It is the Holy Spirit within communing with our spirit and with God. Paul’s relational language is intimate, pointing to a reality that is experienced at the deepest level within the context of a relationship of love. In our prayer lives, the Holy Spirit prays deeply beyond our deliberate efforts and beyond conscious awareness. The deepest desires of our hearts, not the superficial wants of this world, are prayed through the Spirit on our behalf as we are forever feeling incomplete, frustrated, and desiring of wholeness.
Our inner energy is forever pushing, forever desiring to be known, to be loved, and to be in oneness with the greatest love of all, namely, our Lord. Being overwhelmed by pressures of society, it is easy to feel lost itself in busyness, in “me-ness”, and in accumulation/ buying “stuff”, which leaves our lives lacking in depth and lacking in satisfaction and movement from emptiness to wholeness.
When we no longer know how to pray, the Spirit, in groans too deep for words, prays through us. “In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.” (Romans 8:27)
Our deepest prayers are wordless, spoken only in silence----both gratitude and tears. I need only lift my heart
to the Lord in silence as I despair in anger, frustration, disappointment, unforgiveness, and envy. So I take
heart, knowing the Holy Spirit within me is interceding on my behalf. Yes, I am inadequate in my own prayer,
but the Lord has sent His Spirit so that the Holy Spirit can do for me in my deepest relationship, what I
cannot. What a great God I have who has taken care of me and provided even for that inadequacy. How
great is our God!

URGENT NEED FOR OSHKOSH HOST FAMILIES / INDIVIDUALS
We are in need of generous families or individuals who are willing to host a Global Outreach student at Lourdes Academy, Oshkosh for the 2015-2016 school year. Students are juniors and come from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia. They arrive in early August and return home around June 15 at the end of the school year.
This is a Catholic program with an important mission: preparing young Catholic servant leaders to return to their homelands and make a difference in the Church, their schools, and society. Responsibilities include providing a home, food and transportation needs. This is a chance to give a deserving young student the experience of a lifetime.
For more information, please contact Barbara Tota-Boryczka (executive director) at (920) 540-3085; [email protected] or Fr. Larry Seidl (spiritual director) at (920) 412-0320; [email protected].
Lost and Found “Treasures”
Over the last several months, “lost
treasures” have accumulated in our Lost and Found bin. This weekend, we will
have a table in the coat room with all the lost treasures on it. If you have
lost an item, please take a moment or so to check the table. Any of these items not finding a home
will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES
Although no one I know has been able to definitively
find it in the sources, Francis of Assisi is supposed to
have told his disciples to “preach the Gospel; if
necessary, use words.” While no one can say just
where the quote is found, most agree that it sounds
like something Francis would have said.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”.
For Christians this command, which comes at the
very end of Matthew’s Gospel, constitutes our
‘marching orders’. What many people do not agree
on, however, is just how we are to do this. Are we
called to preach and teach in words? Or are we
called to preach and teach by our actions? How do
we “…make disciples…”? And where do we begin?
Well, it would probably be a good idea to begin right
where we are and, for many of us, where we are is at
work. So let’s start there.
Carolyn is a photographer. She photographs
weddings, graduations, family reunions, Bar
Mitzvahs, almost any family occasion you can think
of. Not an unusual profession. There are many small
studios like hers. What makes Carolyn different,
however, is that before she ever sets up a tripod or
positions a light she listens. She listens to brides and
graduates. She listens to grandmothers and proud
parents. Only then does she begin to photograph.
I once asked Carolyn why she takes so much time
with her subjects. I figured she could do a lot more
business, and make a lot more money, if she would
just use her head and be more efficient. Her answer
surprised me, although it probably shouldn’t have.
“Other people use their heads,” Carolyn said. “I
photograph by heart. To me, each person who comes
into my studio is Jesus, and I want Him to feel
welcome here.”
“Go…make disciples…”. When people hear that
Carolyn is a Christian they are seldom surprised.
They can tell by the way she does her work. If Jesus
were to walk into your workplace would He feel
welcome there? What does your work tell people
about you?
