DEAR PARISHIONERS...

Every year one of our Christmas trees at St. Raphael has lots of beautiful angel ornaments on it. Parishioners, especially

those who have recently joined, are welcome to donate an angel ornament for this special tree. Just bring it to the counter in the gathering space. Then come in during Christmas to check out all the neat angel ornaments and see if you

can find yours. Keep in mind that help is needed to decorate the church on Friday, December 20, 2:00pm - 7:00pm.

How is your advent homework coming? That is what I called it, as I handed out the blue book (6 minutes of prayer a day) and/or a CD ("7 Levels of Intimacy") to RE parents, when they picked up their children. Please let me know how these

materials are working for you and pass the CD when you are done with it.

Today we start the basket raffle. It is a fund raiser for Day by Day Shelter and Bella Clinic. Please note the local

merchants that have donated towards these baskets and given the opportunity, please personally thank them. This week

we have an opportunity to donate to the fund for Retired Religious and priests. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

This past Wednesday, December 4, marked the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution on the Sacred

Liturgy. This document called for an honest evaluation of the effectiveness of the Mass in the Church as a whole and marked a great change in our celebration of the Mass as well. The document describes mass as the “the source and sum-

mit” of parish life, it brought us to the vernacular language (change from Latin to the language of the local people), called for more lay participation, turned the altars so that priests faced the people, and much more. This is why we continually

ask for more involvement in our liturgies. As we approach holy days (like this Monday, Dec. 9th ) and Christmas, if you are one of our ministers, please sign up to help out.

Happy Advent, Fr. Doug

PS: Thank you to all that have made donations toward Typhoon disaster relief, military diocese donations, and our medical

mission trip coming up in January. I know that this parish gave $7,565 towards the disaster relief and monies continue to come in for the other opportunities. Thank you!

Thought for the day… Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have.

This weekend, Diocese of Green Bay parishioners will have the opportunity to support the retirement needs of sisters,

brothers and priests through the Retirement Collection, which includes the Diocesan Priests' Retirement and the National Retirement Fund for Religious. "Through the years, so many of us have been touched by the faithful witness of many

sisters, brothers and priests through our Catholic schools, hospitals and parishes," says Father Tom Long, Vicar for Ministers for the Diocese of Green Bay. "So many served with great devotion and dedication, but received little financial compensation

in return. Now, in recent years, we have the opportunity to thank them for their great service. Even in their elder years,

they continue to inspire and challenge all of us to deepen our faith and our commitment to serve those most in need. Our support of them allows this witness to continue."

Retirement Needs Significant

The retirement needs are significant. Today, there are more than 34,000 members of religious orders in the United States

over the age of 70, with about 16,700 under the age of 70 able to support them. Since the inception of the national collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious in 1988, Catholics around the country have been most generous, donating

$698 million over the past 25 years. The Diocese of Green Bay has been a national leader in contributions. Here in our diocese, the majority of our diocesan priests are over the age of 70. Those who are able, continue to serve

sacramentally in our parishes. This collection will also benefit them.

More than $463,000 Donated in 2012

Last year, $260,563 was donated to the National Retirement Fund for Religious and $203,316 was donated to our

Diocesan Priests' Retirement. We are grateful for this

generosity.

Parishioners are able to donate to one or both causes. Envelopes are available in this weekend’s bulletins , or a gift

may be made through the Catholic Foundation online

at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give.

AFTERSHOCK ATTENDS NATIONAL CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE

On November 21-24 three members of the Aftershock team attended NCYC in Indianapolis, Indiana. They joined

with 38 others from the Green Bay Diocese as a pilgrimage. The event was attended by more than 22,000 youth!

Can you imagine? The participants were more than on fire when they returned to Oshkosh on November 24. The

only thing we would like to see change is that in November of 2015 (the next NCYC) we take a bus full of youth

from St. Raphael’s Parish. The adult leaders will commit to making this happen for all teens interested. Here is

what this year’s participants had to say;

“It amazed me to see 23,000

teens in Mass and to be able

to hear a pin drop, to see five

thousand attend adoration,

and hundreds of people

following Jesus as

Fr. Schuster processed

through the halls with the

Eucharist! And to hear the

echoes of 23,000 people say

amen! It built up my faith by

witnessing the youth on fire

for their faith.

Rosaries for mission. Would you like to learn how to tie Rosaries? It really is a great way to give back and

it’s easy. We will meet for one hour or so to learn “how to” then you can either make them at home or meet

once per month with the group. Grades 6-12 encouraged to come. It’s a great time to relax and chat with

friends. Details and forms can be found in the gathering space kiosk or contact the youth minister Tanya

DECEMBER 8, 2013 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT | 5

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Is. 11:1-10, Ps. 72: 1-17, Rom. 15: 4-9, Matt. 3:1-12)

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” ---Matt. 3:3

If you’re like me, you’ve made choices that you wish could be “do-overs”. When recalling decisions made, I realize that they have led me to various people, places, and events in my life. Some of these have led to positive experiences and others, well, not so much. These are the ones that have resulted in “crooked lines”; perhaps it is the long way around, the scenic path, that takes a bit longer yet is the route of greater spiritual and emotional growth. One of the prayers that I have used for years sounds something like this: “Lord, I feel like I’ve made the wrong decision, and now I can’t back up. Please help me to deal with where I am and bring about your will in these circumstances, this situation.” The mystery of it is that God uses where I find myself in a way that helps me to grow AND further His Kingdom.

“God writes straight with crooked lines.” Our journey in spiritual growth and through this world is certainly not a straight line. The same sins can take a stronghold in our lives so that we spiral spiritually to the same spot we once struggled with, but now we’re more aware. In our weakness, God invites us to grow in our dependence on Him. Often I find myself humbled by the fact that I have made the same mistakes, committed the same sin; I am tough on myself psychologically and spiritually for being weak and experiencing my humanness.

The mystery of God includes the grace we receive as He, whose love for us is constant, walks with us and blesses us in ways that sometimes include pain and suffering. We are in a spiritual labor of birthing wisdom. We need to be open to God’s action in our lives and trust that He is right there with us. While the map of our lives appears to include crooked lines, God in his omniscient and loving way, invites us to abide and mature in deeper relationship with Him. We are invited to trust in a more intense level than ever before. After all, we live life on a continuum of learning to surrender our trust to His abiding love and care for us. The ultimate surrender will be into His loving arms in our last breath.

I find this comforting. I can make “mistakes” in my choices, yet God will straighten my path as He is with me wherever we go, whatever choice I make. I need only turn to Him, and He will gently invite me to trust, that is, to surrender to Him so that He can make my path straight, straight to His heart.

Lord Jesus, help me to trust you even more to make straight lines out of my choices so that I am closer to you even though I take the scenic path. Thank you for creating something beautiful out of my life’s choices.

Betty Schwandt - Pastoral Associate

Immaculate Conception Paul Turner

“The Immaculate Conception” is a title for Mary, the mother of Jesus. The expression means that Mary was conceived without sin. The conviction that Jesus was born of a virgin is a distinct belief, even though many Catholics erroneously think that the Immaculate Conception refers to Jesus.

Contributing to the confusion is the celebration of the Immaculate Conception during the season of Advent. While the faithful are preparing to honor the birth of Jesus, we commemorate the conception of Mary. The choice of December 8 for the Immaculate Conception does not directly relate to Advent; it corresponds more to the traditional date for the feast of the birth of Mary, September 8, which coincides with the dedication of a Jerusalem church in honor of the mother of Mary. The feast for the conception of Mary is backed up from that day nine months. In a similar way we celebrate the Annunciation on March 25, nine months before the birth of Jesus.

Belief in the Immaculate Conception asserts that God preserved Mary from all sin from the moment of her conception, thus preparing a pure vessel for the incarnation of the Son. This belief is not expressly contained in the Scriptures, but it enjoys a widespread following in the church’s tradition. Although the Immaculate Conception of Mary has been affirmed since the earliest centuries of Christianity, it was not formally proclaimed a dogma of the church until 1854. December 8 is now a holy day of obligation in the United States, which is placed under Mary’s patronage with this title.

When Mary is depicted as the Immaculate Conception, she is often shown wearing a crown of stars as the woman in Revelation 12 and standing on a snake, reversing the temptation of Eve. Mary, the Immaculate Conception, is the exalted queen of heaven who manifests God’s power over sin.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (IS 11:1-10; ROM 15:4-9; MAT 3:1-12)

Bev and Trudy are friends. They work for the same

company, often spending lunchtimes together

shopping or running errands. They live near one

another and take the same bus, usually arriving at

the office laughing and out of breath. Both are

active in community outreach – Bev with a group of

people in the planning stages of building a shelter

for homeless men; Trudy on the Board of an

organization that collects and distributes winter

coats to school children in the area.

The fruits of their labor – both 9-5 and volunteer – are

many. The shelter that Bev’s group is building will

house 25 men and offer 12-step and other resources

to many more and just last month Trudy’s

organization distributed 52 coats to children who

would otherwise have gone without. Each is commit-

ted to “…judge[ing] the poor with justice…” and to

“…judge[ing] aright for the land’s afflicted”, and

their work will continue to serve the needs of the

oppressed and marginalized for many winters to

come. In fact, Trudy and Bev are such good friends

and work so well together that many people are

surprised to learn that one is Catholic and the other

Jewish.

“May the God of endurance and encouragement

grant you to think in harmony with one another…”

While as Christian and Jew, Bev and Trudy practice

their religions differently, they continue to worship

God in harmony with one another with wisdom,

understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and

fear of the Lord – and God is present. “A wolf and a

lamb, a leopard and a kid, a calf and a young lion

and a cow and a bear – if all these can live together

in peace,” they’re quick to point out, “then surely

two secretaries, one Jewish and one Catholic,

should have no problem at all!”

Hanukkah began on Thanksgiving Day this year, and

Christmas is only 2–½ weeks away. As I write these

words world leaders continue to discuss ways to

bring about peace in the Middle East. With them we

pray: “May the God of endurance and

encouragement grant [us] to think in harmony with

one another.” Amen…

Every so often someone will call and request a Prayer Shawl. Prayer Shawls are knit and/or crocheted by women in our parish. Each is crafted with prayer, soft yarn (provided, along with a variety of patterns) and love. If you would like to be a part of this ministry - or if you would like to request a Prayer Shawl - call the parish office at 233-8044 for more information. (Please be advised that the Prayer Shawl Ministry will not have meetings in December and January.)
