We welcome you to September in the

Blackstone Heritage Corridor!

It’s all water powered! The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor is most notably known as the Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution and the first place of tolerance and diversity in the country. In the fall, its many other attributes come vividly into focus as the crispness of autumn grows from the last warmth of summer.

Explore our exceptional National Heritage Corridor during a season of anticipation. Every living thing is in preparation mode. Squirrels and chipmunks are gathering food for the winter. Canada Geese from Hudson Bay are arriving in flocks for their winter sojourn in these warmer climes. The trees and shrubs are bursting forth with one last push of colorful life before winter. Even the waterways seems to pulse and bubble with a last bit of energy before the freeze. It’s a great time to be in the Blackstone Valley.

The 25 cities and towns in the Blackstone Heritage Corridor roll out the welcome mat in September. Each has historical ambiance, interesting eateries and lively pursuits. Each hosts free, guided experiences and entertaining special events all month long. Join us for walks, bike tours, boat rides, performances, harvest traditions, and more!

20th Annual dragon Boat Races & Taiwan day festival X Pawtucket, RI: Festival Pier, Tim Healy Way

It’s the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Dragon Boat Races & Taiwan Festival! Join the thousands of people who attend each year for great competition, family fun, and an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture. Professional club teams and local corporate/amateur teams will race in one of six new boats from Taipei as well as current Taiwanese-style dragon boats. The Taiwan Day Festival is filled with cultural performances, many arts and crafts tables, and the always-popular dumpling-eating contest. Join NPS Ranger Mark Mello at the Kelly House for a pet-friendly walk around the park. Hike Metacomet Land Trust Hop Brook Conservation Area ■ Blackstone, MA: Parking lot across from

249 Mendon St. Take a guided hike through Hop Brook Conservation Area - a protected forest parcel with wooded vernal pools and a 200-year-old sawmill site - with Blackstone Heritage Corridor Trail Ambassador Tom Bik. Walking conditions are moderate and the walk will be paced for all participants. Metacomet Land trust has recently constructed an entrance driveway and parking lot to make this 129-acre landscape more accessible. A sign now marks the entrance. Rain date September 8. Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy Guided Hike l Providence, RI: 120 Killingly St.,

Ball Field Parking Lot NHC, along with Providence Parks Department, invite you to escape your work week and for a guided hike at the highest point in Providence at Neutaconkanut Hill. Enjoy scenic views of the city and overlook the Oxbow Turn in the Pocasset River. The location is also the Providence Foundries shown to Roger Williams in 1636. Uxbridge Historical Society Open House at the John farnum House X Uxbridge, MA: 34 Mendon St.

Come tour the oldest house in Uxbridge, the Coronet John Farnum House, built in 1710. The first town meeting took place at this house in 1727, when Uxbridge incorporated after separating from Mendon. Guided tours explore the history of the house and examine what life was like in the early 18th century. A bed used by George Washington that was located at the Taft Tavern on Sutton Street in Uxbridge is a highlight of the tour. Sponsored by Uxbridge Historical Society.

Blackstone Valley Paddle Club Paddle at the Gorge L

Blackstone, MA: Blackstone Gorge, end of County St. Join the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club for a leisurely paddle from the Blackstone Gorge to the Millville Lock. Suitable for all levels of experience. The Gorge offers a boat ramp where canoes and kayaks can be launched into the river above the dam. The river above the Gorge is effectively a pond for a little over a mile up river. One of the old locks from the Blackstone Canal is located along this stretch of the river. This trip features a short ride along the Blackstone River Bikeway that connect two former Londsdale Company Farms. The ride will start at the Capt. Wilbur Kelly House Museum of Transportation and traverse the bikeway to the site of the old Lonsdale Drive-In. Riders will then return to the Kelly House. Approximately 7 miles, round trip. Turner Reservoir Hike E. Providence, RI: Pleasant St. Asphalt Parking Lot/Bus Turnaround at State Line Take a hike around the Turner Reservoir with Ernie

Germani from BHC’s Trail Ambassadors. The reservoir was created in the 1930’s from the Ten Mile River and features a 3-mile loop trail that is mostly wooded, but includes boardwalks and some road walking. The guided hike includes a quick visit to Bridgham Farm before stopping by the dam and waterfall. This hike will be done at a relaxed pace and should take about two hours. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RIVER – WE’RE WATER POWEREd! The Blackstone River runs 46 miles from Worcester, MA, to Pawtucket, RI, and drops 438 feet in that distance, narrowing and surging the power of its waters to make it, at one time, the most productive river in the world.

The present day headwaters are created by wetlands and small brooks that feed into the tributaries and the main stem of the river. The watershed includes 1,300 acres of lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Over time, the course of the Blackstone River has been greatly altered, manipulated by industry to power the mills. The “hardest working river” was left impaired by industrialization but, in recent years, great progress has been made to clean it up.

Worcester, MA: Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook, 414 Massasoit Rd. Enjoy a nice hike through the sanctuary on the Smiley Face Trail to the Blackstone River Bikeway. From there we will walk up to the new Blackstone Heritage Corridor Visitor Center and explore the new boardwalks of the adjacent Blackstone Gateway Park. Hike is 4 miles total and easy walking. No steep terrain. A van will be waiting to drive participants back to the starting point at the Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and Conservation Center on Massasoit Road. The Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program is a highly respected program of the National Park Service and is administered locally by Blackstone Heritage Corridor. The VIP program aims to create a mutually-rewarding experience for the volunteer and the National Park Service by matching individual interests with the many different venues, groups and events.

BHC provides program coordination, recruiting, training, and networking opportunities for volunteers that support both the National Heritage Corridor, the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, and our partners. With over 200 core volunteers, the Volunteers-In-Parks program is a dynamic part of the fabric of the Blackstone Valley.
