The Lord Jesus Brings Division on Earth for the Sake of Peace with God in

Heaven

False prophets preach what their hearers want to hear, promising peace

even when the Lord has spoken “war, famine, and pestilence” (Jer. 28:8).

But if “the LORD has truly sent the prophet,” he speaks what the Lord has

spoken, and “the word of that prophet comes to pass” (Jer. 28:9). The

preaching of God’s Law is hard, because it confronts sin, brings it to light

and makes it worse, “sinful beyond measure,” thereby “producing death”

in the sinner (Rom. 7:13). But through our Baptism into Christ, “we are

released from the law, having died to that which held us captive” (Rom.

7:6). Now we belong “to him who has been raised from the dead, in order

that we may bear fruit for God” (Rom. 7:4). Belonging to Him puts us at

odds with the world and divides us from all earthly ties, not only from our

human family, but each person from his own life. For Christ does not

come “to bring peace, but a sword” (Matt. 10:34). Yet, whoever takes up

his cross to follow Christ, and “loses his life” for Christ’s sake, finds new

life in Him (Matt. 10:38–39).

Invocation

The sign of the cross T may be made by all in remembrance of their

Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth.

P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer

and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ

in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness

and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in

thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our

sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the

infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the

sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead

us to everlasting life. Amen.

P Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be

Your children and gathered us into Your one, Holy Church, in which

You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through

Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive

our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.

C and in your righteousness are exalted.

P For you are the glory of their strength;

C by your favor our horn is exalted.

The Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 28:5–9 (ESV)

A: The Old Testament Reading for The Third Sunday After Pentecost is

from the 28th

chapter of the prophet Jeremiah.

5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the

presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the

house of the LORD, 6and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD

do so; may the LORD make the words that you have prophesied come

true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house

of the LORD, and all the exiles. 7Yet hear now this word that I speak in

your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who

preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and

pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9As for the

prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to

pass, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: Romans 7:1–13 (ESV)

A The Epistle Reading is from the 7th

chapter of St. Paul's Epistle to the

Romans.

1Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who

know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he

lives? 2Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he

lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another

man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from

that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the

body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been

raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while

we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were

at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released

Page 6: T FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 28, A+D 2020splcms.org/images/services/200628.pdf · come “to bring peace, but a sword” (Matt. 10:34). Yet, whoever takes up his cross to

5

from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve

not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. 7What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it

had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have

known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in

me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9I was

once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin

came alive and I died. 10

The very commandment that promised life

proved to be death to me. 11

For sin, seizing an opportunity through the

commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12

So the law is

holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. 13

Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It

was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin

might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might

become sinful beyond measure.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

The Holy Gospel: Matthew 10:34–42 (ESV)

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 10h chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

34[Jesus said:] “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the

earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

Page 7: T FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 28, A+D 2020splcms.org/images/services/200628.pdf · come “to bring peace, but a sword” (Matt. 10:34). Yet, whoever takes up his cross to

6

35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter

against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36

And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37

Whoever

loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever

loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38

And whoever

does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39

Whoever

finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me

receives him who sent me. 41

The one who receives a prophet because he

is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a

righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a

righteous person’s reward. 42

And whoever gives one of these little ones

even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he

will by no means lose his reward.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ

The Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and

earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the

Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living

and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

P Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near to the Lord’s throne of grace

and pray as He has commanded us, trusting in the Lord to hear the

prayers of His people and answer our petitions according to His

mercy.

P O most merciful God, Lord of heaven and earth, we pray You to so

rule and govern Your Church and all her pastors and ministers that

she may be preserved in the pure doctrine of Your saving Word,

defended against all adversity, and protected from all adversaries,

that thereby faith may be strengthened and love increased in us.

Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Grant health, wisdom and integrity to all in authority over us,

especially to the president of the United States, the governor of this

state, the Congress, all legislative bodies, and all judges and

magistrates. Endow them with Your Spirit and with respect for Your

Word, that they would serve Your good pleasure for the maintenance

of righteousness and the punishment of wickedness so that we all

may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty.

According to Your gracious will, turn the hearts of our enemies and

make them to walk with us in humility and peace. Lord, in your

mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Grant to those in trouble, want, sickness, anguish of labor, peril of

death or any other adversity the healthful Spirit of Your grace for

healing, strength, comfort and relief. Bless especially those who

suffer for the sake of Your name and Your Word. Hear us on behalf

of those we name in our hearts. Give them courage to stand firm in

their afflictions and patience until the day of Your deliverance. Lord,

in your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Preserve us from pestilence and every evil. Give to us favorable

weather and cause the fruits of the earth to prosper, that we may

enjoy them in due season and offer You praise and thanksgiving for

all Your goodness to us. Lend Your blessing to all honorable

vocations and honest industry, that we may serve where our skills

and abilities may be of good use. Bless the arts and music, that we

may please You and be encouraged by all that is good, right, true

and beautiful. Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P Give to all husbands and wives grace to live together in love and

faithfulness. Bless the homes and families of Your people, that they

may be places where Your name is honored and love is nurtured.

Give Your special grace to the widowed, the orphan, all mothers with

child, the aged and the infirm, that we may grant them comfort, aid

and protection. Lord, in your mercy,

P Lord, in your mercy,

C hear our prayer.

P All these things for which You would have us ask of You, we pray You

to grant to us for the sake of the bitter sufferings and death of Jesus

Christ, our Lord, through whom we are bold to call You Father and in

whose name we pray, trusting in Your mercy and confident that You

will give answer to our prayers; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Service of the Sacrament Preface

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in

all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting

God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death

and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way

of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all

the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name,

evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have

had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever

believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and

Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all

their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You

promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our

Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us

through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully

eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of

forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and

blood.

Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

The Lord’s Prayer

C Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give

us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the

disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for

you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had

given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this

cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for

the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in

remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C Amen.

Distribution of Christ’s Body and Blood

In the Sacrament of the Altar, we receive the real, genuine body and blood of Jesus Christ, which hung on the cross and flowed from his veins. Participation in The Sacrament limited to those who are active members in good standing in a congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod or who have spoken personally to the pastor.

Scripture teaches that those who receive the Sacrament of the Altar should be fully repentant of all sin in their lives. Anyone who
