Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Farnham, NY February 2020 February 2020 Dear Holy Cross Family, February is upon us and is known as the month of hearts, chocolate, cards and love. The red and pink hearts are decorating our tables in the fellowship hall and Valentine’s Day is around the corner. I guess you can say “Love is in the air!” I used to spend hours when I was a child coloring doilies for my Valentine cards. I loved putting them in envelopes and giving them to others. It meant so much to me to make people smile and feel loved. As I grew older and became a young adult, teacher, a wife, mom and grand- mother, the meaning of love took on a deeper meaning. As I went to church and heard God’s Word I realized His Love was one of such incredible depth and strength. I learned about Christ ministry and how he called us to love one another. I listened to how we as God’s people can help share God’s love and witnessed people joining together as the church. On February 9 th , Pastor Timothy Hoyer will join us for a 4:00 pm potluck dinner and meeting. It will be an opportunity for us to share the mission and outreach we are involved with and how we share God’s love with others. We will discuss our ministry and our vision for Holy Cross and its future ministry. As we join together may we all reflect on how we love one another and bring the gifts of our congregation to others. On February 26 th , we will gather for Ash Wednesday services at 12:00 and 7:00 at Holy Cross with the people of Parish of Our Lady. Ashes will be placed on our heads and we will be reminded that we are dust and to dust we shall return. Our worship together is another time for us to reflect on the love of Christ in our lives. Our Lenten journey will begin and we will enter a journey of reflection and repentance. As we enter this month of February let’s pause and reflect on Christ’s love in our lives. As we read scripture may we hear how we are being called to love others. May we walk together to share Christ’s love as we witness the depth of his love in our day to day lives and actions. “Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12 Walking with you, Lynn Whitworth, Synodically Authorized Minister THE FISHERMAN Come join us! Dear Holy Cross Family,

February is upon us and is known as the month of hearts, chocolate, cards and love. The red and pink hearts are decorating our tables in the fellowship hall and Valentine’s Day is around the corner. I guess you can say “Love is in the air!” I used to spend hours when I was a child coloring doilies for my Valentine cards. I loved putting them in envelopes and giving them to others. Ash Wednesday – February 26, 2020

On Ash Wednesday we begin our forty-day journey toward Easter with a day of fasting and

repentance. Marking our foreheads with dust, we acknowledge that we die and return to the

earth. At the same time, the dust traces the life-giving cross indelibly marked on our

foreheads at baptism. While we journey through Lent to return to God, we have already

been reconciled to God through Christ. We humbly pray for God to make our hearts clean

while we rejoice that “now is the day of salvation.” Returning to our baptismal call, we

more intentionally bear the fruits of mercy and justice in the world.

Please be sure to fill out a communion record card at least once a year.

It is important for the church record keeping. They are located in the pew racks and may be

handed to an usher as you come to communion

Operation a tote is located in the narthex for your

Good Neighbor donations of cereal.

Community Happenings

Continuing our Prayers for our Schools The Lakeshore Association of Churches has joined together to pray for our schools, children, staff and all involved in education. Holy Cross has volunteered to pray always but especially to focus our prayers for schools at our Sunday service and on Mondays. Each local church will take a day to focus on schools. As you are praying in your daily devotional time, please add a special prayer for our schools. Please join us by using the prayer printed in your weekly bulletin.

Friendship Corner- From 10:30-2:30 on the first Thursday of each month at First Church in Evans on Route 5 is providing a Respite Care Program for individuals with dementia. Holy Cross has committed to help prepare and serve the lunch for February, March, April and May. Council has approved to commit to helping support this program and will launch a special envelope for donations to help with the food and purchase of supplies needed. Wooden chairs with arms are needed to assist the guests with sitting and standing. Please keep your eyes and ears open for announcements providing details of how and when we will be helping. This is a great way to reach out to the community. Please share this information with anyone that may have a family member in need of the program. Please see Lynn or Marcia if you would like to volunteer.

A Mid-Winter pick-me-up!

“After completing nearly 40years of continuous active-duty service with the

U.S. Army, I have seen hundreds of thousands of examples of what is right with

America: its men and women in uniform. I was incredibly privileged for so long to

have served with, Marines, airmen, sailors and DoD civilians. They do more than

what is asked of them, seldom checking the clock but always checking to make

sure the task or mission is complete to or above expectations, always giving their

all.

Our armed forces have never been better—better trained, better equipped

or better led, and they will never let America down. I am so proud of them all.”

Jeff Mellinger, Army Command Sergeant Major

(Vietnam War draftee, retired in 2011, after 39 years in the Army).

Coffee Hour and Fellowship - Coffee Hour Hosts

Coffee Hours after worship service on Sunday mornings have been well-received. They add to the welcome and hospitality here at Holy Cross when we can leisurely sit and sip our favorite beverage, nibble on delicious goodies, and chat with our church family members.

It was brought to our attention that a job description has never been formulated to let hosts know what is expected of them. What follows is a listing of those directions. A list will also be permanently placed in the kitchen. Diane Reynolds (913-0930) has agreed to chair the signup for hosts in 2020. At present, hosts are needed for all Sundays after February 2nd. You might team up with another individual or two, so no one has to do the hosting alone.

Before worship service Set out treats on serving table (covered with plastic wrap or foil if needed).

Set out creamer, sugar, tea bags, and hot chocolate on beverage table.

Prepare any cold beverages (including pitcher of ice water) so they are ready to take from refrigerator after worship.

Be sure there are plates, napkins and plastic forks/spoons on serving table, along with free will offering basket.

Check that there are enough ceramic mugs and paper cups on the beverage table.

Be sure coffee and water urns are plugged in to power strip and turned on before going in to worship service. (You will not have to make that coffee. It will already be set up when you arrive). After worship service

Uncover treats and put cold beverages out on the side table.

If you have used the oven, be sure it has been turned off.

Wash, dry and put away mugs and dishes.

Dump leftover coffee and water, dispose of coffee grounds in garbage, and wipe out urns. Leave them uncovered on kitchen counter to finish drying. If small coffeemaker in kitchen is still on, unplug it, dump out that coffee and used grounds, and rinse out the carafe. Leave lid of the small coffeemaker open to dry.

Put leftover cold beverages in the refrigerator.

Check on bathroom trash, gather all garbage and take out to rolling tote outside back kitchen door. Be sure that door is relocked when you come back inside.

Put new trash bags in waste bins where needed.

Wash off tablecloths and straighten chairs. Vacuum or sweep up crumbs where needed.

If any supplies are needed for the next week, let Diane Reynolds know so she can replace them.

Thank you for your service as Coffee Hour Hosts today!

Growing through God’s Love

As we see the snow flying it is hard to believe that soon Lent will be

here, Spring will be here and we will be planning outdoor work to be

completed around our church. This year under the coordination of Jeff

Papke, Holy Cross will be planting a church garden in glory to God.

The garden will be located starting at the right side of the garage and

will face the side entrance to church off the parking lot. It will feature

raised garden beds, an archway and benches. This space will be open to

the church and the community for a place of prayer, reflection and

peace. This is an outreach plan to welcome others to come, be still and know God.

This garden will be a witness to all that we as people of God reach out to share God’s love with others. All are

welcomed to help with this project along with giving towards the cost of stone, wood, plants and dedication

plaques which will be displayed on the archway. A diagram of the layout of the garden is included in our

newsletter. We are also asking for suggestions for the garden’s name. Envelopes will be available for those

interested in giving. Please see Jeff if you want to help with the groundbreaking, planting and labor.

Come, share, love, grow….

Name our Garden…
