GIVE TO THE ANNUAL CAMPAIGNDuring the holiday season and the end of the calendar year we think about the gifts in our lives and the gifts we give others Through worship education Tikkun Olam music special programs and so much more Temple Sinai gives our community a place to call our Jewish home At Temple Sinai our base membership contributions while generous and thoughtful are not enough to fully underwrite programs and staff at a level to adequately address the needs of our community as reflected in community surveys and our congregationrsquos strategic plan The Annual Campaign bridges the gap As of December 18 we are over 60 of the way towards reaching our ambitious $205000 goal for the Annual Campaign but we can only reach our goal with your help If you have yet to participate in the 2017-2018 Annual Campaign please consider a gift that strengthens and enriches our community today If you have already given thank you - your support is meaningful Should you wish to enhance your commitment supplemental donations are encouraged

PRESIDENTrsquoS MESSAGE

Happy 2018 fellow congregants I enter 2018 with renewed energy thanks in part to the URJrsquos inspiring 2017 Biennial held in December in Boston

Every other year the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) organizes a multi-day gathering of members of the Reform movement - clergy lay leaders congregants individuals ndash to learn discuss decide celebrate pray sing and more This yearrsquos gathering of 5500

people focused on six issues ndash community action diversity innovation faith and reimagining Jewish life Session speakers included Rabbi Roos and board member Liz Dunst who is Chair of the URJ Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism The program guide alone was more than 200 pages and by the time I left mine was well dog-eared with notes and ideas for our board and committees More to come in the months ahead

The Temple Sinai board and committees continue their hard work on behalf of the temple The board reached an important milestone in December -100 participation in the annual fund And our member contributions are the strongest ever Thank you everyone who gave and to those who plan to do so in the months ahead No amount is too small

Longer term we completed a study looking at the future needs of the temple both physical and programmatic and will next explore the timing and mechanisms to support those needs The board is investing considerable time and energy to ensure Temple Sinai continues to thrive and serve our growing diverse membership now at more than 1200 households

The board will be spending January and February on its usual business ndash membership finance standing committees ndash as well as making headway with other work Those areas include communications building (Green Team) annual board nominating committee and social action Social justice issues in particular continue to be a stand-out role for Temple Sinai in the Jewish community nationwide Our members have much to be proud of by the work of the clergy lay leaders and volunteers on issues related to immigration refugees racial justice gun violence prevention and more A special shout out to Steve Klitzman who chairs the templersquos Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and has worked tirelessly giving voice and action to this important work

Much done much to do All the best for a healthy happy start to 2018

RABBIrsquoS MESSAGEWhen the Blessed Holy One created the first human He took him and led him round all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said to him ldquoLook at My works how beautiful and praiseworthy they are And all that I have created it was for you that I created it Pay attention that you do not corrupt and destroy My world if you corrupt it there is no one to repair it after you-Kohelet Rabbah 713

As we enter the cold dark days of winter if often feels as if we are battling against the

natural world Spending as little time as possible outdoors sealing our doors and windows to make sure that cold air does not creep through the cracks And yet here in the United States it is in the midst of the winter season that we observe Tu BiShrsquovat our celebration of the trees This year Tu BiShrsquovat (meaning the 15th of the Hebrew month Shrsquovat) begins at sundown on January 30th and ends at sundown on January 31st

A lesser known hit among the Jewish holidays Tu BiShrsquovat is often called the birthday of the trees According to the Bible we are not to eat from trees until they are 5 years old In order to measure a treersquos age the 15th of Shrsquovat was determined as all of the trees birthday

Tu BiShrsquovat was then reimagined in the 16th Century when the Kabbalists created a Tu BiShrsquovat seder using wine fruits and nuts Their seder brought together these elements of the natural world with the symbols and beliefs of Kabbalah

In modern times we have re-imagined Tu BiShrsquovat once again using it as an opportunity to recommit to protecting the earth Our annual celebration of the trees demands that we consider our obligation to protecting the environment This year we have seen the impacts of wild weather destructive fires and floods monstrous storms displacing people from their homes These events not only remind us of the necessity of working to combat climate change but also of the power of nature in our lives

On Friday January 26th we will honor Tu BiShrsquovat at Temple Sinai with a special guest speaker Tommy Wells Director of the DC Department of Energy and Environment will speak about water issues in our region and ways that we can take action to protect and conserve this sacred resource (And if this isnrsquot enough of an incentive to attend we will continue our tradition of serving a local season vegetarian feast following the service) Join us as we celebrate the earth and recommit ourselves to protecting our natural resources

Tu BiShrsquovat is a reminder that even in the darkest coldest days of winter the natural world is essential to our lives It is a reminder that we must ldquopay attentionrdquo- we must work to protect our natural resources And it is a reminder that it is up to each of us to repaid the world because as we read in Kohelet Rabbah ldquothere is no one to repair it after yourdquo

SINAICARES EXPANDS SERVICES TO MEMBERS

As the number of volunteers helping SinaiCares increases its scope and work are also expanding SinaiCares is a program that cuts across all committees and activities at Temple Sinai in an effort to build a caring community Named for Kathie Rabinovitz and with continued support from her family and others this vital in-reach program supports all Temple Sinai members by providing a range of services including rides to services visits to those

in need of company challahs to those who experience a loss and gifts to members at various Jewish holidays This year SinaiCares will offer a few additional services such as delivering new baby gift bags to our newest members and Yarzheit candles to those who are remembering an immediate family member who died in the preceding year We are also planning to make soup at Temple Sinai on February 25th which will be frozen and then available for clergy to take on visits to members

Tradition Community And The Progressive Jewish VoiceRosann Wisman

When I was growing up in Topeka Kansas (yes there are Jews in Topeka) I could never believe how much time my mother devoted to our small congregation the only congregation

in town She was a single mom with three kids who worked full time yet she took on almost every role needed at the temple Congregants at Temple Beth Sholom in Topeka became my extended family As a child I always felt at home there My Jewish identity became a central part of who I was but growing up I never imagined being very engaged in temple life When I moved to Washington in 1984 my mom said Rabbi Fred Reiner who had been the rabbi in Topeka was the new rabbi at Temple Sinai Rabbi Reinerrsquos connection to my family and my roots opened the door to my commitment to Temple Sinai

I have been a member of Temple Sinai for more than 30 years I have been honored to serve in many positions within the templersquos governance but my Sinai Story is about community and friendship Like many of you those early friendships were forged as my husband Michael and I enrolled our two sons in the Temple Sinai Nursery School Over the years Temple Sinai has been there for me and our family at both joyous and sorrowful times We have been surrounded by our Temple Sinai friends and today Temple Sinai is my familyrsquos community

There was another thing that I never quite understood about my mom As she got older she hardly ever missed a Friday evening service I didnrsquot get it today I understand Attending Shabbat services was her way to connect with her friends to be comforted by the familiarity of the melodies and words to take stock of the week that had just ended and take a breath before the next began I attend Shabbat services

more frequently nowhellipalthough not as often as my mom Our wonderful clergy always have something timely and interesting to share And itrsquos an easy and comforting way to spend the evening--no need for tickets no linesmdashand like exercising I always feel good afterwards

My mother also saw national and international events through a Jewish lens She wanted the progressive Reform Judaism voice and perspective to be a voice for justice and compassion around the world I know that without strong synagogues particularly Reform synagogues that Jewish voice would be diminished I am particularly proud that Temple Sinai and our clergy are leading the way as a model for the nation in social justice activism My Sinai Story is one that continues the values and traditions of my mom And as a member of Temple Sinai I am helping to ensure that progressive Judaism remains a guiding principle for future generations

SINAI HOUSEThe Bet Am was filled to capacity at the annual Homes amp Hearts Shabbat on Friday December 8 2017 Former resident and featured speaker ldquoTGrdquo inspired the attendees with her moving story of how Sinai House helped her achieve the American Dream of purchasing a home for her family TG left Ethiopia and was eventually granted asylum in the US Sinai House was able to help bring TGrsquos adult son to the US from Ethiopia and reunite him with his mother and two younger brothers after a 15-year separation TG and her three sons now live in their new home in Silver Spring Following the service everyone enjoyed Ethiopian food from Beteseb Restaurant while listening to the wonderful music from Peter Runk Julie Siegel Don Squires and Steve Zurier of the Middle Matzah Conspiracy

Music NotesA GRAND GIFT SINAI GETS A STUNNING STEINWAY

Some guys like to tinker with their cars -- check out the chassis rev up the engine kick the tires etc

For longtime Temple Sinai member Dan Snyder (zrdquol) pianos were his cars and of the finest make and model Snyderrsquos Rolls-Royces were Steinway concert grand pianos his every-tool-in-its-place garage was the immaculate salmon-colored high-ceilinged room in his Bethesda home that housed two such nine-foot gems

Snyder trained at Bostonrsquos famed Berklee College in classical and jazz music went on to a successful career in his familyrsquos real estate company But music in general and the pianos in particular were his passion He practiced assiduously every day of his life

Now Snyder who died suddenly of a heart attack in December 2016 at age 65 is posthumously sharing one of his coveted instruments with a wider audience For awhile before his unexpected death Snyder and his wife talked at some length about donating one of the grands from their living room to the temple Just before the high holidays this past fall Janet Shatz Snyder decided to do so

Janet wrestled about the donation for months She has no qualms now

ldquoJust from the reaction Irsquove gotten it actually makes me feel happierrdquo Janet said recently while seated in the room where her late husband would practice an hour a day on either one of the pianos ldquoI visualize Dan on the bimah just beaming about how good it soundsrdquo

Her sentiment is widely shared

Alex Colwell a local piano technician and tuner who took care of Snyderrsquos cherished possession for five years says the piano built in 1985 is without compare in many respects

Among the attributes single-piece ivory keys (as opposed to plastic key tops) and custom Canadian bass strings that resonate

ldquoHe wanted the best We got the best we could findrdquo Colwell said

Cantor Laura Croen is ecstatic about the new arrival She says its very presence adds to the value of the templersquos music experience

ldquoThe one we had before was a baby grandrdquo the cantor said ldquoIt just cannot compare with the richness the depth of sound that you can createrdquo Throughout the sanctuary and

beyond the sound is clear distinct and unmuffled Therersquos a weightiness

ldquoItrsquos one of those things that for anyone who is serious about being a listener or a pianist themselves they are just awed by this kind of concert-grand instrumentrdquo Croen said

She also described the new Steinway as ldquokind of a magnetrdquo It will draw performers and audiences she predicts

Neil Weston the templersquos talented accompanist is a big fan too Already congregants have spoken to him about the change in quality The concert grand is in a class by itself

ldquoThe most notable difference is that the old piano the sound from the piano dropped off significantly after you went about halfway back hellip it just sounded kind of weak whereas with this piano the sound has no problem extending to the back of the sanctuaryrdquo

Weston feels lucky At an October Shabbat ceremony officially welcoming the piano into the community and recognizing the Snyder family for its donation Weston noted that unlike others who play music a pianist cannot easily carry around his instrument

ldquoWersquore at the mercy of whatever instrument is at the venue where wersquore playingrdquo said Weston who plays in a variety of houses of worship and other sites throughout the region and beyond ldquoAs a pianist we do the best with what we haverdquo

He also stressed the notion that music can serve to elevate prayer In that sense the piano represents hiddur mitzvah -- the beautification or enhancement of a mitzvah often through physical aesthetics

In a way similar to those who love to tinker with their cars in their garages Weston is grateful that a concert grand Steinway is now housed under the roof of such a familiar place

ldquoItrsquos a privilege to play itrdquo he said ldquoItrsquos like a finely tuned automobilerdquo

Music NotesA GRAND GIFT SINAI GETS A STUNNING STEINWAY

Some guys like to tinker with their cars -- check out the chassis rev up the engine kick the tires etc

For longtime Temple Sinai member Dan Snyder (zrdquol) pianos were his cars and of the finest make and model Snyderrsquos Rolls-Royces were Steinway concert grand pianos his every-tool-in-its-place garage was the immaculate salmon-colored high-ceilinged room in his Bethesda home that housed two such nine-foot gems

Snyder trained at Bostonrsquos famed Berklee College in classical and jazz music went on to a successful career in his familyrsquos real estate company But music in general and the pianos in particular were his passion He practiced assiduously every day of his life

Now Snyder who died suddenly of a heart attack in December 2016 at age 65 is posthumously sharing one of his coveted instruments with a wider audience For awhile before his unexpected death Snyder and his wife talked at some length about donating one of the grands from their living room to the temple Just before the high holidays this past fall Janet Shatz Snyder decided to do so

Janet wrestled about the donation for months She has no qualms now

ldquoJust from the reaction Irsquove gotten it actually makes me feel happierrdquo Janet said recently while seated in the room where her late husband would practice an hour a day on either one of the pianos ldquoI visualize Dan on the bimah just beaming about how good it soundsrdquo

Her sentiment is widely shared

Alex Colwell a local piano technician and tuner who took care of Snyderrsquos cherished possession for five years says the piano built in 1985 is without compare in many respects

Among the attributes single-piece ivory keys (as opposed to plastic key tops) and custom Canadian bass strings that resonate

ldquoHe wanted the best We got the best we could findrdquo Colwell said

Cantor Laura Croen is ecstatic about the new arrival She says its very presence adds to the value of the templersquos music experience

ldquoThe one we had before was a baby grandrdquo the cantor said ldquoIt just cannot compare with the richness the depth of sound that you can createrdquo Throughout the sanctuary and

beyond the sound is clear distinct and unmuffled Therersquos a weightiness

ldquoItrsquos one of those things that for anyone who is serious about being a listener or a pianist themselves they are just awed by this kind of concert-grand instrumentrdquo Croen said

She also described the new Steinway as ldquokind of a magnetrdquo It will draw performers and audiences she predicts

Neil Weston the templersquos talented accompanist is a big fan too Already congregants have spoken to him about the change in quality The concert grand is in a class by itself

ldquoThe most notable difference is that the old piano the sound from the piano dropped off significantly after you went about halfway back hellip it just sounded kind of weak whereas with this piano the sound has no problem extending to the back of the sanctuaryrdquo

Weston feels lucky At an October Shabbat ceremony officially welcoming the piano into the community and recognizing the Snyder family for its donation Weston noted that unlike others who play music a pianist cannot easily carry around his instrument

ldquoWersquore at the mercy of whatever instrument is at the venue where wersquore playingrdquo said Weston who plays in a variety of houses of worship and other sites throughout the region and beyond ldquoAs a pianist we do the best with what we haverdquo

He also stressed the notion that music can serve to elevate prayer In that sense the piano represents hiddur mitzvah -- the beautification or enhancement of a mitzvah often through physical aesthetics

In a way similar to those who love to tinker with their cars in their garages Weston is grateful that a concert grand Steinway is now housed under the roof of such a familiar place

ldquoItrsquos a privilege to play itrdquo he said ldquoItrsquos like a finely tuned automobilerdquo
