DEAN’S WELCOME

it is my pleasure to welcome those who are curious about hungary’s single catholic university and its faculty of hu-manities and social sciences. The University – the only cent-er of excellence in private higher education since 2013 – is regularly listed among the 10 leading universities in national rankings since 2009. The faculty itself is the 7th most popular faculty nationwide. We are proud of this achievement, as we are of our university which is the only hungarian member of the international research University network, led by rad-boud University, nijmegen. a member of the international federation of catholic Universities, as well as of the european federation of catholic Universities, PPcU has demonstrated its commitment to the internationalization of studies and research. at the faculty, we offer a lot of opportunities for our students to study abroad because we believe in cross-cultural communications and in the growing importance of interna-tional experience. We also invite non-hungarian students to come to study in Budapest, in an international milieu of an old-new university where east meets West and tradition welcomes the future.

our University was founded in 1635 and has been continu-ously operating ever since. During the ottoman occupation, the most tragic years of our country’s history, archbishop of esztergom Péter Pázmány established the university, which proved to be of epochal significance in the history of education and religious culture in hungary. he was con-vinced that the university was the only way to guarantee the survival of the nation’s moral and intellectual culture. The university he founded, adopted both his intellectual heritage and his name. The university was moved to Buda from nagyszombat (now Trnava) by maria Theresa. in the spirit of the 1848 reforms the university became

a modern and autonomous educational centre. after a short period when its self-governance was limited by habs-burg absolutism, it regained its previous rights in 1860, and by the beginning of the 20th century it became one of the world’s finest universities. in 1921, after the grisly calami-ties of World War i and the restrictions imposed on it by the hungarian soviet republic, the “royal hungarian University of science” in Budapest was once again named after its foundet, Péter Pázmány, and it bore his name until 1950, when the communist state restructured the university by separating the faculties of medicine and Theology, and changed the name of the remaining institution to “eötvös

loránd University of sciences”. in 1993 the hungarian Par-liament registered Pázmány Péter catholic University (and along with it the faculty of humanities) as a university accredited by the state. We currently have five faculties: the faculty of Theology, the faculty of humanities, the faculty of law and Political sciences, the faculty of information Technology and the Postgraduate institute of canon law, which also has faculty status. The faculty of humani-ties opened in Budapest in 1992. Due to the increasing significance of the social sciences our faculty was renamed faculty of humanities and social sciences in 2012.

The Doctoral school in literary studiesThe workshops of the Doctoral school in literary studies focus on the detailed study of literary works, leading towards the crea-tion of new knowledge in the field. literature is examined from theoretical, historical, and cultural perspectives, and additional oppor-tunities are provided for students to become thoroughly acquainted with the literature of different eras (e.g. old hungarian literature) and different language areas (english, arabic, hebrew, German, slavic, latin, french, italian, spanish), and to conduct philological, literary historical and theoretical research.

The Doctoral school of linguisticsThe Doctoral school of linguistics offers doctoral programs in major core areas of linguistics, including syntactic theory, phonological theory, sociolinguistics, hungarian descrip-tive linguistics, historical linguistics, classical philology, arabic studies, english studies, Germanic studies, romance languages, slavic studies and theoretical linguistics. While doctoral (PhD) degrees in the majority of fields listed qualify graduates to work in higher education and conduct academic research, PhDs in theoretical linguistics also provide skills that can be marketed in indus-try and specialized fields such as research development.

The Doctoral school of historyThe motto of the Doctoral school of historical research is “he who knows not his past, has no future.” for the duration of the course the school covers a wide range of topics and methodological approaches that enable students to become thoroughly immersed in economic, social, cultural, or religious history. Within research workshops, students research topics of their choice in an in-depth and direct way, using primary sources so they may work towards new findings in the field.

The Doctoral school in Political TheoryThe Doctoral school in Political Theory is an interdisciplinary programme for postgradu-ate students interested in in-depth research either in political philosophy or in the social and political sciences. students with ma degrees from any of these academic disciplines are welcome to apply, and will get first a taught course in the history and theory of political thought. faculty include the best professors of the faculty and invited speakers as well. after finishing the class-room programme, candidates are required to write a research paper in a topic agreed on by a supervisor, who helps the research process with tutorials. They can choose from two subthemes (political philosophy, political and social sciences), and after a suc-cessful defence of the thesis will get a PhD diploma in either Philosophy or the Political and social sciences.

DOCTORAL DEGREES

at present the faculty offers accredited doctoral training programmes in the fields of literature, language, history and political theory.

PPcU is the only university in the country that is a member of the international research Universities network (irUn) – or indeed any international research network. research at the faculty of humanities and social sciences is conducted in virtually all the fields taught in the humanities, social sciences and pedagogy. The practice of involving students in faculty research is an integral part of training successive gen-erations of ma and PhD students. research activity takes a variety of forms: it is often the individual research of faculty instructors, but there is also work conducted in research

groups, often with the aid of grants and scholarships, and often through international cooperation. The framework for research is chosen in harmony with the nature of the project. a number of the research programmes conducted at the fac-ulty (both individual and group) are funded by the hungar-ian scientific research fund (oTKa), and we have a number of teachers who have been awarded the prestigious Bolyai research grants of the hungarian academy of sciences.

INTERNATIONALPARTNERSHIPSSCHOLARSHIPS, STUDY ABROADour faculty has a wide network of international partner institutions, a network that is continuously expanding. most of our partners are based in europe, and cooperation with them is greatly assisted by the european Union and the opportunities it provides.

each year through the erasmUs programme nearly a hundred students can spend from one semester to one academic year at some of the most famous universities in europe, such as the Katholieke Universiteit leuven, University of Worcester, Universität heidelberg, Università cattolica Del sacro cuore, institut catholique de Paris, and University of oslo. The number of partner institutions we operate with is growing year by year, and we have contacts with almost 100 foreign institutions within the scope of the erasmUs exchange program.

Pázmány is also involved in the ceePUs programme (central european exchange Program for University studies), which is a network of exchange programmes for central european he institutions. Through ceePUs our university maintains contacts with universities in vienna, olomouc, cracow, Banská Bystrica, sofia, and shkodra in albania. We do not merely send, but also receive students on study programmes from many countries in europe.

Page 12: t e nt iaet f d e l - Pázmány Péter Catholic University · ethics, media and communication) in a variety of combinations, since each teacher trainee is required to have two majors.

our partnerships are gradually spreading to overseas as well: we have closer and closer ties of collaboration with the University of notre Dame, saint louis University and saint Thomas University in the United states, besides fu Jen catholic University in Taiwan. in collaboration with our french partners (Université Paris-est créteil and institut catholique d’Études supérieures) we are able to offer joint master’s programmes, at the end of which our students receive a joint degree. We have close working relationships with the above institu-tions not only in terms of student exchanges, but also in terms of staff exchange and professional cooperation.

our university is a member of the international association of catholic Universities, and the international research Universi-ties network (irUn), in which ten european research univer-sities are members. The aim of this network is to maintain

and deepen partnerships between universities, run student exchange programmes, create scholarship opportunities and joint programmes of research, hold academic conferences and joint Ba and ma level courses. students are informed of scholarship opportunities at the faculty scholarship expo held at the beginning of the academic year and by the inter-national Department throughout the rest of the year. There is also a scholarship column on the faculty homepage.

CONTACT DETAILS AND ADDRESSES

UNIVERSITY CHAPLAINCYThe University chaplaincy is an integral part of the faculty of humanities and social sciences of Pázmány Péter catholic University. a Pastor may be found every day at the chap-laincy between 11:00 and 14:00 to serve student’s needs. The chaplaincy’s work can be divided into two major spheres of activity: weekly programmes and annually-held events. of the weekly programs i would first and foremost like to point out holy mass (8 p.m. sundays, Klotildliget church). mass is also held at all of the student halls on appropriate days of the week. on Wednesday evenings we hold special religious studies classes for students. The first part of the class dis-cusses theology and spiritual matters, whilst the second part is an informal conversation. Throughout the year, prepara-tion for the sacraments of initiation is announced: Baptism, first communion, and confirmation. if required, we hold special guidance classes for engaged couples by appoint-ment. We regularly visit the lia Primary school in Piliscsaba, where, in the afternoons, a number of students help socially handicapped children and young people in their studies. The christian student circle szósz (from szó szerint, „according to the Word”) runs under the auspices of the chaplaincy. members meet each week and organize a number of events for students at the faculty of humanities. The first of our

annually-held events is the „Path of the 56-ers”, a youth pilgrimage held at night in commemoration of the events of 23rd october 1956. Participants walk from csobánka to esztergom, and the event closes with holy mass at the esztergom Basilica crypt, the tomb of cardinal mindszenty. During advent we prepare for christmas by lighting candles each monday. every year we invite about 50 Transylvanian csángó and szekler children, whom the students provide with accommodation: we organize a week of acquaintance with the mother country for them as a christmas gift. in return, our young guests surprise their hosts each year with a short performance of their own making. another event dur-ing advent is the organization of a gift pack collection. The gifts are sent to orphanages in Transcarpathia, Transylvania and former southern territories of hungary. at Pentecost we participate in the pilgrimage to the csíksomlyó indulgence, where we arrive after a 50-kilometer walk holding the Zetelak cross. our largest enterprise is the alliance for life camp, where every year nearly 150 students camp with 450 orphans and needy young people from Transcarpathia, sze-kler land, csángó land, former southern territories, and the mother country. This camp has been held for several years at csobánka. our goal is to show the children what binds

them and us hungarians from the mother country together, and strengthen their feelings of belonging and solidarity. in addition, we try to show them that it is possible to live a fulfilled life, even amidst great difficulty. We hope that the various events and invited quests will provide a memorable few weeks of mental, spiritual and physical respite for the children. This summer, now for the fifth time, we performed the musical somewhere in europe on 20th august, at the amphitheater in Beregszász (Berehove, Ukraine). The play was unique in the way we included the residents of st. michael’s children’s home from the Transcarpathian village of rát among the players. i hope that our regular weekly programs and recurring annual events make an outstanding contribu-tion to the lives of our students, and help them to spiritually recharge themselves and spend several years of rich experi-ence at the faculty of humanities.
