April 2016 Edition
The Scuttlebutt premiered in January with an enjoyable and exciting first edition, and we’re
proud to be back now with a great second one! After figuring out printing, staff, and more, over
the last two months, we’re also happy to say that printed editions will be available in the future at
school for those interested. Thanks to the hard work of so many, we’ve started off very strong!
As much of our staff is filled with seniors, we are looking for underclassmen to come and get
involved in the paper. The Scuttlebutt is easy to write for and open to just about anything.
Students are free to contribute whatever they like, and of course we edit it, so the initial grammar
and spelling never needs to be perfect. From fashion, to movie reviews, to horoscopes, to school
news, to pictures, to writing, and more, the future editions of the Scuttlebutt will possess it all.
Students interested in joining can either ask us questions through our email,
[email protected], or join us Wednesdays after school in Mrs. Dick’s room for very
brief meetings. We’re always around to help people with their articles and ensure everyone is
having a great time on the paper! Come join us today and be a part of our growing group of
dedicated students! We’re looking forward to so many great future editions of the Scuttlebutt!

“Make sure to wear your jeans at least once a week.
Many college freshman are happy to only wear
sweats to be comfortable. But the opportunity cost of
this is they do not realize what is happening to their
waistline because of the dining hall. Sweats conceal
the truth, but jeans never lie. (I’ve ripped many a
pair)”

A College Freshman's Advice to Future College StudentsReposted from The Odyssey by Bri Hamlin
School News
Here it comes. Here comes the beginning of the rest of your life. Here comes your independence. Here comes your
freedom, your liberty, and your future. Here comes the start of a new adventure with all new surroundings and all new
people. Here comes the discovery of you and your capabilities. Here comes forever...
But there it goes. There goes the comfort of your mom's hug when your heart has been broken. There goes the Friday
night lights that will forever brighten the stadium you consider home. There go your best friends, and the convenience of
driving to their house at 2 a.m. to go to Waffle House. There goes your family, and waking up to see all of their faces every
morning. There go your dogs and being able to hear their excited barks every time you walk through the door. There go
your final days in those hallowed halls that will always define the person you became. There goes the uniform you've
played in for four years now. There goes the last pitch, shot, goal, or pass you will ever make on that field or court again.
There go your senior prom, your last exam, your graduation, your summer, and the goodbyes. There go your familiarity and
all of the people and places that fell alongside.
Because with every new journey you're about to embark on, there is going to be something you'll have to say goodbye
to for a little while. This time is exciting and beautiful, but take heart and leave nothing for granted. Because you will be
sitting in your dorm on that first night with either a complete stranger or with someone you know across from you and it will
all make sense.
It will make sense why they told you to extract every ounce of joy that you could your during senior year. It will make
sense why they told you to hug your mom a little tighter during those last few months. It will make sense why you were
supposed to keep in touch with those you never did. It will make sense why you received constant questions about where
you were going to college. It will make sense why you took countless collegereadiness surveys and questionnaires.
They were trying to prepare you for becoming a stranger to everything you used to know, and become comfortable with
everything you were about to be.
And then it will hit you again when you're home for Thanksgiving, and your family is talking about events,
conversations, memories, and everything else you've missed. You'll love your new life and all of the exciting friendships that
accompany it, but there will always be a little piece of home that you'll never fill. It will hit you again when you're studying for
exams and you will remember complaining about high school exams that you wish you could go back and take instead. It
will hit you when you're home for winter break and you've had to miss putting up the tree with your family because you were
at school. It will hit you when the seniors after you begin talking about graduation and how they can't wait to leave. It will hit
you when you begin to see all the promprosals and excitement of girls as they purchase their dresses. It will hit you when
you come home to visit, and you feel like a stranger in your own bed. It will hit you when you're overwhelmed with the
weight of your schoolwork and all you want to do is hold your mom's hand, hear encouraging words from your father, or
joke with your siblings. It will hit you, and you won't be able to change the past. You'll want to savor every moment you
spent your last days here, but it will be too late.
So make sure it's not too late. Practice the motto of "carpe diem" every single day you have left at home. Don't just
make the best out of your senior year. Make the best out of every day you have before you pack your bags and begin your
life.
There is so much going forward, and there is so much to look toward, but slow down and keep everything you have
right in front of you in focus. Because, before you know it, all of who you are will become who you were, and who you will
become will begin to make all the difference.
School Talent Show
The Delaware Military Academy hosted their
annual talent show on March 16th and it was a great
success! Students showcased their unique abilities in
the spirit of friendly competition. All the acts were
tremendous but a few came out on top. David Brady
had a spectacular dancing act in the essence of
Napoleon Dynamite to bring home the win to no
one’s surprise! Samantha Butler had a flawless dance
performance as well, taking second place. In third,
Lana Brown performed a mesmerizing singing act.
There were many other splendid singing acts as well
by Raeland La, Janice Scott, Alena Foley, Delia
Samson, Katie Certesio, and others. There was even
a wonderful cameo by our beloved historical
economics teacher Mr. Caskey on the guitar; as well
as a medley of songs performed by our resident band
instructor/guidance counselor Mr. Grant. Overall, it
was an entertaining night that displayed just how
talented the DMA student body truly is.
Congratulations to everyone who participated for your
remarkable performances!

DMA's First Model UNCompetition
By Evan Bennett
On the 30th of January, the Delaware Military
Academy had the pleasure of hosting its first ever Model
United Nations Conference. The DMA Model UN club
has existed and participated in various competitions
around the state for years, and this year the club, with
immense effort, choose to begin a new tradition at the
school.
With around 80 students in attendance, five
councils, and 16 issues of international importance up for
discussion, attendees from the Charter School of
Wilmington, DMA, Saint Mark’s, and Archmere Academy
took part in the competition. Students represented their
respective nation’s positions on specific issues and
worked together to find solutions to pressing
international issues, and all on a Saturday.
Issues of the day ranged from the growth of the Islamic
State in Syria, to antibiotic resistance, historical issues
like the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the independence of
states like Taiwan. Two sessions of debate took place
over five hours for the delegates, with a lunch break in
between, and an opening and closing ceremony for the
event. Mr. Caskey, DMA's economics teacher, was the
adviser for the event, and for Model UN.
In an effort to make the competition unique to DMA
and enjoyable, the conference was opened with the
national anthem, a color guard, and a keynote speech
from United States Senator Christopher Coons, which
was a huge pleasure for the students. Lunch was served
by the DMA favorite, the famous ChickFilA; and the
conference, considering all the hard work from the
students involved, was an incredible success.
The club certainly looks forward to putting on further
events in future years for the continued enjoyment of
many, and hopes to expand competition in scale and
quality each and every time.

Driver's Ed Corner
I would like to thank the DMA Scuttlebutt for the opportunity to add a Driver’s Education column to the newspaper.
In the coming months DMA’s Driver’s Education Department will contribute articles, information, statistics, and the
“Perfect Ten Club” recipient list.
First, I wanted to share my driver education webpage to all at the following link:
https://sites.google.com/site/mrlsdriverseducationdma/ On this web page you will find everything needed to educate
yourself on the DMA Driver’s Education program. I am so proud to bring my program here, and love working with 10th
graders.
A major source of my pride in this program is the Perfect Ten Club. Cadets strive to be perfect drivers in the car,and are scored on every drive from 110. After seven drives from the DMA parking lot to Banning Park, many
developments, the city streets of New Castle, Newark, and downtown Wilmington, from I95, I495 and down RT.1,
cadets learn the skills, rules of the road, and defensive tactics to become successful drivers. The perfect ten drivers are
posted on my show case board on the second floor of Talley Hall every marking period.
Here are the driver's education course requirements as listed on my homepage:
Driver’s Education This course consists of both class work and inthecar driving experience. Upon successfully completing this
course, the student will be able to obtain a Delaware Level 1 Learner's Permit. As of July 1, 2000, students must pass
at least five (5) subject areas during the quarter in order to receive a "Blue Slip.
It is important to remember that receiving a driver’s license is a PRIVILEGE and NOT a right! If the teacher has
reservations regarding the maturity of the student or possible safety issues regarding the student, a meeting will be
held with the student's parent, driver education teacher and building administrator to determine if a blue certificate will
be issued. It should also be noted that in the event that a student does not drive during the assigned semester, due to
age or any other issue, the student must contact the teacher upon return to the school within one month of return.
Driver’s Education is a state mandated course, with its own requirements and grading policy. Driver’s Education is
pass / fail with a 70% minimum required in all areas (classroom/ behind the wheel/final). House Bill 138 requires that
prior to receiving a blue certificate a student must be passing a minimum of 5 classes, two of which must be in major
subject areas. If the student has not met the requirement at the end of the subsequent marking period, the blue
certificate is null and void. The State of Delaware also maintains a strict attendance policy for Driver Education.
Students must not miss more than 3 classes in a marking period. If a student violates this policy by excessive
absences he/she has failed Driver Education and will not move on to the roadwork portion of the class.
Once a student has been assigned a driving schedule, it is up to him/her to honor that schedule. The student is
responsible for obtaining the required teacher signature. If the classroom teacher will not sign, the student is to notify
the driver education teacher as soon as possible. If the student does not show up for driving without a valid excuse,
the student may be replaced on the driving schedule until a later date.

Sports
Q: What's some good advice for incoming freshmen?A: From my experience, get involved in as many things as possible (within reason). Don't be afraid to participate in as
many clubs as sports as you can. Have fun while you are in high school: go to the “stupid dances,” watch school
sports teams play, utilize our school’s many service opportunities, maybe even attend an ice cream social (even if
only for the food), and just be an active participant. See the value in all the different activities that you will only to have
four years to enjoy like this!!! Take all opportunities that come your way and find something exciting in every thing you
decide to try. Now’s the time to join a sport you’ve never tried or a club you are at least halfinterested in; who knows,
you might find a new passion that can take you places. Academically, my best advice to study and do your homework.
So many freshman underestimate how much your first year GPA sets the tone for your entire academic career. You
could be “set for life,” so to speak, or be playing catch up for the rest of high school based on that freshman year GPA.
You don’t want to be that senior who looks back and wishes they did more academically (and socially). However, it’s
not as daunting as you may think to keep your grades in check. In a lot of classes just doing your homework will keep
your grades up, especially if you are not the best test taker, Reviewing notes is honestly the least practiced solution to
all your problems. Reviewing your notes at the end of class and when you get home each day will make it so much
easier to remember and understand the information you’re learning. Not to mention, when tests are approaching, you
won’t have to cramstudy nearly as much! As far as social involvement is concerned, volunteering with friends is so
underrated! Do things you’re actually interested in like helping out with kids or at animal shelters or whatever!
Speaking of friends, my advice is to go into high school and expect to meet every type of person you could ever
expect and be accepting to all of them. Not making snap judgements of people based on their immediate outward
appearance/behavior will give you more friends than you could imagine and make high school a lot more fun. This
advice applies to soon to be college freshman as well, where you will be exposed to even more opportunities and
people!

Hope
Hope is a blessing from above.
It is delivered through prayer, the words
and actions of humans, or even the
voice of an angel.
It may be quite obvious or just barely
seen.
Hope is a whisper…A wish…
A miracle…Hope may come as a weak voice in the
dark of the night,
Yet it is strong and bold, like a stream of
light.
It is a message that everything will be
alright.

The Revenant Apparently, all it takes for Leonardo DiCaprio to win an Oscar is being brutally mauled by a bear and losing
his entire family. As an avid Leonardo DiCaprio fan, I've been disappointed each time this Oscar has eluded
him. If the Academy has been waiting for an even more exceptional performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, they
have clearly found it in the Revenant.
The Revenant tells the harrowing story of Hugh Glass, a frontier explorer who is the victim of a bear attack.
If enduring a bear attack is not enough, Glass' own son is murdered in front of him, and Glass is abandoned in
the middle of the wilderness. After overcoming his injuries, Glass exacts revenge on the men that abandoned
him, and killed his son. The final scenes of the movie shows Glass finally getting his revenge.
Other actors from the film were very impressive. Notable was Tom Hardy and Will Poulter, who play John
Fitzgerald and Bridger respectively; the men who abandoned Hugh Glass. But most of all was new comer,
Forrest Goodluck, who portrayed DiCaprio's on screen son, Hawk. Hawk is the loyal son of Hugh Glass who's
mother was a Native American. Hawk is then murdered because he was trying to protect his father from
Fitzgerald. Goodluck provided a performance that really shows loyalty and unwavering love for his father.
Overall, the Revenant is an overwhelming story of one man coming back from the brink of death, and
becoming a force to be reckoned with. If you are one of the few people yet to see this movie go purchase the
DVD immediately!

Curiously, a planet from the cold outlying range of
our galaxy has been discovered to have had active
geologic life from the beginning of its past that
continues to its present. It has been discovered that the
internal heating of the planet may sustain an ammonia
rich subsurface ocean and other magnificent features
to combat larger, warmer planets such as Mars. It has
been discovered that many planets (namely moons like
Enceladus, Europa, and Ganymede) contain oceans
beneath their surfaces as well which has many
scientists interested in the prospects of their abilities to
sustain life. This was first observed by NASA’s New
Horizons spacecraft on July 14, 2015. However, new
research published Thursday has analyzed and
elaborated on these previous discoveries. “All we can
say is that we think that Pluto has an ocean and we
think that this ocean has survived to the present day.
It’s the kind of ocean that is deep inside the interior of
Pluto, in total darkness. It would lie between a floating
water ice shell and the rocky interior, so it would be in
contact with rock. There would be a modest amount of
heat leaking out. You certainly couldn’t rule it out, but
anything about life on Pluto is simply speculation,”
planetary scientist William McKinnon told Discovery
News recently. The physical and chemical
circumstances of Pluto have created unique conditions
for the planet, and future research will hopefully bring
positive prospects for NASA’s engagement with the
planet.

Sea World to End OrcaBreeding
The treatment and breeding of orcas in Sea
World has been a continual controversy for quite
some time now. With many animal advocacy
organizations protesting over the years, and the
documentary “Blackfish” exposing the unsatisfactory
care of orcas in Sea World, they have slowly earned
themselves a negative reputation in the eyes of the
public. Sea World CEO Joel Manby announced on
March 17 that Sea World will no longer be breeding
orcas. He also wrote that Sea World and the
Humane Society of the United States are beginning
a wonderful partnership: “Together, we will work
against commercial whaling and seal hunts, shark
finning and ocean pollution.” In addition to this, Sea
World is providing exhibits to feature the whales in
lieu of their performances, as well as increasing
their rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The future of
Sea World orcas seems to be increasingly positive
as time goes on which is good for both the whales
and the humans involved.

January 20–February 18With Venus making her grand entrance in Aquarius this week, get set for a month of feeling more onthan you’ve felt in awhile. The sun is already providing you with a welcome energyboost, but Venus will lend you magnetism, drawing people toyouand making you feel extra attractive. You’re likely to exudewarmth and give off a friendly, agreeable vibe. And you’ll be inthe mood to socialize — keeping the party going past yourbirthday season. The sun is leaving Aquarius, shifting someof your attention from who you are to what you have. It’s time to focus on finances, possessions, personal values, selfesteem and nonmaterial resources such as talents.Contemplate what you have going for you and how you can make the most of it.
