We received word last Saturday of the death of Sr. M. Paracleta Sweeney, OP, who served at St. John’s from 1979 to 2004 – including twenty years as principal of St. John School. Sr. Paracleta’s funeral was celebrated this past Wednesday at the motherhouse in Blauvelt; the school Mass to conclude Catholic Schools Week in February 2019 will be offered for her.
+ + + This Tuesday, we will welcome Nolan Beahen, whom Cardinal Dolan has assigned to St. John’s for a pastoral year. Nolan will live in the rectory with Fr. Giacona, Fr. Anthony and me, and will participate in the full spectrum of the spiritual, liturgical and apostolic life of the parish. Please offer him a warm welcome when you meet him!
+ + + Please note some of the many good things happening in September: The annual parish picnic is tomorrow (Monday) at Myron Urbanski Park on Craigville Road. It’s not too late to
RSVP. St. John School opens this Wednesday, September 5. On Friday, September 7, the school community will
gather for the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit at 9:00am in the church; everyone is most welcome. Religious education classes begin next week. There will be a short service in the church at the beginning of
each session (it will begin fifteen minutes after the session start time); we invite parents and siblings to join us, as we ask God’s blessing on the new school year.
The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a golf outing on Monday, September 10; please see the information elsewhere in the bulletin.
The Orange County Catholic Young Adults will gather on Thursday, September 13 at 7:00pm at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown for Mass and fellowship. (I have the privilege of celebrat-ing Mass for them this month.)
On Sunday, September 16, our catechists will come together at the 10:00am Mass as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The first youth group meeting of the new school year will be that evening at 6:00pm in the parish house.
Burke Catholic High School’s annual golf outing is on Friday, September 21; please visit www.burkecatholic.com for more information.
On the weekend of September 22/23, we will have a “Ministry Fair.” Representatives from most if not all par-ish ministries will be available after each Mass to answer questions and solicit those who may be interested in participating. Should the weather not cooperate, the fair will take place the following weekend, September 29/30.
The parish is partnering with Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster to host a Mass for Recovery on Monday, September 24 at 7:00pm in the church. We especially invite anyone who is suffering or recovering from addiction, their loved ones, and those who work to assist them.
I would like to have a Parish Clean-up Day on Saturday, September 29. There are quite a few projects around the property that, with many hands, we can easily knock off. Please stay tuned for details.

The publication of last week’s “testimony” from retired Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganó, formerly the apostolic nuncio (personal representative of the pope) to the United States, has turned what is already a spiritual and moral disaster into a conflagration. Conspiracy theories abound as to who knew what when, and what they did or didn’t do about it. At the same time, some members of the episcopacy have continued the unfortunate and patently un-helpful habit of issuing thoughtless and vapid statements that do nothing but add fuel to the fire. On this point, I’m with Archbishop Viganó: what is needed now is silence and prayer.
Continued on page 6.
Page 6 - 446 St. John
I fear that, especially in the last week, the firestorm surrounding the testimony, and the ensuing rush to point fin-gers and assign responsibility, has diverted attention from the only place it needs to be right now – on the victims of abuse at the hands of clergy, their families, friends, and others who have been on the front lines. It’s tragic enough that our parish has its own sordid history; a good number of our parishioners grew up in Pennsylvania or have family there, so the recent revelations have struck close to home. They should be the object of the Church’s attention, prayers and solicitude for as long as it is needed. The notion of offering “reparation” for the sins of others is rooted in the Incarnation and Passion of Our Lord. As noted in the venerable Catholic Encyclopedia, “We can . . . make some sort of reparation to the justice of God for our own offences against Him, and by virtue of the Communion of the Saints, the oneness and solidarity of the mystical Body of Christ, we can also make satisfaction and reparation for the sins of others.” In reparation for the sins and crimes committed by priests and bishops against others, I commit, during the month of September, to offer the rosary each day specifically for victims and their loved ones. I invite those who wish to join me in the chapel on Saturday, September 15 – the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows - at 11:00am for the public recitation of the rosary. That evening, we will have a holy hour at 7:30pm, also in the chapel, for the express pur-pose of praying for the victims. There will be a brief liturgy of the word, and we will pray the Litany of the Holy Eucharist; otherwise, it will be sixty minutes of silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. I’m well aware of the gamut of emotions – especially anger – at work right now. Thus, I simply ask that each pa-rishioner pray on and consider, if so moved, what reparation he/she might make. At the risk of being an alarmist, we are in the throes of genuine spiritual combat, which appears to have worn down many clerics. As Christ re-minds us very clearly, some demons can only be driven out by prayer (cf. Mark 9:29). St. John the Evangelist, pray for us. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us. St. Agnes, pray for us. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
