Can You Help Make the Vision for the Mater Bell Tower a Reality?

When the Mercy Sisters left the Mater Hospital in

2000, the Mater bell was removed and the intention was to install it at Corpus Christi

Church, given the significance of the bell to the people of Waratah.

It is currently proposed to construct a free-

standing bell tower adjacent to the church, to facilitate the installation of the Mater Bell. To move this important project forward, we are

asking for your help to raise $15,000. Brochures will be available at the churches next weekend,

detailing how donations can be made.

Special Music Event at St Mary’s Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th November

We are looking to replace the organ at St Mary’s Church and have two models on loan (on a trial basis) for the next month. The sound quality and the features of these instruments are truly amazing and will be show‐cased at St Mary’s on the weekend of 16th and 17th November. The program over the two days will include seminars, workshops and a concert. A highlight of the weekend will be the launch of Anne Millard’s recently published work, “Simply Singable Psalms”. The inspira on for these beau ful psalms has come from Anne’s extensive involvement in music liturgy and, in par cular, her ministry over recent years at the Sacred Heart Cathedral and within the Maitland‐Newcastle diocese.

Na onal Drought Prayer Campaign The Catholic Church in Australia is dedica ng the month of November as a me to pray for those affected by crippling drought condi ons and to pray for the gi of rain.

Parishes, schools, families and other Catholic communi es across the country are being encouraged to par cipate in the Na onal Prayer Campaign for Drought, which also invites people to provide assistance to those most in need.

The Bureau of Meteorology says that, on some measures, the current drought is the worst in 100 years or more, with most parts of Australia’s eastern states declared to be in drought.

Bishop Columba Macbeth‐Green OSPPE from Wilcannia‐Forbes oversees a diocese that covers about half of New South Wales, including some of the most drought‐affected areas in the country. He said the month of prayer is an addi onal response to the local work being done in affected communi es.

“Some of our Catholic ministries, along with other faith‐based, charitable and government organisa ons, are doing remarkable work, suppor ng people with material needs, offering financial support and responding to people’s psychological and spiritual needs,” Bishop Columba said. “In some dioceses, prac cal responses like school fee relief or support with rising u lity bills can ease an increasing burden for families, but in a Catholic context, prayer must be a part of our response.”

Bishop Columba said the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, has stories of rain being “God’s gi ” to people who are suffering, “In mes of drought like we are experiencing now, we should pray for God’s gi of rain, which will have the power to quench our arid lands and also li many people’s fallen spirits,” he said.

Bishop Columba said the na onal prayer campaign must be truly na onal, no ng that the whole country suffers when there is a drought – especially one of this magnitude. The Church needs to be an example of recognising that reality.

“That people living where there is plen ful, or at least enough, water don’t seem aware of how much suffering the drought is causing only adds to the hardship of those in drought‐affected communi es,” he said.

“The Church across Australia – lay people, religious, priests and bishops alike – needs to stand in solidarity with those suffering most acutely, offering prayers and prac cal support to those in most need.”
