T A G A I S T A T E C O L L E G ECelebrating 10 Years as Tagai State College

Students from across the Torres Strait from Boigu to Mer and NPA gathered on Thursday Island from Tuesday 23 – Thursday 25 February to display their rugby league and basketball skills at the District Trials.

Students from 10 of the 14 outer islands arrived a day before the rugby league trials and joined with Narupay in a skills clinic run by NRL Development Officer, Sean Durant and Robbie Moore from QRL Northern Division.

They were split into the Western and East-West teams and had the opportunity to train together with coaches Terry Abednego and Thomas Loban.

The next day, these two teams and NPA State College and Waybeni participated in the trials at Ken Brown Oval.

Waybeni regained the champion’s trophy that they lost last year to East-West. Waybeni was undefeated, although NPASC got within one try off them.

Not surprisingly, the Waybeni team dominated the individual awards and the District Team selections.

Sachen Assan was awarded the best forward trophy, Manu Nona the best back and Samaka Laifoo, one of the smallest

The East-West were the runners-up and Western the Best and Fairest Team.

The Basketball Trials included 35 students from Waybeni Buway, Waybeni Koey, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Narupay, Mabuygiw and Badhulgaw.

They participated in a skills clinic and small games. There were 6 boys and 6 girls were chosen in the teams after the Trials.

Two spaces have been left open in case students from NPASC are selected when the selector visits there this week.

A great team effort not only by all the students, but the adults as well.
