EDITORIAL TAX PROBLEM MUST BE FACED AND SOLVED:

-While waiting for the Armed Forces Day parade to start_ I had th pleasure of shaking hands with old friends; Sen. Briefly we spoke of high taxes and I let them know that Alpine is up in arms over the new assessments, and that something must

be done about it. Thursday the San Diego Union ran a story quoting Gibson on this. Much is worth repeating. He said that our county can expect a major influx of indigents because of elimination of welfare residency requirements. Gibson is a member of the Welfare Committee of the County Supervisors Association of California, said that taxpayers are being asked to remit beyond their means to finance welfare. He said the state costs for this have jumped 420o/o in the past 8 years, from $466 million in 1959-60 to $1. 9 billion for 1967-68. In this county he added, costs rose in the same period · 50 9o/o or from $ 7 to $ 3 92 million ! He blames the rise--, more to come this year, around $ 50 million-- on recent decisions by federal courts term -inatin residency requirements. Gibson said the trend of welfare here is "creating dependency, discouraging initiative and rewarding the lazy and the immoral at a crippfin cost to the few •• forced to pay the bill". The aged, the needy, the hunry, the blind, the underprivileged child, who need welfare should get it, Gibson added, and we will agree with that, but the vast number wno get it in an unmoral manner, should·oe shunted off our backs I Gibson concluded that the Board of Supervisors lacks authority under present state laws to make corrections in the local system. "Our only authority and responsibil- . ity is to find the money, " he said. "The day must come when the boards of supervisors will be given back the authority of home rule and control. " There are a lot of good Americans that do not want their ambition and initiative killed, and I'm one I -Cl TREASURES IN WORDS In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. We are going to miss Cynthia more than we know and already feel it. We are riding in the Rancho Bernardo Parade tomorrow as Frew Williams is taking our horses up for us. We needed their legs trimmed but Cynthia took the clippers, which were hers, so will have to do the best we can ourselves. W e are thrilled about going and will sing later on in the day. This is a big day over there and a lot of fun is plan.ned for all attending.

Alpine Riding Club postponed the gymkhana show planned for tomorrow until the 15th because of so many other activities going on. School will be out and Doris Sculfy and Reenie Adams think it will be better for all . She said " be at the ring at 9 am sharp and the show will start on time. " She has some nice trophies and ribbons so hope we can attend.

Gary Menconi was surprised Wednesday when his new horse Trinket presented him with a little horse colt. He named him Viejas Kid. He can't ride the mare for some time, so his parents went out and bought a nice mare for

him to ride. He looked all over and picked her out of them all. Trinket was jealous and when the opportunity came she grabbed Candy by the tail and wouldn't let go, even though she was in the other pasture and the hit wire was on. She hung on and frightened the new mare so much she kicked the fence down. Gary and his dad had to put her up on their property by the Willows and separated them which is better in the long run. Horses are a lot of fun but can cause a lot of trouble for all concerned.

Matey Hem has her nice gelding for sale for only $ 7 5. He would be a perfect horse for a beginner or a young child as he is gentle. She wants Beau to go to a gooa home as she has had him for a long time. Call 445- 2882 if you are interested .

Mike Scully had an uneasy time last week when Thunder got sick with some kind of an allergy. He rolled on the ground and his eyes got puffy and his Tips got hard. They called a vet and he said he had eaten something he couldn't tolerate and that was the kind of reaction he got, Sounds like poison oak to us but our horses have eaten it without any problems, so really don't know . He finally got all right and went on eating.

Cynthia wrote us that she has a 40- acre irrigated pasture for her horse Smokey and for only $6 . a month, Sounds fantastic to us. Cathy Higgins dad is going to take him up for lier this weekend and we !mow she can hardly wait. The pasture is right across the street from their house too.

Jack Berg sold his little sorrel pony but still has his beautiful Arabian to go complete with saddle. Call him at 445-4265 if you are interested.

Here's Gary Menconi with his Appaloosa mare Trinket that presented him with a little stallion at 10:30 pm Wednesday last week. Nikki and Bob helped Gary withstand the excitement, a thrill for all ! They needed iodine for the umbilical cord, but stores were closed so Jerry Funk obligingly opened up so the lad could take care of that matter. Thay named the baby Viejas Kid.

14 Oo11•t1 1 Al.« By Cecile and Celeste Irvine Guess about the hardest thing we have had to do in a long time was to put Cynthia and baby Julie on the plane for Oregon. She was going to LA with us but because of the holiday couldn't get a plane out of San Francisco so Ieft Wednesday on a United jet from here. It only took 4½ hours with nearly an hour stopover in Frisco. She called Daddy when she arrived and is thrilled so far with Oregon. She says the berries are so thick you can't begin to pick them all and a nice wide stream runs right in back of their house. Sure sounds exciting and as soon as they get settled, we are flying up to see them. We went to LA after she left and saw all our friends , cousins and relatives and it was kind of funny not to find her here when we got back. We really are going to miss them all. She and Bill called again Saturday night and we talked some more about the lush grass but it had been raining all day tliere and we had beautiful bright sunshine so maybe they will 0be back. Who knows?

On our return from LA we stopped off in San Marcos to be in the bi8 parade ther.e and arrived just in time to get dressed and climb aboard Fred Williams' stage coach. Cathy Higgins . and Marty Hoy were already there but · we .were not late. The parade was huge and Williams' outfit won a trophy for being most original. We stayed for the rodeo but were so tired we came on home after it was over. We saw in the SD Union where Ann DeBenedetti is running for Miss Chiropractor, the girl with the most perfect posture. She used to live here and we all wish her luck, Richard and Diann Irey were thrilled when they received a baby girl Wednesday night. They named Fier Beckey Ann but because she weighed only 5# they had to leave her in an incubator for a couple of days, but she is home now and doing fine. We haven't had time to see her but will this week. Richard and his family lived just down the street from us until his father diea and they moved to Chula Vista. JoAnn Villa was thrilled with the sale of her lamb at the EC Fair. She sold him to Floyd Realty in Lakeside for 66¢ a pound and received a second place ribbon. This is her first try and we are real happy for her. Kevan Blankenship received Grand Champion and Unimart bought his for $4. a pound, Neta Miller got a first and Donna Schwenck got a first and a second for lambs. Anyone looking for kittens? !REYS WELCOME BABY DAUGHTER Richard Irey, formerly of Tavern Road returned from service in Vietnam last year, with his pretty wife Diane, of Salt Lake City, now living in EC, were blessed with a dainty little miss Wednesday of last week. She arrived at 7:25 p. m. in EC Valley Hosptal, weighed 5#, 14 oz, measured 19 long, was promptly named Rebecca Ann. She had to be in the incubator for a time, then came home Sunday and all's well and happy for the young couple. You never fully appreciate the flag until you are in a foreign land and see it waving serenly over an American embassy, home, business or a U. S. vessel ! LIVE OAKS DOINGS Mrs. Emma Holmes, president, reports a tidy sum of $49. made from their card party last Monday. Mmes.
