    Executive Overview

IBM System Networking has a large portfolio of embedded switches for IBM BladeCenter and IBM FlexSystems, in addition to a number of Data Center (Top-of-Rack) RackSwitch

products. The following document provides details on some of the optionsavailable for these switches, including Part Numbers (PN) for the System xchannels and Feature Codes (FC) for Power/Storage.

Rack KitsAll RackSwitch products ship with 2-post rack kits, which are included in anaccessory box, inside of the switch box. (No additional purchase is required)

For iDataPlex rack clients should order PN 90Y3535 for the RackSwitch front-to-rear models.

An optional IBM 19 Flexible 4 Post Rail Kit can be purchased separately (PartNumber 49Y4284, Feature Code EU06) and can be adjusted to fit a variety ofracks 27/32 apart.

Ethernet I/O Connectivi ty (Transceivers & DirectAttached Cables)

Over the past decade, there is a mix of connections being used like SFP, SFP+, XFP, CX4 and QSFP+technologies. This section is intended to help recommend cables and transceivers for IBM SystemNetworking switches and include part numbers for the recommended cables.

    1Gb Ethernet

The majority of 1Gb clients will use RJ-45, but in some instances clients might need to go longer distances.SX transceivers support distances up to 220 meters using 62.5/125 multi-mode fiber and up to 550 meterswith 50/100 multi-mode fiber. LX transceivers support distances up to 10 kilometers using 8.3/9/10 m Single-mode, Long Haul Fiber (1300nm) single mode fiber.

    10GBase-T Ethernet

The use of 10GBase-T is likely to be used by clients who value cost over latency and power. 10Gbase-Tallows clients to use low cost copper CAT6/6A cables with RJ45 connections.

    Page 4

    10Gb SFP+ Ethernet

Ideal for clients wanting low latency and low power consumption. Most clients will use Direct AttachedCopper (DAC) SFP+ cables for distances up to 7 meters. For longer distances the SR transceiver cansupport distances up to 300 meters, while the LR transceivers support up to 10 kilometers and the ERtransceivers support up to 40 kilometers. IBM also offers optical cables which are required for using each of

    the transceivers.

    40Gb Ethernet

While this is a new technology, there is a lot of flexibility for clients.

To increase the number of available 10G ports, clients can use IBM QSFP+ DAC Break Out Cables to splitout each 40Gb port and connect up to four 10Gb SFP+ external ports.

For 40G to 40G connectivity, clients can use IBM QSFP+ to QSFP+ cables up to 7 meters or combine 40Gtransceivers and optical cables for longer distances.

    Switches for IBM BladeCenter

IBM BladeCenter Virtual Fabric 10G Switch Module(46C7191)This switch has 10 external 10G Ethernet ports that can support of mix of 1G/10G

transceivers and/or DAC cables.Note: If you have an XFP port on your storage device or networking switch, you willneed to use an approved 10GBase-SR XFP transceiver on that device. Then youwill use the10Gbase-SR SFP+ transceiver on the Virtual Fabric 10G Switchmodule. You can then connect the two devices with an LC-to-LC multimode fiberpatch cable.

IBM iFlow Director (46C9250)The iFlow Director is a high-throughput, low-latency, traffic load distribution systemin a 10 Gbps Ethernet switch for BladeCenter H and HT.This switch has 10 external 10G Ethernet ports that can support of mix of 1G/10Gtransceivers and/or DAC cables.Note: If you have an XFP port on your storage device or networking switch, you will

need to use an approved 10GBase-SR XFP transceiver on that device. Then youwill use the10Gbase-SR SFP+ transceiver on the Virtual Fabric 10G Switchmodule. You can then connect the two devices with an LC-to-LC multimode fiberpatch cable.

IBM BladeCenter 1/10G Uplink Ethernet Switch Module(44W4404)This switch has six external 1GB RJ-45 ports and three 10Gb SFP+ uplink portsthat 10G transceivers and/ or 10G DAC cables.

IBM BladeCenter Layer 2/3 Copper Ethernet Switch Module(System x = 32R1860, Power = 3212)Supports up to SIX 1Gb RJ-45 ports which simply require Cat5e cables seeCablessection.

IBM BladeCenter Layer 2-7 (32R1859) EthernetSwitch ModuleSupports up to FOUR 1Gb RJ-45 ports which simply require Cat5e cables seeCables section.

IBM BladeCenter Layer 2/3 Fiber (32R1861) EthernetSwitch ModuleSupports up to SIX 1Gb Fiber ports and comes standard with six IBM SFP SXtransceivers.

Can also support optional, IBM SFP LX Transceivers (PN 90Y9424).

Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements andprojections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actualthroughput that any user will experience will depend on considerations such as theamount of multiprogramming in the users job stream, the I/O configuration, thestorage configuration and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can begiven that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the

    performance ratios stated here.
