The combined sentence shouldnot include a BUT (e.g.: Althoughthe police tortured him, but he

did not confess). The contrast should make sense

( it does not make sense to say :

• In spite of the fact that we played withten men, we won the game easily.

Despite means the same as ‘in spite of’. You do not use ‘of’ after despite.
