Rutgers University –Newark Lead Institution Garden State-Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation

The Northern New Jersey – Bridge to Bachelor Program offers research training to participating students to help prepare them to compete successfully for entry into graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. in the STEM fields. Providing Academic Research Training to Undergraduates which is funded by NSF, the goals of the NNJ-B2B program is to increase the numbers and capabilities of minority STEM majors to continue to a four year college and to prepare students for careers in STEM research.

Purpose of Internship The major focus of internship for NNJ-B2B students is on learning professional skills, abilities, and STEM activities practiced in a research lab setting where the focus is on helping community college students develop lab bench skills . Students will be involved in as many aspects of the STEM research process as their academic training and variations in each of the 4year colleges associated with the Garden State- Louis Stokes for Alliance Minority Participation (GS-LSAMP).

Prerequisites & Eligibility Requirements for Stipend support: Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and have completed all coursework prior to internship. Students should consult with their academic adviser to ensure that all prerequisites are successfully completed prior to beginning the internship. Students must also have obtained a grade of C or higher in the following courses:

• General Biology I and II with labs • General Chemistry I and II with lab • One year of Mathematics (Calculus I & II)

internship through NNJ-B2B grant after graduation. • If you graduate from yr NNJ-B2B community college site and want to do a paid internship

at one of the GS-LSAMP sites, you must first apply and be accepted to that alliance member site to be eligible.

• Approval from your NNJ-B2B site Coordinator. • All stipend, travel and lab fees will be through your individual NNJ-B2B site coordinators. • Each NNJ-B2B research intern will sign a contract letter and submit a student and faculty

evaluation as well as a weekly attendance record to be signed by their research supervisor. STEPS to follow for a successful STEM Research Internship: Step 1: Meet with your NNJ-B2B site coordinator and review prerequisites and GPA

requirements.

Step 2: Create a resume

Step 3: Finding a STEM Research Internship. Please work with your NNJ-B2B site coordinator

in selecting one to three possible research internships from the GS-LSAMP Research Internship

objectives.

Step 4: NNJ-B2B Intern Orientation “Transitioning from Community College to a 4 Year

College? How to use your science, technology, engineering, or math degree” Attend the 4 year

college Intern Orientation so you will be better acquainted with travel arrangements and college

site.
