Dear Symphony and Opera Patrons,

It is my pleasure to invite you to be a part of the 94th season of The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and the 65th season of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company. We have planned a variety of musical events for you this season, ranging from outstanding internationally known flutist Ransom Wilson to the Beach Boys at the Beau Rivage. There will be major symphonies by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, as well as Mozart’s Così fan tutte and a musical theatre showcase, Showbiz Showstoppers. There is truly something for everyone.

I look forward to my 26th year at Southern Miss, and I want to thank all of you for your continued support over those many years. It has been a pleasure to be a part of this institution’s history and to work with the many outstanding musicians who have been members of both the orchestra and opera, as well as the excellent faculty who have been a vital part of their training while at Southern Miss.

It has also been a pleasure to work with the long-time supporters in our community, state and region. The many outstanding events that we have experienced together over those years have been both extraordinary and memorable. Our opening night features a performer who has been recognized internationally as one of the greatest flutists of his

generation. Ransom Wilson has appeared as a soloist, conductor and in concert with some of the greatest orchestras and artists of

our time, including the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, London Symphony, Frederica von Stade,

Jessye Norman, Thomas Hampson, Susan Graham, Dolora Zajick, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Hilary Hahn, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Sir James Galway,

Barry Douglas, Peter Frankl, Robin Sutherland and many others.

In addition to his current work at the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, Wilson has conducted numerous productions with the opera

companies of Glimmerglass, Minnesota, Portland, as well as the Festival La Quincena in Spain and the International Opera Center in Amsterdam.

The works of Mozart and Beethoven are featured in our opening concert. The D major Flute Concerto is Mozart at his most playful and musical. The Mozart concerto is followed by Beethoven’s mighty and tuneful Seventh Symphony; the dotted rhythms in this work will have

you dancing in the aisles! This is an evening that proves elegance is truly timeless.

The Beach Boys helped define American musical pop culture. For five decades, The Beach Boys have recorded and

performed some of the world’s favorite music. In 1962, they released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, which launched them into international stardom.They continue to hold

Billboard/Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also

the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy’s

Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, The Beach Boys are a beloved American institution

that remains iconic around the world.

Rachmaninoff - Symphony No. 2Walton - Concerto for Viola and Orchestra

Rachmaninoff ’s Symphony No. 2 is among the composer’s most popular works. A Russian émigré given to melancholy,

Rachmaninoff fled revolutionary Russia to end his days in California. This work was written in 1906 when the composer was

on leave in Dresden from his duties as director of the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg. The elegiac third movement, a long and luscious adagio, is among the most popular pieces Rachmaninoff

ever wrote. This will be followed by Sir William Walton’s Concerto for Viola, a touchstone composition for the repertoire of that

instrument. Written in 1929 it was considered too modern for English tastes but was championed by Paul Hindemith and has

since become a staple of 20th century music.

“That’s Just the Way Women Are!” Such is the name of one of Mozart’s most famous operas.

Written at the height of his powers, and only a year before his death, Così fan tutte is one of the

greatest comedies in the operatic repertoire. Two seemingly happy and loving couples decide to test

the fidelity of each other with disastrous—and hilarious—results.

A prudish Beethoven considered the piece too naughty to be performed, but in more recent years

it has become one of Mozart’s most performed operas. Mozart never wrote more beautiful

melodies than he did in this score. Don’t miss this one!

Beethoven’s Fifth is the most famous symphony in the world. “Fate knocking on the door,” Beethoven labored on this work for

four years from 1804-1808, and it remains as fascinating, revolutionary and innovative in the 21st century as it did in its own day. This is coupled

with another masterpiece written over a hundred years later: Prokofiev’s commanding Piano Concerto No. 2. Prokofiev’s manuscript was destroyed in the Russian Revolution, but so passionate was the composer’s love for the piece that

he lovingly recreated and restored it from memory. It is among the most difficult and demanding concertos in the piano’s repertory.

Laureate of the 2003 Honens International Piano Competition and winner of France’s 2002 Concours International de Piano 20e siècle d’Orléans, Canadian pianist Winston Choi is an

inquisitive performer whose fresh approach to standard repertory and masterful understanding, performance and commitment to works by living composers make him one of today’s most dynamic

young concert artists.

Apo Hsu is the orchestra director at the National Taiwan Normal University. Guest appearances have taken Ms. Hsu all over the United States, Taiwan, Russia, Asia, South America and Australia. In a performance with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., she captivated students in an

interactive youth education series. Other guest appearances have included several performances for youth with the Saint Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony and many more.

The evening opens with one of our most popular events – Future Stars. Students in the Southern Miss School of Music annually

compete in the William T. Gower Competition. The winners appear as soloists with the orchestra in one of our most popular evenings of

music. This year, winners will be selected from the wind, brass and percussion divisions.

Conductor Gregory Fuller and the Hattiesburg Choral Union takes the stage on the second half to sing the U.S. premiere of Kreek’s

Notebook, a work for choir and strings based on Estonian spiritual folk tunes. It presents a new, modern look at folk hymns and is an homage

to Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek.

A magical evening of outstanding student soloists, gifted singers, wonderful music and the incomparable Symphony Orchestra

makes a spectacular finale to the entire season.
