An Illustrated Shortlist

Page 2: Symbiotic Sciences - slam-livre.fr · medicine, sociology, philosophy, geometry and measurement, classification systems, and plant discoveries. And with Enlightenment came a flourishing

Man is, by nature, a political animal.

The maritime expansion of the seventeenth century led to a spectacular increase of international transfer and exchange of ideas and commodities in the eighteenth century. The relationship between trade and scientific discovery was the essence of the age, whether in agriculture, astronomy, chemistry, medicine, sociology, philosophy, geometry and measurement, classification systems, and plant discoveries. And with Enlightenment came a flourishing book trade which bore revolutionary ideas which led us to our modern commercial society. Here are a few rare items from that age.

He made his own observations of the 6 June 1761 Transit of Venus, at Trefeca, creating a meridian line there (which was unfortunately more recently destroyed during renovations). The Royal Society copy of his observations was mislaid, and so the first publication of Joseph's "Account of the Transit of Venus over the Sun 6th June 1761" was in January 2010 in ‘Brycheiniog’. In 1762 Joseph joined, and was Membership Secretary of, the newly founded Boodle's Club. Other contemporary members included Adam Smith and David Hume. ESTC: T113353
