Symbaloo  Tutorial  (Spring  2014)    Why  use  this  tool?  

• Organize  your  online  favorite  sites  and  connections  • Save  bookmarks  by  content  or  interest  area  • Create  your  own  “webmix”  pages  

 How  to  make  the  most  of  this  interesting  tool  for  education:    Create  tabs  for  each  subject  area  or  a  unit  of  study     Search  for  favorite  sites  to  see  what  others  have  found     Create  one  and  share  it  with  classmates,  your  classroom  students,  parents,  and/or  peers    Directions:    

Start  by  browsing  some  of  the  already  existing  webmixes  by  clicking  the  dropdown  arrow  to  select  the  Gallery.      

 When  the  Gallery  opens  with  the  search  box,    type  in  a  topic  of  interest  (this  example  uses  ‘history’  to  search)    

 Scroll  down  the  listing  and  notice  the  ratings  and  the  number  of  people  that  selected  one  as  a  top  webmix.  View  the  webmix  of  one  or  two,  then  do  a  new  search  by  clicking  on  the  “Back  to  results”    menu.

 Do  another  search  on  a  different  topic  (our  search  is  “rap”)  And  it  turned  up  a  wide  variety  of  different  pages,  and  one  is  a  great  example  for  a  classroom,  by  a  3rd  grade  teacher  (Miss  Reicks  3rd  Grade  Mix)    

 You  may  have  already  noticed  the  different  country  flags  by  the  names  of  some  of  these  remixes,  and  that  they  are  in  foreign  languages.  This  program  is  being  used  around  the  world.    Our  third  search  (“sports”)  brings  up  Dangerous  Sports,  Sports  Blogs,  Sports  news,  Top  College  Sports  teams  and  over  4000  others.      Now  that  you  have  done  some  research  on  the  possibilities,  click  on  the  symbaloo  symbol  on  the  top  of  the  page  and  begin  by  creating  your  own  free  account.    

 

Start  by  creating  a  free  account  (password  and  email  are  required)

Select  a  Name*  you  want  to  be  known  as  in  Symbaloo  (we  advise  against  your  full  name).  

   Visit  your  email  account  used  to  set  this  up    

 

Verify  your  email  address  by  clicking  the  link  in  your  email.  When  you  click  the  link    in  your  email  it  will  take  you  directly  into  your  new  account  on  symbaloo.  

 You  will  be  on  a  “feeds”  page,  and  notice  the  mail  messages  waiting  on  the  top  right.  It  will  prompt  you  to  create  a  profile,  and  to  set  this  as  your  homepage  (optional).  

 The  drop-­‐down  arrow  next  to  the  person  shows  a  menu  of  choices.  Start  with  My  Profile.  REMEMBER  TO  Sign  Out  when  done.

My  Profile:    Creating  a  profile.  You  can  create  a  basic  profile  and  edit  it  later  on  as  you  choose.

 Preferences  

 Account  Settings    An  important  part  here  is  at  the  bottom.  You  can  turn  notifications  on  or  off.  Do  you  want  notifications  if  your  page  is  public  and  someone  leaves  a  comment  or  follows  you?    

This  is  where  you  can  change  the  name  for  your  account  and  email  address,  your  password,  and  the  language  and  region  (country)  you  are  in.

Symbaloo    -­‐  Your  page  to  begin  editing!  1.  You  can  delete  the  tabs  that  already  exist,  or  modify  them.    2.  You  can  add  your  own  new  tabs.  

To  Delete  a  webmix,  click  the  tab  for  the  page  and  click  on  the  word  Remove  by  the  trash  can  at  the  top,  or  on  the  small  x  on  the  tab  when  you  click  on  it.  It  will  ask  you  to  confirm  before  deleting  the  tab  with  the  mix  on  it.    

 Create  your  own  Webmix  page    Click  the  +  symbol    

 

 Name  the  Webmix  tab  (or  you  can  also  search  for  a  set  already  created  by  others).  Let’s  create  your  own.  

 

 Once  you  click  on  Add  you  will  have  a  blank  slate  with  a  Google  search  button  in  the  middle.  This  can  changed  in  your  Preferences  settings.  

 Click  in  any  blank  tile  space.  When  you  mouse  over  it  will  have  a  +  and  “add  new  tile”  Click  on  it.  

 Click  on  Create  a  tile  in  the  Edit  tile  box  that  appears

• Type  in  the  URL  to  a  favorite  site.  

• Type  in  a  name  for  your  tile  and  click  the  box  to  show  the  text.  

• Select  a  background  color  for  your  tile,  or  you  can  upload  your  own  image.  

• Click  o  Save  when  ready.  

 Now  you  have  your  first  tile.  You  can  drag  it  to  any  location  on  your  board,  and  add  more  of  your  favorites  to  your  page.  You  can  also  choose  an  icon  or  image  from  their  graphics,  badges,  stickers,  etc.  The  camera  image  is  from  their  sticker  collection.  

 Add  to  your  chart  as  you  find  new  and  great  resources,  and  add  new  tabbed  pages  for  different  area  of  interest.      

Note:  If  you  want  to  follow  a  page  with  a  “feed”  such  as  news  site,  radio  station,  or  embed  a  video  you  can  select  that  when  you  add  a  new  tile.
