Atom Lakers getting behind team captain in leukemia battle

A Sylvan Lake hockey team is rallying around its captain in his bid to beat leuke-mia.

Michael Arthur, the 10-year-old captain of the Atom AA Sylvan Lake Lakers hockey team, was diagnosed with the cancer earlier this month.

He recently began his first round of che-motherapy, and is likely to stay in the Calgary Children’s Hospital for at least six months. His parents and older brother Steven will be by his side the entire time.

Members of Arthur’s hockey team are now doing everything they can to support him on his road to recovery.

Donations are being collected to help cover the many treatment-related expenses

that will be incurred over the next several months.

A fundraiser is being planned, for which silent auction items are being sought.

NexSource Centre community fundraising still going strongTREENA MIELKE

The multi-million dollar NexSource Centre soon to be built in Sylvan Lake is getting closer to becoming a reality, thanks in no small part to fundraisers who with relentless enthusiasm continue to keep up the quest for needed dol-lars.

Deb Garritty, co-chair of the facility’s fundraising com-mittee, said $1.375 million has so far been raised, close to the $2 million fundraising goal that will help offset costs of the $30-million project.

“It’s going good, people are really coming forward all the time to help out,” she said.

The latest ‘Buy a Seat’ fundraiser allows individuals to buy a seat for family, friends or an organization, and have their name engraved on it. Bleachers in the current arena will be upgraded as part of the redevelopment project, and by buying a seat, members of the public can contribute to the project while recognizing a particular individual or group.

Recent fundraising efforts are evidence the community knows how to turn tragedy into triumph — only a year ago, the old arena roof collapsed under the weight of heavy snow.

While the news was devastating, it seemed, as tragedy often does, to be the catalyst that united the community in an even closer bond than before.

Even before the rotting timbers of the old arena had time to settle, fundraisers were hard at work raising the much-needed dollars for a new facility.

In early 2013, the multiplex redevelopment fundraising

committee, consisting of co-chairs Amy Komarninski and Deb Garritty, Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre and coun-cillor Megan Chernoff, Amy Dakin, Don McKenzie, Louise Traverse, Lorie Johanson and Joyce Thrush, was formed.

A task force consisting of Chloe Lester, Christine Moore, Daryl Pickering, Gregg Broks, John Salsbury, Kari-Anne Weller and Keith Stephenson was also put together.

In April 2014, NexSource announced a $500,000 dona-tion, which gave the company naming rights to the new facility.

Other sizable donations also began to come in. The curling club, which is presently without a home

rink, presented a $100,000 cheque toward the rebuilding of the curling rink, along with a $125,000 government grant.

Dollars came from Harvest Energy ($45,000), ATB Financial ($15,000) and Canadian Home Builders ($4,000).

Makayla Beck and Myia Hellmer raised $685, Chief ’s Pub and Eatery donated $400, and Booster Juice donated $4,016 collected through Wednesday sales. For several months last year, Pet Planet donated a portion of sales to the cause. Sylvan Lake Bottle Depot donated $1,456,75. Donations totalling $2,784 were given to the NexSource Centre by people who were photographed with the Stanley Cup during its visit to town last year.

The design of the proposed facility is such that it will meet the needs of the diverse age groups and lifestyles of

those living in Sylvan Lake now and in the future.The NexSource Centre will feature hockey rinks, a curl-

ing rink with five sheets of ice, an upstairs lounge, youth activity areas, space for seniors programs, multi-purpose rooms and a four-lane running/walking track.

Completion has been tentatively slated for the fall of 2016.

On Saturday, my husband and I took our oldest grandson, who has just turned 11, to a Rebels hockey game.

“Happy birthday, grandson,” I said, proudly, hoping my smile would reach across the table at the pizza place where we were having his birthday supper, and connect with his serious, grey green eyes and make them smile, too.

The tickets were, of course, our gift to him.

However, if the honest to good-ness truth were known, for me, at least, the tickets were a gift for us, too.

Imagine being lucky enough to sit with your grandson, a boy just turned 11, watching the game, cheering when the home team scored, yelling, stamping your feet, eating junk food and just being one with the noisy, enthusiastic fans spilling out of the bleachers.

“Fun!”“You can have whatever you

want to eat,” I said, my generosity, because of the gift I had given to me, knowing no bounds. “We had found our seats and hit the conces-sion almost simultaneously.

“What do you want me to have, grandma?” he said politely.

“I want you to eat lots of junk food and go back for more,” I said seriously.

“I want you to eat lots and cheer really loudly and just have so much fun. I want you to be inspired by the players, not because they won, but because they tried so hard and, even from the stands where we were, you could see the sweat that

beaded their brow and watch how, during the last minute of play in the tie game, their eyes were riveted to the score clock.

“I want you to be just happy and excited for no other reason than you are here at a hockey game in a nice, warm arena sitting with two people who love you very much.

“And, some day, when you are all grown up and sitting in the stands with your buddies watching a hock-ey game somewhere, I hope that you will have a sudden flashback about one night just after you turned 11 when you were sitting with your grandparents in a nice, warm arena and you were happy.

“And I hope you will remember the crowd and the excitement and the cheering and how the game finally ended in a shoot-out, and your grandma cried when the other team scored.”

I’m kidding! I did not cry, but it

was sad, though. The goalie looked like he was about ready to cry, too.

Anyway, the game ended and I folded up the blanket that we didn’t need and my grandson put all the garbage we had accumulated in the garbage receptacle.

I watched him, thinking our planet will be in good hands if his behaviour is at all indicative of the next generation.

“It was good hockey,” my hus-band said to his grandson. “But not as good as yours,” he added gently.

And we agreed pond hockey, when your grandson is on one of the teams, is probably the best hockey there is!

But sitting next to him at a Rebels game is pretty good, too.

In fact, it’s probably the next best thing!

• Reporting to the Director of Community Services, this position is responsible for providing overall administration and direction to the Recreation and Culture Department including the planning and operational functions for the NexSource Centre, Aquatic Centre, Special Events and Culture portfolios

• Responsible for the planning, management and effi cient implementation of short-term and yearly operating plans including development of yearly, 3 year operating budgets and all capital projects for the Department, including the creation of work plans and follow up reporting.

• Promotes, plans, partners and acts as a liaison with community organizations to deliver a broad range of recreation and cultural development opportunities to the citizens of Sylvan Lake.

• Promote, support and enforce the Town Health and & Safety Policy and Procedures, and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements.

POSITION TITLE:Asset Management Coordinator


• Reporting to the Director of Public Works, this position provides the lead role in the development, implementation and administration of a life cycle asset management plan including a long term capital forecast for all major expenditures for the Town’s assets, including but not limited to roads, sidewalks, water mains, sewers, buildings, facilities, etc.

• Develops and implements asset management policy and procedures and establishes risk management practices in life cycle cost analysis and performance engineering to prioritize expenditures in collaboration with Director of Public Works.

• Collect data in the fi eld and as required to fully inventory and determine the condition of all Town assets using, a networked personal computer, Asset Management Software, and CADD software.

• Enter initial and updated information into the Asset Management software as it becomes available, including working with all contractors, staff, developers, and others to ensure timely and accurate input of data into the Town Asset Management system.

• Develop and maintain asset policies and valuation methodologies in the operation, maintenance and upgrade of municipal infrastructure.

• Issue and track preventative maintenance tasks from Asset Management software

• Liaise with other departments regarding the implementation and usage of the Asset Management software.


• Minimum 3 years’ experience in Municipal and/or Civil related fi eld • Minimum 2 year diploma in Engineering Technology or an

equivalent fi eld • A professional designation within a recognized accreditation such as

ASET or APEGA, or eligibility to acquire membership. • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may

be considered. • Knowledge and experience in Asset Management, including

POSITION TITLE:Records and Information Clerk


• Reporting to the Director of Finance, this position is responsible for maintaining and continuing to develop

and implement comprehensive plans for the record keeping management program of the Town.

• Development and maintenance of a comprehensive records

management program which meets both legal requirements, operational and administrative needs of the Town.

• Performs audits of all operational records in all locations to ensure compliance with current records management policy and practice.

• Evaluate needs of departments and integrate fi ling systems within statutory requirements

• Assume custody and control of all designated records storage areas and ensure that records storage space is allocated and maintained appropriately and that records management issues are addressed proactively.

• Initiates and manages the implementation of new programs and/or records management systems (eg. Laserfi che).

• Responsible to coordinate the destruction of records in accordance with current Town bylaw.

• Acts as the FOIP Coordinator to manage the requirements of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) legislation with regard to the Town’s record keeping, protection of privacy and access to information. Manages FOIP access requests, answers questions and upholds privacy provisions. Schedules regular training sessions on FOIP legislation for all staff.

As we move head fi rst into yet another year; we focus, do inventory and consider how to embrace this 2015. What we make of it, will totally depend on our attitude. I came upon this wonderful little story recently that so illustrates that.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fl uid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time fl at on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their jobs, their involvement in the military service and so on.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live, for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water, while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst fl owers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, he described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn’t hear the

band - he could see it. In his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to fi nd the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his fi rst look at the world outside.

Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained slowly to turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his roommate to describe such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you!”

My dad used to say, “son, life is what you make it. So make it all it can be.” When you look out the window of life this year, what are you going to see? Today is a gift, that’s why it is called the present.

Samson hoping for urgent care response by end of month

The future of enhanced health care in Sylvan Lake remains uncertain, but town officials and dedicated urgent care committee members are optimistic that good news is on the way.

Susan Samson, chair of the Community Advisory Committee, said a business plan was submitted to the province in early November after Sylvan Lake was identified by Alberta Health as one of nine communities eligible for a provincially funded Family Care Centre. Also at that time, $45 million to fund start-up costs and the first year of operation for the successful community candidates was set aside by Alberta Health.

In April of last year, Alberta Health approved the planning work and concept pro-vided by the urgent care committee and asked for a full business plan.

“A project management/health care consul-tant was engaged in May to begin the extensive work on the required business plan. Over the summer, several meetings were held with community stake holders and health providers to complete a needs assessment or service gap analysis to determine the high priority health service needs in the overall area. The final meeting was a town hall meeting in September at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre,” notes an update on the Town of Sylvan Lake’s web-

site.The business plan included medical assis-

tance for non-life threatening injuries, extend-ed hours seven days a week, and access to necessary equipment, beds and medical pro-fessionals.

Despite the hours of preparation, including research and community input, the business plan hasn’t yet yielded a response from the government.

Samson said waiting is difficult.“I’m uncertain to even guess what will hap-

pen. I am hoping by the end of January there will be some indication that it will go ahead.”

She said uncertain economic times is cause for concern.

“The landscape is ever changing.”Samson noted Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean

McIntyre and council are 100 per cent behind the proposal.

“They are doing everything they can and promoting it at every opportunity.”

McIntyre agreed.“There is no higher priority,” he said. “We

are expecting to hear good news from the gov-ernment. We know it’s on their radar.”

While there seems to be some confusion as to what an enhanced care facility would be called, both Samson and McIntyre agree the name is of little relevance.

“I don’t care what they call it,” said Samson.“The name is not important,” agreed

McIntyre.

Urn among stolen items

Sylvan Lake RCMP are continuing their investigation into the theft of an urn along with several other items of value from a rural residence near Sylvan Lake last month.

Police say the property south of town was broken into between Dec. 17 and 27. A handmade wooden urn box storing cremated remains was taken along with two kittens.

Jewelry, two samurai swords, two laptops and a number of firearms were among the other items stolen.

A vehicle was also taken, but was later found in Penhold.Police are encouraging the person reponsible for the

thefts to consider turning in the stolen items — the urn, in particular.

“Obviously, this item is of significant sentimental impor-tance to the victim’s family,” notes a police statement issued last week. “Police would like to see this urn returned to the rightful owners, and are requesting the public’s assistance in locating it.”

Members of the public with any information on the sto-len items or kittens, or the person or people responsible for taking them, are asked to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-858-7200, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The future of one of Canada’s national sports in Sylvan Lake looks bright after the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers Lacrosse Association was granted autonomy from its Red Deer coun-terpart.

The Buccaneers have been trying to separate from Red Deer for the past three years, and were successful in doing so late last year.

Although the move arrives a year later than planned — due to an unavailability in scheduling caused by the Sylvan Lake Arena’s collapse — early indi-cations show it will help the sport thrive

locally.“We’re having a huge amount of people

registering already, so I think for our first year it’s going to be big,” said Teresa Ottenbreit, media co-ordinator for the

Buccaneers.Solid numbers had

already been tallied after just two days of registra-tion, which opened Jan. 6. Should numbers con-tinue to rise, it’s likely some age divisions — which range from Mini Tyke (born 2007/2008) to Midget (born 1997/1998) — will have more than one team.

Registration so far has seen a sharp increase over last year. Last year’s Peewee roster, for instance, had just 12 players, while this year, 16 had signed up

in the first two days of reg-istration. Numbers in Novice and Midget divi-sions were equally strong.

Though the Buccaneers have always played under the Sylvan Lake name, the organization previously operated under the Red Deer Lacrosse umbrella. Doing so required players to travel to Red Deer for tryouts and other team activities.

“Now we are on our own, we are no longer under-neath Red Deer, we have control,” said Ottenbreit. “It will be nice to have it here and to grow it (lacrosse) here.”

An Open House at the Community Centre Jan. 27 will aim to do just that, and will bring awareness to the community of the Buccaneers’ existence. The 7-9 p.m. event will also act as something of an intro-duction to the sport for those who may be unfamil-iar with it.

“Some of the older kids will show the littler kids that are interested, but have never played, kind of what it’s about,” said Ottenbreit.

The president of the Central Alberta Lacrosse League, in which the Buccaneers compete, will also be on hand for a ques-tion-and-answer session.

Player evaluations will take place in spring. All home games are played at the Sylvan Lake Multiplex.

LITTLEMaxwell GeorgeMaxwell George Little passed away peacefully on January 13, 2015 at the age of 85 years, following a brief illness.Max was born in Calgary and spent all of his life between Calgary and Sylvan Lake. In 1970, he married the love of his life, Yvonne, and took on the role of father to her 3 amazing children. Max spent 47 years working for General Electric out of Calgary, where he was a salesman. After retiring in 1994, Max devoted his time to spending time with

family and friends. He enjoyed golfi ng, curling and spending time at the Legion and cabin. Max will be deeply missed by his 5 loving children: Darcy(Cheryl), Dwight(Karen), Crystal(Rob), Patrick(Andrea) and Candice(Harvey), as well as 13 grandchildren and 2 precious great grandchildren. He will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and family friends. He was predeceased by his wife Yvonne Little (nee Cairns), his parents William and Mary Little, and his brother William “Bill” Little. A memorial service was held at the Chapel of the Sylvan Lake Funeral Home in Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. Sylvan Lake Nauticals travelled to Edmonton Jan. 9, 10 and 11 to compete at the Blue Bears swim meet, with eight swimmers.

On Saturday evening, the boys relay team, consisting of Noah Andrews (13), Michael Carson (13), Tyler Gauthier (15) and Matthew Gauthier (15), took to the starting blocks for the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and fin-ished strong with a time of 1:56.08. As they were cele-brating their new club record, an announcement over the PA system was heard: “Heat 1, Lane 4, disqualifica-tion.” The team was disqualified for an early takeover. No club record on this day for the boys team; however, they did achieve a fantastic time.

Up next was the girls relay team, consisting of Elizabeth Moore (13), Ann Duffy (16), Zoe DeJonge (11) and Amber Carson (16). It was their turn at the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Their time of 2:03.90 was good for a new club record for the 16-year-old girls category. On this evening, the girls finished eighth.

Sunday evening was another chance for the two relay

teams to break the 4 x 50m medley relay club records, and this time the boys did not disappoint. The team of Noah Andrews, Matthew Gauthier, Tyler Gauthier and Michael Carson were seeded for in event in eighth place and finished sixth. They finished with a time of 2:14.27, and in the process broke the old club record of 2:43.67 for 15-year-old boys.

The pressure was on now for the girls relay team, consisting of Ann Duffy, Elizabeth Moore, Amber Carson and Zoe DeJonge. Once again, the girls deliv-ered, finishing fourth with a time of 2:16.24, and setting a new club record for the 16-year-old girls category.

In the individual events over the weekend, the boys did a great job making numerous finals. Matthew Gauthier achieved his 15-year-old A time in an exciting race in the 200m breaststroke final. Matthew also qualified for five other finals: 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Tyler Gauthier competed in six events and qualified for the 200m breaststroke final. Noah Andrews swam in six events and made finals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and the 100m butterfly. Michael Carson swam in six events and made finals in the 100m butterfly, and

earned the 200m breaststroke club record for 13-year-old boys.

The girls also had a great showing as Elizabeth Moore achieved her 13-year-old A time in the 200m freestyle, her 14-year-old national qualifying time in the 100m and 200m butterfly and her 16-year-old-and-over western qualifying time in the 200m butterfly. Elizabeth also broke six club records in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, the 100m, and 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley, and qualified for finals in the 100m and 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 50m and 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Amber Carson broke the 16-year-old girls 50m free-style club record while swimming in five events and qualifying in two finals: the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle. Ann Duffy swam in seven events, achieving a club record in the 200m breaststroke for 16-year-old girls and making finals in the 200m breaststroke and 100m backstroke. Zoe DeJonge swam in seven events and qualified for the 100m backstroke and 50m free-style finals.

The swimmers are now back in the pool practicing hard for upcoming meets in Edmonton and Red Deer.

January 101:51 a.m. – RCMP received a 911 call

from a complainant advising that a female was intoxicated at a residence located on Township Road 370 in Red Deer County and was causing a distur-bance.

The 21-year-old female was refusing to remain at the residence and wanted to walk to Spruce View. The complainant advised that she was concerned for the woman’s welfare. Police arrived and transported the female to cells where she was lodged until sober.

January 116:17 p.m. – A 72-year-old male is fac-

ing charges in relation to a traffic stop on Range Road 13 just south of Sylvan Lake. The male was stopped roadside by RCMP after the vehicle was observed to be trav-eling in an erratic pattern. A roadside screening device was utilized and the male was arrested at the scene. The male, a resident of Penhold, is charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08.

January 1311:37 p.m. – A vehicle stop on

Highway 11 resulted in Criminal Code charges against the driver. RCMP ini-tially stopped the driver for speeding; however, the driver exhibited signs of impairment.

Further investigation resulted in a 38-year-old Calgary male being charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over. 08. He is also charged with speeding and driving while unauthorized under the Traffic Safety Act.

January 148:54 p.m. – RCMP attended a mis-

chief complaint at a residence on Lucky Place in Sylvan Lake. A 911 call was received by a female advising that her neighbours were knocking at the door and kicking at it. Police investigated and

determined that no assault has taken place and no damage had occurred. The residents were advised to stay off each other’s property and to minimize con-tact.

10:03 p.m. – A call to RCMP dispatch resulted in police attendance at a resi-dence in Eckville. A caller reported a family dispute between three females. A verbal dispute was escalating and there was concern it may become physical. Police attended and all parties agreed to separate to different rooms in the resi-dence.

A verbal warning was issued that charges would be laid if those involved were not able to resolve the issue and further police attendance was required.

January 162:40 p.m. – RCMP were called to the

Mac’s store in Sylvan Lake after a report of two youths involved in an assault at that location.

A witness reported seeing one male pushing another and they were last seen heading westbound on Sylvan Drive. Another male was witnessed trying to break up the fight. Patrols were made in the area but the males had departed.

7:52 p.m. – A witness reported two suspicious males attempting to enter a residence on Garden Court in Sylvan Lake. RCMP conducted a patrol and two males matching the witness description were located inside a vehicle near the residence.

They advised police that they heard about a party at that location. One of the males had consumed alcohol and the other did not possess a driver’s license so the keys to the vehicle were confiscated until the owner was sober and able to collect them. The males were instructed to leave the area.

The crowd who gathered at a Sylvan Lake Chamber luncheon to listen to the finance minister’s take on Alberta’s future as oil prices continue to plunge were not given any definitive answers, but the message presented was not all doom and gloom.

Alberta Finance Minister Robin Campbell assured those in attendance at the luncheon held last Friday at Hockey Central that government officials now at the helm of the province were capable and trustworthy. He stressed that Albertans could rest assured there wouldn’t be a repeat of past mistakes such as drastic cuts to infrastructure.

“Our government’s not going to make that mistake again,” he said.

However, the finance minister stressed today’s government is looking at “sound fiscal management,” adding programs and ini-tiatives such as the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) need to be reviewed.

“MSI has to go to communities that actually need it,’ he said.Health care, human services, education from Kindergarten to

Grade 12 and post-secondary education remain the government’s

priority, he said, adding the population is continuing to expand, which means the construction of new schools will be necessary.

“We are the only province that has more assets than liabilities,” he said.

“Everyone realizes oil prices are a challenge, but Albertans are amazingly strong and resilient,” he added.

While he said neither he nor the premier are in favour of a sales tax, he noted the possibility hasn’t been eliminated, nor has bringing back health care premiums.

Campbell plans to travel across the province to speak to com-munities about the province’s economic future.

Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre and town council met with Campbell after the meeting.

“He listened to our concerns and we talked in length about urgent care,” said McIntyre, noting he is expecting the health minister to visit Sylvan Lake to talk about ensuing plans before spring.

McIntyre said he was encouraged by the meeting, noting that although the minster has stressed a no-frills budget was forth-coming, it didn’t appear projects planned for Sylvan Lake were in jeopardy.

He said he is confident a school planned to be constructed on Beacon Hill is on schedule, the MSI grant for 2015 should be intact and there are no planned changes to a CFEP grant.

Funding for the Water for Life program should also continue, he said.

“There didn’t seem to be any bad news for Sylvan Lake,” he said.
