Concerns about Syllabus/Class

1.) I am very concerned about 94% and above being an A. Given Regents scholarship and business honors academy requirements, I aim for an A in every class.

2.) In the Essay Projects portion of the syllabus, I was surprised to read that A 5 page paper can, at best receive a B- [] A 7 page paper will be considered for an A. As a writer that prefers quality over quantity, I felt quantity seemed stressed in the grading approach of this class.

3.) As an avid user of ratemyprofessor.com I was initially frightened to see that the Professor received a 2.5 overall rating. I was relieved to see that this was because only 2 disgruntled students had written reviews. After communicating via e-mail in regard to my time restrictions, I felt relieved yet again by her empathy and understanding to make this class work for me.

Ways to Make This a Successful Class

1.) I will participate each day for more than several hours.

2.) I will read the syllabus before each writing/reading in order to format correctly.

3.) I will communicate to the teacher if I have questions or concerns.

3 Things I hope to Learn

1.) I will learn how to effectively dictate my thoughts on paper.

2.) I hope to become a better analyzer when it comes to reading high-level documents.

3.) I hope to voice my opinions on paper without alienating an individual reader that doesnt agree with my opinions.

Grade I Hope to Receive

I hope to earn an A in this class. To earn this grade, I must work hard each and every day. I must follow the syllabus and write with content, clarity, and craft. I must turn in all my papers the day they are due.

How to Best Facilitate This Class for Success

I believe that the Professor can best facilitate success in this class by grading papers as quickly as possible. By doing so, I will not make the same mistakes on the papers I write the following day. I will also know my grade in the class and be able to gauge the amount of time I should put into each paper during the first week of class.

I believe that constructive feedback is the best way to learn from writing as I will be able to utilize the skills of my professor and allow my writing to be put in the right direction moving forward. I have communicated to the professor about my time constraints with my full-time internship this summer and I will communicate with the professor if the workload is too overbearing.

Conception/Misconception in this Class

Conceptions provide an existing set of thinking before self-application. That being said, misconceptions occur. In this class, it is easy to enter English 150 with the mindset of misconceived notions. TheIntroduction to the Conversationgives us a list of misconceptions including: the rules of writing are universal, writing is mostly about getting grammar correct, and more. All these misconceptions can happen in this class if the syllabus wasnt read. Our syllabus clearly states that writing is judged by content, clarity, and craft. These three criteria help combat the misconceptions that hinder successful writing.

Construct in this Class

English 150 Section 800 allows us to construct our own ideas and formulate them into writing prompts, discussion boards, and essays. Constructs can be negative misconceptions as well. Plagiarism is every students worst nightmare and can unintentionally be the downfall of ones reputation and/or career. I hope to construct insightful and unique ideas, dialogue, and rhetoric between me, the professor, and my colleagues.

Threshold Concept in this Class

Threshold Concepts test the depths that writers are willing and able to go. As a UNL student who writes very little, my threshold is much smaller than English major who writes daily. However, with each writing assignment I am able to test my limits and continue to expand my writing threshold. I believe that the difference between my first writing prompt to my final portfolio in this class will be night and day. In the end, my threshold concept will be greater after completing this course.
