Course Description (1)Birmingham is a short drive from

the area described as the “Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution”, Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire. We will study the scientific and technological advances associated with this period with a particular focus on the chemical basis for these advances.

Page 4: Syllabus. Course Goals (Lib Ed Cat 5) Increase knowledge of chemistry, lives of chemists and contemporary “green chemistry” approaches in the context.

Course Description (2)We will learn about the

contributions of some 18th and 19th century British chemists with a particular emphasis on individuals whose work furthered the Industrial Revolution and/or who had a connection to Birmingham and the Midlands.

Course Description (3)We will also study the impact of the

Industrial Revolution on society including the production of pollution and green house gases. In the context of contemporary industrialization, we will identify “green chemistry” solutions to the deleterious effects of the Industrial Revolution.
