Credit Area: Technology Education Elective

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Credit: 1 Credit = 2 semesters

Course Description:

Introduction to Engineering Design is an introductory course, which develops student problem-

solving skills, with emphasis placed upon the concept of developing a 3-D model or solid

rendering of an object. Students focus on the application of visualization processes and tools

provided by the use of Autodesk Inventor software. The course will emphasize the design

development process of a product and how a model of that product is produced, analyzed and

evaluated using a design system. Other key concepts include: technical drawing, measurement

and statistics, geometric shapes, dimensions and tolerances, reverse engineering and design

problems.

Outcomes:

Students in the Introduction to Engineering Design program will develop:

• an understanding of the core concepts, characteristics and scope of technology.

• an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between

technology and other fields of study.

• an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of technology.

• an understanding of the effects of technology on the environment.

• an understanding of the role of society in the development and use of technology.

• an understanding of the influence of technology on history.

• an understanding of the attributes of design.

• an understanding of engineering design and the abilities to apply the design process.

• an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and

innovation, and experimentation in problem solving.

• the abilities to use and maintain technological products and systems.

• the abilities to assess the impact of products and systems.

• an understanding of and be able to select and use medical technologies, agricultural and

related biotechnologies, energy and power technologies, information and communication

technologies, transportation technologies, manufacturing technologies, and construction

technologies.
