Prerequisite: English Plus 2 nd Semester, A.Y. 2009-2010 Vision A university which shapes a global Filipino imbued with moral courage nurtured through values and excellent education. Mission Batangas State University (BSU) is committed to implement its mandates of quality and excellence, relevance and responsiveness, access and equity, and efficiency and effectiveness through instruction, research, extension and production to meet the growing needs of the country and the world for globally competitive and morally upright professionals, scientists, technologists, technicians, skilled workers and entrepreneurs. CTE Goal The College of Teacher Education (CTE) aims to develop future elementary, secondary and technology school teachers who are imbued with ideals of humanist, with the sense of respect for the advancement of Philippine life and culture and with a genuine desire to facilitate learning and be conveyors of knowledge and values in all disciplines with excellence and global competitiveness. Description of the Course This is a preparatory course to the study of communication arts skills with emphasis on advance grammar and composition. Scope The course is divided into four areas of study namely; Words, Phrases, Sentences, and Paragraph and Composition. Course Objectives By the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1. acquire adequate knowledge of rudiments of the English Language needed for academic study through various strategies 2. learn critically grammatical structure necessary for communicative functions 3. develop the ability to see the grammatical relationship between words, group of words and sentences within discourse level 4. develop the ability to use cohesive device to come up with a meaningful discourse 5. enhance their interest in learning English as a second language Course Requirements 1. Regular class attendance 2. Class involvement 3. Presentation of group dynamics 4. Submission of assignments 5. Passing grades in major examinations/quizzes 6. Submission of research work

Grading System The criteria for grading as are follows:

60% major examinations – (prelim, midterm, semi-final, and final) 40% class standing (10% – project and presentations, 10% –

quizzes, 10% – class participation, 10% – attendance) ____ 100%
