SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE INTELLIGENT EVOLUTION

Case Study

IMPLEMENTATION

In 2015, the Opera House engaged Honeywell to modernise its aging building management and control system that had been installed in the 1990s. The goals were to modernise the building controls, improve reporting capabilities, introduce building analytics to improve business outcomes without impacting patron or staff comfort and most importantly, to provide a platform from which the system could be grown and developed as business needs evolve.

This intelligent transformation included a complete upgrade of its end of life building management control system spanning across over 60 plantrooms,

almost 60 Air Handling Units and more than 110 Fan Coil Units with integration to over 15 third party systems. In addition, a number of conditions had to be maintained to ensure the on-site visitor experience was not impacted, meaning the team worked after shows ended and before morning rehearsals began.

Key to the entire project was Honeywell’s commitment to meeting one of the Sydney Opera House’s main requirements: to remain open and operate “business as usual” throughout the implementation. A 24/7 workflow was devised to ensure zero disruption to performances.

“The Sydney Opera House has always been ahead of its time, and this spirit of innovation is even more important today as we prepare the building for future generations of artists, audiences and visitors.” Simon Dwyer, Senior Projects Manager, Sydney Opera House.

“We needed an intelligent and integrated system to give our staff and contractors visibility and operational oversight. This evolution of our systems in partnership with Honeywell has enabled us to continue to deliver the best possible experience for our visitors.”

OVERVIEWSince the Sydney Opera House opened its doors over 40 years ago, it has been on the cutting edge of building innovation. 2013 marked the Opera House’s 40th anniversary and the commencement of a $270 million Decade of Renewal Project to update it for future generations of artists, audiences and visitors by its 50th anniversary in 2023.

FAST FACTS OVERVIEW

Intelligent Technology for Today and Tomorrow

Honeywell engineered a integrated building control system powered by Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI), Command and Control Suite and ComfortPoint Open controllers. Working closely with the Opera House’s engineering team, Honeywell designed the system for a reduced energy footprint utilising the Opera House’s unique sea water cooling system to improve comfort levels with smart performance-based scheduling and intelligent analytics.

TECHNOLOGY SNAPSHOT

Four distributed and redundant EBI servers and six point servers connect over 25,000 points from 15+ extra low voltage systems and publish over 1,000 graphic pages.

Facility-wide Energy Management System with over 200 metres monitoring gas, water and electricity for the facility site.

HVAC Building Management Controls System including 70+ ComfortPoint IP controllers and 4,000 BMS hardware points.

Multiple third party system interfaces including chillers, CRACs, VSDs and pump control panels.

Flexibility and extensibility to cater for 20+ concurrent users accessing the system through a diversity of workstations, Command Wall, Command Console, laptops and mobile devices.

OUTCOMES

Honeywell provided the Opera House with a single facility management platform which has unlocked an unprecedented level of visibility and control. The Opera House’s EBI is unique in that it is used by over 100 different operators from facility managers to a wide range of maintenance contractors including mechanical engineers, plumbers, electricians and even security guards and stage managers around the clock. The Honeywell user experience team worked closely with the Opera House to develop an EBI interface that allowed any operator to intuitively navigate any part of the system and quickly find only the needed information. This ease-of-use promotes the smooth operations of this critical facility 24x7 363 days per year.

Ability to effectively manage their energy index providing the visibility needed to achieve the goal of becoming a five star Green Star-Performance rated building.

User-friendly graphical interface that allows operators to intuitively navigate any part of the system and quickly find only the information the need.

Integrated Building Management Controls System has helped the Opera House to be on target to reduce energy usage by 16% by the end of 2019.

The new Honeywell Building Management Control System allows the Opera House to automatically schedule air-conditioning by interfacing with its ticketing system so that the performance venues are at the optimum temperature during a show and saving energy when not occupied.

Real-time insight and diagnostics of all building systems from mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire and life safety systems and lift monitoring for better building performance.

The Command and Control Suite enables Opera House operators to quickly indentify issues and respond to them. It is linked to all of the other subsystems so any issues can be alarmed, quickly reviewed and an operator dispatched.

LOOKING FORWARD

The Opera House has long been recognised as a triumph of engineering, architecture and innovation. Today, with its investment in future-forward technologies, the Opera House will continue to deliver the experience of a lifetime to generations of visitors to come.

“With the EBI we have the one window into the world that gives us information on all our systems and their subsystems. Our goal is to become a five star Green Star-Performance rated building by the end of 2018. The EBI allows us to monitor how our systems are performing and make adjustments to ensure energy efficiency is as high as it possibly can be,” said Dwyer.
