Sahaja Yoga Sweden What is Sahaja Yoga? “Sahaja” means spontaneous and “Yoga” means union with the all pervading power. This union is a completely natural state, which we have forgotten but it is achieved when we ask for our Self Realisation. What is Sahaja Yoga? “Sahaja” means spontaneous and “Yoga” means union with the all pervading power. This union is a completely natural state, which we have forgotten but it is achieved when we ask for our Self Realisation.

What is meditation ?

Meditation is a state of mind where we don’t think. Often we are thinking the whole day about what has happened and what will happen. Of course it is necessary to think sometimes but we don’t have to think all the time because it makes us tired. Sometimes our thoughts spin round and round and return to the same point all the time. Meditation will slow down the thoughts until they finally stop and then our mind becomes absolutely peaceful.

Self Realisation

Self realisation is a process where our inner motherly energy, Mother Kundalini, is awakened. She has looked after us since birth, she comforts us, she heals our wounds and protects us from danger. During our whole life she has patiently waited for us to ask her to wake up so that we can reach our full potential as human beings.

Shri Mataji Shri Mataji started Sahaja Yoga in 1970. The earlier forms of Yoga were only available to small group of people, mainly in India. A Guru had a number of disciples and after many years of training and clearing of their energy system, one of the disciples achieved self realisation. In this way the knowledge was kept a secret because the majority of mankind was not ready to receive this knowledge. However, thanks to Shri Mataji it is now possible for all mankind to receive their Self Realisation. Sahaja Yoga has now spread throughout the world to over a 100 countries and are practiced by thousands of people from all different backgrounds and is always free.

Shri Mataji was born in 1923 in a Christian family in India. The family was close to Gandhi and Shri Mataji spent time in Gandhi’s ashram as a little girl. He saw her wisdom and asked her for advice in spiritual matters. When Shri Mataji was a student at a medical college she participated in India’s struggle for freedom. Both her parents were also active and were put in jail several times. Eventually India gained it’s freedom and Shri Mataji married and got two daughters. When they were grown up and married Shri Mataji could focus on her life task, to create Sahaja Yoga.

The subtle system

The subtle system was the discovered in India thousands years ago and helps us to understand ourselves as human beings.

It includes seven chakras and three channels as is shown on the picture below.

The Chakras are energy centers, which represent different human qualities such as courage and forgiveness. When there is a blockage in one of the centers its strength is weakened. For example is we have a blockage in the Anahata (the 4th centre) we become a more fearful person. If we clear the chakra our courage is restored. It is the same with the channels; if there are blockages we function not as good as we would if the channels were clear.

With the help of Sahaja Yoga you will be able to clear your subtle system. It will not be done over night but with patience and consistency you will gradually feel an improvement.

Properties

Mooladhara is placed at the bottom of the spine. In Sanskrit the name means “ the support of Kundalini”. This chakra is the foundation of the Subtle System and supports all the other Chakras.

Function

Mooladhara controls the excretion and reproductive organs. It governs the sexual aspect of a human being. From time to time false Gurus have tried to awaken Kundalini through sex (tantrism). This is very dangerous and causes a lot of damage on this chakra. Sex is a natural part of life but not a part of our spiritual development. Mooladhara is the key to Kundalini and anything that is not innocent can damage it.

Innocence

The basic quality of Mooladhara is innocence. This human quality is very strong in us when we are children and is the foundation in an ethical personality. An innocent person acts without calculation or any desire of gaining anything for themselves.

Properties

Swadisthana moves in a circle around the Nabhi Chakra and is the centre of creativity, aesthetics and pure knowledge. Swadisthana connects us with our inner source of creativity and allows us to experience all the beautiful things around us. The pure knowledge in the Swadisthana is not mental but a direct experience of reality.

Function

Swadhisthana is the centre for our intellectual perception and ability to concentrate. Excessive thinking drains this chakra of energy.

Attention

Together with Nabhi (the 3rd chakra) Swadisthana controls the liver. The liver is a very important organ since it is the seat of our attention.

There is a difference between attention and thinking. Pure attention is to be in focus but without thoughts.

If the chakra is completely out of balance we can end up having diabetes or even blood cancer.

Properties

Nabhi is the centre of our well being, physically as well as economically. Prosperity is a necessary step in evolution just as money is a practical means for a human being to full his or her fundamental needs.

If we don’t have a basic safety in our lives our attention will go to simple survival. But when these needs are being taken care of we don’t need to focus on the material any more but we can dedicate our lives to our spiritual development.

Greed leads to a stagnation in our spiritual evolution and creates crisis on the macro level such as financial crisis and environmental pollution.

Function

Blockage on the left aspect of this chakra can lead to problems in the household. After self realisation we learn that we are protected and that all is well.

Satisfaction

The keywords of Nabhi are inner satisfaction. A person who has a hot temper and lacks patience is often worried inside and shows his or hers discomfort to the outside world. By balancing Nabhi we get more satisfied with our lives.

Properties

The void is created by Swadisthana which rotates around Nabhi. Through the rotation an area of a void is created and its also called the ocean of illusions. We will have to sail over this ocean to be permitted to receive the absolute truth.

When Mother Kundalini rises our attention is guided through our illusions towards a higher consciousness.

Dharma

In the void our Dharma (ethics) is created. Dharma describes what is right or wrong and never changes. It is not an outer set of ethical rules but an inner law system that guides us through our lives. Through Self Realisation we become aware of these laws. It is important that they can only guide us because we always have our free will to do what we want.

Satisfaction

When we clear the void our priorities change. We drop out bad habits and spend more time on our spiritual development. Socrates said ”Know thyself”. Through self knowledge we can see our shortcomings and with the help of meditation we can also gradually get rid of them.

If Anahata is in balance we take responsibility for the right things. We take responsibility for our own lives, our own behaviour towards ourselves and others people.

Anahata also represents courage. The courage to stand up for who we are, to keep our convictions, to face the unknown of the outer world and inside ourselves.

Properties

Anahata is placed at the centre of our chest. It’s most important quality is love. When Mother Kundalini enlightens our Anahata we become more self confident and balanced. When Anahata is balanced we can experience the pure joy of just existing. Joy is separated from the contradictions of happiness and unhappiness. Joy is an absolute feeling of silence, harmony and balance.

Function

The physical function of Anahata is that it produces antibodies that protects us from illnesses.

Atma (the spirit)

In Anahata is our true self, the Atma or the Spirit. We are not our physical body, we are not our thoughts or feelings but we are the Atma, which is pure and indestructible. When we receive our Self Realisation Mother Kundalini brings the Atma up to Sahasrara ( the 7th Chakra) which gives us a state of stillness without thoughts.

Properties

Vishuddhi is placed in the throat and if it is balanced we communicate well with other people. We can feel that we are a part of humanity and that we are all one. Through Vishuddhi we have the possibility to express ourselves in a diplomatic, polite and kind way.

We also learn the skill of accepting our own and others mistakes without feeling guilty.

Witnessing

Another quality of Vishuddhi is to witnessing ourselves. We see life as a drama where we are actors who are trying to play our parts as well as we can. With this attitude we are not constantly drawn into different emotional crisis but can keep a healthy distance to the things we are experiencing. This doesn’t mean that we should turn of our feelings. It is important to have feelings but we should not let them control our lives.

We can with a tranquil mind meet every challenge we face. We don’t let outside things disturb us but we see life as a game that is to be played. Then we can also take ourselves less seriously and by laughing at ourselves life becomes much easier to live.

Properties

Agnya is placed in the middle of the forehead. It is the door to Sahasrara, which we only can enter when we forgive. When Mother Kundalini passes through this chakra we stop thinking and start to enjoy a wonderful silence within.

Function

The human brain is divided into Ego and Superego. They are placed on top of the left and right channel. The channels are crossing each other in Agnya.

Forgiveness

Memories, habits and emotions are gathered in the Superego – in the right part of the brain. Actions, planning and thoughts are gathered in the Ego – in the left part of the brain.If there is an unbalance in the Superego we are often tired and sad, this blocks Mother Kundalini from reaching Sahasrara. If there is an unbalance in the Ego we get overactive and want to plan every detail of our lives. Also here Mother Kundalini cannot reach Sahasrara and we will not be able to receive our Self Realisation. The solution to both of these problems is to forgive.

Properties

Sahasrara is placed on the top of our heads, on the fontanel. Here the whole subtle energy system is integrated because all the chakras are represented here.

Function

When Mother Kundalini reaches Sahasrara it’s petals open and we attain Self Realisation. We can then feel a subtle pulsation on top of our heads. This soon passes on to a soft feeling, a cool breeze of vibrations. This is the real baptising that makes us feel that we are born again.

The Union

When the Self Realisation is established our individual consciousness (Atma) becomes connected to the universal consciousness (Paramatma).

Then we can feel that we are a part of the whole humanity.

The Left Channel (Ida Nadi) Function: The left side represents our past and our subconscious. It expresses our desires, our emotions and our memories. Unbalances on the left side causes fatigue, passivity and sadness.

Properties: A left sided person is an intuitive and emotional human being who thinks a lot of the past. He or she can easily get stuck in bad habits, has a bad self-confidence and is often dominated by others.

Examples of unbalances: Low blood pressure, infections, mental diseases and epilepsy.

The Right Channel (Pingala Nadi) Function: The right channel represents the future and reason. We are used to thinking, acting and planing. Unbalances on the right channel are caused by over activity, for example planning too much.

Properties: Right sided people are outgoing and overactive. They have difficulties to wind down and find peace within themselves. They are often aggressive, can dominate others and like to argue. They work a lot and take on to many responsibilities. Their emotions are suppressed and they are insensitive to how other people feel.

Examples of unbalances: Stress, high blood pressure, headaches, and problems with the heart, liver and kidneys.

The Center Channel (Sushumna Nadi) Function: The centre channel is the channel where Mother Kundalini is rising. When she is awakened she takes our attention to the centre channel and gives us balance. The centre channel represents the present, and dharma (ethics). It is also the channel for the human evolution, how we have evolved from Amoeba to Homo Sapiens. Throughout history one chakra has been established at the right time causing major leaps in the evolution. Our goal is to always be in the centre channel and to avoid extremes. That is how we will evolve spiritually.

1. Put your hand on your heart and ask (3 times):Mother, who am I?

2. Put your hand on the upper part of the abdomen on the left side and ask (3 times):Mother, am I my own Master?

3. Put your hand on the lower part of the abdomen on the left side and say (6 times):Mother, please give me the pure knowledge.

4. Put your hand on the upper part of the abdomen again and say (10 times):Mother, I am my own Master.

5. Put your hand on your heart again and say (12 times):Mother I am the pure Atma.

6. Put your hand on the left side of the neck. Turn your head softly to the right and say (16 times):Mother I am not guilty.

7. Put your hand on your forehead and say (any amount of times):Mother I forgive everybody and I forgive myself.8. Put your hand on the backside of your head and say (any amount of times):Mother, please forgive me for the mistakes I have done.

9. Put your hand on top of the head, stretch your fingers backward en press your hand on the head. Turn your hand 7 times clockwise and say (7 times): Mother, please give me my self realisation.

Preparations

To get started create a place in your home which you are using for your meditation. It can be a corner of your living room or if you have the possibility to have a separate room it is even better. If you want you can use a photo-graph of Shri Mataji and light a candle in front of it (you can use the picture on the last page). Shri Mataji has her complete Kundalini power enlightened and by using the picture it helps our own Mother Kundalini to rise more easily.

The meditation

Sit comfortably on the floor or on a chair with palms facing up. Use the affirmations on this page and put your hand on the respective place on the body.

Conclusion

Sit with your attention on top of the head for some time. Conclude the meditation by lifting Kundalini and taking Bandhan (see next page). If you want to have some variation you can just sit for 5-10 minutes with your attention on top of your head with or without music. If it’s

Lifting Kundalini Start by putting your left hand in front of the lower part of your abdomen with the palm facing yourself. Rotate the right hand around the left hand and lift both hands along the body and up above your head. Tie a knot above your head. Repeat this 3 times. The third time you tie 3 knots. This is an exercise that helps us to keep our attention in Sahasrara.

Bandhan Bandhan means protection in Sanskrit and is an exercise that protects the seven chakras. Keep your left hand on your knee with the palm facing up. Put your right hand at your left hip and lift the hand above your head and down to your right hip. Then go the same way back, lift your hand above your head and down to the left hip. Do this movement seven times, one for each chakra. It is very good to lift Kundalini and take Bandhan when we are leaving our homes.

With the hands Balancing the left side: If you feel tired you can balance the left side with this exercise. Sit on the floor or on a chair and put your left hand on your lap with the palm facing up. Put your right hand on the floor or point it towards the floor. Sit like that for some time with your attention on top of your head and just let go of all the negativity in your left channel as it moves out from your right hand into Mother Earth.

Balancing the right side: If you are overactive you can balance the right side with this exercise. Put your right hand on your knee with the palm facing up. Lift the left hand towards the sky. Sit like that for some time with your attention on top of your head and just let go of all excessive heat in the right channel. You can imagine it is going out like smoke going out from a chimney.

Balancing the Chakras: Put your left hand on your knee with the palm facing up. Use your right hand and rotate in clockwise circles in front of the chakra you want to balance. Imagine that you are a clock and rotate in the direction of the hands. Now the negative energy in chakras are released and you can throw them away.

Foot soak This exercise is good to as evening meditation. Take a bowl of water and put a handful of salt (preferably sea salt) into it. If you feel overactive take cool water, if you feel tired take a bit warmer water. If you feel OK take lukewarm water.

Sit for ten minutes and let the saltwater absorb the negativity from your chakras. Rinse your feet and flush down the water in the toilet. Use the bowl and towel only for this purpose.

In the summer it’s nice to take a foot soak outdoors, in a lake or in the sea.

Icepack If you feel overactive use an icepack to cool down your liver. Use a normal ice pack that you use for your cool box. Put a towel around it and put it on the liver. The liver is placed on the right side of the stomach. Sit for a while with your attention on top of the head.

The Candle Treatment If you are feeling tired you can use a candle to work on your left side. Take a candle end and a small plate, you can use the ceramic plates that are used to put flowerpots on. Light the candle and let some stearin pour down on the plate. Fix the candle on the plate. Now you can move the candle up and down along your left channel. Remember when coming to the forehead the left channel is crossing over to the right side of the head.
