Tired of dealing with long security lines, seat

kickers, screaming children, and the other

common doldrums associated with air travel?

ICON aircraft offers you an easily solution:

buy your own plane. ICON aircraft is the

brainchild of motor sport enthusiast Kirk

Hawkins and skateboarder Steen Strand.

Together, these two entrepreneurs have worked

together to make the world of personal sport

aircraft accessible for everyone. Now, for the

low, low price of $139,000 (and a security

deposit of $5000), the gift of flight can be yours.

In 2004, the FAA reduced the requirements

for earning one’s wings by creating the Sport

Pilot License. Drastically cutting the amount

of time and money it takes to learn to fly, the

SPL allows beginners to earn their license in

weeks and not months. The new SPL limits the

pilot (and one passenger) to daytime flying in

good weather with uncongested skies, making

it perfect for those who wish to get away

for the weekend without having to resort to

crowded freeways or stale peanuts in coach.

Taking advantage of these new and beginner-

friendly FAA regulations aimed at promoting

consumer recreational flying, Hawkins

and Strand have teamed up with ground

breaking engineers and designers to create

and manufacture the first line of light-sport

aircraft planes available to the public.

ICON hopes to revolutionize the world of

recreational aircraft by providing a plane that

is not only sleek, but also affordable. Their

new model, the A5, is part sports car, part

boat, part airplane, and one hundred percent

downright awesome. Given its features, the

A5 is ideal for recreational weekend warriors.

With its retractable wings, it’s compact enough

to be towed behind your car on weekend

trips to the lake. It’s efficient enough to

fly 300 miles on one, 20 gallon tank of

unleaded gas, and powerful enough to

carry you, your friend, and your luggage for

the weekend. Plus, you won’t have to lean

over the snoring guy next to you in order

to catch a glimpse of the Las Vegas strip.

The first round of flight testing has gone

smoothly, and ICON expects to begin

delivering the first round of nearly 300

pre-ordered planes to consumers by 2010.

The first Saturday of every May, America holds it

breath while watching the “greatest two minutes

in sports” take place in Louisville, Kentucky.

For an electrifying 120 seconds, America watches

as a fleet of three-year-old Thoroughbred

horses tears around the Churchill Downs

racetrack towards the finish line and the coveted

blanket of roses waiting to adorn the victor.

Most are familiar with the long-held traditions of

the Kentucky Derby: Mint Juleps, cheese grits,

designer dresses, oversized hats, revelry in the

infield, and celebrities crowding Millionaires

Row. However, this year Churchill Downs is

expanding its horizon and introducing several

new and equally entertaining traditions into the

mix. In hopes of turning a “two minute” event into

a “Derby week” experience, Churchill Downs

is promoting several other attractions. This year,

Derby-goers can plan ahead to attend parties,

charity events, and concerts, in addition to two

days of premium horse racing at Churchill Downs.

In celebration of the 135th Kentucky Derby,

and her 50th birthday, Barbie will be making a

special appearance. This year, Churchill Downs is

teaming up with Mattel to introduce the Kentucky

Derby Barbie doll. Dressed in a floral sun dress,

faux pear necklace, spring sandals, and (of course)

an oversized white hat with colorful flower

accents, the ultimate fashion icon is prepared

give stylish socialites and celebutantes a run for

their money. 135 life-sized versions of Barbie’s

hat, designed by milliner Christine A. Moore,

will be auctioned off and sold to benefit the

Clothes Off Our Back Foundation and associated

charities including Feeding America, The Art of

Elysium, Hope North, and H.E.L.P. Malawi. Those

interested in owning a made-to-order version of

Barbie’s hat should visit www.thederbystore.com.

Held the Friday before the Derby, the Oaks

Stakes is an equally popular race between

the nation’s top three-year-old fillies normally

drawing crowds upwards of 100,000. This year,

the Oaks will be “Pinked Out” in partnership

with Susan G. Kolmen for the Cure, the world’s

largest breast cancer foundation. In order to

raise money and awareness for breast cancer

research, Churchill Downs has agreed to donate

$1 for every attendee up to $135,000 in honor

of the 135th running of the race. Spectators

are encouraged to dress in their finest pink

outfits as a showing of support. Activities for

this year’s Oaks Day will include a survivor’s

parade, the honoring of Susan G. Komen’s

founder, Nancy G. Brinkler, as the First Lady

of Oaks, the first ever Kentucky Oaks winner’s

circle formed by breast cancer survivors, and

a competition between stylish attendees for the

First Lady of Fashion title and a VIP trip to New

York City Fashion Week. For more information,

please visit www.kentuckyoaks.com/Komen.

Bravo and its hit television show Top Chef will

also be in attendance for Derby weekend.

Several of the show’s “Chef-testants” will be

included in Bravo’s special one-hour telecast,

“Ladies First: Bravo at the Kentucky Derby,”

on May 1 from 5-6pm EDT. The program

will feature the food, fashion, and celebrity

experience associated with the Oaks

Day festivities including Churchill Downs’

partnership with Susan G. Komen. Coverage

of Derby Day events will also be provided by

Bravo, beginning with the celebrity red carpet

arrivals on May 2 beginning at 4pm EDT.

There is undoubtedly something for everyone

at this year’s Kentucky Derby and Oaks Stakes.

From Barbies to Mint Juleps, cheese grits to

Top Chefs, the fanfare and tradition of the

Kentucky Derby has expanded from a nail-biting

two minutes into a week-long experience.

The law of karma states, for every event

that occurs, there will follow another event

whose existence was caused by the first.

The Karma Foundation brings this concept of

karmic relevance to life. Eric Stotz, Chairman,

Founder, and CEO, along with his managing

partners Dylan Marer and Marvin Epstein, have

developed a unique platform, where high-class

enjoyment of the luxury lifestyle supports a

purpose driven pay-it-forward social activism.

As “The World’s Premier Luxury Lifestyle

Organization,” the Karma Foundation is

a membership association comprised of

established male and female entrepreneurs and

executives. The primary mission of this foundation

is to provide members with remarkable, upscale

lifestyle services and unique experiences that

will enrich their lives, expand their networks,

and benefit noble charitable causes. The four

pillars of the Karma Foundation experience

(Networking, Revelry, Philanthropy, and Ultimate

Access) each contribute a vital component to

this comprehensive membership service:

NETWORKING

“Karma is very pleased to have assembled

such an exclusive member base that includes

a worldwide community of philanthropists,

entertainment moguls, successful business

owners, and taste-makers” says Stotz. “These

individuals have all made a significant impact

in their specialized fields of industry.” Members

gather on a quarterly basis in posh surroundings,

for member only events called Roundtables.

These networking weekends provide the

perfect environment for members to expand

their business influence, exchange ideas, and

socialize with fellow captains of industry.

REVELRY

Karma’s Executive Producer Dylan Marer, has

created quite the reputation for producing

high profile, invitation only, world-class events

in support of noble, charitable causes. Dylan

has surpassed all expectations with Karma’s

“Kandy” branded events, including the

famous “Kandyland” and “Kandy Halloween.”

Marer explains, “Our Kandy events create

a sexy, fun, unique environment for Karma

Foundation members and guests which

include over one thousand, lovely ladies

hand picked from all over the world.” These

events have attracted international interest,

with attendees traveling from every part of the

globe to share in this exclusive experience.

This past February, Karma unveiled their latest

Kandy creation, the “Kandy Masquerade Ball”

at the Playboy Mansion. Kandy events are the

hottest ticket in town and sell out every year.

Be advised to mark your calendars for their

fourth annual “Kandyland” also held at the

Playboy Mansion, scheduled for June 6, 2009.

This summer’s extravaganza promises to be

the best yet, as featured guest attendees will

include international playmates from around the

world. In September, join Karma for the third

annual “Kandy Kruise,” the only full ship charter

of it’s kind. An unmatched excursion experience

that Karma Foundation President, Marvin

Epstein describes as a “high seas cocktail”

where guests “shake well and have fun.”

In addition to these exceptional marquee

events, Karma also hosts a “Luxe adventure

series” focused on high-end, exclusive

lifestyle experiences unique to the world’s

top destinations. Featured trips will soon

include ultra high-end ski vacations to Aspen,

GIVE

Vail and Whistler, resort experiences in

the Bahamas, St. Bart’s, Fiji, Thailand, and

Brazil, and exclusive celebrity experiences

including movie premieres, the Cannes Film

Festival, and the Sundance Film Festival.

PHILANTHROPY

The Karma Foundation has raised over three

hundred thousand dollars for various charities

around the world. A portion of the net proceeds

from every major Karma event is donated to these

selected charities. Philanthropic organizations

that have benefited from Karma fundraising

include Susan G. Komen Foundation, Torch

Foundation, March of Dimes, Head to Hollywood,

Pay it Forward Foundation, Marconi Foundation

for Kids, AIDS Walk Los Angeles, Canuck Place

Children’s Hospice, Do As One, and Children

Uniting Nations. Their latest philanthropy, Journey

Forward, a charity that focuses on individuals

with severe spinal injuries, will be the primary

beneficiary of this summer’s “Kandyland” event.

ULTIMATE ACCESS

The final piece of the Karma Foundation

experience is the “Ultimate Access Network.”

This is a unique global hospitality service

that provides members with unique and

exclusive travel opportunities. Services

include VIP access to the world’s hottest

nightlife spots, restaurants, golf courses,

sporting events, hotels, casinos, and resorts.

Karma’s “Luxe Services Network” is a

premium service that provides global access

to exclusive luxury benefits including exotic

car rentals, private yacht charter, private

jet charter, mansion rentals, and more.

What began as an idea for a pay-it-

forward community has developed into an

internationally recognized foundation. In just

four years, Stotz and his team are proud to

have built a worldwide trusted network of

successful industry leaders with a passion

for helping people throughout the world.

Talk about a dynamic woman! Morgan Beck,

22 is a current student at the University of

California, Berkeley. A born & bread, southern

California native, Morgan understands how

fortunate those of us living here are to reside in

one of the most beautiful places in the world.

When asked about what she loved most about

her hometown, Morgan stated, “It is the most

relaxing, beautiful, green, gorgeous place ever.

It has a bit of an east coast feel and I just love

the feeling of being home.” Although, she says,

and I quote “The food up here (in Berkeley)

is the bomb!”, Morgan looks forward to moving

back to the southern part of the state, to either

Newport or Huntington Beach, after she

completes her last semester at Berkeley.

Morgan recently finished her last college

volleyball season with the Golden Bears, head-

ing immediately to Egypt where she traveled

with US National Team to played against the

Egyptian National Team. She will graduate this

fall, with a degree in Sociology, completing

her college coursework in 3.5 years as she took

a full semester off to train for the Olympics

with the national volleyball team in Colorado

Springs. Although she did not make the Olympic

team this time, Morgan is still on the national

team and would like to continue playing

volleyball after college.

Morgan is excited to graduate and can’t wait

to get back to Southern California as she

admits, “I have missed living there so much.”.

Morgan plans to continue on the national team

or to transition to the beach, in pursuit of a

professional beach volleyball career. She also

has an interest in modeling. Think she’s got a

chance?? I’ll tell you one thing, as a person

who spends the majority of my life in sports

marketing, I would have no reservations about

picking Morgan up as a client. Let’s face

it readers,.. she’s a looker!

But this month’s SWOOP GIRL is much

more than just a pretty face. While traveling

abroad, Morgan witnessed poverty and

hunger first hand. After viewing some of

the living conditions where people are

stacked on top of each other in apartment

buildings, in a country whose population

increase is1.4 million people a year, Morgan

has been inspired to explore philanthropic

endeavors to help feed people who are

starving and dying from diseases. “It is

really humbling to experience” to realize

that “people can live like kings for $25 a

month”. Morgan is interested in encouraging

people to be more generous, even in these

times of economic struggle, as what would

be a very small amount to spare for us,

comparatively would make a huge difference

to inhabitants of third world countries.

FIRSTS, FAVORITES, & MOSTS

to him, “I’ll be taking her” and we walked out.

FIRST CAR

My 2002 Ford Explorer...she was sexy!

But I had to donate that car to my brother

for his 16th and I was so bummed so my

parents got me a 2002 sexy little C Class

It’s a cool afternoon at Barnacles Bar & Grill

in Hermosa Beach and Mike Siordia’s dreads are

fitfully trying to escape from his Rasta headgear.

He was born and raised in Hermosa and has

seen things change.

“Good, hard working people pushed East and

South. This (Hermosa) used to be the heart of

the South Bay and it’s being sold to the highest

bidder. The house I live in was built here in 1910.

”I roll my eyes at him. “You gonna’ make me

fact check that?”

“That’s what Hap Jacobs told me, and he

owns it.” Sidorida presses through a smile.

Hap Jacobs is a legendary surfer, shaper,

Hermosa Beach icon, and just one of the many

things that connects Siordia to the rich history of

surfing here in Hermosa. He was influenced by

Bobby Warcola and Mike Purpus, legends that he

not only grew up around but learned the sport

from. There was no idolization of some image on

TV, it was in his face everyday. Then it happened.

That AH HA moment in a 10-year-old’s life

when, in the shadow of the Hermosa Beach

Pier, he paddled into a wave on his own,

made the drop, and dipped into pure glass.

“This is what I want to do forever” he

thought. And that is what he does. A 12 year

veteran of competitive surfing, Siordia says

that he is over the scene. “You know,

everything has been done, so I just go back

and see what once worked and make it

work for me.”

Siordia makes it work on a quiver full of

history. From the experimental James Wheatly

twin fin to 9’5” nose riders to retro style fish

and glassed in short boards, he rides them

with passion and desire mixed with raw

talent. A definitive presence in any line up.

“Hippy Tree just found me. They had a

picture of me from the newspaper on their

“It seems to go back to reinventing yourself,”

says Andrew Sarnecki. He founded Hippy

Tree along with partner Josh Sweeny in

2003 as an alternative clothing company that

oozes style and turns its back on flash and

corporate morass. In Hippie Tree, Siordia has

found a place to showcase his timeless old

school style and charm.

“Siordia is a soulful, crafty guy.” Sarnecki

explains. “We are not an athletic-driven

brand. We don’t want to sponsor people,

we want ambassadors to spread the Hippy

Tree brand. Hippy Tree is a family, and we

look for like minds and someone who’s going

to spread that vibe. We don’t want to get

stale, and Siordia fits.”

Back at Barnacles, the shadows start creeping

and Siordia lights up, “I just want to smile

everyday and be a simple kind of man.”

WINTER NEVER ENDS FOR RISING STAR STEVE FISHER

It might be hard to believe that a guy who

is an X Games gold medalist and who always

seems to be at the top of the US Grand Prix

standings wouldn’t consider himself to be all

that competitive, but Steve Fisher makes

sure to keep his life in balance. At 26, “Fish”

is a seasoned member of the US snowboarding

team and is looking forward to going after

some Olympic hardware in 2010.

Like many extreme-sports athletes, he started

out on a skateboard. “As a young kid I was

always infatuated with skateboarding,”

he remembers. “I started when I was like six

years old and then I transferred to other board

sports: surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding.

There actually were a fair number of skate

parks, and there was a strong skate culture

where I grew up, in Minneapolis.

We’d build ramps in abandoned warehouses,

stuff like that. Not exactly the kind of place

where most parents would take their kids on

a Saturday morning.”

Surprisingly though, Steve says both his parents

have been supportive of his hobby-turned-

profession from the get-go. “My parents would

come and watch and they saw how much

I enjoyed skateboarding. So, in fourth or fifth

grade they brought home a snowboarding

magazine for me and later tried to find me

snowboarding equipment. I had to ski for a year

until we could get the kid-sized equipment.

But after that I literally spent every day going

to the local hills, and pretty much just taught

myself snowboarding.”

A few years back, Steve’s father was diagnosed

with prostate cancer, and Steve was there to

support his always-supportive dad every way

that he could. “Dad’s been cancer-free for four

years now, but after his diagnosis I started

working with this organization called Athletes

For A Cure. I felt it was kind of my duty as his

son to raise awareness at least and try to get

donations on top of that. Ultimately we’d like to

get prostate cancer awareness to the same level

as breast cancer. It’s like the steepest uphill

battle though because men don’t talk about their

health very often – it’s like they’re embarrassed.”

Last year, Steve had the opportunity to take a

bit of a break and spend 12 days in India for

a photo shoot with Transworld Snowboarding

Magazine. He says that all the traveling he’s

gotten to do over the years has taught him a lot.

“I’ve learned not to take what we have here in

the US for granted. For me, seeing the world and

traveling at kind of a young age, I feel like that

helps you get it. Americans bitch so much about

our country, but most of them haven’t had the

chance to see anything else. I see India and over

half of their country is living in poverty. We are

such a bunch of pansies. Traveling is one of the

best parts for me about what I do for a living –

getting to really understand what’s going on in

other parts of the world.”

As we talk, he is already looking forward to a

very busy Olympic-qualifying 2009. “This year

is very busy – there are a lot of contests on the

schedule,” he explains. “It started in December

and for the rest of the year there’s pretty much

one every week. I just have to pick the ones

Americans bitch so much

most of them haven’t had

the chance to see anything

else.

I want to do. I started competing my 2nd

year or so of snowboarding and it’s funny

that I’m on the competition circuit because

I’m really not a very competitive person.”

“How I look at this is different from day to day.

I always want to compete and do well at events,

but if things do kind of downturn for a while,

I just kind of remove myself from the competition

circuit and do a back-country trip. I kind of

know myself and I don’t let myself get sucked

in to taking it all too seriously. For me right now

it’s contest, contest, contest and then trying to

find time to do what I want to do in between.”

TRAVEL

COSTA RICA With my 8th pair

of flip-flops in the last

8 months, I stepped

off the plane and onto

Costa Rican soil. After

a month of humping up

and down mountains and

canyons in the Andes, and

dodging giant poisonous

spiders in the Peruvian

Amazon, I was more

than ready to be headed

back to the beach.

Back to the surf. Back to cervezas, hammocks,

ocean breezes, and motorbiking in bare feet

with nothing to my name but a surfboard.

I had been traveling around the world for

the past 8 months, and my long and tangled

sun-bleached hair and overgrown beard

were testaments to my haggard experience.

Perhaps it was finally time for a shave and

a fresh start. One night in busy San Jose

had proven to be one night too many, and I

longed for sand in-between my toes. The next

morning I was bouncing along on a $5 bus

ride through the hills and towards the coast.

I had a month to play in Costa Rica, and had

kept the itinerary uncomplicated: 1) Surf some

waves, 2) Eat grotesque amounts of pollo,

beans, and rice, 3) Party with the locals, 4)

Rinse and repeat. My first destination was Jaco.

By NEMO TAYLOR

My trusty guidebook advertised this locale

as an upscale beach town with plenty of surf

breaks. When I saw my first sushi joint in 2

months, I knew it was a wise choice. I spent the

days surfing the area’s breaks and drinking

Imperials with the local ex-pats. Each had a

story, and after a couple brews they were more

than happy to share. Somehow the narratives

usually included tales of prison, boat trips,

and various experiences with illicit drugs.

They weren’t a rich bunch, but they were as

colorful as any group of old pirates I’d met.

Being early December, the surf was mediocre

for the most part. While this may have

disappointed some, it was perfect for me. There,

floating in the warm sea water, conscious of

only my surfboard and trunks, I entered into

a meditative state. Most of my time was spent

taking my rented motorbike south to Playa

Hermosa, where the hot, black sand beach

spit fun scattered waves down the coast.

Jaco was not all I imagined though. My rental

car was broken into and I was robbed of my

cash at a local club. Apparently my trusty

guidebook had failed to mention some much-

needed security precautions. After 8 months

of heightened South American caution, the

laid-back Costa Rican scene had my guard

down and the pick-pockets took full advantage.

I left Jaco with higher insurance rates, less

cash, a newfound wariness of Colombian

hookers, and an overall bad taste in my mouth.

I hitched my way up to Tamarindo (Tama-gringo

as its known) and discovered the Costa Rican

town of my dreams. With dusty dirt roads, laid

back atmosphere, and plenty little restaurants

and smiling locals, Taramindo was my new,

Costa Rican home. The town had a grungy,

young surfer vibe, mixed with a bit of nightlife

that was exactly what I was looking for. The

waves were good, and around the corner was

a river mouth that broke over a hollow sandy

bottom that invited you to come out and play.

I soon found my way onto the surf boat of

Big John. He picked me up in his enormous

American-made truck imported solely for the

purpose of navigating the infamous cratered

Costa Rican roads. What followed the bumpy

car ride was a couple days of pure perfection

spent surfing the legendary breaks of Witches

Rock and Ollie’s Point. Ollie’s lived up to its

reputation as a 300 yard surf porn machine.

It barreled along its entire length over a

forgiving sandy bottom—enough to give

any avid surfer wet dreams. Big John caught

some Mahi Mahi and we made quick work of

turning it into delicious, raw sushi. All in all,

not a bad way to pass the time in Costa Rica.

I felt like I could live here forever. During

the course of my travels, I sometimes

come upon towns that feel so much

like home, that I am tempted to linger,

grow roots, and stay permanently.

Each time I come across these

towns, I meet people who

have done just that. They

were drifting, and decided

that perhaps this was the

right spot for them. These

vagabonds, now rooted, I

greeted with a mixture of

jealousy and wistfulness.

Were they really happy?

For me, ultimately I knew

the answer was no. The

travel bug had

bitten me

too strongly.

The siren

song of that

“next great

adventure”

would soon rouse

me out of my nest,

and it would be time to

reluctantly ramble on.
