Presidents Prattling's

On the the 24th May the Annual General Meeting was held at Norton Sportsand Social Club and as the attendance was pretty poor I can only assume thatthe membership is generally satisfied with the decisions and actions of theCommittee , if this assumption is not correct why weren’t you there to haveyour say ?

Ok enough of that , there are a few changes to tell you about , Pete Woodhas had to stand down as our Chairman due to pressure of work and theWoodpecker commitment so we now have a new (younger) chairmanAntony Stoneman has stepped up from Vice Chair to take on the role , goodluck for the future , further to this Geof Wooldridge has been elected as ageneral member , joining Pete Dodschun and Dick Wright. Vacancies left arefairly critical ,Comp Sec ( Andy T has retired) Press Officer ( Richard hasalso retired ) and should YOU reckon you could take on either of thesepositions please contact any of the Committee (details in back of the mag)asap.Remember that Dood has taken on the role of the Championship Coordinatorand MUST have your claims for points to keep the system up to date ,At this juncture I must offer an open apology to Pete Wood ,as the majorityof you are aware I am not the worlds keenest computer buff, and saddledwith the minutes at the AGM at the very last second ( cheers Ant ) I had notthought to open my Es in the hours before there for I had not got theChairman's Report to present to the meeting , It is now attached to theminutes , apologies again Pete , my fault.

Pete has also had to give up the organising of the pending Autosolo , BUTwe are desperately trying to solve this situation as I type this !!!!!!!!!There is one more important item to report and that is my sons wedding( last weekend ) to Nicola , at the brilliant Grafton Manor in Bromsgrove, awonderful day , congratulations Kevin and Nic,Finally Good Luck to the revised Committee , lets move this club everonwards and ever upwards !Martin Membership Reminder

Emcos Stages Rally 28th May 2011

It is rumoured that this may havebeen the last event to use Down Ampney. Two club crews were entered, both in classC. Nigel Hall and Dave Webley werehoping to repeat their success of last time atthe same venue when they came 11th overall. Frank Burton/Simon Geenway were introuble even before the start. Frank hadbeen out in the car, his rear wheel drive MkIII Escort, a few days before the rally whenthe oil pump drive failed. However with thehelp of Nigel they repaired it and put a new set of bearings in the engine and werehoping for a good run. Nigel started well in his Mk II Escort, with a time of 6-19 on the first stage, 3rd

quickest in class and 33 secs fasterthan Frank/Simon. By the end ofstage 2 Nigel/Dave were 4 secs aheadof the eventual class winnersAttwell/Emery in an Astra, and 53 secsup on Frank/Simon. The conditions were a bit slipperyand Nigel had an “off” on stage 4 andcollected a maximum, bending a steer-ing arm in the process. Frank/Simonwere having an equally exciting timebut with no major problems and withone stage to go they were 2-06 aheadof Nigel. At this point Nigel/Davedecided to retire as the steering was

not looking too good. Jeremy Hancock was out marshalling but I guess they didn’t see much of him.ResultsFrank Burton/Simon Greenway Mk III Escort 31st O/A 10th in classNigel Hall/Dave Webley Mk II Escort Retired

Several Club crews have been out scoring points in the StageRally Championship, some with more success than others. Ben Williams broke a rear brake disc on the Plains but managedto finish. This was somewhat better than Paul Davey/Roger Allanwho sheared the central spline on the clutch plate and retired. Paul and Roger had a better run on the Somerset after a fewproblems and finished 9th in class. Their next event is the Dukeries. Ben Williams has been having a few other problems when he hadan argument with a bull on his farm and broke a few ribs which willput him out of action for a few weeks. Hopefully he will be fit todefend his title on Alastair’s Autotest. Don’t forget Alastair’s Autotest on 17th July. Phone Dood on01531 821398 to register your entry.

All three drivers are on their first visitto Barbados. At the sharp end of the field will be Darren Moon in his Ford Escort RS1800 and AlanCourtney in his Tuthill-prepared V8 Porsche 928. Darren has competed at the front ofthe British Historic Rally Championship for many years, with numerous successes andthe Irish Porsche crew bring valuable asphalt experience from the Emerald Isle. Also from UK is Dr Raj Jutley in a Category 3 Ford Escort RS2000. The Jutley/Roubosteam is a truly international pairing: Raj is an Indian from Kenya and Nick is a GreekAustralian. Their Mk1 Escort RS2000 is fitted with a modern 2-litre Zetec engine(allowed under Barbados Historic regulations, as long as it runs carburettors and noengine management). Raj has competed on the Safari Rally and the Middle EasternRally Championship and works as a consultant for the Porsche Human PerformanceCentre at Silverstone, particularly involving cooling and hydration (no better place thanBarbados to practice, then!) and other aspects of driver fitness. For overseas competitors and spectators, the 2011 Barbados Historic Rally Carnivalruns from 14 to 26 July - see the website for full details. For more information, please contact:Website: www.barbadosrallycarnival.comEmail: [email protected]

Dear All, Since the early 1980’s I think we have all hoped that the ‘Wales Rally GB’ would venture backup to the North Wales coast. Known in those days as the infamous ‘Lombard RAC Rally’ theexcitement and thrill of having the cream of International rally drivers on our doorstep wassomething to behold. So following the rumours that circulated earlier this year –it was with great applause that on13th April the organisers confirmed that this year’s rally would start from Llandudno onThursday 10th November, and finish in Cardiff on Sunday 13th November. Though the decision is ultimately made by the organisers - the work to make this happenstarted to develop on 2009’s Cambrian Rally when we were running a week or two before thatyear’s event, and we were able to attract the likes of Mikko Hirvonen; Mads Ostberg + otherInternational stars. Little did we know that ‘people’ were listening to these guys commentsabout how good the stages, and the welcome they received from all they met when they wereup here. This I should point out is also due to the professional & friendly way you conductedyourselves – thank you for all that you did then.A lot of work was also achieved by Alyn Edwards, who is currently part of the team thatsupplies the WRC with the required fuels. During his travels – he along with John H Roberts,[ Dep C of C for 2009 Cambrian ] were able to speak face to face with team leaders etc whilstout on the events.Last year Conwy Council were asked to promote a Rallyfest weekend. This was a great success, and it seems ‘people’ were impressed with what they witnessed. This now brings us to where we are at the moment. Alyn Edwards has been asked to be theRegional Organiser, [ RO ] for Day 1, with myself as Deputy RO ... which we have accepted. Our commitment involves Llandudno town; Great Orme stage, [ of which there are 2 runs ];Conwy town; Service in the Llandudno area & a forest stage in Clocaenog. As a rough outline of the time schedule – first car starts at 14.30 hrs from Llandudno.Clocaenog will be around 16.00 hrs and return to the coast around 18.00 hrs where they willthen go into ‘Parc Ferme’.First car then leaves Llandudno at 06.00hrs on the Friday for the stages in the Dyfi complex. With the above in mind I would be grateful if you can let me know if your club/ group are ableto help out.Once we have had the replies we can then work out with the MSA where we can best utilise thesupport. Although North Wales Car Club will be heavily involved in the overall period, we cannot dothis without your help please. This will be something new for a lot of us, and hopefully betweenus all - we can do this.I look forward to your reply as soon as you are able.Best Regards.Keith Pulling

STYLISH BRITISH ELECTRIC HIGH-PERFORMANCE CARSHIT THE ROAD FOR 12-MONTH TRIAL PROGRAMME

The very best in British designed and engineered electric high-performance cars havetoday begun a 12-month test on the UK's roads. By putting the cars through theirmost stringent challenges yet, the 'real-life' road tests aim to demonstrate the benefitsof electric vehicles and at the same time showcase the UK's manufacturingexcellence in this area.14 EEMS Accelerate vehicles are now on the road - and will be trialled in 'real-world'scenarios for a period of 12 months - as part of the Technology Strategy Board's£25m Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator competition. The test drivers areexpected to use the vehicles for their everyday use in the same road andenvironmental conditions that a regular road car would be used in.The EEMS Accelerate programme, led by energy and climate change consultantsAEA, brings together a consortium of specialist UK manufacturers to design, develop, demonstrate and realise the potential of electric high-performance cars. The cars nowon the roads are the Westfield Sport-E, the Delta E-4 Coupe, Ecotricity's Nemesisand the Electric Lightning GT.The cars' designers have all aimed to push boundaries in research and developmentin batteries, motors and chassis design and media were invited to drive the vehiclesat Goodwood to see how far the manufacturers had succeeded in achieving their goals.Commenting after a successful training and media day, EEMS Accelerateprogramme manager Justin Brock said: "We are proud to be pioneering the future ofUK manufactured electric, high-performance cars, which represent green, sustainable cutting-edge technology. The intelligence gained will be crucial infurther developing the technology and demonstrating its importance to the UK."Data collected by AEA from the EEMS Accelerate programme will be published andused by the Technology Strategy Board to demonstrate the wider benefits of electricvehicles and illustrate the UK as an emerging centre of development andmanufacture, with the potential to generate lasting, high-quality employment. For more information on EEMS Accelerate, please visit www.eemsaccelerate.co.ukEmail: [email protected]: Justin Brock on +44 7968 707393 or Craig Jones on +44 7968 707862.

LEGENDARY PAIRING FOR BARBADOSHISTORIC RALLY CARNIVAL

To win the British Rally Championship in the days when the series represented serious,world-level motor sport was no mean achievement. Winning it no fewer than five timesduring that period makes Scot Jimmy McRae the most successful rally driver in theBritish Isles. On three of those championship wins (in 1981, 1982 and 1987), Jim wasco-driven by slim, straight-talking, northern Englishman Ian Grindrod. Now in his late 50s, McRae's enthusiasm for competing in rallies is undiminished. Heis determined to improve on his second place in last year's inaugural Barbados HistoricRally Carnival - to the extent that he's convinced Grindrod to accompany him on thisyear's Caribbean motorsport spectacular. Convincing Grindrod was, McRae reports, nota difficult task...A wealth of anecdotes surround the talented McRae/Grindrod partnership: things likethe big shunt on an Epynt military range stage during the 1982 Welsh Rally. Theytackled a lefthand bend in their Opel Ascona 400 too fast and the right rear wheel foundthe grass on the outside of the corner. The car was launched into the scenery, rolled intothe ditch, then went end-over-end twice, finishing up sliding along the ditch on its roof.In the process, Grindrod's full-face crash helmet: "Seemed to scoop up half of southWales in its aperture."He adds: "When we finally came to a stop, still upside down, I managed to scramble outof my door and was crawling around on the grass. I could hear Jim shouting to thequickly gathering spectators; 'I've blinded him, I've blinded him!' and to all thosegathered around, that's just what it must have seemed, with me scrabbling about on thegrass with the front of my helmet full of bits of scenery: 'It's OK,' I shouted back. 'I'mlooking for my fags; they must be out here somewhere!' He never forgave me for that."McRae will again be driving a Tuthill Porsche 911 in this year's Historic Rally Carnival,as will company founder Francis Tuthill. Other competitors joining them from the UK,Ireland and Europe will be driving a variety of historic rally machinery.Garage owner Andy Allen first visited Barbados in 2006, with Laurence Gibson and hisrallycross MG Metro 6R4 for the Vaucluse Raceway RallyCross; he's been back sixtimes since. This time, he's bringing his 1984 Group B Audi quattro, to run at the frontof the field as Zero Car.Pip Coulson brings his 1980 Talbot Sunbeam 1600Ti. Put into dry storage 23 years ago(as was Pip's rallying!), with just 14,000 miles then on the clock, the car has done 14rallies in the past two years. Pip was a class winner in the Northern Ireland HistoricChampionship in 2009, and again in 2010.For the first time this year, the Rally Carnival will have a category for pre-1968 cars.Neil Revington from Somerset runs a TR specialist operation [www.revingtontr.com]and is bringing a top-notch TR5. It's done various rallies around Europe and someracing. "My wife Sue is navigating. Many of the regularity rallies I have done over theyears have been with Sue navigating. Sue does not, as she puts it, 'do crash hats', but Iwas not going to be allowed to go to Barbados without her, so now she apparently 'does This article continues near the bottom of page 5
