Alex Herrmann

Director Americas

Welcome. First of all, is the cliché true, are all

Swiss people bankers and do they

own a cuckoo clock?

Alex Herrmann: Switzerland’s economic

success is based on several industries,

with banking and watchmaking being two

of the most important ones. Tourism is the

fourth-most important export industry,

and Swiss hospitality has a long tradition.

However, cuckoo clocks are not Swiss,

they’re originally from the Black Forest.

Evelyn Lafone: That’s right. We do have

banks but the majority of Swiss people

work in a mix of different industries and

services. Switzerland was in fact a farming

country up to the 19th century. This means

that many of our mountain villages are un-

spoiled and original, giving visitors a truely

authentic nature experience.

What are your secret tips to fall

#INLOVEWITHSWITZERLAND along

the Grand Tour of Switzerland?

AH: Here are just three out of a million

ways to fall in love with Switzerland:

discover the Swiss Alps - hike on a

beautiful fall day in the Bernese Ober-

land, or ski on a mild March day with an

extended lunch break above St. Moritz.

explore the Italian-speaking part of Swit-

zerland and enjoy an espresso in a café

on the Piazza Grande in Locarno.

experience the culinary and art scenes

in Zurich and Basel.

EL: Have an open mind. Be prepared to

explore. Take the time to visit old historic

towns. Enjoy day trips to lesser-known ar-

eas. I hail from Winterthur which is only 25

minutes from Zurich. It is a beautiful town

with some world class private art collec-

tions, many bars and two castles, sur-

rounded by vineyards, with restaurants

serving local organic food.

What are the main differences

between Canadian and U.S. travelers,

Evelyn?

EL: Canadian travelers seem to still have a

strong tie to Europe, which also comes

from Canada being a bilingual country.

Canadians also seem fairly resilient when

it comes to domestic and world happen-

ings with travel remaining a big priority for

many.

4. Cities & shoppingEmbedded between nearby Alpine peaks and

and diverse. A wealth of museums, shopping and

entertainment can conveniently be reached within

walking distance.

Why fall #INLOVEWITHSWITZERLAND?

5. Food & wineSwitzerland is not just about cheese & chocolate;

the different regions invite to delve into a culinary

journey, from haute cuisine to local specialties ac-

companied by the finest Swiss wines from across

the country.

6. Culture & traditionsFour official languages and four distinctive cultures

result in an experience unlike anywhere else. Im-

pressive architecture from times of the Romans,

contemporary art and internationally renowned

events round out every trip.

Richard Krieger, President, Isram, EuropeToo

“Don’t judge a book by its cover? In the case of

Switzerland, I was guilty of that. What I thought: Lovely,

quiet, pastoral, finance. What I found: Exciting, thriving,

young, trendy, elegant, world class, and much more. I

fell in love with this amazing country and encourage

you to visit it.

Travel like a local

Mihaela Lala Weaver, Product Manager Europe,

Tauck

“One cannot help but fall in love with Switzerland.

Every corner of the country has something different to

offer such as intact medieval towns, castles, lakes and

waterfalls. But the best kept secret of the Swiss is their

wine, nothing gets exported, everything is consumed

by the locals and the tourists, the savvy ones.

Soft adventure

Andy Levine, President/Founder, DuVine Cycling +

Adventure Co.

“I remember riding my bike on mountain roads past

green fields with cows and hearing the sound of their

bells. I was above the clouds and looked down on

charming villages. Life and beauty do not get better

than that. You know you are at a magical place. That

place is called Switzerland.

Foodies

Reesa Avelino, Product Manager, Air Canada

Vacations

“Indulge in dishes such as ‘fondue’ and ‘raclette’

(slow-cooked melted cheese served with potatoes,

pickles and onions) and you’ll taste the freshness of the

Swiss Alps melting in your mouth! Swiss chocolate is

great on its own, with an espresso, a Cognac or on any

conceivable occasion – it’s a must in Switzerland.

Peter Rahaman, Vice President Sales, Rail

“You will fall in love with Switzerland when you

arrive in Zermatt by the Glacier Express and see

the Matterhorn. Did you know that you have the

opportunity to travel even further up to 10,132 feet

on the world’s first electrified rack railroad, the

Gornergratbahn, for one of the most rewarding

mountain train adventures?

Multi-generational travel

James Shillinglaw, veteran travel journalist and

two-time winner of the American Society of Travel

Agents' travel journalist of the year award

“Switzerland is a great destination for multi-genera-

tional family groups. Each member can engage in a

different form of travel - from active vacations like

skiing and hiking to less strenuous train and gondola

rides, while everyone can enjoy the spectacular Alpine

scenery.

Winter magic

Pete Kovacevic, Director of International Opera-

tions, Alpine Adventures

“Winter vacation in Switzerland... it's like being in a

fairy tale! Why? Superb location in Europe, genuine

hospitality with attention to small details, family-owned

properties with long tradition, unspoiled nature,

endless skiing areas across the country, and high

altitude ski resorts with guaranteed snow.

Christmas Markets

Markus Bill, Part-Owner of Prime Travel

“Switzerland’s very popular Christmas Market season

starts at the end of November and continues until the

end of December. Find original gifts for Christmas and

try the traditional Gluehwein. Basel, Bern and Montreux

Strong Growth in the U.S. and

Urs Eberhard, Executive Vice President, Head of

“From a global perspective, North America is a key

7Interview. Switzerland Yodel.

Interview.

Paul Montgomery,

owner of Skiis and Biikes. What was your first experience of

Switzerland?

My parents took the whole family to Switzerland

when I was 8 and again when I was 10. We rented

a VW Beetle and drove the whole country. It was

magical. When I was 11, I dragged my dad to ski in

Davos. We were not good skiers at all and so we

took lessons in the morning and skied in the high

Alps in the afternoon. Even at 11, I remember the

spectacular beauty and the fantastic food. Being in

another country with a different language and cus-

toms really opened my eyes to how big and diverse

the world is.

You have also introduced your three children

to Switzerland. What are their favorite experi-

ences either in the winter or summer?

All three of my kids went to school for grade 12 in

Neuchâtel, Western Switzerland. I would say that is

their favorite experience as they were privileged

with experiencing the whole country, winter and

summer. They really don't have a winter or summer

favorite. Their favorite experiences seem to be the

hospitality of the local people. They loved them.

How did Skiis and Biikes start out? It seems

the perfect combination of winter and summer

products?

In 1978 while still in school, I decided to open a

small ski store at the Caledon Ski Club so that I

could learn how to operate a business. It grew! I

grew with it and now we have 6 stores in Ontario,

Vancouver and Whistler. We added the bikes in the

'80s as we were all enthusiastic cyclist so it just

made sense.

What hidden gem would you recommend for

the Canadian traveler in Switzerland?

Mürren is my secret favorite. In summer you can

hike the Schilthorn and look at the Jungfrau. In the

winter, the skiing is unparalleled. Mürren is the cut-

est little village hung part way up the mountain on

the edge of a cliff with no cars in town. It is simply

breathtaking.

Skiis & Biikes was started in 1978 in Ontario. It be-

gan as a Pro shop with ski service and rentals,

which has become very popular across Canada.

AGENT TIP:

and learn more about

Switzerland.

How can agents get training on Switzerland? I recommend two easy steps. Start off with our

e-learning to become a certified Switzerland Advisor.

Then, participate in our webinars and pick our

brains. I call them radio shows “live from Switzer-

land”. We show you how to travel like a local, you

get insider tips on the best rooftop bars, places to

dine or where to find the best looking cows.

What else? Join our Goldflower Club Switzerland Tourism on

LinkedIn to get our latest news. Agents and opera-

tors seem to also love our trainings combined with

chocolate tastings or raclette cheese parties.

Why should agents take the e-learning program? Our program shows you how to sell authentic and

convenient experiences in Switzerland. It will boost

your sales, you will get more leads, receive conti-

nuing education units and benefit from additional

sales support. Like in the Coldplay song "A Sky Full

of Stars", we reveal to you a million reasons to fall

#INLOVEWITHSWITZERLAND.

How does Switzerland Tourism support agents? Call or write us when you have a lead. We give you

access to hidden gems. We advise you for free and

send you a video of a region, which you can imme-

diately share to convince your client.

ing visitors with the pristine natural beauty and its sparkling and

where winter sports were invented in 1864, and to this day, nowhere

else are they celebrated in such style. It is no surprise, then, that after

staging four Alpine World Ski Championships and two Winter Olympic

Games (1928 and 1948), St. Moritz will host the Alpine World Ski

Championships in 2017.
