Swing for the thought

“EVERY WORTHWHILE ACCOMPLISHMENT HAS A PRICE TAG TO IT. THE QUESTION IS ALWAYS, WHETHER YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE TO ATTAIN IT – IN HARD WORK, SACRIFICE, PATIENCE, FAITH AND ENDURANCE”.

John C. MaxwellI am honoured and proud to announce that Swingtime Golf

and the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation has consummated the FIRST GOLF T.V. CHAT SHOW in Mauritius, an insightful perspective into the golfing industry and sport, creating a platform for discourse and constructive criticism to take golf in Mauritius to new untold dimensions and promote the country as a whole... refer to page 16-19

Further to the show we have the Adopt a Golfer programme a 5 min retro of golfing tips, for existing golfers and new-comers, for development and preparation of their game.

I extend acknowledgement of gratitude to MBC, Director General of MBC: Mr. Dhanjay Callikan and Head of Sports News: Mr. Jug Gokhool, for your tireless and persistent support, to all the staff of Swingtime Golf, Market Info Direct, and the group’s incoming Sponsors and golf associates; Ruth Linder, Switzerland, Christa Wolf(UK) Skyprops Finance Services LLC, (USA) The Linn Connell Foundation (USA) Jukke Leinonen Claudia Passerini, Finland Mala, Rajah & their son (Rajah Junior) United Kingdom, I appreciate yourlong standing support and friendship.

TIGER, TIGER BURNING BRIGHT… In the Bible parable,“Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone” incident is one of the most well-known lessons.

A woman, who had been caught in the act of adultery, was brought to Jesus Christ by the scribes and Pharisees as a test to see if the Messiah was a liberal in matters of the Law of God. In response to their deceitful query, He did not condemn the woman, not because He was a liberal, nor because He condoned her sin, but because the men who brought the woman to Him were Hypocrites. He was the only person there that day who was free of sin, the only one who had the right to “cast the first stone.” He did not stone her (or her accusers), but instead forgave her and told her to “sin no more.” For the day is coming when, if she did not thereafter repent, would not be stoned, but would burn - along with the hypocrites who brought her to Him that day.

The world’s Golf Megastar Icon, Tiger Woods, is on the mend.

Like the true champion that he is, he will endure all the trials and tribulations that await him!

He surprised the golf world by saying that he was not sure when he would come back to the sport. “I do plan to return to golf one day; I just don’t know when that day will be,”

Indeed, whilst the world looks forward to the day that Tiger returns to the sport of Golf, let us not forget that he would have paid the price to ATTAIN his successes and Blessings.

For the “love of the game”, let us, together, support this true champion in his plight, to recover and to be re-united with his beloved family.

A letter from the Editor

I have been living in “paradise”, Mauritius, to the rest of the world, for just over 4 months now. Thus far it has been an illuminating experience. I have met many interesting people, and seen the most magnifi cent views that nature has to offer. There is no other place on the planet that offers such a plethora of sights, sounds, tastes and thrilling mixof ethnicities. The world of Golf creates the ideal lens with which to view this microcosm, which in turn refl ects the rest of the global village. The sport of golf, as I gain a deeper understanding of its intellectual mechanics, examines the nuts and bolts of striving for the very best. It is a process that beginswithyou, and goes to the heart of your values and ethics. Every action is informed from this foundation. Golf enthusiasts consistently make reference to its all pervasive infl uence on their lives in general. It is not just a sport; it is a way of life, a path that leads to a better you with intrinsic lessons each step of the way.Everyone should be playing golf then! But herein lies the crunch and a rather disturbing dichotomy. In Mauritius, and the rest of the world, golf and all it has to offer is largely within the inaccessible domain of the wealthy. Status quos that encompass race, class and money are duplicitously maintained, fl ying in the face of the real philosophies that golf teaches. The “democratization of golf” is a catchy phrase bandied about, but to what pragmatic ends are they truly realised. Among the most incredible golf courses in Mauritius, there is not one Public Course or Driving range.

So in the spirit of golf, the saying at SWINGTIME, “If one of us can make a difference, imagine what we can do together”, seems more apparent than ever.Have a great round.

During the month of December 2009, Swingtime created the opportunity to send 2 of the participants in the “Adopt-A-Golfer” program to India to observe the workings of the PGTI. There, they also participated in training sessions with Mauritian Golf Pro Billy Narraina and an Indian Professional Golf Coach. This provided invaluable insight for the young golfers into the world of professional golf.

The Swingtime “Adopt-A-Golfer” training program is designed with a multi-disciplinary approach and seeks to provide the participants with a solid foundation that will enhance their golfing careers.

To this end, The 5 minute retro show of Swingtime golf tips will also feature our adopted golfers from time to time. With the advent and demonstrable power of online media, and the international reach of broadcasting programming, the adopted golfers will gain a weighty

perspective into the business and marketing paradigm that serves a loaded platform for sponsorship and sports branding.

The adopted golfers are under constant evaluation and assessment. Their performance therefore carries the element of self-determination and motivation for success in all golfing spheres, as extolled in the ethics of Golf. Hence an appearance in the show will be the direct result of discipline and hard work and will put the international world of golf in direct contact with the adopted golfer’s profiles.

The Swingtime “Adopt-A-Golfer” Program presents a visionary opportunity for corporate responsibility to be associated with a sustainable and measurable development program. INTERVIEW WITH MR Samputh Chari, TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR OF THE FINAL ROUND OF QUALIFYING FOR 2010 PGTI CHALLENGE

A: Mr Charie, thank you from the team of Swingtime Mauritius. As you know, we have come all the way from Mauritius, and it has been a matter of great pleasure and honour for our golfers to take part in the competition and the warm welcome we have received here.

Could you explain how you got involved with the game of golf?

S: It has been a great pleasure having people from various parts of the world to come and play in our golf tour. It is good to know that the PGTI is being spread out. We know that it is a fully growing tour now, and that is why we have welcomed you all who are taking part in this tour.

Being a sportsman before, mainly in cricket, I injured my knee. I couldn’t play cricket after that. Then, a friend of mine who was selling steel would do business on the courses, and it could also be attributed to that amount of business is done on the course, and that’s how I entered the game of golf. I started playing golf, loved golf and now, help run this tournament.

A: What goes on behind the scenes in organising such an event or golfing tournament in an administrative aspect? What are the sorts of problems or difficulties that occur when planning to host a tournaments like this?

Golfer’s paradise •••

S: First and foremost, you need to get a sponsor. In order to host an event, you need sponsors and they are very hard to get, so when you do, you have to please their every need. The next issue is getting a golfing course, and lastly, getting the players involved to play the event. So these are the key issues: the sponsor, the course, and the players. So you have nothing, if you don’t have all these three.

Then, you have to meet your sponsor requirements, your course requirements and your player requirements. As far as players are concerned, we have a team who see to all the rules and regulations. So obviously, you are going to battle with these three particular issues. We have a fully fledged team. A marketing team that organises the events for us, an operations team that puts everything into place, then we have a tournament team, that takes care of the technical parts of an event. The technical part is obviously done via the tournament director, which I happen to be. When we come to the golf course, everything is finalised to what we want. 90% of any success at a golf tournament is due to course marking. That takes care of most of the issues, and the most important part in golf. And all those involved are qualified, and know what they are doing.

A: Regarding the economic crises; quite often corporate houses are cutting down on costs. Did you have any difficulties in getting any procreation from the sponsors in this kind of economic scenario?

S: As I’ve said, we have a marketing team, and they could probably spread more light on the sponsors. However, we do manage quite a few events, so we have not felt it.

A: About the playing standards, the players who are taking part, are you satisfied with the players and those coming from abroad?

S: I am highly confident right now. The authority of golf is improving all the time. We work hard, we get good golf courses and now, we have very good equipment, as far as technology is concerned.

And we are willing to work hard. With all these three foundations put together, it will make for a much better player. People even go abroad to learn.

A: We spoke to Mr Mundy, who said the PGTI is looking forward to make golf more accessible to all classes of people in India.

S: The unfortunate part is that we don’t have very many public golf courses. We would like more public courses to be opened. We have one such golf course in Delhi. The LANSHRAY Golf Club, where anyone can walk into. We need more courses like that, where you can just walk in and play.

A: As an Indian, personally, I would like to see golf as popular and loved as sports such as cricket or football. Is the ministry interested in helping to achieve this?

S: The ministry could help as far as amateur golf is concerned.A: We have our own events in Mauritius, and in May, the Swingtime Corporate golf challenge in Mauritius. You are more than welcome to come and participate, as well as the participation from more Indian golfers in Mauritius. Do you think there would be an interest amongst Indian golfers?S: It depends on what kind of events there are. Thank you for the invitation. In terms of players, golf is growing; people will travel anywhere to play if they have the means.A: Swingtime Magazine has a programme where we help young talented golfers get special training, and travel all over the world. It’s called Adopt-A-Golfer programme. We have two young golfers, who are learning and gaining experience from the pros. What are your thoughts, on helping junior golfers?S: It is a great idea in a budding golfing career. Teaching them what to do, what is expected of them.A: We would like an exchange programme, where Indian players could come to Mauritius. Would the PGTI encourage such a venture?S: It is very encouraging. I’m sure you will get a lot of responses from them

Golf TOURS IN INDIAUDAY TOURS AND TRAVEL is a golf tour specialist’s travel agency. In India you can play golf almost anywhere and this outdoors sport is widely played by a cross-section of people set

in the country's often-dramatic background. In the hills and high Himalayan vastness, in metropolitan cities and in small towns, by lakes and forests, or surrounded by tea estates, out in the desert and in old British cantonments... the flavor of India is visible everywhere that golf in the country is played.

Dramatic venues in India offering golf are truly memorable experiences. Tee off from the highest golf course in the world, watch a peacock dance amidst old monuments strewn in the middle of the course or sip a cup of tea at a colonial styled clubhouse.

Golf in India has a very rich heritage as it was the first country outside of Great Britain to take up the game of golf. The Royal Calcutta Golf Club, established in 1829, is the oldest golf club in India, and the first outside of Great Britain. With the growing influence of the British in the Indian empire, the eighteenth century saw a mushrooming of new golf clubs. Wherever land was available and grass grew, golf found a new HOME.

At Uday Tours, holidaying is just not about hopping from place to place, and for that matter Golf is just not about hitting a ball. Holidaying and golf- play is all about a complete relaxation of the mind and body which leads to rejuvenation. In this pursuit, Uday Tours have designed a Golf vacation that is a lifetime experience with the help of their trained golf and yoga teachers.

Yoga and golf you ask? Consider though how many times you have begun the golf season with very high scores, short drives and plenty of aches and pains with the addition of a frustrating lack of concentration? If this happens more than you would like, why not do something different? Stretch Your Way To Better Golf!

Flexibility, strength, balance, core conditioning and endurance are the physical components required to achieve peak golf performance. Concentration, state of well-being, balance, ease and vibrant alertness is the mind connection, and to this end "Yoga for Golf". Uday Tours and Travel can arrange training programs for yoga and meditation techniques designed to benefit all levels of your golf game.

CORPORATE GOLFCorporate Golf has become an intrinsic part of the business landscape. Uday Tours acknowledges that more and more

business deals are concluded on the golf course than in the board room. There is no better way of building sound and lasting business relationships than through the game of golf. Hence Uday Tours also specializes in the organizing, planning, managing and promoting of corporate golf events.

Experiencing Golf Courses in IndiaGolf was already played in India for 65 years before the first major course was opened in the USA in 1888. Today, a large

number of international- standard courses designed by big guns such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trend Jones Jr. and Greg Norman have been established in India, providing golfers with ample challenges. In addition there are many new courses opening in 2011 designed by well known players liked Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, and Graham Cooke.

India became part of the international golfing circuit in 1964 with the launch of the Indian Open. Today, golfing in India has indeed come a long way with a large number of Indian players competing and winning on the international circuit. Golf enthusiasts including women, continue to grow in numbers, and new courses are added almost every year. The Indian PGTI is increasing the amount of money every year with the great support of corporate sponsors and their interested parties.

India has also hosted many European and Asian tour events such as the Johnny Walker Classic (USD 10 million), Emmar MGF (USD 10 million), Indian Open (USD5 Million) and Sail (USD5 Million)

Golf Courses: Some of the well known Championship and Scenic golf courses in India are: Royal Spring Golf Course - The course with Dal Lake and pine dotted mountain is no doubt one of the most

beautiful golf courses in Asia. Gulmarg Golf Course: Is situated at an altitude of 2650 meters. Highest green golf course in the world. Jaypee Greens: A Greg Norman design championship course. The course measures 7350 yards. Golf course

A garden not without its thorns. By Robert Greeff

Mauritius is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It is a visual festival of spectacular scenery that stops you dead in your tracks. Indian Ocean. Sunsets here are vistas painted in the depths of your soul. And golf? You might ask. The answer is simple. Mauritius dishes up a banquet for the golfer of every persuasion and level seeking a challenge, relaxation and entertainment.

Page 33: Swingtime Mauritius 9th issue

•••State of Golf

For the Golfer, Mauritius caters in numerous and wonderful ways that surprise and delight. It has many courses designed by the highest echelons in the golfing world and are integrated with the most magnificent surroundings. I have stood on golf courses here overlooking the ocean. I have seen fairways that rivalled the most picturesque gardens. I have watched golfers tee off into striking horizons. The golfing experience here immerses one in the understanding that playing golf in this milieu is special, enhanced by the sweet meditation of paradise. It is the perfect place to consider the philosophies that golf extols.

Tourism, one of the powerful thrusts of the Mauritian economy, and golf, seemingly go hand in hand. Mauritius increasingly draws international golf champions and assimilating the added value of “business and golf”, increased investment. For all purposes, Mauritius appears poised to take its place on the world stage of International golf. And this has raised some questions and observations.

Can Mauritius host a full blown golf tournament akin to the PGA? At a surface glance, the prevailing opinion is obvious. Yes it can. There have been many tournaments of international calibre hosted at various golf clubs to reasonable success. As far as infrastructure goes, there are beautiful courses. But after noting how 2 international tournaments took place over the same period of time at different golf courses,

I have to consider the vacuum of co-operation that exists within the golfing fraternity here. Granted, Mauritius is a small island and it is becoming more and more apparent that rather cynically, the powers that be are very much concerned with meeting the bottom line. More feet on their own courses equal more revenue for them. Due to the global crisis, the golf pie has become exceedingly smaller. It’s an everyman for himself and golf for us all approach. Intellectually, this sentiment is in stark contrast to what golf teaches. “ To Share”.

Does the sport of golf have the support of the local population? After canvassing the viewpoints of local Mauritians I garnered some very revealing responses. Many believed rather firmly, that golf is for the rich and for tourists and even though they acknowledged that golf played a considerable role in tourism for Mauritius, it remained out of the reach of the average Mauritian. So even if they were interested, there was no place for them to play. Mauritius has no public driving range or public golf course. Mauritians by their nature are very interested in sports. Football and horse racing is a national pastime. Given this predilection, I suspect that if the necessary were done to facilitate the access of the everyday man or woman, they would take to it rather easily. Is this a presumptuous assumption? Taking into account that caddies at golf courses are predominantly Mauritian, with many displaying a natural flair and aptitude for the sport, I would not think so. In fact, quite a few Mauritian Golf Pros began as caddies. I can only shudder to think of the astonishing potential talent going to waste in the absence of training schools, public courses and driving ranges. The next Tiger Woods does not even realise that he is, and more than likely will never reach his potential if government and the golfing fraternity fail to endeavour to recognise and do something practical about the matter. With golf elevated to a competitive sport in the Olympics is Mauritius even interested in developing a team?

Is there a decisive leadership within golf in Mauritius? Is the sport on a path that will seize opportunities being presented? Is there a conducive sense of solidarity and sincere support for those who wish to see golf democratized and opened up? Or will we continue to see a linear approach that can hamper something truly unique reaching untold heights? I can only remain optimistic and positive. This is paradise after all.

Golfer’s paradise••• Perspective•••

The launching in February last, of huge airport infrastructural works with the construction of a new and modern terminal by 2013 goes in line with the country’s commitment to play a leading role within the region. More than anything else, an airport is a key component to showcase a country’s economic achievement.

The existing terminal at SSR International Airport has made its time after more than 10 years. It has fulfilled its mission as targeted in the Master plan worked out by British Airport Authority in the 90’s.

Today, airport facilities are under pressure with a booming tourism

industry and a highly developed export-oriented sector.

Conscious of this challenge, Airports of Mauritius, a public company incorporated in 1988 and owner and operator of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, has embarked on this important development project aimed at responding to government’s aspirations of welcoming 2 million tourists by 2015. Similarly, it will help in playing a strategic role in the economic development of the country as the airport is the only gateway for air access.

AML Ltd, headed by Mr. Serge Petit who has been exposed to airport management in Canada, has teamed up with Aéroport de Paris to undertake this airport development to the tune of 10 billion rupees financed by Exim Bank of China through a loan with preferential interest rate.

Airports Operations Ltd( ATO), chaired by Rajiv Servansingh, current Chairman of Competition Commission and ex-Manager of Board of Investments office in Mumbai, has been set up to supervise construction works .

ATOL is owned by AML which holds 90% of the capital, with ADP Management holding the rest.

AML relies on this new strategic partnership with ADP to see to it that the new terminal becomes a reality within the next three years.

The design of the building has been worked out by ADP and it focuses

on delivering improved user experience. The new terminal will run a surface area of

57,000 square meters which is five times bigger that the area of Swami Vivekananda. An area of 2200 meters will cater for commercial activities with 52 check-in points.

Louis Berger International has been chosen to monitor the works and to see to it that it is being completed within a time schedule.

This new terminal building is being constructed by China State Construction Engineering. It will certainly position SSR Airport as a five-star one within the region and help by capturing more air traffic.

AML is not limiting itself to the construction of this new terminal building. In fact, it is working in close collaboration with different airport and off-airport operators to ensure a coherent and harmonized development of the airport.

Other projects in the pipeline include the construction of a second runaway, the extension of existing taxiway, the existing taxiways on the airside, as well as additional parking facilities on the landslide for airport users. Specific zones within the airport have also been identified for cargo and Freeport authorities as well as for the development of other commercial opportunities such as an integrated airport city.

t was a late Th ursday afternoon, when I entered the gates of the Constance Le Prince Maurice, and was greeted by a sign which read: “Here the birds slow down, why don’t you?” A Zen-like invitation to relax was my thought. Th e arms of serenity embrace you with one’s fi rst step into this 5-star hotel. I am led to a chaise longue in front of an infi nity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. An ice-cold vanilla tea quenches my thirst. It takes but a moment to realise the absence of the noise that surrounds one’s everyday existence. Th ere is only the ambient melody created by the running water of fountains and the hush of the sea lapping at the shore. Everywhere, the eye falls only on peacefulness, and tranquillity ensues. Cool marble in pale sandy shades, warm wooden slattern decks and the décor; a knowing glance to spices like nutmeg, saff ron, cinnamon and paprika subtlety hints at the exotic. Here indoors translates seamlessly to outdoors. In fact, the mood of the structural elements is of openness. Th is hotel exhales… and I do too.

I am told that the Constance Le Prince Maurice pays tribute and homage to the Dutch Prince Maurice Van Nassau, who blazed open the spice route and promoted the trade of “divine essences”. Th e hotel is nestled within a location of exceptional scenic beauty, a natural paradise bathed in a unique atmosphere of serenity and well-being. With that to consider, I am shown to my room.

A unique experience by Robert Greeff

My room is a haven. Th e décor is a harmonious intersection of the beauty of the environment and the intention to unwind and relax. Over-sized wooden furniture beckons to be reclined in. Th e use of wood, stone and thatch lends the room a natural and exclusive charm, and becomes a womb of refi ned and easy-going elegance. Th e necessary, i.e air-condition, hair dryer, mini bar, satellite television, CD/DVD players, telephone-answering machine, wireless internet access (wifi ), a choice of pillows on arrival and individual safes are all evident. Transition from a huge and comfortable bed (to dreamily fl oat away on) to the indoor seating area to the balcony with divan, is an exercise in ultimate relaxation. Again, the colours echo the spice-route theme in a calm fashion, with the space seeking to be a balm for the soul. Th e hotel includes 76 junior suites, 12 senior suites and 1 Princely suite. Apart from relaxing by the gorgeous beach, or spending the day pool-side, should you muster up the energy, some of the free activities include golf, windsurfi ng, snorkelling, glass boat excursions, waterskiing and kayaking. Other paying activities include scuba diving, deep sea fi shing cruises and spa and beauty treatments.

Constance le Prince Maurice off ers a sumptuous range of Mauritian-infl uenced and international cuisine. My meal at the Le Barachois (one of 3 restaurants) was something unusual.

I

Le Barachois has the fame of being the only fl oating restaurant on the island of Mauritius. Its entrance is via a snaking gangplank through mangrove trees. You go on a voyage of discovery in more ways than one. Th e restaurant is situated on the lagoon. Table seating is on fl oating decks. In the distance the ocean whispers salty secrets. Th ere is a gentle sway, lulling you into a culinary fantasy, as you embark on an expedition with fl avours as your guide.

I chanced on the black pepper sarakwa and red tuna tartar on a bed of mango and cucumber as a starter. It was akin to diving into the Indian Ocean on a hot day. A textured, exotic and refreshing dish, with fl avours that lingered and beguiled. My main course was duck fi llet with star anise. A memorable and magical dish that captivated with a complicated dance of spices. Dessert was served by the chef. My selection included a pistachio and coconut tartlet with fresh cherry and a chocolate cup fi lled with dark chocolate mousse and drizzled with dark chocolate sauce, an entrancing fi nish to a mesmerising meal. Th e venue creates a languid and intimate ambience. It is suff used with a soft honey light that dances on the water around it. Th e service was superb with waitrons attentive, knowledgeable and polite.

Service at the Le Prince Maurice completely exceeded my expectations. It is a co-ordinated eff ort and something to behold. Th e staff appears to operate on a 6th sense, virtually intuiting your needs and desires before you are even aware of them. Everyone employs an all encompassing attention to detail and acute observation. One’s preference for salted or unsalted butter is taken note of, preferred drinks are remembered, your sunglasses are cleaned by the pool side, you always return to a topped up glass of water, napkins are folded upon return to a dinner table, all staff greet you by your name when they pass you, in short, no eff ort is spared to make you feel like a valued guest.

I spoke to Ms. Dalida Noellis, Th e Assistant Manager over a pre-dinner aperitif and enquired about the service levels of the staff . She indicated that many had come from hotel schools and go through a training regime at the Constance Hotel Training Program. To create a space of defi nitive relaxation for the guest, service in all aspects is discreet and omnipresent. Together with the stylised Indonesian design, the location by the beach and amazing food, the hotel crafts a sublime experience for the senses. “We strive for perfection in service excellence here at Le Prince Maurice”, said General Manager Christophe Plantier. “Our guests are used to the best and we endeavour to deliver that and more. Guests leave this hotel with memories unique and unsurpassed.”

Ladies Golf: “Flowers on the Golf Course”

The world of golf is an entity that encompasses a varied spectrum, spanning through gender and age. Ladies golf occupies a very special niche with an approach to the sport that is intrinsically unique. I spent the day with the Lady Golfers of the Ladies Golf Club; organised under the auspices of the Mauritian Golf Federation at the Gymkhana Golf Club.

I met with Mrs. Kamla Beeharry, the Ladies Golf Captain for the year, who provided me with some insight into the Ladies Golf Club as we walked the 18-hole golf course over a very spirited game. Mrs. Beeharry organises a weekly gathering for the ladies very Tuesday, with them having priority on the course.

The group has become very popular as some lady golfers are not comfortable in playing the tournaments usually held over the weekend. In fact, there very often are more lady golfers participating on the Tuesday session than other competitions.

The group is usually composed of between 14 to 28 ladies of varying levels and handicaps. The main objective is to provide a space where women are at ease to enjoy golf together. The Tuesday mornings work well in accommodating many of the ladies other commitments.

Golfer’s paradise •••Ladies Golf •••The fun quotient is high with

the feature of a “Ball Sweep”. Each lady brings a new ball, which is shared with the 1st 3 winners. The remaining 2 sets go into a lucky draw.

Once a month, a competition for the ladies club is sponsored by a company, with prizes and drinks and snacks. Which I am lead to believe the ladies rather relish and generates a lot of excitement.

After a round of golf, the ladies meet for a meal at the clubhouse and this promotes a strong social aspect to the game with the space to share ideas and the occurrences of everyday life. Many of the ladies are avid golfers and enjoy spending their time with each other. This was very evident when an unexpected tropical down pour had the ladies undeterred from them getting the most out of their game of golf. They played on steadfastly in good cheer through the rain, a clear indicator of their commitment and enthusiasm.

The only criterion to join the group is that you have a handicap. But it is to be noted that tolerance and acceptance of all levels of play is in effect. Ladies from other golf clubs are regularly invited to play which keeps it fun and adds spice. The ladies visit other golf courses around the island enhancing appeal.

Ladies golf clubs like these enhance the character of golf in Mauritius. According to Mrs. Beharry,”Golf is beautiful, every lady should play!”

Ruth Linder •••

Page 46: Swingtime Mauritius 9th issue

R G : What singular characteristic has contributed to your success in the fi eld of Asset Management?

R L : Without a doubt it is passion. I am very passionate about the work that I do. When you get excited each morning about what you do, you automatically strive for the best. This drives you to constantly endeavour for perfection. Challenges and obstacles that you encounter are dealt with expedience, and with a view that they serve as a learning process, and that the knowledge and experience generated is benefi cial. In so doing, my clients can clearly see the passion for the work and service I deliver.

R G : I am sure that with the zeal and enthusiasm with which you approach your profession, it must contribute to a certain level of trust that your clients impart.

R L : Indeed. The “trust” relationship between asset manager and client is of the highest degree. You have to be beyond reproach. In my own personal capacity I have worked very hard to establish and maintain the element of trust within my working relationships. You get to know your clients very well. In a sense you take care of their well being and ensure the legacy of their hard work, achievement and heritage. Taking care of their wealth often blurs into taking care of them. I have had certain clients who trust me implicitly, so much so that I have arranged funerals for their loved ones. When one works so closely with clients in the spirit of trust, over the years they become your friends. Many dear friendships have begun as clients.

R G : In the light of the recent global economic crisis, Asset management has become vital.

R L : Absolutely. In a way we see into the future and minimize risk. Of course nothing is completely predictable, but through careful risk analysis and risk management we plot a path to ensure success. The main focus of this process should be the result of customer satisfaction. To achieve this one must be knowledgeable about all aspects that may be required by the client. That, and also be sensitive and attuned to the client’s needs.

R G : How long have you being playing golf?

R L : I began playing golf about 6 years ago. I went to Spain with a friend: Mrs. Christa Wolf, a client of over 10 years, and she played. During my stay there I walked an 18-hole course. It was a unique experience. Golf on a course is so different to what you see on television. When I returned home, I contacted a Golf Pro and took lessons. The wonderful thing about golf is that there is so much to learn and know, particularly about yourself. It’s a process. You have to be patient. And that is the greatest aspect that golf delivers on a personal level: an intrinsic view on the value of patience, courage and calculated risk.

R G : What do you enjoy about golf the most?

R L : Well, there is the social aspect. What better way to be networking while doing it outdoors? I also enjoy the fact that golf challenges me. It’s about striving for the perfect shot. And like my work, it has to be imbued with passion. Each game of golf is never the same. There are days when you play fantastic and everything comes together. Then there are days when nothing seems to go right. But, there is always an opportunity to do better and learn more. I also enjoy the feature of camaraderie and competition, especially when playing with gentleman golfers. And of course it keeps me fi t and toned.R G : What are your thoughts on Swingtime: The Business of Golf and the Swingtime Adopt-A-Golfer initiative?

R L : It is a fantastic medium of presenting the multiple aspects of golf in Mauritius to the rest of the world. The places covered with regards to the hospitality industry are of great interest and together with the variety of profi les included on business related personalities generates added value to business leaders who are also golfers. The Adopt-A-Golfer program is a wonderful expression of corporate responsibility identifying and developing the natural golfi ng talent of youngsters who don’t have access to sponsorship. In so doing the development of their careers progress much faster with all the necessary support.

R G : And now for the million dollar question. When will we be seeing you again in Mauritius?

R L : I look very much forward to returning to Mauritius to participate in the 2nd Swingtime Corporate Challenge in May this year. It is the ideal event for business leaders to come together via the sport of golf.

R G : Was gefällt Ihnen beim Golfen am besten?

Business on the golf courseDon’t you worry, I have no intention to bore you with the odd etiquette of golf, although some of you may think it would not be such a bad thing to remember the good manners we all expect on the course.

No, since we are dedicated to the business of golf, let me give you a quick road map to successful business on the fairways and in the roughs.

Apart from continental Europe, where people still tend to over evaluate the sporty side of the game, golf is the ideal platform for business and partnerships. Chief executive offi cers, managers and all those wishing to be called so one given day, know that sharing the common frustration with their game promotes the ideal environment for business talk.

Remember the 2 golden rules :

First: If you can’t shoot under a 100 gross, take some lessons with your local Pro fi rst and improve your game. Of course, this recommendation does not apply if YOU are the CEO.

Second : If you are trying to land a large account with a potential business associate, there is no need to laugh on your possible customer’s sliced tee-shot landing out of bounds.

Let’s get serious… even if you play with someone who is head and shoulders above you, do not let him (or her) win, just because you want to gain the business. Play golf in a relaxed manner and gain that prospect’s respect.

Anyway, taking business on the golf course is for sure the best business decision of your life.

Enjoy the game,

Dieter

Bonne partie,

DieterDieter Praun is a renowned fully qualifi ed PGA Pofessional and golf expert in the german spoken countries, having translated over 15 golf best-sellers and entertaining the golfi ng crowds as the leading golf commentator for Eurosport and NBC-Television for nearly two decades. Golfer’s paradise••• LABOURDONNAIS Hotel•••

Fine dining at the LabourdonnaisLife in the 21st century is a maelstrom of never-ending tasks and deadlines, so much so

that that the preparation of food has been crunched down into 10 minutes by celebrity chefs. Does this state of affairs herald the death knoll of fine dining and haute cuisine? The answer unfurled at a dinner party hosted by Labourdonnais Hotel General Manager Rolph Schmidt.

Fine dining as a concept illicits visions of crisp white table cloths and exceptional standards in china, glass ware and silver ware. It can however be distilled down to 3 main aspects namely: the menu, service and atmosphere. These elements however cannot reach their heights unless contained in an elegant space. The venue in question was room 516; a Presidential suite. It is a spacious and luxurious environment, tastefully decorated in pale gold’s with the lightest touches of amber. Rich textures added warmth and a sense of comfortable sophistication. The room glowed with a mellifluous light with pockets of gentle illumination creating a soulful mood, and looked out onto the Caudan waterfront, a kaleidoscope of colour at night. The stage in many respects had been set.

Rolph Schmidt is an astute man, with an impeccable attention to detail. His guest list including an amiable blend of individuals from Mr. Alan Duval (CEO of Market Info Direct), Mr. V.T Rajah (Global Board Chairman of MINT), his wife Mrs. Marla Rajah, Mr. Mondher Ouerfelli (CEO of Mondolife), Ms. Ruth Linder (Asset Manager from Zurich), Ms. Pamela Patten (Television Producer) and myself Rob Greeff (Media Manager M.I.D and Editor Swingtime Magazine).

It is not needful to feature a lengthy menu, but haute cuisine requires that it should be unique. Gastronomic joy can easily be fashioned in the confident and creative hands of a chef wielding seasonal ingredients when designing dishes. Of course a wine list should have but one goal: to have each wine engage in an intimate and symbiotic relationship with each individual dish.

This particular menu read like a sacred text hinting at culinary enlightenment. The wine list enticed with Louis Roderer Brut (a firm favourite of Mr. Schmidt), Tariquet ‘Petit Manseng’ and Plaisir de Merle Sauvignon Blanc. The courses seduced with Caviar d’aubergine a’ Lacetra effuellee de Chantilly au balsamique blanche; Poelle de foie gras à la mangue “Baissac”; Langoste juste rotie, plamiste braise’ et sa sauce aux crustaces rehaussee au porto and followed with moelleeux de chocolate manjari et sa glace au macadamia. A supernova of flavours and textures that enchanted and elevated the dining experience to something transcendent. The exquisite craftsmanship was an epicurean epiphany that engaged the senses with adept skill akin to the culinary divine.

Wine and dishes were served by gentleman in immaculate black suits. They were attentive, unobtrusive and moved smoothly through the courses, indicative of professionalism and service levels at the Labourdonnais.

Our host, a font of sophistication, was dexterous in humour and conversation. Many words of appreciation and thanks by all followed.

After a dining experience that can only be described as beautiful and sumptuous, it was clear to me that haute cuisine and fine dining at the Labourdonnais is alive and flourishing under the watchful eye of Mr. Rolph Schmidt.

It is a moment in life that we should all partake in at least once. It is true that food is necessary to sustain our existence, but like art it can take one on a journey that will touch your heart and leave you forever changed. We define our passing through life with our senses. To taste something exquisite is to truly live!

Golfer’s paradise•••Prevalent conditions reported by golfers are:Plantor fascitius, commonly called heel pain. This habitually results due to “excessive pronation” (also referred to as hyper-pronation, lowered arches of flat feet), and describes a foot which pronates too much, for too long and at the wrong time during the gait cycle. Normal pronationmovements absorb theimpact of walking or running and disperse the impact a foot makes by stretching and flattening the arch as the foot rolls inward. Golfers with excessive pronation hence very often, report pain located in the centre of the feet. Metatarsalgia, a pain in the fore foot region often caused by corns or hard skin.Morton’s neuroma, an inflammation of the nerve in between the metatarsals (the bones at the sole of the foot), often causing severe pain for golfers who walk the fairway.Tendonitis, an inflammation of the tendon that runs along the arch region. This is a very common injury to golfers as the foot is placed under intense pressure during the swing.

Health and fitness

practitioners recommend

orthortic inserts (insoles),

to alleviate associated

pain in the feet

experienced by golfers.

These orthortic inserts

are placed inside the

shoe to provide stability

and arch support. They

are available over the

counter; which assist in

reducing minor discomfort,

or can be custom made; which

ensure controlled foot motion,

redistributes weight evenly

across the foot and

accommodates pain or

impairment. They further

go on to correct body posture

during the golf swing.

The Journal of Manipulative

and Physiological

Therapeutics indicates

usage by golfers improved

balance, allowed the ball to

be hit harder and on average

a achieved a lower score.

Of course, the importance

of shoes cannot be discounted.

The value of a good fit, traction

and stability should always

be kept in mind.

Veranda Group, hotel cluster of Rogers Group, has just launched “ Heritage Resorts”a new corporate identity for two hotels in Bel Ombre, namely Le Telfair and l’Heritage, two leading hotels. The two 5-star hotels propose two different exotic experiences: Heritage Awali invites tourists to evade into the glimpse and taste of Africa whilst Heritage le Telfair is inspired with a softened lifestyle of the past. These two resort hotels are located in the tourist zone of Bel Ombre where Rogers Group has already invested 8 billion rupees since the last six years. Rogers Group’s CEO, Philippe Espitalier-Noël says that such an investment is the biggest ever undertaken by a single private sector operation for the last ten years.

Bangkok, February 4: Thailand’s rising star Kiradech Aphibarnrat battled to a four-under-par 68 to share the first round lead with American Jason Knutzon and Brazilian newcomer Lucas Lee at the season-opening Asian Tour International on Thursday.

The 20-year-old Kiradech, a former world junior champion, rolled in five birdies at the Suwan Golf and Country Club to join Knutzon, who played despite being ill, and Lee atop the leaderboard at the US$300,000 event.

Filipino Mars Pucay shot the season’s first hole in one en route to a 69 to trail in tied fourth place with Singaporean duo Quincy Quek and Lam Chih Bing, Sweden’s Richard Karlberg, Korea’s Kim Dae-hyun, Australian Rohan Blizard, Thailand’s 14-year-old amateur Atiwit Janewattananond and Hideto Tanihara, an eight-time winner in Japan.

Entering the week, the burly Kiradech declared his intention of breaking through for a first title in Asia and a round helped greatly by his big-hitting game pushed him to the forefront.

“I’m very happy. I hit many wedges into the greens and got four birdies from close range. This is my chance to win. I’ll try to keep it up as it’s my goal to win on the Asian Tour,” said Kiradech, who finished 30th on the Order of Merit in his rookie season last year.

“I drove the ball well and my putting was really good. It’s a tough course. The pins were tucked and the greens are really firm and fast. I had to stay patient out there. It’s a very good first round,” added the Thai, who dropped a lone bogey on the 18th hole, his ninth of the day.

Knutzon rose from his sick bed to set the morning pace. The two-time Asian Tour winner has been down with fever for the past two days but he lived up to the adage ‘Beware the sick golfer’ by firing five birdies against a lone bogey.

KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT

Kiradech is one of the most exciting young players to emerge from Thailand. After a strong amateur career where he won the World Junior Championship twice, he has stamped his class in the play-for-pay ranks. He almost secured his career breakthrough on the Asian Tour in 2009 at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters. The talented Thai led into the final round but had to settle for second place after being caught by Rick Kulacz who shot a closing 63 to win by one shot. He also finished tied fifth in the Iskandar Johor Open and seventh in the Queen’s Cup to finish 30th on the Order of Merit. He earned his card from Qualifying School with a top-10 finish. He also finished runner-up in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games and 2007 Putra Cup. Nicknamed Asia’s John Daly due to his grip it-and-rip it attacking style of play and hefty physique.

“It’s pretty amazing when you have something else to think about,” said a weary Knutzon. “Luckily it was pretty cool this morning which helped but I was kind of gassing it in the last few holes. Anytime you shoot under par, it should make you feel a bit better.”

Lee, who is of Korean origin, made the most of his Asian Tour debut by tying for the lead late in the day, thanks to a birdie at his last hole. “I hit a lot of greens and made the putts I needed to make today. I wasn’t hitting a lot of fairways,” said the 22-year-old,

who graduated from Qualifying School last month.

It was truly an exhilarating start to the new season, thanks to Pucay’s magical ace at the third hole which came on the back of an eagle as he recovered from an outward 38 to end the day just one off the pace.

“I turned in two over and hit a great five wood to three feet for eagle on the par five second hole. Then I stepped onto the next tee and made a hole in one,” said Pucay. “This ace is my gift for my wife (Leslie) as it’s our 15th wedding anniversary today.”

After 15 years on Tour, Pucay is desperate for a first title. “Hopefully this year, it’ll be time for me to win. I’m going to play more aggressively, especially with my putting. I’ll charge a bit more when I’m in position to win,” he said.

The highly-rated Quek, who earned his card from Qualifying School, was delighted to start strongly where he finished his round in style with a 20-foot birdie conversion. “My putting helped. I drained quite a few longs ones. I was hitting it alright and kept it in play.

When I had opportunities, I made them which was nice,” said the 22-year-old.

Defending champion James Kamte of South Africa, whose clubs arrived on Wednesday night, was four under through 10 holes but stumbled home with five bogeys to settle for a 73.

MYANMAR OPEN MAKES A RETURN TO ASIAN TOUR SCHEDULE Yangon, February 2: The Myanmar Open will make a welcome return onto the Asian Tour Schedule after a four-

year lapse following an agreement between Air Bagan and the Asian Tour to revive the popular championship. Due to the tremendous success of last week’s Air Bagan Myanmar Masters presented by IBTC, which marked

the historic launch of the inaugural Asian Development Tour, Air Bagan has decided to extend its commitment to the game by title sponsoring the Myanmar Open.

The Air Bagan Myanmar Open presented by IBTC will be held from April 8-11 at the Pun Hlaing Golf Club,

which was also the venue of the Myanmar Masters, and offer a total prize fund of US$300,000. Myanmar’s national championship was last played in 2005 when Australian Scott Strange defeated Thailand’s

Thongchai Jaidee for the title. Officials believe the Air Bagan Myanmar Open presented by IBTC will provide a further boost to the professional golf landscape and sports tourism in the country.

Tay Za, Chairman of Air Bagan and President of Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar PGA, said the growth

and promotion of Myanmar as a tourist and golfing destination will be enhanced with the timely return of the Myanmar Open.

“Through our title sponsorship of the Air Bagan Myanmar Open, we are confident of attracting more visitors to

our peaceful and beautiful country. Besides entertaining fans with four days of world-class golf action, visitors will also enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the Myanmar people,” said Za.

Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han was delighted that the Myanmar Open would feature prominently

once more on the Asian Tour Schedule, where the new season kicks off this week with the Asian Tour International in Bangkok.

“We are thrilled to welcome back the Myanmar Open. This is made possible with the strong support of our loyal

partners and sponsors who are committed to professional golf in Myanmar,” said Han. “On behalf of our talented players, I would like to express our fullest appreciation to Air Bagan and IBTC for

their wonderful support and initiative to revive the Open. After their involvement with our first Asian Development Tour event last week, we are honoured that both organizations have now extended their support by helping to revive the Myanmar Open.

“As a player-led organization, the Asian Tour will continue to grow the game across the region and create

playing opportunities for our talented members,” added Han. Zaw Moe, one of Myanmar’s finest golf exports, said the return of the national championship would contribute

greatly towards improving the standard of golf in Myanmar. He is also looking forward to competing against Asia’s best players in his home country again. “It’s always

special to play in front of your home fans. I’m looking forward to it and I will be ready to give my best,” said Moe, winner of the Singapore Open in 1997.

The Myanmar Open was inaugurated in 1996 and the list of champions includes illustrious names such as

three-time Asian Tour number one Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, countryman Boonchu Ruangkit, American Anthony Kang, South African James Kingston and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Keng-chi.

India holds the proud record of having produced the most number of Asian Tour Order of Merit champions, through Singh in 2006 and 2008, Atwal in 2004 and Jyoti Randhawa, the country’s first Asian number one in 2002.

In between those proud moments for Indian golf, others have launched their careers by securing the big ‘W’ next to their names.

Gaurav Ghei, Feroz Ali, Shiv Kapur, S.S.P. Chowrasia, C. Muniyappa and Bhullar have all added their names onto the Asian Tour’s Roll of Honour with life-changing victories.

With new tournaments emerging on the Asian Tour Schedule including next week’s US$2.1 million Avantha Masters, the future looks bright for India.

Singh, who holds six wins in Asia and is now an honorary member of the Asian Tour, credited the Tour for giving him the platform to launch his career which has seen him secure multiple titles in Europe and Japan as well.

“This is where I started from and I will never forget that,” said Singh. “I will always go back and support the Asian Tour. The way the Asian Tour has grown is fantastic to see. I feel and strongly believe that the Asian Tour will continue to grow and produce top-class players.”

Atwal, who has won seven times on the Asian Tour, said the region’s circuit, which has travelled to 19 different countries over the years, helped shape his growing years as a professional.

“My first Q-school was in 1995 and just to learn how to make cuts and be in contention and finally win, all those I learnt on the Asian Tour,” said Atwal. “Those were the best years of my life. I still say it. I had so much fun and everyone are so close. You still see the guys out here, it’s great.”

INDIAN GOLF STOCK RISES WITH ASIAN TOUR

Sentosa, February 5: The rise of Indian golf mirrors the growing strength of the Asian Tour where like the region’s established circuit, the nation is no longer regarded as the sleeping giant.

From the likes of Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal to

Gaganjeet Bhullar and Anirban Lahiri, India’s fortunes has sparkled through numerous achievements victories across Asia.

S.S.P. Chowrasia and C. Muniyappa, who grew up through humble beginnings, claimed magical victories in 2008 and 2009 to transform their lives while Bhullar broke through last year to win his first title en route to finishing sixth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Lahiri and Himat Rai are other young players touted for a big future.

Muniyappa, who earned one rupee a day as a forecaddie during his youth, said: “It was very important (to win the Hero Honda Indian Open) because this meant a big win at a big event. I have won only once on the domestic Tour in India but this win on the Asian Tour was a much bigger title. I’ve learnt a lot from playing on the Asian Tour. I gained more experience from tournaments across Asia.”

Their combined success on the Asian Tour, which have lifted Singh, Randhawa, Atwal and Ghei into the top-20 of the career earnings with a cumulative haul of over US$8 million in winnings, have sparked the emergence of a new and exciting generation of golfers.

Former Asian Games gold medal winner Shiv Kapur led the new wave by winning the 2005 Volvo Masters of Asia and since then, a string of other young guns have burst through onto the Asian Tour.

LEE WESTWOOD

ARJUN CHAKRABORTY’s

Hello friends, welcome to my ‘Astrologer’s Predictions’ again. In this issue, I will focus on a very nice gentleman and a fabulously talented highly ranked golfer Lee Westwood. We will see how Lee is going to perform on the field in the current season and what does the near future hold for him. But, before I move to this, I would like to remind you what I mentioned about Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods in my last article which was actually focussed on Mr.Stricker. About him I wrote ‘he will find his touch and start firing. From around mid February Steve will start impressing us all on the field’. And he did exactly so by winning the very next tournament and rising to the number 2 spot in rankings. About Tiger I wrote ‘Tiger still has the chance to save both his marriage and his golfing career’ at the time when he took an indefinite break from golf. But, now he seems to be thinking otherwise. We will follow him very closely. Now, let us get back to Lee Westwood to whom primarily this article is dedicated. Mr.Westwood will be under influence of the mystic planet ‘Rahu’ or ‘Dragon’s Head’ during this year which will effect some changes in various matters. These changes can be both on and off the field. On the field he may experiment with some new techniques or equipments which can cause some difficulties sometimes. Off the field changes can be related to his living place or some personal issues (not like Tiger of

course!). Especially he should not do much experimentation with techniques or equipments, or he will have to suffer. To be frank,

2010 does not seem to be one of his best years. It will not be bad, but certainly Lee will not be able to recollect 2010 as one of his most glorious years. So, although he will be able to maintain his ranking within the top 7 or 8, he will probably drop from his current ranking of 4 at the end of 2010. Chances of winning any major do not look bright for Mr.Westwood. His efforts for improving his game will be 100% although fulfilment of his targets will be hampered by some injuries. Our best wishes will be with him no doubt. My advice to him will be to take care of his health and stick to simple and uncomplicated game plans. In that way epecially May to July 2010 will bring some big rewards.

Dear friends, in the next issue I will check out and reveal some more secrets about any other gifted

performer. I hope you enjoy reading my articles. Till the next issue,

enjoy and keep fit!

AWESOME AMATEUR GOLF

Page 77: Swingtime Mauritius 9th issue

Golfer’s paradise •••

AWESOME AMATEUR GOLF!Golf is a big sport, with big names and

big money. It has become the lingua franca of the business world. We have seen golf super stars set new precedents and change the marketing landscape of sport forever with millions sitting glued to their screens aglow in the flash of branding campaigns. But hark, there is a juggernaut driving the sport of golf further along its starry path. Welcome to the world of Amateur Golf!

Amateur golf is played by over 60 million people on over 30 000 golf courses in almost every country around the globe. This is a staggering and thought provoking statistic. Evidently, once the bug bites you, that’s it. It will permeate the fulcrum of your existence. Swingtime got a taste of the great fun and magnetism of amateur golf over a weekend at the Links Golf Course at Belle Mare Plage with 4 golfing enthusiasts, all successful in their own professional capacities.

Two teams composing of Alan Duval (CEO of Market Info Direct) and Mondher Ouerfelli (CEO of Mondolife) competed against Ruth Linder (Asset Manager: Zurich) and Rolph Schmid (GM of Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel). These individuals strive for the very best in their relevant spheres of influence. I was eager to see them in action on the greens. Golf, being a sport that begins first and foremost in the mind was bound to illicit some dramatic animation. And it certainly did not take very long at all for this to come to pass.

Swingtime at the links •••

The ‘scramble formula’ was employed. The best shot out of each team was played from, culminating in winning scores. From the onset good natured banter ensued, with many laughs along the way. The scramble format is fantastic to watch. One cannot help but getting swept along the uncanny unpredictable nature of golf, all at a rather furious pace. The elements of drama, tension and excitement all run high. You laugh, cry and cheer as balls are lost, birdies are made, and adrenalin positively fountains as balls are watched skipping on the surface of a water hazard almost making it to the other side safely.

As a new comer to the overwhelming sensations that golf can induce, I could not help but contemplate how the medium of television doesn’t quite get the measure of the stage show that is amateur golf! Them, being amateurs displayed a consummate performance of some marvellous golf, a gamut of fantastic posture, beautiful swings, tactical putting, drives exceeding 200 metres, superb course management and very shrewd strategy.

The ethics of golf were in full force. It’s clear to see an individual’s sense of character become an intrinsic component at work. Al though the game was played for fun, everyone showed a strong determination to win. And who was the winner you may enquire? Well, everyone is a winner when awesome amateur golf is played!

GREENSIDE BUNKERS: The SPLASH SHOTThe basic greenside bunker shot with the ball lying well in good sand and the pin about 15-25m away from the edge of the green. It is a very similar shot compared to the high lob wedge; the only difference is that it is from the sand instead of the grass, also for that particular shot you will not hit the ball but the sand.

Thought of the month:Bunker shots are executed with the sand or lob wedge. Remember that it is the only area of the game that you can hit in and through the sand without any fear of hurting your wrist.

iron and that will encourage you to strike the sand before

the ball.

Remember, it is important to understand that for good bunker shots, the club enter the sand behind the ball and create the “splash” shot you see so commonly used by the Pros.

Key points to remember:Open the face of the sand wedge to expose the bounce

and use a normal grip position and light grip pressure with the stance open, the leading edge of the club points to the target. (photo)

Widen your stance and put the weight on your left side with the ball forward of the centre.

The arms and shoulders swing the club up on your left side with an early wrist hinge and on the down swing do not decelerate through the sand but continue through the shot to a high follow through finish
