SWINE INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

EXPLANATORY NOTES

The Swine Industry Performance Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type, age classification; volume of production; supply and disposition, supply and utilization accounts and; monthly average farmgate, wholesale and retail prices.

The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys namely:

1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) replicate of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) consisting of 9,700 sample households in 673 sample barangays nationwide; and

2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 1,110 independent farms as of January 2010 updated list. A swine farm is considered commercial when it has a farm capacity of at least 21 head of adult swine or 10 adults and 22 young.

Both surveys for swine are simultaneously conducted every quarter in all provinces.

Another survey that supports the statistical requirements of

the Livestock and Poultry sector is the Survey of Abattoirs and Dressing Plants (SADP*). This covers 1,120 accredited and non-accredited abattoirs nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

* Also known as Survey of Animals Slaughtered in abattoirs and Dressing Plants

TOP PRODUCING REGIONS

In 2011, around 52 percent of the total swine population were concentrated in top 5 regions namely: CALABARZON with 13.43% share; Central Luzon with 12.17%; Western Visayas with 10.67%; Central Visayas with 7.84% and Bicol Region with 7.74%. Western Visayas ranked first in backyard inventory with 13.79 percent share while CALABAR- ZON ranked first in commercial inventory with 31.67 percent share.

The total supply of swine in the country went down by 3.37 percent from 39.97

million head in 2009 to 38.62 million head in 2010. This was attributed to the 1.46 percent decline in inventory and the reduction in the number of births by 4.35 percent.

The reported number of imported live breeders in 2010 expanded by 159.09 percent from the previous year’s level.

In 2010, the total number of hogs slaughtered stood at 24.25 million head or

0.42 percent higher than last year’s level of 24.14 million head. The slowdown in the number of animals slaughtered was due to meager supply of hogs for slaughter during the first and third quarters of 2010.

SWINE INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

Hog production sustained an upward trend with a 1.11 percent growth in 2010. Increments were noted during the 2nd and 4th quarters. This could be attributed to higher demand for pork, specifically, during the May election period and the holiday season. The increased volume of slaughtering in farms and abattoirs was noted during these periods.

In 2010, the total volume of pork imports was registered at 151,143.29 metric

tons. It was higher by 73.16 percent from last year’s level of 87,284.42 metric tons. Large increments in pork imports were noted in all quarters of 2010 due to influx of imported frozen pork bellies, edible offals and other meat of swine. The value of imports correspondingly increased by 58.57 percent from US $ 51,625.01 FOB in 2009 to US $ 81,862.26 FOB in 2010.
