    How does novel H1N1Influenza spread?

This virus is thought tospread the same way

seasonal flu spreads Primarily throughrespiratory droplets Coughing Sneezing

Touching respiratory dropletson yourself, another person,or an object, then touchingmucus membranes (e.g., mouth, nose, eyes) without washinghands

IS THE CURRENT SWINEFLU CONTAGIOUS.?. IVarious international agencies (US Centers

for Disease Control & Prevention, WorldHealth Organization) have determined thatthis swine influenza A (H1N1) virus iscontagious and is spreading from human to

    human.

WHO has escalated the world PandemicPhase from Phase 3 to Phase 4 (in a 6-scalePhase), indicating that a worldwide

pandemic due to swine flu H1N1is possible.

HOW LONG CAN VIRUSLIVE OUTSIDE BODY.?

We know that some viruses and bacteriacan live 2 hours or longer on surfaces likecafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks.

Frequent hand washing will help you reducethe chance of getting contamination fromthese common surfaces.

    HISTORY OF SWINEFLU

Swine influenza was first proposed tobe a disease related to human

influenza during the 1918 flupandemic, when pigs became sick atthe same time as humans. The firstidentification of an influenza virus asa cause of disease in pigs occurredabout ten years later, in 1930.

    CONTI..

The H1N1 form of swine flu is one of thedescendants of the strain that caused the1918 flu pandemic. As well as persisting inpigs, the descendants of the 1918 virus

have also circulated in humans through the20th century, contributing to the normalseasonal epidemics of influenza. However, direct transmission from pigs to humans is

rare, with only 12 cases in the U.S. since2005.

    1918 pandemic inhumans

The 1918 flu pandemic in humanswas associated with H1N1 andinfluenza appearing in pigs; this

may reflect a zoonosis either fromswine to humans, or from humansto swine.

It is estimated that anywhere from50 to 100 million people were killedworldwide.

    1976 U.S. outbreak

On February 5, 1976, in the United States anarmy recruit at Fort Dix said he felt tired andweak. He died the next day and four of hisfellow soldiers were later hospitalized. Twoweeks after his death, health officialsannounced that the cause of death was a newstrain of swine flu. The strain, a variant ofH1N1, is known as A/New Jersey/1976 (H1N1).It was detected only from January 19 toFebruary 9 and did not spread beyond Fort Dix.

    Lose Weight

New data has suggested that obesity, especially extreme obesity (BMI over40), raises swine flu victims' chance ofdying. The study, published by theCenters for Disease Control andPrevention, looked at the cases ofswine flu patients at a Michiganhospital, all of whom had to be placedon ventilators due to the severity of

their illness. Being overweight reducesyour immunity and therefore chancesof contraction increases while recoverytoo becomes difficult.

    Swine Flu High RiskGroups

Swine flu high risk groups, peoplewho are thought to be at risk for

serious, life-threatening infections, are a little different and can include:

    * pregnant women* people with chronic medicalproblems, such as chronic lung

disease, like asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and immunosuppressant

    * children and adults with obesity

    WHAT SHOULD I DO

  • 8/14/2019 Swine Flue Original

    36/51

WHAT SHOULD I DOIF GET SICK? If you live in areas where swineinfluenza cases have been

identified and become ill withinfluenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea,or vomiting or diarrhea, youmay want to contact their healthcare provider, particularly if you

are worried about yoursymptoms. Your health careprovider will determine whetherinfluenza testing or treatment isneeded.

If you are sick, you should stayhome and avoid contact withother people as much as

possible to keep from spreadingyour illness to others.

    Watch for emergencywarning signs

Most people should be able to recover at home, but watch foremergency warning signs that mean you should seekimmediate medical care. In adults:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

    Sudden dizziness

    Confusion

    Severe or persistent vomiting

Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

    Emergency warningsigns in children

If a child gets sick and experiences any of thesewarning signs, seek emergency medical care.

In children: Fast breathing or trouble breathing

Bluish or gray skin color Not drinking enough fluids Severe or persistent vomiting Not waking up or not interacting Irritable, the child does not want to be held Flu-like symptoms improve but then return

    with fever and worse cough

    40/51

    HOE ARE HUMANINFECTIONS WITH SWINE

INFLUENZA DIAGONIZED? To diagnose swine influenza Ainfection, a respiratoryspecimen would generally needto be collected within the first 4to 5 days of illness (when an

infected person is most likely tobe shedding virus).

However, some persons, especially children, may shedvirus for 10 days or longer.

Identification as a swine fluinfluenza A virus requiressending the specimen to ahospital laboratory for testing.

    MEDICINES TO TREAT

? The US CDC recommends the use ofoseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir(Relenza) for the treatment and/orprevention of infection with theseswine influenza viruses.

Antiviral drugs are prescriptionmedicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler)that fight against the flu by keepingflu viruses from reproducing in yourbody.

If you get sick, antiviral drugs canmake your illness milder and makeyou feel better faster. They may also

prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work

best if started soon after getting sick(within 2 days of symptoms).

    41

  • 8/14/2019 Swine Flue Original

    42/51

    Antiviral will help to:

reduce the length of time you are ill byaround one day

    relieve some of the symptoms

reduce the potential for seriouscomplications such as pneumonia

    42

    IS THERE A VACCINE

  • 8/14/2019 Swine Flue Original

    43/51

IS THERE A VACCINEFOR A FLU ? Because the virus is new,

there will be no vaccineready to protect againstpandemic flu.

Vaccine against Swine Fluvirus H1N1 needs at least 6-12 months to be produced.

    Seasonal flu vaccine or past

    flu immunization will notprovide protection.

    HOUSE HOLD CLEANIING,LAUNDARY & WASTE

DISPOSAL Throw away tissues and other disposable itemsused by the sick person in the trash. Wash yourhands after touching used tissues and similarwaste.

Keep surfaces (esp. bedside tables, surfaces inthe bathroom, childrens toys, phone handles, doorknobs) clean by wiping them down with ahousehold disinfectant according to directions onthe product label.

Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging tothose who are sick do not need to be cleanedseparately, but importantly these items shouldnot be shared without washing thoroughly first.

    CONCLUSION

CDC anticipates that there will be more cases, more hospitalizations and more deathsassociated with this new virus in the comingdays and weeks because the population has little

    to no immunity against it.

We must all work together to limit and controlthe transmission of novel H1N1 influenza.
