Competition Swimming PoolsMetz swimming pool tiles are produced in a modular 250x125mm format (nett size 244 x 119mm). This format enables precision placement to required competition dimensions using full piece tiles.

Swim SchoolsLearn to swim pools require safety and durability. Metz tiles provide the most durable finish with minimal maintenance. Lost time and empty pools to carry out repairs or re-application of other finishes is not only expensive, but produces a significant risk of clients going elsewhere.

Leisure and Fun PoolsMetz swimming pool range offers all the essentials to provide a safe and fun environment. Bright colours, slip resistant surfaces, rounded edges and a myriad of glazed on shapes and images are available.

Swimming Pool Concourses and SurroundsSwimming pool surrounds require the highest levels of slip resistance. Excited children and distracted adults require secure footing for the critical barefoot areas. Metz only recommend wet barefoot “ C –rated” tiles for these applications. Our experience is that many facilities have been dissatisfied with the performance of their “B- rated” tiles, which are the minimum recommendation of the Standards Australia slip-resistance handbooks HB 197 & HB 198.

Technical InformationSLIP RESISTANCE RECOMMENDATIONS

Metz recommend higher slip resistance than the current Standards Australia slip resistance handbook minimums of a “B wet barefoot” rated tile. It is often poorly understood that the recommendations in these handbooks are in fact minimums, and that the handbooks strongly advise designers to consider many factors in their designs such as maintenance, contamination, the nature of users (age, gait, crowding), slope, lighting and footwear (or lack of).

The latest slip resistance handbook (HB 198) and latest revision of AS 4586:2013 also make significant note on the effects of wear on slip resistance. It is widely recognised that slip resistance on all surfaces declines from wear over time. Many surface types are particularly susceptible to loss of slip resistance, following what would appear to be a relatively minimal amount of initial wear.

Accelerated Wear Test (AWT) methods are designed to enable specifiers to determine if a product is susceptible to rapid and significant decline in slip resistance. The result from 500 wear (scrub) cycles is excellent at predicting poorly performing products that otherwise seem suitable when brand new. Results from 5,000 wear (scrub) cycles provide prediction of results after long term use.

Accelerated wear testing is only used in conjunction with wet pendulum testing. For this reason all Metz recommended concourse tiles achieve P5 ratings on the pendulum test and C ratings on the wet barefoot ramp test.

Metz strongly recommend both Barefoot C / Wet Pendulum P5 rated tiles for the following areas:-- Pool floors water depth <1.5m- Pool edges- Raised hobs- Lap pool turning walls- Steps and stairs- Underwater seats and ledges- Pool concourses and surrounds- Shower areas- Entries- Change-rooms - Amenities.

Poor selection can result in a long term problem that is expensive to rectify and leaves operators vulnerable to claims following a slip incident.

DESCRIPTION

European Porcelain tiles - manufactured to EN (ISO) 14411 Water absorption <1.0%Standard Pool Tiles 7.5mm thick dry pressed production.Special production alternative 10mm thick extruded productionEdge and special pieces 10mm thick extruded with dovetail keyed back. Ribbed tiles include anti-skid textured finish to ensure maximum grip in all directions.

INSTALLATION

Purpose made, high strength two-part adhesives such as Metz 27 (C2TES2 type), are recommended. Tiles must be installed in accordance with Australian Standard AS 3958.1:2007 refer appendix E - Wet conditions (continuously immersed). Particular attention to be paid to paragraph E2.6 noting that “the tiles should be solidly bedded so that voids are eliminated beneath them as far as possible”.

Metz recommends that back - buttering each tile and then systematically placing tiles onto notched adhesive ribs and immediately working the tile back and forth across the ribs by 10 to 15mm is the best way to ensure minimal voids are present in the adhesive.

Voids underneath swimming pool tiles are believed to be a major cause of adhesion failure where the voids can inter –connect. Where tiles are not worked into adhesive ribs – these ribbed voids provide the perfect interconnection for water flow underneath the tile, leading to failure.

Technical Information

Epoxy grouts provide superior performance, however they should be UV colour stabilised. Where cement grouts are used they should be performance grade (CG2WA type), such as Metz CG2.

Membranes are desirable for pools above ground level, as are secondary water stop – joint bandages for a belt and braces approach. The pool shell should be capable of primary containment and designed as a water retaining structure.

Contact Metz for a full adhesive and installation method specification.

a. Adhesion failure. Note the poor adhesive coverage and a lack of working the tile into the adhesive.

b. Adhesion failure. Note the lack of working the tiles into the adhesive notches. Note the continuous nature of the interconnecting adhesive ribs allowing water to flow in the voids left under the tile.

c. Correctly installed tile showing 100% adhesive coverage from back-buttering the tiles and working the tile across the adhesive ribs.

Metz Project Services Pty Ltd can provide a professional single point of responsibility installation. Contact the Metz Project Services team for a quotation.
