    Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild

    Business Meeting MinutesJan. 17, 2015

    Business meeting was called to order a 1pm by President Lorraine Capps. New member Dale Weber was introduced, alsoJohn Gorman. Minutes of last months meeting were approved. Dee gave the treasurers report.The Nominating Committee has been appointed. Francine Gerson and Kathy Erickson will be working on that and will becalling members to help fill positions.VAC show -- They installed our new lighting while we were installing the show but all went well. The refreshments wereexceptional and the executive director was very pleased at the quality of the art and the attendance of the reception.Winners were: 1st place Lynn Ondercin, 2nd place Louis Ford, Third place Kathy Erickson, Merit award Stan Dzedzyand Honorable Mention Jay Lana. Removal is January 30th; please pick up your pieces that day or make arrangements forsomeone else to.Our next show is A Walk on the Wild Side at CCAS. Receiving is Feb. 2nd, 9:00am to 12:00 noon. The judge is an impressiveglass artist, Sky McDonagh. Let Lorraine know if you plan to participate. We also need volunteers for receiving. Thereception is February 13th from 5 to 7pm. Please invite family and friends.News from the Board We have discussed adding photography to accepted media and simplifying and redesigning theGuild logo. Members will be able to vote on these ideas at the next meeting.There is a problem with members not signing their waivers or having the people that deliver their art sign for them. Please bereminded to send the signed form with you if you dont deliver your pieces yourself.

    Phyllis reported that the Grant committee has met and has to decide what they want to focus on. They are looking for ideasfor future grant proposals from us. Martha will be emailing members to help come up with specific ideas. Some that havebeen brought up are: art and the environment, a civic gift to the court house or airport, functional art for kids, and fundingfor our own gallery.Kathy reported on membership. We have 105 members, 94 active and 18 that still need to pay their dues. If you know anyonewho has been out of town or missed meetings for other reasons, please remind them.Artist@Work 15 artists are participating. Event is Feb 28th, 10am to 1pm. There is a nice Farmers Market in conjunctionplus the gallery is open to the public. If you are not participating please come and support fellow members.Arts Council Winners Circle reception is March 19th, 5pm to 7pm at the VAC.Coconut Point Gallery is having an orientation for all artists, new and old on January 26th from 10am to 12 noon.Craft Bash is January 25th. There will be 10 workshops and tickets are on sale here and now for the raffle and will continueto be on sale the day of the Bash.Upcycle show at Ding Darling is April 1st and 2nd. It is open to artists who use more than 60% recycled materials in theirwork. Toni has 9 artists already accepted so far. The make and take will be socktopus made from socks and bags madefrom t-shirts. Please bring to the next meeting any clean plastic grocery bags, light- colored clean sock you dont need, andany t-shirt of any size or color for this project. Last year, 5,000 people went through the preserve that day and probably halfstopped at the event. Also at Ding Darling, our little corner for sales is being taken away, at least temporarily as the gift shopdirector has more product to display and has extra work putting our prices in their system. Craft Guild is invited to have aninformation table at the Upcycle event. Volunteers will be needed for that as well.

    Jeanne reported on the display case at CCAS. She would like to see new members or people that havent displayed yet get achance to have their month. She has Martha scheduled for March and would like new members to sign up for April, puttingin one piece each. Right now May through October is available. Jay asked about size restrictions.We just got a new sponsor, AAE Glass. They will be a great sponsor.There are many volunteer opportunities available, which were discussed, and members were directed to the list on theagenda.In July we have a show called Funk and Funktional at the Sydney Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers. Wewill be in one of the new galleries. Please plan ahead if you will not be in town, and have a friend take your work to

    Receiving.Walk on the Wild Side show is coming up February 2nd. Artists may put in 4 pieces and pieces from VAC may be used.There will be no attendance requirement which makes all new members eligible. We encourage everyone to p articipate.Nancy asked everyone to go on the Guilds website, see if you like the photos of your art, think about what youd like toupdate or change, and send her any new photos you have.Bonnie wanted to remind us that she is teaching a new class in f iber art at the Alliance.Sherry is also teaching a class making Viking Knit Jewelry at the Alliance.Copies of Fort Myers Magazine, annual arts edition, were distributed. The Guild is mentioned several times. The newHappenings magazine also has information about us.Next meeting is Feb. 21st and Attorney Anne Dalton will be presenting information about copyright issues and answering allour questions.Friendship meeting, a strictly social gathering, will be held at Francines house on February 15th.Please RSVP.Meeting was adjourned at 1:45.     The Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild wants to remind youpersonally that your 2015 dues need to be paid for theyear. We encourage your continued membership in a growinggroup of fine craft artists. Our busiest season still has anexhibit at the Cape Coral Arts Studio, an exhibit at SydneyBerne Davis, demonstrations at the Alliance for the Arts, DingDarling Upcycle, and participation in the Coconut PointGallery where the Guild continues to be the top seller.Dues remain at $35 for individual / $50 for family. You canplan to pay at the February meeting where you can

    CO-OP ART GALLERY UPDATES:

    Sales figures are in for 2014, and the Gallery did over $14,000

    in sales, which is in keeping with the previous years sales

    More importantly, the Guild was responsible for over HALF

    of those sales! Congratulations to everyone who sold during

    the year. We look forward to another strong year of sales!

    Recent changes at the gallery include changing Receivingsback to the first Monday of the month, with the Receptionsthe following Thursday from 4-6 PM. Consequently, MarchReceiving is Monday, March 2 from 10 AM 1 PM and theMarch Reception is Thursday, March 5 from 4 6 PM. It isessential that you arrive at the Gallery for Receiving intime to be completely finished by 1 PM. In order not to berushed, please arrive at the gallery at least by noon. Thenumber of pieces an artist may bring to the Gallery is a total o6 items.

    The gallery sitting schedule can be found on the Art Councilsweb site. If you must change your sitting date, it is yourresponsibility to find a replacement AND you must emailGinny Whiteman at [email protected]. Ginny must haveupdated information regarding the sitting schedule. There is alist of people who are willing to sit for a price of $50. For thelatest information on the Gallery, you may consult the GalleryProspectus and Art Council newsletters for details. Both canbe downloaded from their web site: www.acswf.org. In orderto participate in the Gallery, you must be a member of the

    Guild for three months and you must attend two businessmeetings.

    CCAS GUILD CASE:

    The Guilds display case is located in Building 2 of CCAS.CCAS retains 30% of the sales, so work should be pricedaccordingly. New members and members who have nevershown in the case before should take advantage of this

    The application for the 2nd annual Upcycle! Recycle Art Festis now online atwww.dingdarlingsociety.org.The Fest will beset-up on March 31, 2015 with the show on April 1 & 2, 2015.It will again be located inside the Nature Center and will belimited to 25 artists. Work must be primarily 60% recycledmaterials. Volunteers will be needed for make & take crafts.

    FRIENDSHIP MEETINGS:

    Friendship meetings are our way of providing moreopportunities for us to get together in a relaxed, social setting.The hosts simply provide non-alcoholic drinks and paperproducts, and the attendees supply everything else. The hostsmay choose the day of the week and the time of day. ContactLorraine if you are interested in hosting. Hosting and

    attending Friendship Meetings do not count towards Guildvolunteer requirements.

    Harbour View Gallery Seeks Monthly Featured Artists. Theycurrently have openings for 3-D artists for months in 2015,including some months during peak season. This programoffers artists a place to show and sell their designs to the

    public for a one month period. During the month, the galleryfeatures these two artists on the website, in local magazine

    Advertising Committee: Connie Ehret needs help withadvertising. We could use two additional people on thisCommittee.Art Council Delegate: The Art Council Delegate goes to mostArt Council meetings (November through April), and reportsto the membership all Art Council and Co-op Gallery newsand developments. The Delegate also collects information forthe Art Councils biennial Winners CircleExhibit, presents itto the Board for approval, and provides that information tothe Art Council.Breakfast for the Arts: The Guild will be hosting the monthlyBreakfast for the Arts meeting at CCAS on Thursday, April 162015, at 9 AM. We will need to provide a light breakfast, andwe will need someone to organize it. Hopefully we can find amember to volunteer to do a demo as well. These interestingand informative meetings are organized by the Alliance for theArts, include staff from many of the area arts organizationsand provide an excellent networking opportunity. Attendanceby Guild members would also be greatly appreciated.Buddy System: Established members who are active in the

    Guild are assigned to a new member and make themselvesavailable to explain all facets of Guild activities, answer allquestions and concerns, sit with new members duringmeetings, and generally help them become informed and feecomfortable as quickly as possible. There is a pool of people topull from when new members join, and we had can always usemore.Ding Darling Upcycle Festival:We need volunteers to helpwith make-and-take tables during the Upcycle Festival onApril 1 and 2. We are hoping to have enough volunteers sothat we can have two hour shifts. If you have any questionsplease contact Toni Ory.Hospitality: Our Hospitality Committee needs one more

    person to help prepare the refreshments for meetings andkeep track of paper products and other supplies.Publicity: Kelly Flaherty has joined the committee to writepress releases! Thanks, Kelly! Our Publicity Chair, AngelaAradia, needs another person to help her reach out to

    journalists, editors, and writers for potential stories andcoverage. This is a deadline-oriented position, and writing andorganizational skills are needed. Angela is also looking forsomeone to maintain a presence on Facebook, TwitterInstagram, and Pinterest. This is a fun and interesting fieldand is an extremely important area for the Guild.Please contact Dave Sampson to discuss volunteer needs andassignments.
