4 • FALL 2018 GUIDE

We are excited to kick-off our last session of the year in September, and we can guarantee there is something for everyone in our busy schedule. As usual, you’ll be able to find your favorite classes and workshops in the more “traditional” fine arts, like painting, drawing, and pottery. I’m thrilled to share that we have planned new courses in photography, film, and mindfulness. I am looking forward to seeing many of you return for the Fall session, and would encourage you to spread the word about our Education programs to your family and friends. This fall we will feature Three Foot Square, a solo exhibition of new abstract paintings by Scott Hunter. Our Mavuno Festival of African American Art and Culture features Ebony Castapheny, a local dancer who specializes in West African Dance, as well as Bonita Lee Penn, a writer and poet. In addition to highlighting the work of both of these wonderful artists through classes and workshops, we will feature a photography exhibit titled Reflection and Remembrance. Back by popular demand are the Gospel Brunch and Muddled+Mixed events. For more information, please see page 15 in this guide. Finally, our annual Holiday mART sale begins with a preview party on Saturday, November 24th and continues November 27th through December 9th. Stay tuned for more details! On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, I’d like to thank you, so much, for your continued support and dedication to Sweetwater. We are committed to providing you with the best experiences in the creative, fine and performing arts – and we couldn’t do it without you!

All my best,

Tommy Thomas P. Walters, Executive Director

Education programs at Sweetwater Center for the Arts are supported in part by grants from Allegheny Regional Asset District, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, private foundations, corporations and businesses, and the generous support of many individuals.

Three Foot SquareNew Abstract Paintings by Scott Hunter August 11 - September 7, 2018Reception: Saturday, August 11, 6:00-8:00pmArtist Talk: Thursday, August 30, 7:00-8:30pmFREEScott Hunter’s work is rooted in tradition, drawn from observation and constructed with imagination. It is about the arrangement of images, textures, colors and shapes. He produces two distinct bodies of paintings, working in both a representational and nonrepresentational manner while struggling with the need to merge figuration with a love of abstract expressionism. Both evoke a specific place or memory and resonate with emotional presence. Three Foot Square will offer a selection of new abstract paintings and invites you to consider these works in relation to the traditions of both realism and abstraction. Scott studied painting and drawing at Boston University and now lives and works in Bethel Park, PA. He has shown his work regionally and nationally and is represented in many private and public collections. www.scotthunterfineart.com

MAVUNO Reflection & RemembranceExhibition of Historical Photographs of African Americans in SewickleySeptember 22 – October 20, 2018Reception: Saturday, Sept. 22, 6:00-8:00pmFREEThe history of African Americans in Sewickley dates back to the 1820s. With the first groups arriving as domestic workers for the wealthy, then migrants from Virginia and Kentucky coming to work in construction, a large community of African Americans was quickly formed. As the community grew Sewickley’s first African American mission, the historic St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion church, was founded in 1857 and became a safe house for those escaping slavery in the Underground Railroad. Building off this rich history, Sewickley’s African American residents have lived, worked and celebrated, generation after generation. This exhibition brings together historical photographs from the community to view with reflection and remembrance. Thank you to The Sewickley Valley Historical Society, The Sewickley Community Center and local residents for offering use of their photograph archives for this exhibition.
