I Edyta Sitar’s quilting life is intricately tied to family. Her mother, a skilled Polish seamstress, patiently taught four-year-old Edyta to sew. When Edyta married, she and her husband moved in with his grandmother, who shared her quilting skills of 60 years with Edyta. And now Edyta’s 13-year-old daughter is smitten with sewing: she’s made four quilts, including one each for her older sister and younger brother.

“I often think quilting becomes the branches that hold up our family tree,” says Edyta, who has since taught her mother to quilt. “It’s a wonderful con-nection between generations.”

Balancing those intertwined branches can be challenging. In addition to writing books and designing patterns, Edyta teaches around the country. She credits her husband, Michael, with making it possible. “He is very involved and sup-ports me 150 percent,” she says. He’s not the only family member engaged in the business. “My older daughter is 17 and very organized. She talks to customers on the phone and makes sure orders are bagged and shipped. Over the years all my children have accompanied me to quilt shows and gotten to know my customers.”

The branches on Edyta’s quilting tree don’t end there. In 2007, her first fabric collection for Moda debuted and she is currently working on her 12 line. The relationship has special meaning for her.

“Moda welcomed me and treated me like a sister,” she says. “When people care for and appreciate you, you prosper. For someone from another coun-try, that’s so important.” 6
