The preschool actually dates back to 1980 when it operated a half-day school, according to Becky Dorris, director. This was the first pre-school established in the area, although there were a couple of small daycare facili- ties in existence. Then, in September 1984, after a major expansion to en- large the church, the Swansboro United Methodist Child Care and Preschool opened its doors. The Rev. Arthur Phillips was the pastor at the time, Lorraine Har- ris was the director and Gwen Vroom was a teacher. Dorris, who has been in her position since 1985, said she has seen a lot of growth over the years. “At that time, the child care and preschool was licensed for 38 children,” explained Dorris. “After some moving around of age groups and classrooms, the center was re-licensed for 77 children.” With the expansion of the number of children in 1985, it was necessary to hire additional staff, and in 1992, Vicki Babner was named assistant director. Currently there are 12 staff members. Many have been in place since the late 1980s and early 1990s, but all have been with the childcare and preschool for at least 10 years. “We are proudest of our cen- ter because of our core staff,” said Dorris. “Longevity makes a difference with the quality you give families.” Babner said the facility is known for quality care. “Low class size and our repu- tation have stuck with us,” she said. “We have more of a family atmosphere. All our staff knows all the children and their fami- lies.” That helped Swansboro Unit- ed Methodist Child Care and Preschool be recognized in 2005 as Child Care Center of the Year in Onslow County. Swansboro United Method- ist Child Care and Preschool of- fers full-time care for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age and offers a 1/2-day preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds. Additionally, the center offers after-school care for school age children. The center offers a teaching method that encompasses guid- ed play activities, creative art, music, outdoor play, conversa- tion, story times, dramatic play and group activities, according to Dorris. “Our goal is to offer a Chris- tian atmosphere for group care in which the whole child can grow,” she said. “Through a warm, accepting climate and a rich program, we try to give all the children a natural step from home to school. We help each child grow in independence, so- cial development and the devel- opment of his or her own unique talents and abilities.” Town’s first pre-school in 25 th year Swansboro UMC Staff members pause for a photo on the 25 th anniver- sary of the pre-school and day care.
