Dr Ashoke Binaykia, MS and a renowned surgeon of Kolkata with an experience of running two 100-bedded-multispecialty hospitals as Managing Director for last 20 years. He is asso-ciated with renowned organization e.g. Swami Vivekananda Institute of Science & Technology as its chairman and with Innova Biotech Industry and AB Technology Pvt. Ltd. as managing Director respectively.

Dr. Nandan Gupta Dr. Nandan Gupta (MBBS, PGDM IIM C), is the Secretary of Swami Vivekananda Institute of Science & Technology. He was Health Finance Consultant in Strategic Planning and Sector Reform Cell of Govt. of West Bengal. He is the Director of BDRC and Medview Service Pvt. Ltd. Dr. Gupta is also the President of Burdwan Institute of Management and Computer Science and the Vice — President of Oriental Association For Education & Research that runs one school and three colleges.

Greetings from SVIMCS !Swami Vivekananda Institute of Management & Computer Science (SVIMCS) is about to complete successful ten years in the field of management education. With proper infrastructural facility, composed educational environment and overwhelming placement struc-ture, it has established itself as one of the premier management institutes in eastern India. Apart from quality education the success story of SVIMCS is boosted by its impeccable placement record. The institute provides 100% placement assistance. It is the student who has to grab this opportunity with both hand and over the years they have done so gleefully. The placement of SVIMCS thrives with the support and inputs from all the faculty members —Prof. Sandip Roy Chowdhury. Prof. Kakali Gupta, Prof. Swamabha Das. Prof. Supriya Roy, Prof Bipradas Bhattacharya and Prof Srimayi Majumdar. But major contributioncontribution towards placement activities is done by two of the most dynamic and energetic faculties of the department— Prof. Amitava Gupta & Prof. Amit De.Their continuous effort and dedication to place thestudents suitably has contributed enormouslyenormously to the accomplishment of the institute. Overall development of the students is first and foremost criteria along with the placement activities here in SVIMCS. We emphasize on soft skill classes, body language and gesture inputs, mock interview sessions, group activity and leadership simulations apart from case study approach and problem solving sessions. Summer internship project (SIP) is another important step in career building at SVIMCS. Through SIP, students get a short stint at different corporate environments: they have a feel of life beyond studentship.studentship. This co-curricular activity helps them to decide the particular area of business they would like to pursue for their brighter future. For the last several years we have built a rapport with big industries through placement activities. Companies from different parts of India and abroad come for students placement in our campus at Sonarpur. TCS, Berger, Genpact, Axis Bank, Minty, Bosch, DCB Bank,UAE Exchange, BFC Forex, Pran Food FM are to name a few of the national and overseas companies that graced our campus. Every year more than 70% students get placed through campus recruitment process. Some of them get the opportunity to bebe placed internationally. Our association with the students does not end with their departure from the institute. Every year we arrange for a get-together and interation with yester year's students through our alumni association, where they share their experiences and knowledge of working in different corporate environment. The current students get enriched with their inputs and prepare themselves for the future obstacles. Also if any opportunity comes for our alumni, we extend all possible help to place old students after they have finished their degree. In the sense the institute works as extended family and goes beyond the scope of education, mentoring and placement to make a student a complete man equipped with all possible qualities to cope up with the future.

An IntroductionThe Government of West Bengal set up an expert committee on December 31, 1998, under the Chairmanship of Ashesh Prasad Mitra, Eminent Scientist to explore the necessity and scope for establishment of an Engineering / Technology University in the state of West Bengal.

TheThe University came into operation formally with the assumption of the office of the first Vice Chancellor on January 15, 2001 as a sequel to the promulgation of THE WEST BENGAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ACT, 2001, under West Bengal Act XV of 2000 passed by the West Bengal Legislature. The University started its academic programme, from July 16, 2001 following a Notification from the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal dated June 15, 2001 through the affiliation of Engineering and Management Institutions / Colleges and has entered the eighth year of its functioning. The UniversityUniversity is included in Section 2F and also in Section 12B of UGC and recipient of UGC Grant.

To realize its mission of emerging as a Centre of Excellence the University has created three Schools of Studies viz. School of Engineering & Technology (SET), School of Biotechnology & Biological Sciences (SBTBS) and School of Management and Sciences (SOMS) comprising presently of five departments viz. Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering & Management, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Bioinformatics and Department of Management and Sciences.

SPECIASPECIAL FEATURE:Our teching staff includes, besides the core faculty, visiting faculty, adjunct faculty members and distinguished visitors from the industry and front line academic and research institutes of the country and abroad. The core faculty itself comprises 37 teaching person-nel.

The basic objective of the University shall be to organize undergraduate courses of study in Engineering and Technology, especially in emerging areas. The university now affiliates 160 institutions spread over 15 districts of the state of West Bengal. Postgraduate study is being carried out in 30 of them and research is being carried out for the grooming of scien-tists, engineers and technologists. We have now intake capacity of about 3000 students at post graduate level. In this venture our affiliates are our cherished partners. We continu-ously seel new partners in excellence be it industry or other institutions of higher learning. The University has intimate and collaborative linkages with national and International research institutes, University and the industries.

The affiliated collges enjoy financial autonomy from beginning. They also enjoy substan-tial autonomy in academic matters. They can suggest establishment of elective papers, frame their syllabus and get it ratified by the University Academic Council at UG level.

The University besides being supported by the State Government and central grant giving agencies, organizes programs to generate as much as 90% of its own resources. A number of our courses offered at the UG level are now accrediated by NBA. By the end of this academic session this number is expected to go up substantially.
