As the baby boom generation (those currently aged between 51 and 69) nears retirement age, the engineering sector is challenged with a fundamental concern; attracting, retaining and engaging skilled engineers and technicians. The potential loss of legacy knowledge, skills and expertise, is quickly becoming a major threat to the UK economy and many engineering organisations. Overlay this with a shortage of young people enrolling on engineering, mathematical and scientific subjects, the problem is compounded, signaling turbulent times ahead if ignored.

As Business owners and leaders, history tells us that ignoring the changing dynamics of the marketplace is a sure fire way to make it into the business hall of shame. As the skills gap begins to widen, firms can minimise the risk to business through the development of robust attraction and retention strategies. Figuring out the best way to manage mass loss of expertise, while developing the skills of existing and new employees will enable organisations to create a sustainable, highly skilled workforce.

According to research by Unum and Oxford Economics the average cost of replacing a departing staff member is £30,614. In 2017 Swagelok Manchester invested an average of £1,350 on training and development per employee, and our employee turnover rate is typically below 5% per year, compared to a UK average of around 15% (source monster.co.uk) .

The operating company should have a formal competency assurance scheme to ensure all personnel (company and contract) who work on small bore tubing systems are assessed as competent and trained as required.

You want your team to be safe and productive, but there are so many concerns to look out for. Concerns like insufficient training and knowledge, which are among the most commonly cited safety issues in plants. That’s pressure, but Swagelok can help with essential training www.swagelok.com/en/Services/training-and-education/Swagelok_Essentials in tube fitting assembly, hose, and tube bending, as well as assistance with proper product selection www.swagelok.com/en/Services/Sales_and_Service_Support/Product_Selection_and_Guidance, and evaluation www.swagelok.com/en/Services/Evaluation_and_Advisory_Services of your systems.

Training helps employees acquire new skills and knowledge to perform their job better, thus increasing job satisfaction. It is also widely appreciated as a benefit and can increase employee loyalty and retention. In a recent Swagelok Manchester customer survey it was encouraging to learn that 84% of respondents reported that training is considered a high priority for their organisation. The most frequent employee and business benefits cited were safety, productivity, staff retention and motivation.

An IBM C-suite Study with 4,183 leaders in 70 countries and 20 industries found that the organisations they classed as ‘leading’ provided employees with continuous “refresher training” which contributed to helping create a culture that fosters continuous learning and leads to better and faster business results.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?ECITB installation training courses are ideally suited to personnel undertaking operations on small bore tubing assemblies and systems using twin ferrule, mechanical grip fittings across all industries. This course prepares engineers for the ECITB technical tests TSBT01 & TSBT02.

ASSESSMENTThrough an individual knowledge test and practical exercises delegates demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between installation requirements and health and safety in the workplace.

HOW TO BOOKTo find out when this course is available please visit our website manchester.swagelok.com or if you prefer, email our training team at [email protected] This training course is grant-aided for ECITB registered employers.

ECITB TECHNICAL TESTS TSBT01 & TSBT02

TSBT01 - ASSEMBLE AND INSTALL SMALL BORE TUBING ASSEMBLIES

TSBT02 - DISASSEMBLE AND REINSTALL SMALL BORE TUBING ASSEMBLIES

Technical testing with an associated ECITB certificate of achievement plays a key role in validating an individual’s skill, ability and job knowledge in a specific task area. Each test consists of a knowledge test and practical activity test against identified test criteria. We offer two ECITB approved technical tests covering the small bore tubing assemblies.

TSBT01Technical Assessment – Assemble and Install Small Bore Tubing Assemblies (Twin Ferrule)The candidate has to successfully use the appropriate tools, equipment and materials to plan, prepare, fabricate, assemble and install a small bore tubing assembly as per the specified drawing and within set tolerances.

TSBT02Technical Assessment – Disassemble and Reinstall Small Bore Tubing Assemblies (Twin Ferrule)The candidate has to successfully dismantle and identify faults and defects on small bore tubing assemblies, then reinstall small bore tubing assemblies using the appropriate tools, equipment and materials as per the specified drawing and specification sheet within set tolerances.NB These tests are grant-aided for ECITB registered employers.

WHO CAN TAKE A TECHNICAL TEST?• New workers who have an ECITB SBTC01

approved course certificate AND a completed work based task assignment personal record signed off by their supervisor. The minimum time from completing the SBTC01 course to sitting a technical test is 3 months (max 12 months).

• Existing workers who have a company letter of endorsement AND a small bore tubing or instrument pipework training certificate(s); (where applicable).

• Self-sponsoring individuals whose curriculum vitae (CV) details previous small bore tubing experience AND who have a small bore tubing or instrument pipework training certificate(s); (where applicable).

All candidates will be issued with a pre-test checklist to ensure they are properly prepared for the testing session.

TECHNICAL TEST LENGTH2hrs - 2hrs 30mins Maximum four candidates per test
