History Infrastructure Replacement
Trenchless Definition
Trenchless technologya type of subsurface construction work that requires few trenches or no continuous trenches. It is a rapidly growing sector of the construction and civil engineeringindustry. It can be defined as "a family of methods, materials, and equipment capable of being used for the installation of new or replacement or rehabilitation of existing underground infrastructure with minimal disruption to surface traffic, business, and other activities."
Open Cut vs. Trenchless
An estimated 75% of infrastructure replacement/rehabilitation is done utilizing open cut vs 25% trenchless technologies.
Digging of open trenches is a common practice for laying of almost all underground utility services
Growing Cities have continued hurdles with vehicular traffic and environmental challenges
Installation Methods Comparison
Open Cut installation• Huge Restoration Cost• Impacts Communities and Business• Extended Construction Time• Adverse Environmental Impact
“Happy Communities Make Happy Politicians”
Trenchless Methods Reduce• Project Cost• Business Interruption Cost• Construction Time• Political Cost

United Kingdom – British Gas Development of Swagelining & Pipe bursting in 1970’s
Pipe Bursting & Swagelining History
History– Methods developed by British Gas (1970’s) and patented for
gas distribution
– Success led to potable water crossover
– Pipe bursting – 100,000,000 feet installed in past 32 years
– Pre-chlorinated method approved by Florida DEP in conjunction with AWWA in 1999
– Swagelining - 29,800,000 feet installed in the past 32 years
Today– Over 85% of water mains replaced via pre-chlorinated pipe
bursting across Europe
– AWWA M28 approved pre-chlorination process

Compression Fit HDPE Pipe lining Process
Compression Fit HDPE LiningEngineering Value
– Follows path of existing utility
– Maintains or slightly increases flow
– Install HDPE pipe that is Solution to the Problem
Fully structural HDPE (Class IV plus)– Design for both Internal Pressures and External Loading
– Full “Stand-Alone” Capability
Semi structural HDPE
Thin walled HDPE
Compression Fit HDPE LiningConstruction Value
– Insertion lengths up to 5,000 feet
– Pipe sizes of 4” through 65” Static Pipe Bursting most suitable 4” through 16” Water Transmission & Sewer Force Mains most suitable 16”
through 65”
– Negotiates field bends
– Surgical excavations of 92% less than open cut
– Environmentally sensitive
– Undertake projects year round
– Social costs reduced
Compression Fit Installation –Preparation of Host Pipe
Camera/man entry inspection
Cleaning
Proving pig sent through host pipe to ensure free bore path
Compression Fit Installation –Butt Fusion
Sections of HDPE pipe are butt fused together
External bead removed
Compression Fit Installation -Shuttle Rods through host pipe
Compression Fit Installation –Attach pipe once rods reach entry pit
Compression Fit Installation –Reducing Die
HDPE pipe has an OD slightly larger than the ID of the pipe to be renewed
Pipe is pulled through a reduction die which temporarily reduces its diameter
Compression Fit Installation –Rods recovered at exit pit
Rods are removed from the exit pit as pipe is pulled into place
For the next pull the exit pit becomes new entry pit
Compression Fit Installation –HDPE enters receiving pit
Pulling force removed
Natural relaxation of HDPE
90% of reversion occurs in 2 hours
Remaining reversion occurs overnight
Compression Fit Process –Results
No gaps - all annular space is eliminated
Fully structural pipe
Interactive pipe
Thin walled liner
Compression Fit Installation –Final Connections
Advanced Engineered Solution
Follows existing utility path
Provides largest Internal Diameter possible
Long pull lengths
Rapid installation
Cost effective
Solution to problem
Long term design life
Rural areas – environmentally friendly
Urban areas – reduced social costs

Pre-chlorinated
Pipe
Hydraulic unit pulls rod,
expander and pipe through existing line Ductile Slitter
New service lines bored with piercing tools
Pre-chlorinated Pipe burstingEngineering Value
– Follows path of existing utility Reduces potential for 3rd party utility damage Eliminates identifying new easements Engineering design hours reduced
– Ability to increase pipe diameter – Replacement vs. Rehabilitation
Life Cycle Cost Analysis HDPE has design life of 100 plus years
– Many states do not require permits Classified as line maintenance
Pre-chlorinated Pipe burstingConstruction Value
– Production rate of 300 – 600 feet per day– Crew visible to homeowners for one day– Surgical excavations along project with a reduction in
restoration up to 86% Compact equipment 90% reduction in carbon outputs Environmental sensitive areas not impacted
– Limits change orders– Social costs reduced as process enables better traffic
flow, less intersection closings and less business interruptions
Project Considerations - Upsizing
Size for size or one upsize replacement most common
Feasibility Study to determine risks– surface heave
Analysis:
- Host pipe material
- Existing depth
- Soil conditions
- Flow rates/C-factor
- Location
- Intersecting utilities
Connections:Electro-Fusion or Ductile Iron Fittings
Services: Fused or Mechanical
Squeeze-off Tool
Pre-chlorination
No service disruption required due to the pre-chlorination and testing of the pipe prior to installation
All AWWA C651-14 Guidelines followed
AWWA M28 accepted disinfection procedure
