During the past few years, research has continuedto show that sensible strength training producesmany health and fitness benefits. The excitingnews is that in addition to confirming the positivephysiological responses already discovered, key researchers have pinpointed other benefits.

Researchers have discovered that strengthtraining provides these benefits:

Low-back Pain Decreases. Several years of research on strength training and back pain

    Strength Training Update

conducted at the University of Florida haveshown that strong low-back muscles are less

prone to injury. A recent study by Risch (1993)found that low-back patients had significantly lessback pain after 10 weeks of specific (full-range)strength exercise for the lumbar spine muscles.

    Arthritic PainDecreases.

According to theTufts University Diet and NutritionLetter (September1994), sensible

strength training may ease the pain of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This isgood news, because most men and women whosuffer from arthritis need strength exercise todevelop stronger muscles, bones and connectivetissue. (If you have arthritis, strength trainingcould be a big help. Be sure to check with your

    doctor before beginning a program.)

Resting Blood Pressure Decreases. Harris andHolly (1987) showed that regular strength trainingalone significantly reduces resting blood pressure.

Westcott (1995) revealed that a combination of strength training and aerobic exercise improvesblood pressure readings even more. After twomonths of combined exercise, program participantsdropped their systolic blood pressure by fivemillimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and their diastolicblood pressure by 3 mm Hg.

Bone Mineral Density Increases . Menkes(1993) reported significant increases in thebone mineral density of the upper femur afterfour months of strength exercise.

EOTM for January 2009: Maggie Rascon

Glucose Metabolism Improves. Hurley (1994)reported a 23 percent increase in glucose uptake

after four months of strength training. Becausepoor glucose metabolism is associated with anincreased risk of adult onset diabetes, improvedglucose metabolism is an important benefit.

Gastrointestinal Transit Time Decreases. A study by Koffler (1992) showed a 56 percentdecrease in gastrointestinal transit time afterthree months of strength training. This finding issignificant because delayed gastrointestinal transittime is related to a higher risk of colon cancer.

Blood Lipid Levels Improve. Althoughstrength trainings effect on blood lipid levelsneeds further research, at least two studies(Stone et al. 1982; Hurley et al. 1988) haverevealed improved blood lipid profiles afterseveral weeks of strength exercise.

Back In My Day...s Month in HistoryEmployee Spotlight Where are you from? I wasborn the small town of Geneva,Nebraska where my dad was theSheriff for 20 years. So I livedin the County Courthouse. My bedroom was right by the

mens jail. Needless to say, I had an interestingchildhood. Later, when I was 13 years old, wemoved to Lincoln, Nebraska which is home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. And, yes, I am an

    avid Go Big Red fan.

I moved to Arizona a year and a half ago and Ilove it!

What do you do in your pastime? Well this isan area that I need to develop. I do love to goto the movies and Fashion Square Mall. I notonly shop, but people watch too. I love to fish,so I do need to get a fishing license and find a

good fishing hole. If you know of one, pleaselet me know.

One thing I would like residents to know about you? I am very dedicated to providinggood service to them.

Whats your favorite vacation? I love to go toCancun. I try to go every two years because Ilove the sun, beach and the beautiful water.

What is your favorite life lesson? As aNurse, one tends to do for everyone except forthemselves. So I have learned to recognize whenmy spirit is withering and do whatever it takesto renew myself. That includes getting a full-body massage, renting a lot of movies, eating

    Meet Kathy Eslinger

everything that I deprive myself of on most daysand going to long lunches with friends.

What is the best thing you have ever won? I sold vacuum cleaners to get myself throughnursing school and was the top sales personduring a promotional program. The prize was anall expense paid trip to Las Vegas. So I went witha few friends and we had a ball! The best part wasthat while attending a Las Vegas show I found

a loose diamond on the floor of the MGM. It was a carat in size. I really did hit the jackpot!

What is your favorite holiday? ValentinesDay. It brings the love out of people.

If you could be a famous person, dead oralive, who would it be? I always thought I

would like to sit down with Bette Midler. I loveher personality.

Most embarrassing moment? Which one? Isuppose I have a few because I am not afraid tobe myself and say what I am thinking.
