    Sveriges ArkitekterSwedish Association of ArchitectsThe Swedish Association of Architects is the unifying organisation of Swedensarchitects, interior architects, landscape architects and planning architects.Our members are private and public sector employees, self-employed professionalsor architecture students. They all share a common educational background and aprofessional involvement in matters of architecture and planning.

    The Swedish Association of Architects was founded in 2002 through the dissolutionof ve organisations for architects, landscape architects, interior architects andplanning architects that transferred their activities to the new organisation.The Swedish Association of Architects has more than 11,000 members (2010), inclu-ding 95 per cent of Swedens practising architects. The majority join during their veryrst year of architecture studies. Membership is open to all professionals, whatever

    their market standing (employee, self employed, student) or speciality.

    The Kasper Salin Prize, Swedens

    most prestigious award forarchitecture, is presented by theSwedish Association of Archi-tects. The prize is awarded to thebuilding. Client and architect areeach given a copy of the plaque.

    The Swedish Association ofArchitects runs a professional de-velopment course for its members,comprising courses in three stages:stage 1 the professional role, stage2 the processes, stage 3 leadership.So far (2010) 450 architects havebeen awarded diplomas for one orother of the three stages.

    Some 7,200 of the Associations members are professional practitioners and more

    than 2,000 are students. Four out of every ve professionally active architects areemployed in the private sector, primarily as employees or entrepreneurs in architectand consulting practices. The great majority of practices are very small. At the sametime there are a few rms with about 400 employees, which is large even byEuropean standards. Architects are also active in property development enterprisesand in construction and property management companies.

    One professionally active member in ve is a public servant. The majority of publicsector architects work in municipal urban development, city architect or planningofces. In the national government sector, architects are employed by nationalauthorities and utilities involved in construction, by county administrative boards and,as professors, teachers and researchers, at schools of architecture

    Architects with degrees from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the ChalmersUniversity of technology, the Lund University Faculty of Engineering (LTH) or theUme University School of Architecture (UMA) make up the biggest group of mem-bers. Landscape architects trained at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciencesin Ultuna or Alnarp are the second largest group, followed by interior architectstrained at Konstfack (the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholmor the Gteborg University School of Design and Crafts (HDK). The smallest member-ship group, but a rapidly expanding one, consists of planning architects with degreesin spatial planning from the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH). These establish-ments admit about 550 students per year (2010).

    Architect is not a protected title in Sweden. You can tell a qualied architect from themembership designations and professional titles used by members of the SwedishAssociation of Architects. Student members do not have a specic title, but personswho have completed the course of architectural education concerned have thefollowing membership titles:

    Architect MSA

    Landscape Architect MSAInterior Architect MSAPlanning Architect MSA

    MSA is short for Member of Sveriges Arkitekter/the Swedish Association ofArchitects.

    A fully qualied member with at least two years documented professional experiencein his or her eld can use the following professional titles:

    Architect SAR/MSA

    Landscape Architect LAR/MSA

    Interior Architect SIR/MSAPlanning Architect FPR/MSA

    These titles are registered trademarks and may only be used by members of theSwedish Association of Architects who meet the requirements of the Associationsstatutes concerning professional titles.

    Right: The title of ArchitectSAR/MSA is reserved for mem-bers of the Swedish Associationof Architects who also meet theother requirements.

    The Swedish Association of Architects is the professional and interest organisationof architects in Sweden. We safeguard the overarching interests of the architecturalprofessions in the market and we work to achieve good conditions for our membersprofessional activity and development. We assert the importance of qualied archi-tectural and planning work in all sectors of society and we actively address issuesconcerning conditions in the architects profession.

    The Swedish Association of Architects is a partite organisation and negotiatesagreements on behalf of architect employees, while at the same time, through ourArkitektService company, providing advisory and other services to architects whoare self-employed. We publish comprehensive pay statistics every year and carry outannual follow-up of architects fees.

    We provide advisory and supportive services to clients in matters of procurementthrough our competition and procurement service. We also work to develop Swe-

    dish architectural policy, we highlight quality aspects of building and planning and weaddress environmental and technical issues as well as sustainable urban development.

    We promote good architecture and planning through our prizes, which are presentedin conjunction with the annual Architecture Day. We award the Kasper Salin Prize tothe developer behind the best building of the past year. The Housing Prize is awarded(biennially) to the best new housing project and the Siena Prize to the best landscapearchitecture project. The Planning Prize is awarded (biennially) for the bestplanning project and the Golden Chair for the best interior or furniture design. Bestarchitectural reviewers are rewarded with the Prize for Architectural Criticism.Prize-winning projects are presented in an annual catalogue.

    The Swedish Association of Architects runs a CPD, Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment Programme, for its members, ranging from one-term trainingprogrammes for young architects to advanced leadership training for managers andprospective managers in architectural practice.

    The Associations membership journal, Arkitekten , is issued eleven times annuallyand covers current professional issues and developments in the profession and in

    architectural education. Arkitekten also covers market and procurement issues,debates planning issues and keeps a general watch on developments in the eld ofarchitecture and planning.

    The Swedish Association of Architects also owns Arkitektur Frlag AB, whichpublishes the journal Arkitektur (8 issues annually) and books on architecture.

    Each year the Swedish Association of Architects publishes a yearbook, Arkitektensrsbok, which is a mine of information and reference, as well as a directory ofmembers. We also publish a guide to Swedish architect practices and informationbrochures about competitions and parallel assignments. In addition, the Associationhas published a succession of books and other printed matter on architectural

    practice, copyright and procurement.

    The Swedish Association of Architects has a substantial website, www.arkitekt.se,containing both public information and information for members only.     The Swedish Association of Architects has fteen regional associations which orga-nise meetings, seminars, debates and eld trips.

    The Swedish Association of Architects ofce, with a staff of about 25, deals witharchitectural and professional issues, educational matters, editorial activities and

    publications, advisory and other services, legal assistance and negotiating assistancefor members, competition and procurement services, market observation, professionaland commercial development issues and professionalisation training.

    The supreme policy-making body of the Swedish Association of Architects is itsbiennial Assembly. The Assembly, which is directly elected by the members, appointsan Executive to direct the Associations activities for a two-year period. The executivehas thirteen members, headed by a chairperson.
